Josette's Words
"Who tainted this tea?!"
Keira demanded as they watched the rest of the tea be tossed into the extra wagons.
"That bitch.." Keira watched as Maribel—who was now speaking to Ned—lingered far away from the camp.
"We don't know that," Frances said as she came up behind her friend, "She's just misunderstood."
Keira rolled her eyes, "Frances, you're one of my best friends, but not everyone is good—especially that whore."
Josette shushed them as she walked by, determined to figure out if she was pregnant.
"How will you know?" Frances said as they made their way passed the camp and down to a ravine, "We're not Esther—we can only see what the gods allow."
"I am going to ask."
"And if you are?" Keira asked, her excitement growing.
"Then I will become a mother and Kane will become a father."
"No shit.."Keira shook her head, "I know how it works."
Frances giggled, "Are you OK with us being here?"
"I'm coming!" Ruth said as she practically tumbled down the hill, "There needs to be four of us."
Keira smiled, "Ruth—you've been hiding behind Cecil for like three days."
"I don't have anything for Cecil.."
"Sure.." Keira teased, "Keep telling yourself that."
"Call the oracles..."Josette said as she raised her hands and the others did the same
A cold wind picked up followed by a howl—then the sky darkened and the ravine became choppy.
They could hear the whispers around them—the oracles trying to come through. Josette had to know—she had to make sure she wasn't.
It wasn't time for her to be a mother.
The last wind whipped through and Josette sighed, dropping her arms to her sides.
A little bit of her was disappointed—she was not going to have Kane's baby.
Keira, Ruth, and Frances looked to their leader and waited.
"I need to be alone."
Keira ushered the others back to camp. Josette sat on the bank and looked to the skies. It was a beautiful day and they were almost home.
Home—back to their village in their forest.
Back to the same things day after day—a life she'd grown to know, to love—to embrace.
And now?
She'd met Chaos Dempsey who'd turned her life upside down in every good way imaginable.
She could feel him getting closer—feel Kane making his way to her side.
"Little dove?"
He waited for her to summon him over, "Hi.."
"Hey," he said, sitting down next to her on the grass, "Are you alright? I saw the others come back, but you didn't. I got worried."
"I'm fine.." she lied, "I'm always fine, Kane."
Kane sighed, "You know you can talk to me—always."
"We're friends, right?" Josette asked, not looking at him.
"Of course we are," Kane said, "We're a little more intimate than normal friends, but yes."
"I called the oracles to tell me if I was going to have a baby."
Kane's breath hitched—he swallowed hard.
"And?"
"And I am not."
Kane did not feel relief rush over him—he felt sadness and that didn't seem normal—not now, of course they weren't ready to be parents.
"I was—am a little sad about it, if you want me to be honest with you."
Kane glanced in her direction, "Really? I didn't think we were...that this was.."
"That we were going to be an item?" Josette smiled, "We're not, Kane, I just..I thought maybe if,-"
"If you were carrying my child then it would be a sign?"
"Something like that."
"Why does it have to be that way? Why can't you have faith in the now?"
"What do you mean?"
"What is it that you want?"
Josette sighed, "I don't know—I don't even know what I want. I thought I just wanted to lead my people and marry my kind...I never thought I'd be...with a wolf." She blushed as Kane grinned, "It's been an amazing week."
"Why do you have to wait for signs instead of looking into your heart for how you feel?"
Josette nodded, "Because I want it to be right—I want what I feel for you to be real and not just a fling, or a fleeting moment in time that I will regret..."
"Why would you regret it? Is it me? Am I the issue? I'm not a witch or a warlock..?"
"I wouldn't regret you, Kane," she gazed into his eyes, "I would regret letting you go."
"Why do you have to?"
"Kane, this isn't something we can take lightly..what do we have to offer each other?"
"Us—we have ourselves to offer each other," Kane said, "Josette,I-..."
"HEY!" Cecil called from top of the hill, "We've got a problem up here with some of the woodland creatures."
"Who is it?" Kane called back.
"Trolls.." Josette sensed, "That's the last thing we need. What were you going to tell me?" She asked as they rushed back to camp to see what the chaos was about.
"It can wait," Kane said, "Fuck! They're setting fire to our caravan!"
"Use what you've got so we can get these bastards tamed!" Josette said to her coven as they started chanting. She watched as Kane and his brood turned into their hybrid forms.
Looking back at Kane before she disappeared around one of the carriages, Josette smiled.
"I think I love you, too...Chaos Dempsey."
