I stare at the photo for longer than necessary, trying to fathom what I'm looking at.
Who is that? She looks just like me. The more I thought about that, the deeper T's words delved into my mind. He knows exactly what this photo means, and who is in it. That's what frightens me the most.
Backing up, I slip the photo into my pocket, my intentions immediately swerving to T again. I have to see him, and to get him to answer my question.
Cal stops me at the door.
He's the last person I want to see right now, if I'm honest. All my question are not about to be answered by him, I'm sure of it. If he knows I'm about to see T about this photograph, I can see him finding a way to convince me out of this. I need answers, now, and with the words T spoke to me in confidence, I want to not only find out who the other girl is in this photo, and how he knew it existed.
"Alpha," he says, breathily heavily. He clearly rushed up here. "There's been a letter left for you at the front door."
It's not uncommon for member of my Pack to drop letters by. I spend most my nights reading them through for an hour or so. Naturally, I brush this off. "Can you leave it on the desk with the rest of them?"
Cal grabs my arm as I try to brush past me, stopping me from getting any further.
"You really need to see this. It was sent by four men, which as you're probably aware, is not normal. And the seal on the back is not familiar at all," Cal explains, producing the letter out from the inside of his jacket pocket. Frowning, I take it, turning it over to see this seal he is talking about.
He's right, this is from no Pack or place that I've heard of. The bright red seal has an oddly shaped letter on it that I can't decipher.
Cal watches as I tear the letter open, the photograph forgotten . As I pull out the thin paper inside, I decide to read it aloud for Cal to hear too.
"Alpha Faye, you may not know me, but I know you, and I think you will be able to help me. You see, you're an Alpha, and I'm one too...You're a female, and so am I," I read, pausing right after that to look at Cal.
He motions for me to continue, eyes trained on the floor. Despite my confusion, I do. "I don't expect you to believe me from this one letter, but if you decide you want to help me, then I'll be at your ball. You know, the one set for all the important people?"
I pause, raising my eyes. "Who does this person think they are?"
"Keep going," Cal prompts.
"I can explain everything there. Just know I need your help, and now. Those megalomaniacs like Kaden, Kael and Landon need to go, and you can agree. I know what Kael has been doing, and I can help you with that," I read. Sighing, I thrust the note into Cal's arms, not wanting to read another word of it.
Cal follows me, deciding to continue for me. "I hope you can accept my offer. You know the most about my Pack out of all the Alphas, and I haven't told you a word about it. Get it? With both our Packs we can-"
"Stop," I snap, grabbing the letter from his hands to scrunch it up. "There isn't another Pack, with another female Alpha. Someone would have found out by now. It's just someone messing with me."
Cal doesn't seem so sure, but I don't have time for him right now. I need to see T.
***
T is up and clearly waiting for me as I walk back down.
It pains to admit defeat to him like this. I had said all my last words to him in confidence, and now, I'm heading right back to hear his story out. The arrogant smile that dances across his face speaks everything I don't want to hear.
"You're invited to the damn party," I growl, standing directly in front of the cell door.
T's eyebrow quirks up. "Change your mind?"
He knows full well what I saw, and why I'm back down here again. Even with that information, I decide to explain myself by pulling the photo out from my pocket. I don't let him touch it, instead holding it up far enough away where he can't lean through and grab it. He might be able to use this against me, and I'm not about to find out how.
"Who is this?" I question.
T smiles widely now, winking at me. Slowly, he steps back, motioning for me to come closer. To come inside the cell with me. Folding my arms over my chest, I shake my head stubbornly at him.
"Come on in."
"Not happening," I reply.
"That girl," T says smoothly. "She had so much life in her."
He spoke as if he knew her. Of course he didn't. If she is my age, then T would have been young, too, if he is around my age like I assume. He's trying to get in my head, as usual, and this time, it's working.
"Had?" I question in disbelief.
He shrugs, leaning against the wall. He uses it as leverage to slide down to sit on his bed roll. Rolling my eyes, I shift on my feet, glancing again at the photo. Clearly I have no choice but to agree with his words and get inside that cell. Unhooking my keys from my belt, I unlock the door and wander inside, making sure to close it securely behind me. He's the ultimate wildcard, meaning I have no idea what's going on inside his head.
"So kind of you to join me," he exclaims warmly, watching me take a seat on the opposite wall. This cell is so small, our outstretched legs are almost entwined. I could even kick out and take away his ability to conceive children.
"Just talk," I snap, fingering the photo gently.
T is silent for a few moments, contemplating what he's going to tell me. I match the intensity of his gaze, ignoring that single curl that hangs down his forehead to his eyebrow. The urge to reach out and brush it away is so pertinent, I have to shove my hands under my thighs to stop myself.
"You don't want to discuss whether or not my tie for this ball will match your dress?"
My teeth grind together to the point of pain. It's the only way I'm able to stop myself from saying something stupid, or lashing out dramatically.
"Who said we are going together?" I seethe.
"I did," he smirk. "Considering I'm the one with all the information. And who else would you take, anyways?"
Sighing, I bring my knees up, hugging them. I'm still ready to get up if he makes a run for the door. The handle system is good enough to keep him busy for a few seconds, and he knows it. He would have to knock me out to have a chance.
"I have friends," I lie, before shaking my head. "That's not the point, tell me the secret."
T's eyes are on mine, and I swear they never left, despite his words. "White panties? Cute."
I bring my legs down almost instantly, the most intense blush staining my cheeks rose pink. "I should slap you right now."
"Do it," he teases, his eyes flashing. "I dare you."
Not moving, I just glare. It's a hurtful glare, I hope, that makes him feel at least a little bad for staring up my skirt. If I get up to slap him, he will do something, I'm sure of it. He wouldn't bring that up if he didn't have an ulterior motive.
"Cal did it for me," I reply snakily, remembering the hits T took from the Huntsman. I even now notice the slight bruising alright starting on his cheek. I can't help the smile that curls up at the sight of that.
"You're quick," he replies thoughtfully. "I don't think Cal gives you enough credit. Although, maybe that smart mouth gets you into more trouble than anyone, even me, could imagine."
I refuse to reply to that, my eyes even drifting down to avoiding seeing the meaning behind his. I need to change the subject...
"Just hurry up and tell me who is in that picture," I say, the fight to my voice dying down a little. Hopefully he won't keep teasing me, because I don't know how much more I could handle.
"That's your sister," he says slowly. "Or was your sister, at least."
My world didn't fall apart like I thought it would. A part of me knew, when I first saw the photo, that this was the case. Instead, I'm left with an empty feeling inside, that will most likely be filled with grief later tonight, when things actually set in.
"How do you know?"
T looks sympathetic, but still keeps his mouth shut. I sigh, feeling more than a little irritated at him right now. "Forget the party."
As I stand, T produces the keys from behind him, a slight smile taking place of that original sympathy. I growl lowly.
"How did you-"
"Let me come to this party with you, Faye, otherwise this will be the last of your worries."
I swallow, as he stands, still dangling the keys in front of me. As I go to snatch them from him, he grabs the sleeve of my shirt, yanking me closer. For a single, moment, I was pressed against his chest, having him look down at me brilliantly. Then I pushed away, taking the keys with me.
"I'm only inviting you because I feel sorry for you," I snap, unlocking the door to step out.
T doesn't even try escape, as I quickly lock the door behind me.
He gives me one last wink, as I walk away, with all the information stored in my mind.
