Chapter Forty Four

For some weird reason Wattpad wouldn't let me find your profile, but thank you to who made this for me! (:

~Faye

I'm almost certain my heart has faltered.

I'm on my knees, covering my ears as if that simple action could abolish the last few moments. I keep my eyes closed so tight, spirals in various colours cloud my vision. Thea lays dead only a few metres in front of me. And it's all Time's fault. He so ruthlessly murdered her, not even thinking twice about the life that he was taking.

Peaking my eyes open for a moment, I scour the area. Jasper has disappeared, and sitting in the stroller is still Zayla. She remains blissfully unaware of what just happened to her mother.

"Don't look so solemn," Time murmurs, his tone nothing but condescending. Noticing my eyes are now open, he steps closer, leaning down. He's reaching for my shoulder, but I push back. "I'm free now. The job is done. Soon my power will be restored."

He looks so triumphant, so satisfied with his disgusting plan. I'm appalled at how heartless one can be.

"Then leave. Get out of here," I choke through tears. I can barely look at him.

"Oh I will," he delights. He stoops down, level with me. If I had any amount of controllable power over him, I would have lashed out and given him something to regret. "Have you checked the brand I left on your neck?"

My hand immediately comes up, covering it. I've been trying to ignore it, as foolish as it may sound. But not knowing what it is has shaken me into confusion. It's dark and thick, swirling in an unknown pattern across my neck and shoulder. I spent some time early this morning scrubbing at it, to no avail. It left only a red mark.

"I couldn't care less about it."

"Oh but you should, see, that brand lets everyone know who you belong to," he says, brushing a fallen piece of hair out of my face. I slap his wrist away, much to his amusement.

"What do you want with me? You're done here, you said it yourself," I growl.

I'm so weak from lack of sleep, and the death of a friend I just witness in front of me, that I want to curl up into a ball and cry. The fact that Time is standing here beating me while I'm done is beyond cruel. I shouldn't be suspecting anything different. However, as he looms over me, all I want to do is hurt him. Badly. He may be trapped in the body of my mate, but I should still cause him pain. Somehow...

"I know who you are, Temperance," he drawls, that smile causing me to shiver. I'm not surprised he knows, but it doesn't make me glad either. I barely know what it entails.

"Don't call me that," I snap, recoiling back. "You have no right."

Time leans forward, fingers coming close to my neck, I flinch back again. "You belong to me now. As long as that brand is upon your neck, I will know where you are, and what you're doing at all times."

My breath catches in my throat. Time forever being able to taunt and tease me for the rest of my waking life, and perhaps even sleeping, whenever he pleases sounds like my worst nightmare. I could get on my knees and pray to him to leave me be, to leave my life and never come back.

"What do I need to do to get it off," I ask quickly.

He seems to catch onto my desperation, a twinkle forming in those golden eyes. "See, that's the thing. No deal is sweeter than having that mark upon your neck. My sincerest apologies darling Faye, but you cannot convince me otherwise."

"Then leave," I growl. I can find a way to get it off some other time. It will anger him, but if he can't find me. "Stop taunting me."

"I cannot yet. My power needs to be restored," he explains, much to my dismay. I already know what that means. He wants revenge on Jasper. But how can I warn him when he completely vanished? Leaving behind his daughter in her stroller...

"Then go deal with it elsewhere," I dismiss. The only way I'll be able to warn Jasper is to get Time out of here. I doubt I could find Jasper before he does, but at least I could tried."What more could you possibly want from me?"

The main problem, is that Jasper just lost his mate. Who knows what he could be doing with himself.

"Jasper still holds my powers. I thought you would like to come with me in retrieving them," Time says merrily. He reaches for me, but I recoil, skidding back on my hands and backside. He smiles, enjoying the torment he is inflicting on me.

"Don't touch me," I growl. "I'm not going anywhere with you."

"Come on now. I'll think you'll have fun," he grins.

It's so sinister seeing such an evil immortal take over my mates body. T doesn't deserve this violation. Time used his body to murder an innocent. As sure as I am that he has done this before, when he was once an assassian, this is different. Thea had no reason to die. She was an innocent pawn in his game.

He reaches for me again, and this time, I lash out, smacking his hand. "I said don't touch me."

He jumps slightly, flinching back. It hurt him. He shakes his hand, examining it. I notice a slight burning rash beginning on the surface of his skin where I struck him. I smile quirks at the corners of my lips.

"That hurt," he notices, a grin replacing the initial surprise. It can't have hurt him too much considering how quickly he recovered. "Don't get too wound up, Temperance."

"Get away from me."

"I think you need to work on controlling your powers sweetheart. You're no hope against me. I don't care if you're one of the Seven Virtues...I'm Time. And you're powerless to me," he taunts. He snatches my arm, before I could retaliate, and all of a sudden, the ground seems to disappear from under us, and we fall.

My eyes immediately shut, as I grasp around me. He's transporting me somewhere, I can tell. As we land on hard ground again, I stumble, falling forward onto my hands. My fingers clutch around long, thigh grass.

I glance up, seeing Jasper standing there...close to the edge of the cliff.

"It's Jasper," I breathe. Instantly I'm on my feet, ignoring Time. I know what Jasper is planning. He wouldn't be hanging around the edge of a cliffface for nothing. Especially with the brittle wind gusting last us. "Hey Jasper, what are you doing?"

He stands there, staring off at the sky, rather than the ground that is shadowed by darkness. He looks distant, untouchable. His eyes have lost all vibrancy, and his skin has lost all healthy colour. His mate has been stolen from him, and he is sorting through his mind, trying to figure out how to handle it.

"Is this real?" He breathes, finally noticing my presence. He doesn't look at me, however.

"Listen, I know this is hard but...This isn't something to consider. Trust me it's not at all," I insist. If he steps off this cliff, I don't know what I'll do. Jasper has a life, a Pack to lead, children to raise. He can't leave this life. Not now. Even if all he has ever loved has been ripped from him.

"Do you have a mate?" He questions.

"I do."

"Could you imagine losing them?"

I understand where he is coming from. The thought of losing T is like a punch to the stomach. I've only known he was my mate for a short time, but it feels like forever. Now that a mate has entered my life, I couldn't imagine losing him. Jasper and Thea loved each other more than anyone I've known. And seeing them torn apart like this has broken my heart. I can hardly imagine what he is going through.

"I know it's not easy to deal with, but you have a son, and a daughter," I remind him. Trying to keep him on the subject of the other two figures in his life that he loves is my only options.

"They will be okay. Surely someone will care for them," he breathes.

My heart rate accelerates. Is he too late to turn back? He looks detached, like my words aren't sinking in with their seriousness. I want to shake him, but I'm too scared to touch him. Who knows what he could do right now.

"Do you hear yourself?" I snap. "Lets go back and talk about this."

"I have to save her. Death is a cruel immortal. Knowing Thea is my mate may make her do terrible things. I have to go there and help her," he tells me anxiously. I've only heard rumours about the potential of Death, the immortal. Each as terrifying as the last.

I grab his arm, clutching it. "You know nothing of he afterlife Jasper...None of us do."

"I agree with you Jasper," Time says, coming to stand in the middle of us. If I had any immeasurable strength in comparison to him, I would shove him right off. Not that it would make much of a difference to someone like Time. "Be her hero, and save her life."

I glare at him. "This is none of your business."

"It is, considering it's my fault, is it not," Time says. That smile on his face is sicken. He turns, Putting his attention on Jasper. "Go on Jasper. I'll give you a helping hand."

Without any warning, Time reaches up, and pushes Jasper by the shoulder. He skips forward, slipping right off the edge. My eyes slam closed.

"No!"

I feel Time grab for me. I push at him, wanting his touch off of me. He just killed Jasper...

"Uh, none of that dear," he tuts. "I promised your mate no harm would come to you."
