Weightless
As the days molded together, I started to understand the feelings that coursed through me.
I noticed when I was around Estrella and Nev, I felt anxious. My heart would race, and my stomach would form knots.
When I was with Rosa, Lyra and Nix I felt happy and excited.
Lyra said we were going to be best friends; I wasn't sure what that meant, and she told me it was an earth saying. Either way, I was happy that I was starting to feel a little better.
I was still very confused with all the words coming out of everyone's mouths, but they kept assuring me that all would make sense soon.
When I slept at night, I wouldn't see the beach anymore, instead images of the ship and everyone's faces filled my night with happy memories, but also confusion.
Occasionally, the red orb would filter into my sleep, causing me to feel uneasy. It pulsated and called out my name and sometimes scared me so much I would sit up straight in my bed, sweat dripping from my skin, my body racked with shivers.
I didn't tell anyone, unsure what they would say. Maybe they would think I was crazy and lock me back up in the Cryotube.
Phee helped me navigate the ship, her handy light orbs sent me on many long walks through the metal hallways. She showed me to what she called a Library, which was stacked high with books.
I found that I enjoyed sitting in the Library and it's where I spent a lot of the last few days, reading, smelling the paper pages. The smell was so foreign to the smells I had become accustomed to aboard the Sitara.
Most of the older books were locked away in glass cases, and I sometimes wished I could touch them, read them, smell them.
I sat on the floor reading a book on Earth. It showed me war and deforestation, third world countries plagued by starvation and dehydration. It made me feel sick that all these people were dying, or dead.
I felt sad for humanity, and maybe we were supposed to do better?
I put the sad book back and picked up a medical journal. My hands tingled and I started to feel excited, I didn't know why, but I liked the feeling.
Suddenly an alarm sounded, the library turning bright red. I covered my ears, hating the noise and the fear it brought.
"All crew to the flight deck immediately!" Lyra's voice echoed inside my head scaring me so much I yelped.
I stood up off the ground and shouted for Phee to help me. She must not have heard me because no glowing orbs of light came to rescue me.
I walked out of the library, my body shaking as I tried hard to remember where the Flight Deck was located.
Luckily, I saw Estrella running through the hall and I followed her at a distance.
I entered the flight deck where everyone was strapped into a chair. Lyra, Nix and Nev were in front of the screens, tapping away and shouting to each other.
"What's happening?" My soft voice tried to yell over the alarm.
Lyra must have heard me because she looked back and yelled "We have a small meteor shower heading for Centauri Earth and we are in its path."
"You need to strap into a chair!" Nix shouted.
I frantically ran for one of the chairs and grabbed the straps that would buckle me in.
But I froze.
Panic took over and my breathing came in sharp and fast, a strange tingling sensation started to spread through my body.
I looked up at everyone who were busy either saving the ship or closing their eyes. They had their buckles done up.
My eyes locked with Nev who was across from me, he unbuckled his belt and rushed towards me.
"I'm sorry! I don't... I don't..."
His soft, dirty hand cupped my cheek and he forced me to look at him. I saw something I never saw before, kindness and warmth in his dark eyes.
"Hey, it' okay! I'll help you." He said softly and I nodded.
His hands worked quickly as he bucked me in and tightened the straps, his hands touched parts of my body which sent my heart racing. It's not that it felt wrong, it was just a different feeling.
"All done. Just take deep, long breaths, everything will be okay!" He smiled warmly and then moved back to his seat, clicking buckles in and tightening the straps.
"Impact in two minutes." Phee announced.
I looked around anxiously as my fingers curled around the straps and held them tightly.
"Impact in one minute."
I squeezed my eyes closed; my heart boomed in my ears. I tried to follow Nev's instructions and breath in slow and deep, but I couldn't control anything.
"Impact in ten seconds." Phee told us.
"Everyone brace yourselves! Things are about to get bumpy." Lyra yelled.
A loud bang and screeching noise filled the flight deck, and I violently thrash in my seat from the impact. I didn't dare open my eyes, I was too scared to see the blackness of space.
Alarms blared everywhere, each one a different tone, and I heard someone say a word over and over which I didn't understand, shit.
I didn't want to die. Another loud crash made me scream as my head went flying forward. I was shaking form head to toe as I clutched even tighter to my straps.
Then silence filled the flight deck.
I was still too scared to open my eyes; I didn't want to see what the aftermath of the meteor shower.
I wondered what happened down on Centauri Earth. Did they see anything? Did the large rocks fly down from space and batter the earth?
"Everyone okay?" Lyra called out, her voice loud in the deafening silence.
I opened my eyes and looked around. Estrella's long platinum hair floated in the air and I suddenly felt strange. My legs were involuntarily lifting into the air and I felt my hair lifting.
"Eighty-seven percent damage to the Gravity Conductor in sector C." Phee announced.
I looked around the Flight Deck, no damage could be seen around us, apart from some smoke that was coming from one of the panels.
Nix unbuckled himself and floated upwards, he grabbed into his chair and pushed himself forward.
"I'm going to fix the conductor." He told Lyra who nodded.
I watched as Nix wove his hand in front of a wall and the section slid open, revealing space suits lined up inside.
He quickly and awkwardly pulled a suit out and started to try and put it on while he floated in the air.
His helmet floated past me showing my shocked, pale face in its reflection.
"Lyra, can you help me with the helmet." Nix grunted as she unbuckled herself and propelled towards the helmet which had hit the wall next to me.
She propelled herself to Nix and helped him put the helmet on and clip it into place. Nix pressed a button on his arm, and he stuck to the ground with a loud click.
Lyra floated around him, making sure he was all secure inside his suit.
I panic as I looked between Nix and the others. Everyone's face was neutral and unworried. I was hyperventilating.
"Where is he going?" My voice came out high pitched.
"Outside." Lyra floated past me and strapped herself back into her chair.
"Outside? Into space?" I yelped; I couldn't imagine being brave enough to go out into the darkness.
"He will be fine." Lyra smiled reassuringly.
Nix started to walk out of the room, his boots clunking on the ground down the hallway, and then the room filled with silence again. The only noise being my heavy breathing.
Nix unbuckled himself and floated towards me. I was stunned as I watched him, a mischievous grin filled his features.
"Nev..." Lyra warned.
"It will be fine, Captain." He floated towards me, his hands reaching for my buckles.
"What are you doing?" I screeched and smacked his hands away.
I didn't trust him, nor did I want him touching me.
"I'm unbuckling you." His grin spread wider at the panic on my face which made me dislike him more.
With one last click, my buckle rose away from me and I started to float out of my seat. I squealed with fright and grabbed into Nev who laughed at me as he wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.
"It's okay." He cooed into my ear and I caught Estrella rolling her eyes as she pretended to vomit.
My heart was beating out of my chest as we rose further into the air.
"You can let go." He said to me and I frantically shook my head.
It felt bizarre without my feet on solid ground, my hair floated around me and I didn't want to let go of Nev to try and control it.
"Let go, Nova." He whispered into my ear sending shivers down my spine.
Everyone was looking at me, so I decided I needed to be brave. I slowly and carefully let go of Nev. I started to float backwards, causing me to panic again, but Nev came close to me, and suddenly his presence was soothing.
I felt weightless as I levitated over everyone. A smile spread across my face as I realized that this was... fun.
Nev watched me closely, and a handsome smile spread across his face. I never noticed when he smiled his eyes sparkled, or the stubble that was growing across his jaw.
My stomach started to squirm, but not in a bad way. It was strange, but somehow nice.
"Fun, isn't it?" Nev laughed.
"it feels unreal, floating like this." I said in wonder.
"Wait until you get to spacewalk." He winked at me and my smile faltered.
