"Who in the world is Tayten?" I question, fingers brushing over the words on the page.
Cal gently takes the book from my hand, placing it on his lap to look at. The book looks old, but preserved. My mind spins at all the possibilities this could lead to, however, my mind is stuck on what the book actually is. There are no words in the entire book aside from this one passage.
As if he could read my mind, Cal spoke. "I think this is used to communicate."
"But with who? And why?" I ask, exasperated, as if Cal would magically have the answers to all my questions.
Cal exhales slowly, placing the book on the bed to stand up. As he begins to pace. Sweeping his hands back through his burnt wood coloured hair, I sit there, trying to process this. I shouldn't be surprised at all, considering how T has taken me by surprise at every second he has been here. If he wasn't on trial today, I would be terrified.
"We are going to find out this way," Cal mutter, folding the book back over to close it. "Whoever this is, they aren't coming until after the trial. He won't make it through, you know that, so we deal with T today, and this Tayten person tomorrow."
"What if T is Tayten?" I ask absentmindedly.
For a moment, I swear I noticed Cal's jaw clench, before he shakes his head. Does he know T? Yes, of course he does, but both him and the Silent don't want to share their history together. I've been meaning to pin Cal down and question him.
"Just tell me who T really he is," I prompt softly, looking up at the pacing Huntsman. He pauses, turning to me to fold his arms over his chest. That serious expression he always wears seems to be more concealing than ever right now.
"I don't know," he tells me. "I don't know him at all."
I frown. "Don't lie to me. I saw you two talking on the tape. You know him, and I don't, and as your Alpha, I would suggest you tell me if you would like to keep your job."
Cal sits down beside me again, facing me completely. I don't know how much eye contact with him right now, but as he places his hand on my knee, squeezing slightly, I have no choice but to give him my full attention. His gaze alone seems convincing, but I refuse to believe it for a second. I watched the tapes myself. I saw the recognition in his eyes when they met T's.
"That man in the cells, I've seen him before, yes, in my work. But in my work, I've seen plenty of Silent's. He double crossed me once upon a time, which is why I'm so glad he's here in your custody," he explains.
I narrow my eyes. Okay, slightly believable.
"He's nothing, he's no one. You shouldn't be afraid of him. That's how he gets his powers to manipulate you, to get you on his side," Cal continues, seeming desperate for my understanding at this point. His job is on the line.
"So you really don't know who he is," I say slowly, my eyes still narrowed.
"I swear, I don't," Cal continues, squeezing my leg even tighter. I watch his hand, before sighing softly. I believe Cal over T any day, considering the lies I know for a fact that T has told me. He is more manipulative than anyone I've ever met, and I know all the Alpha's in the Pack Quarter.
Everything will be over. By tonight, T will be sentenced, and I'll be okay.
***
I saw T from across the room, hands cuffed, threatening silver chains attached to the wall. They let him wear a suit at least, to appear more appealing and put together to the judge. His unruliness doesn't pass me by, though.
His eyes are on mine as I sit, having already spoken to everyone present in the courtroom. If looks could kill, I would be dead at this point. When I address him, I try my best to avoid his gaze, however, when I look at his mess of wavy hair on his head, I'm stuck realising that's one of the most charming part of him.
Right now, I could slap myself.
I stuck true to my explanation of the Silent, and why he shouldn't be alive at the end of this week. The jury seemed to believe me. Of course they would, I'm their Alpha, who was almost murdered by a Silent. To them, apparently.
Cal and a few other Guards have been able to speak. My mother, coming out of her sickness also spoke.
Now it's just up to T to speak to the jury. It will be his last chance to defend himself.
"Sir, you are now allowed five minutes to speak. You are facing a charge of attempted murder, which in this situation, will have the consequence of execution," the judge says, their voice rather monotone and bored. They want T out of here as much as I do.
As T stands, struggling against his binds, a door opening on the other side of the room catches my attention. A man walks through toward the crowd of Pack members who came only to view the trial. We meet eyes, and instantly, I know exactly who he is.
Fate.
All the air in my lungs expels from my body as just the sight of his inkish blue hair and obsidian black eyes. He is dressed smartly, as if he doesn't go around manipulating people's lives. He shouldn't be here. He should be dealing with other, more important problems up in the immortal lands.
I draw my eyes back to T as he stands.
"Can I just begin this by saying that this is all a misunderstanding. My name is T, and I was sent to complete a job I was unable to do. Instead of killing Alpha Faye, I spared her life. All I can ask is for you all to spare me, and I will leave, away from the influence of all the evil in my life," T says smoothly.
I'm taken by surprise at his honesty. This is the most he has talked all at once to anyone he's be around, aside from me. And by the looks on the juries faces, he's managed to get their attention.
"You see, and your Alpha Faye believes that there is more to me than she sees, and there is. However, it is not in the way she believes. You see, I'm trying to protect her from the evil in her life that looms right beside her," T continues.
Everyone in the room is silent, as T stares directly at me, before his eyes drift to Cal, who stands beside the booth I'm in.
"I'm not the bad guy," he continues softly. "I'm not the one with abilities, who is controlling everything. This has all incredibly wrong."
Fine hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
"I know you won't trust me," he says, eyes still trained on mine. "But the Alpha is in danger from her own Personal guard, so I would suggest trusting me on this one. I may be a Silent, but I don't want Faye dead."
At this point, I'm not even concentrating on the jury, or even on T and Fate.
Instead, I'm looking at Cal, who blankly stares straight ahead, a troubled look on his face. I want to question him about T's words right now, but I know I have no choice but to be quiet. Right now, T could be spinning words to make himself seem innocent, pinning the blame on someone else. But as I try make eye contact with Cal, he only avoids it.
"My execution is not the answer," T insists, turning back to the jury of people, who seem utterly fixated on what the Silent is talking about.
My eyes find Fate's. This is his fault.
Before I even know what I'm doing, I've pushed my way out of the booth, right past Cal to leave the room. The surprising part is that he didn't even following me, allowing me to step out into the corridor with my fingers dug into my hair. It doesn't take long for Fate to join me from outside the courtroom.
"Something stressing you out, Alpha?" Fate asks coyly, closing the door softly after him.
"What are you doing here?" I question.
I may not know Fate from meeting him myself, but I've seen the evidence of what he is capable of. There is a reason why my Pack believes solely in Millicent, and what she gives to us.
"I'm here to watch the trial, clearly," Fate says smoothly, quirking a dark eyebrow up.
"Who is he?" I growl. "Who is T?"
Fate ponders that for a moment. "He is who he says he is. He's also my brother. He may not be particularly fond of me, however, I'm curious to see if he will be put to death or not. I will not interfere if is charged, although, I can't say I would be particularly happy."
I blink a few times, my mind completely blown.
"Your brother," I say slowly. "How is that possible? Is he...like you?"
"I wouldn't say we are biologically brothers. Even though we despise each other, he is younger than me, and I do protect him. And before you hate him for being an immortal like me, I will simply say him and I have nothing in common," Fate tells me, as if the news isn't shocking in any sense.
I hardly know what to think. How can they be related, but not related? Something tells me T made a stupid deal with Fate and I'm seeing the end of it.
Suddenly the door to the courtroom bursts open, and Cal comes out. He doesn't look at me at all, as he simply strides past. Even as I call after him, he doesn't give me any of his attention. In disbelief, I focus my own in another Guard coming through the door.
"Alpha, the decision has been made."
"Already?" I spluttered in disbelief. "That's impossible."
Hardly caring about Fate at this point, I brush past him. The Guard catches my arm before I can get very far.
"Alpha, you must know before you go in," he declares breathlessly. "That they found him not guilty."
