Kane's Doubt

"What are you talking about?"

Cecil laughed, "Of course..you've never been in love, Chaos.."

Kane frowned. Surely he had been in love at least once in his life—hadn't he?

"You haven't as far as I know..." Cecil said, reading his friend's mind, "Maybe she's the one."

"Weren't you just trying to get with her?" Kane hissed.

Cecil nodded, "Of course I tried it—but you clearly fell into the trap."

"Trap?"

"I did want her—I am getting lonely, Kane, and she's the perfect mate, but not for me. She likes you—at least I think she does. The woman is headstrong and wouldn't have allowed you to be her lover if she didn't care for you in some capacity. You might be a charmer, but this one wasn't easily swayed. She wanted you from the beginning."

Kane looked passed him to see Josette and Maribel talking—probably about what happened. It seemed as though Maribel was groveling.

"You don't know she wants this.."

"But you do and when have you not gone after what you wanted?" Cecil asked, "Is this it for you? You're just going to let her go?"

Kane sighed and turned away.

He wasn't good enough for Josette—he'd been told that for so long by his aunt and uncle that eventually he began to believe it.

"Let's get a move on so you can get back to your little dove.." Cecil said as he rushed passed Kane to help in the gathering of the items and feeding of the horses, "Did you see that pack of unicorns this morning?"

Kane laughed, "Yeah, pissed off that the horses had more food than they did."

"I gave them some.." Cecil said.

"I know.." Kane told him, "I keep an eye on you, Cecil."

Cecil grinned as the two of them parted ways to head to their respective carriages.

Kane found his carriage empty—save for his and Josette's belongings. He stepped back out of the unit and looked around—eyeing her in the distance as she made her rounds to the members of her coven. She was such a good person and a great leader to them—how could he be the man she craved?

Watching her walk to him, his heart skipped beats as she smiled and allowed him to lift her into the carriage.

Once the doors were closed, Kane grabbed her and turned her face him—taking her lips into his the way he'd wanted to all day.

A little moan escaped her and it took everything in Kane's power not to toss their clothes off right in that carriage.

Josette giggled.

"You're in a needy mood."

"Was Maribel telling on me?"

"Of course," Josette said, "I don't know why she thinks she can get away with it. Everyone knows what happened. By the way, your hybrid is terrifying.

Kane chuckled, "I know..."

"Maribel is a menace, but her parents are also a part of the coven. She's been trained well and knows the ropes."

"Seems like she's trouble."

"She is, but she's a good warrior and that's one reason Devonia has kept her around. She really has just been a bitch, but nothing major."

"Why are you so forgiving? Her disrespect towards you should warrant punishment."

"I have no choice but to be, Kane," Josette told him, "Sometimes you have to pick your battles wisely—trust me, I don't forget."

Kane breathed in deeply and leaned back against the seat, taking her with him.

"Thank you for the last six days..."

Josette laughed, "Yeah, it's only taking us ten days instead of seven to get home."

"Has it been worth it?"

"Every minute."

Josette fell asleep not to long after that. The morning had been too exhausting for her and Kane didn't mind a little nap himself.

The rain pelted the carriage as they sought shelter for the horses until it passed and then they were on the road once again.

"Emma.." Josette whispered as she shuddered in Kane's hold.

He gazed down at her, the lips of her beautiful face turned up into a smile.

Dozing off, he too thought about his future—with her.

"Kane?"

"Yeah?"

Kane didn't open his eyes when Ned tried to wake him up.

"I'm going to ask that we switch up," his friend said, "I need a breather."

Kane nodded, "Sure thing."

He gently eased out of Josette's hold and smiled.

"She's beautiful, isn't she?" He asked Ned who was peeking in on them.

"That she is," Ned said, "Would you want her up here with you?"

"Yes.." Kane swiftly carried his little dove to the front of the carriage, settling her in on the cushioned seat and wrapping her in a blanket.

"I am sure you'll make some gorgeous pups with her," Ned said as he curled up in the seat behind them.

"You think?"

"Well, I mean..I overheard that their tea was tainted," Ned frowned, "Surely she knows?"

Kane's stomach dropped. She didn't say anything about the tea being tainted.

Did she know?

"Who did you hear it from?"

Ned shrugged, "Probably just a rumor—you know that Maribel most likely started it. She does indeed like to stir things up, I suppose."

Kane glanced over at a sleeping Josette who had been taking her tea on schedule every night.

"We'll cross that bridge when we get there, little dove."
