"I thought that perhaps you would give me a few more moments to stretch my legs," T muses, glaring past the cell door I hold open.
If he seriously thinks I'm about to let a prisoner roam around, he's insane.
"You cell has plenty of room," I mutter, waving my hand to motion him in. Cal isn't here to assist me if T decides to retaliate, however, I would be happy to donate to his wound fund if he keeps being stubborn. I want answers, but I won't feel safe about discussing them until he is locked tightly in his cell with no room to escape.
Unless of course, he decides to use whatever voodoo magic that tricked me last time. The exact magic he isn't telling me about.
He walks toward the cell, much to my relief, before he pauses, hand holding one of the cell bars to stop me from closing the door. I growl a warning at him, but he only smiles, ignoring my impatience.
"I thought you would be more open minded, considering how willing I am to be open with you," he comments mischievously, to watch I only frown at.
"Fine," he mutters in defeat, once he realises there's no point answering.
He meanders into his cell as nonchalantly as possible, much to my disgust. I make sure to slam the door closed behind him as hard as I can, keeping eye contact with him as I turn the key in my lock. He follows my movements with his gaze as I tuck the key into my palm and place it behind my back.
"She was murdered," he says suddenly.
I flinch. "What?"
"Your sister, she was murdered," T tells me, strolling forward to slide his arms through the cell. I take a few steps back in response, until my back hits the wall. There's no way I'm moving from this spot.
"How?" I ask softly.
He shrugs loosely, and taps his nose again. Oh boy, I could kill him. Time for me to use my own manipulation tool.
"What's the book for?"
There's only a slight flicker of surprise before he masks it expertly. Then, he smirks, almost as if he's impressed. Either that, or he is trying to hide his terror that I found out about his plan to get this book on the night of my ceremony with the Moon Goddess. Maybe I finally have something against him.
"That's a great question," he muses. "I apologise if I seem flustered, I'm just surprised you had the balls to follow me out there and listen in. You seem to be learning, Alpha."
I grimace at his vulgar term. "Would you like to answer my question?"
"At this point, I thought you would have known not to ask me questions. When have I ever been honest with you?" he asks, tapping his fingers against the bars of the cell. Of course, I should have known. As usual, he likes to play me as a fool, which is fine, because at some point, I'm going to get him back for it all.
"I'm meeting with the judge tomorrow," I add breezily, watching T for a reaction that doesn't come. "The trial is next week. Scared?"
He shrugs again. "No."
The way he says that brings shivers down my spine. He seems so sure of this, as if he isn't about to have his fate decided. I'm sure the jury will want him executed for being a Silent, and I surely won't be trying to get him out of it. Not anymore.
"Where's your little Huntsman?" he decides to interject before I could continue. My eyebrows furrow.
"Is it impossible for you to keep him out of conversations?" I question, folding my arms across my chest. "I'm beginning to think you're starting to have a crush on him or something."
T's nose crinkles in disgust, which makes me smile.
"I'm just wondering why he's doing such a terrible job right now," T muses, strolling back in forth across the front of his cell. "He should be watching you, however, it seems as if he's gotten a little distracted by something. I thought since you're so fond, of him, you would want him by your side at all times."
"I prefer to deal with my own issues from time to time. He can do as he please, I didn't hire him," I snap, although, my mind does wander. What is Cal doing? T probably knows, if he is deciding to taunt me with it, but I know he would never tell me if I asked.
T only smiles knowingly. "Entertain me with a single thought from the Alpha's mind."
Shifting on my feet, I match the intensity of his gaze, debating on what I should say. Not the truth, since he doesn't like to be honest with me. I'm simply returning the favour.
"I'm thinking that I should let Cal spend the night with you in here," I tease.
"Need a break huh?"
My eyes narrow. He's doing this to distract me, I can tell, but it's almost as if I feel obliged to defend myself. I wonder why? Maybe it's because I like to think I notice the way Cal looks at me at times. Is this me admitting I'm attracted to him? I shouldn't be thinking like this, since he's my personal guard, and my experience with other males is low. I must be misinterpreting this thing with Cal.
Without my permission, my cheeks flush in a crimson blush, which doesn't go unnoticed by Cal. He approaches the cell door again with a practiced sensual stroll, smirking knowingly.
"Oh I see how it is," he breathes. "You two do have a thing. Like to share? I think I remember striking a deal with him that he wasn't allowed to touch you."
"He hasn't," I snap, wishing I could wipe the blush from my cheeks.
T raises his eyebrow.
"He works for me, that is all," I clarify tightly. "Why don't you tell me why you decided to make that deal in the first place. Last time I heard, you didn't care about what happens to me, and it wouldn't surprise me if you dreamt of killing me at nights."
"Oh Faye," he says smoothly, "quite the opposite."
He ignores my eyeroll.
"I can tell you quite well why I made that deal with Cal, and that is because I don't trust him, and neither should you," he tells me. "There's also another reason."
"Hmm?"
He taps his fingers against the cell bars, nodding his head for me to step closer. I remember the last time I did that, so I keep my back pressed against the wall, shaking my head at him slowly.
Noticing my stubbornness, he says lowly. "I did it, because I know how you work. You're not just curious of me, you're tempted, and it bothers you that I don't share my entire life with you like you prefer. If, however, you become interested in Cal, I lose every leverage I have over you."
His honestly has me completely stunned silent. Finally, a single beam of light has cracked through that obsidian wall of adamant. Now, I'm not sure how to reply.
"So, if you're being honest about Callan keeping away from you, I can rest easily tonight," he continues, stepping away to wander back to his bed roll.
I want to ruin his fun, however, that would mean lying, and I would never be cut slack if he found out about the lie. Then I would have to fire Cal on the grounds of embarrassment, which my mother would never understand.
"I'm meeting with the judge tomorrow, so perhaps I won't bother speaking to you until your trial," I say quickly, cutting him off. He hardly reacts.
"Have fun."
As I turn around to leave, I pause, watching T slide down the wall onto his horribly uncomfortable bedding. How does he sleep at night? No, I can't feel sorry for him or give him any pity.
"The trial isn't going to be you manipulating me, T. It's going to be you and a jury full of Independance Pack members looking back at a Silent," I mutter.
He doesn't reply, only watches as I walk away.
***
The judge sits in front of me, papers spread out across the desk. I watch them silently, knowing this person is going to be the one of decide T's fate. I couldn't simply whisper in his ear to have him executed no matter what, however, I stop myself.
The trial will be fair, I'll give him that. Even though he doesn't give me the same courtesy.
"Next week, huh?" the judge muses, adjusting the glasses on the bridge of their nose. "I'm sure the jury won't need long to decide."
I hope not.
She looks up, looking over the rim to the glasses at me. She has stony hard eyes that hopefully will intimdate the likes of T. Here I am hoping she can scare him out of a good defense.
At the same time as thinking that, I suddenly can't imagine the cells empty of him. It seems like he's ingrained himself in my life without me wanting that at all. No, he needs to go before his plan fully unfolds, and everyone in my Pack suffers, not just me. Maybe I'll add that to the prosecutor's notes.
"Yes, next week," I breathe.
"Don't worry Faye, he will be gone by the end of next week," she reassures me, going back to her notes.
I pause, not being able to stop myself from thinking, will he?
