Phoenix... Look Out!

"Guys! I'm at the airlock." Nix's voice rang through the Flight Deck.

The sudden change in silence made my heart leap into my mouth, but I relaxed as I realized I wasn't in danger.

"Keep communications open at all times." Lyra spun around in her chair and started to drag things across the screen in front of her.

"Airlock initiated." Phee's voice echoed from Nix's end.

A loud hiss filled the room and then silence. I started to bite my nails, it felt soothing and natural.

"Please wait for decompression." Said Phee.

"How's it going?" Lyra asked.

"Good. I'm just hooking up the support cable to the hook." He responded.

"Nervous?" Lyra asked, her voice seemed a little strained.

"Nope." Nix's confidence made me feel a little better, but I still chewed my nails.

I felt weird now, floating in the air, chewing my nails. Everyone was so calm, and I felt like an utter wreck.

"Did you want to see him outside?" Nev whispered, his face was so close to my ear that when I freaked out, my hand nearly smashed him in the face, but he dodged it and smiled.

"How?" I asked, excitement and worry coursing through me.

"There's a viewing deck. Come on." He grabbed my hand and then pushed us forward, towards the door.

"Nev, that's out of the question." Lyra shouted after us.

Nev ignored her and pushed us further into the hall, using pipes and handrails to propel us through the halls.

"Nev! Get your ass back here!" Lyra screamed through the coms and I winced.

We arrived at the viewing deck; the same one I had seen our new planet from. But what I didn't notice was that if you looked to the side you can see the whole side of the ship.

I held on to a pipe on the side of the wall and watched as Nix climbed up the side of the Sitara. A long cord kept him attached to the ship.

From this angle I could see the ships engines, sticking out the side, the cylinder-shaped objects illuminated scarlet by the distant red orb.

Slowly and carefully, Nix climbed up the side of the ship, attaching and dethatching the cable as he climbed.

I don't know how I would feel being out there with no oxygen around me except the little bottle on the back of the suit. My nerves were through the roof as I watched him out there.

Nix suddenly stopped and secured himself to the ship and started to pull out the broken part. In the corner of my eye something zoomed by.

I whipped my head towards the movement and saw a few stray rocks flying right for Nix.

I banged my fist on the glass, screaming out for Nix to move, but he couldn't hear me. By the time Nev figured out what I was yelling about the rock smacked into Nix and knocked him off the ship.

I inhaled sharply as I watched him float into the empty blackness of space.

"Nix! Can you hear me? Are you okay?" Nev had his finger to the back of his ear as he called out for our crew member.

I watched as the cord holding him to the ship pulled tight and his body lurched suddenly with force.

"Gu.... Hit me... Oxygen." His distorted voice came through our coms and I wanted to throw up.

"I'm coming to get you buddy!" Nev shouted through his coms.

He pushed off the glass and headed back to the flight deck. When he came back, his feet were firmly on the ground as he rushed through the hall.

"Oxygen levels critical." Phee announced.

I watched as Nev, completely suited up, came out of a hole in the side of the ship. He made his way up to where Nix's cable was attached and pulled him back in.

Nev suddenly stopped and watched something.

A sliver of silver flashed near them and then disappeared.

"Did anyone see that?" Nev's voice came into my ear.

"Get back inside!" Lyra commanded and Nev resumed rescuing Nix.

"I need to finish fixing the Gravity Conductor."

"Hurry up!" Lyra shouted.

Nev secured Nix to the ship and then started to finish the job.

My stomach dropped and I smacked hard into the ground as the gravity came back on.

"Ow!" I yelped, sprawled out on the ground. That hurt!

"I have him. We are on the way back. Have a med pack ready, he says he is in a lot of pain." Nev's voice was strained and I picked myself up off the floor and ran as quick as I could towards the airlock.

I ran straight for MedLab. I remembered where it was somehow, like my body was drawn to it.

I opened the door, grabbed a med pack off a bench and an oxygen mask and bolted back the way I came. My legs were aching from being smashed on the ground when I fell, but I put that aside and made it to the airlock.

I stood there bouncing on the balls of my feet, it felt like an eternity before Nev had Nix back in the airlock, but there he was, back in there, holding Nix up as Phee went through decontamination and pressurization procedures.

Finally, the airlock opened with a hiss, and Nix screamed in pain.

Nev had laid him on the floor, unclipping his helmet and carefully removing it. Nix's nose was bleeding and he held onto his chest gingerly.

I instantly put the oxygen mask on his face, motioning for Nev to help me.

"Hold this." I told him but he stood there looking at me dumbfounded.

"Are you just going to stand there, or are you going to help me?" I snapped.

Nev took his helmet off and fell to his knees, grabbing the oxygen mask and holding it over Nix's face. I started to clean the blood of his nose, feeling around to see if it was broken.

"What are you doing?" Nev asked me, his eyes wide and confused.

"I don't know, but I know that what I'm doing is right."

I don't know how I knew what to do, but I knew what I was doing was correct.

An inner voice directed me, telling me where to touch, where to put pressure, what tools to use.

I started to move my way down his neck and onto his rib cage, slightly pressing to see where he was injured.

When I got to his right side and put slight pressure, Nix opened his eyes and screamed, tears sprang to his eyes and leaked down the side of his face.

Lyra and the others arrived, she held another med pack in her hands and dropped it when she saw me hovering over Nix's body.

"What in space are you doing?" She growled.

"We need to get him to MedLab and do a scan on his ribs. I think there is either a fracture or a break." I ignored her question and filled my tone with confidence.

"You need to let me take over." Lyra said pushing Nova out of the way!

"No, you need to listen to me. If he has a broken rib and it pierces his one of his lungs he will die." I shouted.

"How do you know that?" Lyra looked at her with the same expression as Nev moments ago.

"I don't know, but I know it's true." I said looking deep into her eyes.

"You can't know that!" She snapped.

"I also know that if a rib is broken; it can also damage other organs like his kidneys. Don't argue with me please. We need to get him to MedLab, now!" I stood up tall and strong.

"We should listen to her." Nev whispered to Lyra who looked at him stunned.

She didn't answer, so Nev grabbed something off the wall which extended into a long board with buttons on the end. He slid it next to Nix and looked at me, waiting for me to tell him what to do next.

"We need to lift him carefully onto the board." They all looked wary but nodded.

Everyone moved around Nix and placed hands underneath him ready to lift him.

"On the count of three, lift and I will slide the board underneath him." I told everyone.

"One... Two...Three!" Everyone lifted Nix up and I slid the board underneath him.

When everyone was out of the way I clicked a button on the board, and it hovered into the air.
