Chapter Nine

Word Count: 1677

~Mara

"Well well well, what do we have here?"

Kaden sits smugly in his seat, peering at me through the window. He looks as if he's just won the biggest prize in the lottery, by stealing someone else's ticket.

I take a moment to assess the situation.

I could run. I want to run. If I run down the road, I'll make it as far as a few metres before he catches up. If I run back across the grass I'll be faced with the Vengeance Pack wall, where he can easily corner me. If I get on the car, I'll die. If I run across the other side of the road, I'll make it to the woods, where I may have a chance of getting away.

But I need to make sure he doesn't expect it.

"What are you doing here?"

"I was about to ask you the same thing," he muses. His lips tug up in a smile that can only be described as evil. He is evil. And he knows it.

"Leaving," I state proudly. His expression suddenly morphs into one of shock, like he can't believe I'm actually sticking up to him. He probably expects me to run. This is what I want him to think. That I'm truly standing up to him, rather than plotting my escape.

He grins. "Without my permission?"

My eyes narrow at him. His permission.

"Does your husband know?"

"We aren't married yet," I mutter. He suddenly leans over the passenger seat, and pops the door open. It's like an invitation. Cool air from the air conditioning blows onto my legs, trying to entice me in with its icy fingers.

Does he seriously think he's going to hop into his car and ride off into the sunset with him? He's seriously lost it in his head, because that's the last thing I'm planning on doing.

"Great. That means you're mine for today. We have a lot to discuss..."

"Discuss? I'm not interested in another one of your games," I tell him. He sighs deeply, looking ahead of him. Cars still whizzed past, hardly noticing what is going on here at the side of the road.

"Games are fun," is all he says.

"Funnily enough I don't find your punishment fun."

"Get in the car, and I'll show you how fun my punishment can be," he says, a devilishly handsome smile on his face. I grit my teeth together in disgust.

Suddenly, an idea pops into my head. "I will, on one condition."

He narrows his eyes at me. Instantly I can tell he is curious. A condition is something he can manipulate; I can tell by the look on his eyes. But this is something he could never manipulate...

"If you give me a drink bottle."

He blanches. I hold back a smug smile. He had no idea what is swimming around in my mind right now.

"You want water?"

"Yes please."

He sighs. "You're wasting my gas."

"And I will continue to, until you give me what I want."

"I could walk out of this car and ruin your ass in front of everyone on this road right now," he says.

A low growl of anger surfaces in my throat.

"But, since I enjoy your surprising antics, I will give you what you want," he muses. He leans over to his cup holder, that contains a half empty bottle of water. He tosses it at me and I manage to catch it.

I screw the lid open, and take a swig. He watches me carefully, so I pretend as though it's what I've been wanting this whole time. Just a drink of water.

I slip into the car, but don't close the door after me. The leather of the seats cling to my warm skin, as I sit down. Kaden watches me with caution.

Taking him by surprise, I throw the water at him, watching it splash across his face. Without staying to see his reaction, I'm out the door.

In a flurry of legs, I'm sprinting across the road, dodging the minimal traffic, praying I come out of this alive.

"I'm going to kill you!" I hear him shout from behind me. Okay, I may not live through this.

Instantly my throat starts to burn, as well as my thighs. I'm unfit, but I'm running on adrenaline right now. I push through the grass, the edge of the woods in my sight. If I get there I can find a tree to climb, and wait it out till Kaden gives up.

I twist my head around, to see Kaden in hot pursuit. I'm not surprised he hasn't shifted; he doesn't want to cause a scene by the highway.

Making into to the woods, I feel some sort of relief. Despite my lack of knowledge and agility, I find myself weaving in and out of trees quickly. Luckily for me, it's much cooler around the trees, and everything is more covered. But this doesn't cease the pounding of my heart in my chest.

When I turn around to look over my shoulder, Kaden isn't behind me. Did I lose him?

I grin, twisting around a tree. I press my back against it, and close my eyes. All I can hear is the sound of my harsh pants, as I attempt to regain my composure. If I don't calm down, he's going to hear me.

I hold my breath for a moment so I can hear for footsteps. Nothing.

"Mara?" I hear his voice say. It's wafts up from somewhere on my left. It seems far away, yet still so close. I breath in relief. This means I can climb this tree and hide, as he hasn't found me.

"You know how I like games?"

I turn around, trying to block out my voice. He knows I'm in these woods somewhere, but hopefully he doesn't know where.

I turn, still staying as close as I can to the trunk of the tree. Glancing up, I see no available boughs for me to grab and hoist myself up on. I say a few words no Purity Pack member should be uttering under my breath.

"Hide and seek happens to be my favourite," he tells me. He sounds closer this time.

With light steps, I tread toward the next tree. The only sound is the grass under my feet. This tree is also large and tall with no branches. Another curse.

"I'm not going to put a bet on it, but I think I'm going to win this game." The sound of his voice is so taunting.

"Which means..."

He breaks off, and suddenly the world goes silent. It's as if the birds stop singing, and I can hear my own heart beat.

"You owe me."

Suddenly a pair of gloved hands grab my waist, making me scream.

"Let me go!" I yell, struggling in his arms. I can feel his breath hot against my neck. He must be smiling, that sick smile.

"I've let you have your fun," he mumbles in my ear. He twists me around, pressing me firmly against the tree. I feel as if the breath has been knocked out of me, as I am unable to move.

It wouldn't matter anyway, his vice like grip doesn't allow for any leg room.

His face is so close to mine, our breaths are mingling. Up close I can see every curve and line of his face. His skin looks so smooth, I want to touch it, want to feel it under my fingertips for the first time.

Seeing a monster up close makes it more obvious it's real.

He presses me more firmly against the tree, but it doesn't hurt. I'm distracted by the proximity of Kaden, and look he's giving me. For a second, I thought I could see a glimpse of a soul within his eyes.

He leans in even closer, so I can feel the energy between us. It seems to be drawing us closer, his lips tantalisingly close. I can even feel his hips pressed against mine, ensuring I'm restricted without a chance of escape. And for that moment, I don't mind.

If I moved an inch, I would be kissing the most infamous killer in Werewolf history.

His eyes are on my lips, and I wander if he feels the heat between us, as much as I do. It's warming my face, to my body, like a match striking alight on my spine.

Like myself, I can see an internal fight going on behind his eyes. It's like I can see Devils dancing on his shoulders, instructing him on what is wrong and what is right. I'm not allowed devils, which allows me to emerge from my mind, and push Kaden firmly in the chest.

Due to his moment of weakness, he stumbles backward, giving me the chance to run. Except my legs are weak from what just happened. Something that I don't understand.

The pull between us was like nothing I have ever experienced. We didn't have to touch for me to feel the most pleasure I have ever had. Sad.

It doesn't take more than a few long strides for Kaden to reach me, and pull me backward in anger.

"No one escapes me a second time," he says in my ear. Despite my struggle, Kaden remains impassive to my movement. I'm not getting out of this again.

"Kaden please-"

"Yes, keeping saying my name like that. I love it when they struggle," he taunts. I shake my head furiously.

All of a sudden, I feel his fingers against that spot on my neck, and I realise what he's doing. But it's too late for me to do anything before I black out.

💜••💜

And she was so close...Oh well.

I think I need sleep because Kaden's name autocorrected to pancreas, and for some reason, I couldn't stop laughing for five minutes straight...
