You Dream?

I walked briskly next to a floating Nix, directed by Nev. Lyra and the others hung back, shooting me wary looks.

We got into MedLab and I lowered the board onto one of the cots. I grabbed a white handheld object with a green plus sign on the outside.

I turned the machine on, my hands directing me and the inner voice encouraging me to continue. I ran the machine along Nix's body, just inches above, careful not to touch him.

"Can you take a deep breath in for me?" I asked softly.

He winced as he took a deep breath in and held it for a second as I held the machine over his chest.

"You can exhale now." He couched and spluttered, holding his chest as tears ran down his face again.

An image flashed up onto the screen next to the bed showing me Nix's whole body, and next to that was a full image of his ribcage.

"There's a hairline fracture to the right side of your T4 rib. You're very lucky that no more damage was done." I told him, the others just stared at me, their eyes almost popping out of their skulls.

"Thanks Doc." Nix coughed.

"I'm not a doctor." I said looking away.

"Phee, can you please tell me where the healing pads are?"

"Access denied." She replied.

Access denied? That doesn't make sense, shouldn't we have access to all medical equipment?

"Phee, I need a healing pad." I snapped; my patience was running thin.

"You don't have security clearance." She replied in her annoying flat voice.

"Well, who has clearance then?" My blood was boiling.

"I do." Lyra said stepping forward.

"Can you please find the healing pad. It will help with the pain and help his rib heal quicker. Otherwise it will take six weeks to heal with minimal activity." I pleaded with her and she nodded.

She walked off and then came back holding a large white healing pad wrapped in plastic. She handed it to me and then moved away from me quickly, almost like I was contagious.

"I need help getting his suit off." I looked at the others who looked around at each other, no one offering to help.

"Come on guys!" I pleaded with them.

Nev stepped forward and I nodded at him, hoping he would see my appreciation. He helped me sit Nix up carefully as we undone his suit and slid it down to his torso.

Grabbing the scissors, I cut open his black under suit and applied the healing pad to his right side.

Nix instantly found relief as his face went from being contorted to relaxing a fair bit. I smiled at him, rubbing my hand over his short red hair.

"Feeling better?" I asked him.

"Much!" He smiled.

"You can leave now." Lyra snapped.

I looked up at her, tears begging to well in my eyes.

"You need at least a few hours rest, then I'll do another scan and see how it's healing." I told him as I moved away from his bed and walked out of MedLab.

Finding my room was easier these days and once inside I shut the door, grabbed my blanket and fell to the floor. Heavy sobs filled me as I cried into the soft blanket.

I don't understand how I knew all that, how I kept a cool head and didn't panic.

It was like I was born to do that, born to heal people. But where did all my knowledge come from?

The more I try and think of what I just did, the more I can't remember. It was like someone was helping me, someone inside me.

Loud banging on my door made me jump. I quickly wiped me face, trying to remove the tears and snot that flowed from me. I took a deep breath and hovered my hand over the sensor to open my door.

Lyra stood there, her arms crossed over her chest and her foot tapped impatiently on the floor. She was mad, I could see it in her eyes, and I looked down at my feet, waiting to be yelled at.

"What was that back there?" She demanded an answer.

"I don't know!" I whispered.

"I don't believe you!" She growled.

"I honestly don't know. It was like I had all this information at my fingertips and now it's all gone." I answered truthfully.

"Bullshit! We all went through the Awakening; we all know that you don't have special information floating around. You're lying! Tell me how you knew!" She shouted in my face.

I flinched back, scared of the rage inside of her.

I answered truthfully, why doesn't she believe me?

Tears sprung to my eyes again and I tried not to let them spill over.

"I'm telling the truth." I snapped.

"I think it's best if you stay away from everyone while we wait for your upgrade!" She moved her hands down to her side and clenched and unclenched her fists.

"Okay." I answered, unable to form anymore words or arguments.

She spun on her heals and marched down the hall. I watched her go as the tears spilled down my face and my breathing became out of control.

Closing my door, I once again wrapped myself up in the comfort of my blanket and let the tears fall until I passed out.

Noooovaaaa

A thick voice called me. I opened my eyes and I was outside the Sitara, floating away from the ship. I lunged into nothing trying to get back to the ship, but when I managed to turn myself around, the Sitara was on fire.

Noooovaaa

The voice called me again.

It pulsated through my body, burning my insides.

I screamed in pain.

"Leave me alone!" I managed to scream through the pain.

Not until you're all dead!

The voice filled my head, expanding behind my skull until I screamed again and clutched my head.

Nova!

Nova!

I shook all over.

"STOP IT!" I shouted.

"Nova!" My eyes flew open and Rosa stood over me in my room.

I was laying on the ground, the blankets were strangling me, and my body wet from sweat. I blinked a few time's trying to remember where I was.

I'm in my room, I'm safe! I chanted in my mind.

"Are you okay?" Rosa asked sweetly, her eyes raked over my face trying to see if there was something wrong.

"I had the weirdest dream." I slowly sat up, wiping the sweat off my face.

"Dream?" She asked puzzled.

"I think that's what it's called? I really don't know anything, all this information in my head comes and goes. My head is thumping." I groaned, rubbing my temples.

"We don't dream." She stood up and backed away from me, hitting the wall with her shoulder.

I could see in her face that she thought I was diseased or something.

"Wha... what do you mean? I've been dreaming the whole time since I was Awoken." I stuttered.

I started to feel scared, like maybe something was wrong with me.

"I need to um.... go." She said as she bolted from the room.

I stood up from the floor, wrapped myself up in my blanket and sat down on my bed. I brought my knees up to my chest and rested my cheek on the top of my knees.

I felt so alone, scared and stressed that my brain felt muddled again. First Lyra was mad at me and now Rosa fears me. I don't understand any of this!

No one came to my room for hours, I didn't eat or drink anything, I just sat there, curled in a ball and drifted in and out of sleep.

A knock at my door had me snapping out of the nap I was drifting into. I stared at the door, wondering if they had come to take me away, to put me in the airlock and float me in space.

The person thumped on my door again and I stood up, with my blanket, on unsteady legs. Once I made it to the door, I waved my hand over the button and wrapped the blanket further around me.

Nix stood outside my door, one of his arms gingerly wrapped around his chest, the other hand leaned against the door, trying to keep himself upright.

"What are you doing? You should be resting!" I gasped as he staggered inside and carefully sat down on my bed.

"I need to ask you something." He croaked, his breathing coming out in short bursts.

"If this is about how I knew what to..." I started to say but he cut me off.

"It's about what I saw when I was outside the Sitara."

"What did you see?"

"I saw a flash of something large, and I swear it was a ship. No one else believes me, and Nev said you watched through the window. Did you see anything?" He pleaded with me.

"I don't know. I thought I seen something, but apparently, I'm not all there. No one will believe me anyways." I sat next to him and he winced at my movement.

"So, you did see something?" He looked at me, his eyes pleading with me to agree with him.

"I thought I saw a flash of silver." I looked him directly in the eyes. He relaxed and a small smile lifted the sides of his mouth.

"So, I'm not going crazy?" He sighed and then winced.

"I don't know. I mean, I know things I'm not supposed to, I dream when I'm not supposed to. So maybe I saw something I wasn't supposed to." I clenched my hands together.

"You dream?" He asked me, stunned.

I looked up at him as his eyes raked over my body, but not in the way Nev does it, his eyes didn't hold that glint of desire, he was more interested, and I didn't see any fear in them either.

"Yes." I sighed and leaned back against the wall.

"That's why the others are freaking out. First you know things you're not supposed to, now you dream?" He laughed.

I was shocked, he was the first person to not run away or get mad at me. I sat there and stared at him, trying to figure out why he was being so kind. Was it because he too thought himself crazy?
