Kane's Willpower

Josette smiled and turned to look outside the window again.

"Now that we've established that, your boys could use some help."

Kane blinked rapidly and then exited the carriage, calling out to Ned and Cecil.

"Hey! Don't listen to them! Get your heads out of your asses and come back!"

He took a step forward, but Josette grabbed his arm.

"We've got this," she told him,"You pay attention to something other than those sirens. "

He watched as Josette and her witches attempted to handle the sirens. Ned and Cecil took a few steps back as Maribel pushed them along with her mind.

"Josette...Danvers..."

One of the sirens smiled at her and waved their finger, beckoning her over.

"I am not lured by your seductive ways," Josette smiled, looking back at some of her witches who might have been, "I would suggest not attempting to test my patience."

Kane watched from the carriage—but he didn't watch the sirens, he watched Josette.

Like the sirens, she had a hold on him, but he wanted it.

"Matilda...Hattie.."

The sirens scowled, "We want him.."

Josette looked back to Kane, "Well, he's not available."

Hattie sighed, "You can't tell me you're settling for a fucking mutt."

Josette stiffened. She wasn't settling for anyone—not yet.

"Don't try your mind fucks on me, Hattie," Josette snarled, "None of these men are available."

Ned and Cecil, still being held back by Maribel, began to shift to their hybrid forms, but Kane shifted to his to fight them back. Bigger and stronger than they were, Kane was able to easily push them back to the caravan as some of the witches were finally able to bind them.

"Kane, do not come over here!" Josette said, feeling him eye her and taking a few steps towards her, "I can handle them on my own."

But he didn't want her to handle them on her own. As a hybrid, he could take them on.

"No!" Josette said, tossing Kane back with her mind, "STOP THIS!"

"Wow.." Hattie giggled, "You've really got him by the balls."

Matilda nodded, "I'd like to have him by the balls—and then kill him, of course."

"Are you done?" Josette asked, her patience thinning, "We have to go. Maribel, get them back into their carriages and let's get out of here!"

Matilda locked eyes with Kane who wasn't moving.

"Well, shit..it's not your spell working him—it's you.."

Josette shivered. Knowing she had this power over Kane and it wasn't her witchy ways doing it made her heart skip beats.

"I am so fucking bored," Hattie said, "Come on! I hear there's some trolls down river. Good luck with your rabid dog..."

Josette watched as the sirens fell into fish form and began to swim away.

"That's disturbing.." Keira said as she watched them disappear underneath the rushing water.

"Let's get everyone back on the road," Josette said, watching as Maribel handled Cecil and Ned, Frances and Ruth took care of a few wolf stragglers who were still spellbound momentarily.

Keira and Josette made their way back to Kane who was waiting for his little dove.

"Kane,-"

She wanted to scold him for trying to interfere again, but Kane hushed her by pulling Josette into his arms and kissing her gently.

"Who the hell was the actual siren here?" Keira joked as she shook her head and walked back to her carriage.

"Thank you.." Kane said, pushing away from Josette slightly, "You were amazing out there."

"Kane.." Josette smiled, "Are you alright? No harm done?"

Kane shook his head, "No, I feel good."

"You look a little peaked," Josette said, "Those sirens can take a lot out of you. Have you ever encountered them before?"

Kane nodded to Ned who was shaken, but ready to roll on. He took the reigns again as Kane helped Josette into the carriage.

"Not those three, but I have.." Kane admitted, "They don't show up too often."

"Well, they do..they just don't show you specifically when they're around."

"Then what are you doing to me?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean..I felt your spell, but that's not what held me back."

"Kane, I'm no siren."

"Then what hold do you have over me? No woman has ever had a hold on me.."

Josette blushed, "I think you need to rest, Mr. Dempsey. Pretty soon you'll be telling me things you don't really mean. I am sure many women have had a hold on you—in more ways than one."

Kane leaned back in the seat, but he didn't close his eyes. He kept them on Josette who did take to slumber, her battle with the sirens having left her a bit fatigued.

A knock came at the little window facing the front of the carriage. Kane opened it as Ned nodded to the right.

"Rounding the bend that's a few miles from the Light Forest," he told him, "We'll be arriving at their village in a few hours. We should make camp around their perimeter if it's allowed. There's a bad storm coming from the east."

"That sounds like a plan, Ned," Kane thanked him, his body tensing with anxiety because he knew it was almost time to say goodbye.

Kane looked back at Josette who was now eyeing him with a sleepy smile.

"You're almost home, little dove.."
