1.1 - The Mystery Champion

Welcome to the Mortal Kombat story. Up top is the spider suit for MK9, apparently it's a concept suit from Infinity War. I personally like the simplicity of it and that it's not too flashy.

Have you guys got any predictions for this story? I always enjoy hearing your thoughts.

Anyways, onto the chapter.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The battle at the Statue of Liberty was long, hard fought and painful but it had been won against both new and old for some. However, where New York's most famous landmark stood which had tourists from all corners of the Earth coming to visit, now looked like a barren and desolate wasteland.

This universe's Spider-Man knew all too well that sacrifices had to be made for victory to be secured. The rebuild from the aftermath was the next step, this was New York though. The city had come back many times before and it would so again.

The city would be rebuilt with the memory of what had happened but it would lose the memory of the teenager behind the Spider Man mask, Peter Parker. This was his sacrifice, everyone forgets him so he and Doctor Strange could get the friends and foes he'd tried to save back to their universes.

Peter 1, as he'd branded himself, jumped down from the flame of Lady Liberty's torch to the arena of his and Green Goblin's battle. Peter saw that two of his fellow Spider-Men were holding up another Spider-Man, who'd been stabbed in the back by Green Goblin after saving him from Peter 1's wrath.

"Hey, hey. I think this is it. I think you guys are about to go home." Peter 1 stutteringly revealed to his fellow web slingers, he was still a little shaken up about what had happened before and what was going to happen in the next few minutes.

"Great." Peter 2 winced as he'd aggrevated his wound when he moved.

"I just-- I wanted to tell you-- I just wanted to say that--" Peter had such a lot to say and such little time to say it, that always seems to be the case "I really don't know how to say this."

"Peter." Peter 3 soothingly said to stop Peter 1's gibberish which succeeded.

"You know. It's what we do." Peter 2 said.

"And will always do." Y/N L/N added with a smile. Despite the pain, Spider-Man was who they all were and they were honoured to be that person for their respective homes.

"Yeah, it is." Peter 1 agreed, he was the most inexperienced of the four and had learned a lot from the trio in a few short hours "Right, I got to find Ned and MJ." He wasn't quite sure what to do and did what his instincts told him to and that was hug his fellow Spider-Men.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you." Peter 1 repeated to really hammer home his point. If these guys weren't here, he wouldn't have had a hope in hell.

Given the time sensitivity of the situation, Peter 1 couldn't hug his fellow Spidermen for long as he still had to find and say his goodbyes to his best friend and girlfriend. Peter 1 swung away leaving the trio with each other.

The three elder Spider-Men were proud of Peter 1, perhaps a lesser man would have given in to wrath and revenge but whether the cops and media liked it or not, Spider-Man was a symbol of hope for people and that's sometimes what people need - a little bit of faith.

"You're in so much pain right huh?" Peter 3 asked Peter 2.

"I am." He meekly responded.

"Better stabbed than dead." Y/N offered as a silver lining. "Gobbie had terrible aim." Y/N commented.

"Like the stormtroopers." Peter 3 said.

"Exactly! I'm always thankful that the bad guys have such terrible aim." Y/N said, looking up at the sky.

"I know! I'd have been screwed so many times if they had good aim." Peter 3 agreed.

Peter 2 chuckled at his fellow Spider-Men's words, it was taking his mind off of his stab wound from Norman's glider. There was a loud whoosh in the air and the men looked up at the peak of Lady Liberty's torch to see Doctor Strange doing some calculated arm gestures with speed and precision.

"I guess this is it." Peter 3 said what they were all thinking.

"Can you stand on your own?" Y/N asked Peter 2 who nodded. Y/N and Peter 3 slowly and carefully loosened their grip on Peter 2 who could still hold himself up but was admittedly a little hunched.

"Bye Peter 2." Peter 3 waved "Bye Y/N. It's been a pleasure knowing you guys."

"And it has been an honour to fight at both your sides." Peter 2 chuckled before turning to his other fellow Spider-Man "Goodbye both."

"Bye Peter Parkers." Y/N said his goodbyes with a two finger salute, a hint of sadness in his voice as the words came out of his mouth.

"Still so weird that you're not a Peter Parker." Peter 3 smiled whilst shaking his head.

"Not Peter Parker." Y/N then held his hand over the spider symbol on his suit "But always Spider-Man." He said triumphantly "Maybe we'll see each other again." Y/N opted to be optimistic about a Spider-Man reunion in the future.

"Hopefully." Peter 2 answered.

"Maybe with less of our rogues gallery." Y/N and Peter 3 said simultaneously, the two pointing at each other.

"Jinx!" They both said, Peter 2 shaking his head with a small smile at their actions.

Despite their hopes to see each other again, all internally knew that he was highly unlikely but chose to remain optimistic nonetheless "Here we go." Peter 3 said, waving one last time as both he and Peter 2 were absorbed by a bright golden light and transported back to their universe.

The same golden light shrouded Y/N's body and he was happy that he would be going home after this bizarre adventure, but sad that he'd only shared just a few short hours that he never knew he needed with his Spider-Man counterparts. After what felt like a few seconds, Doctor Strange's spell seemed to work as he found himself materialising in a different environment.

However, with sending both heroes and villains back to many different universes, Stephen didn't seem to put too much thought into making sure he ended up in his apartment or something. Y/N felt the wind blowing against his face and he was seasoned enough at this to know that he was falling out of the sky.

"WOOOOO HOOOOO!!" He excitedly yelled as he adjusted his body mid flight to get him down to the floor quicker as he waited for something to attach his webs to in order for him to swing.

'I hope Peter 2 isn't falling out of the sky right now.' Y/N thought to himself in all the excitement. Although maybe Peter was provided the same advantage as him. Despite the gruelling battle at the Statue of Liberty, Y/N felt more refreshed now that he was back home in his own universe.

The Spider continued to descend but at a greater velocity than he was expecting, it was not aided in the slightest when he entered a bright white, misty void that was as thick as smog. L/N could barely see his own hands in front of him let alone anything else.

L/N was now relying more on his senses than anything else and thank goodness he had an outstanding 'Spidey Sense' which he'd heard Peter 1 and his friends refer to as his 'Peter Tingle' which sounded very suspect to his ears. Y/N's spidey sense had saved his life more times than he could count.

As he continued to descend, he was experiencing the conditions becoming far less favourable and far more harsh as the wind began blowing at what felt like gale force which was completely throwing Y/N off his bearings, with Spider-Man struggling to stay in control.

"Just some....... Light........ Turbulence." He said to himself like a pilot would to their plane full of passengers except he was in a lot more danger than them.

He was finally seeing shaped that weren't white clouds however they were materialising at a rate that he couldn't foresee. He felt his spider sense kick into action, indicating imminent danger, his eyes widened behind his mask when he finally saw light "Oh my god." He muttered.

A large mountain with a very pointy peak was incoming, something that he'd impale on within the next few seconds. The mountain was the centrepiece for any nearby boats to see, it was a part of a large island that was surrounded by dangerous rocky banks.

Thankfully for Y/N, he had some amazing reflexes and ability to think and get himself out of dangerous, time sensitive situations. He flicked his wrist and a web came out of his (invented) web shooters. The web attached to the side of the mountain and the webslinger adjusted his body so that he could do a 360° swing around the peak of the mountain.

Within this small time window, Y/N had noticed a fire lit area at the centre of the island. Once the momentum was in his favour he let go of his web and aimed himself in the direction of the building. He flew through the air with a more conviction than before, on his descent, he tucked his legs into his body and as soon as his body made contact with the concrete floor, he rolled through with absolute precision that it would make any Olympic gymnast weep.

He stood up triumphantly, another death defying situation that he'd gotten out of with his life intact "And that's how you fall with style." Y/N cheered to himself, which was the last thing he said before he collapsed to the floor. The mix of multiversal travel and intense way of landing/crashing back to Earth being a little too overwhelming all at once, even for him.

The unexpected entrance from the sky had alerted his presence to the only two other individuals that were in the courtyard at the time. The pair had ceased their previous squabble to look over the fallen being.

"Another one of your tricks sorcerer?" The Caucasian man in blue and white robes asked.

"I should ask you the same thing thunder god." The old Asian man with long silver hair, dressed in dark red robes.

--

Y/N was starting to come around, he had no clue how long he'd been out for but he still felt a little groggy and his memory was a little fuzzy. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of two other people in the room arguing "Ughhh." He groaned in discomfort "Where am I?"

Y/N's sounds alerted the attention of the two people in the room, who once again put their argument on pause for the time being.

"You are awake."

"Yeah, just about." He rubbed his eyes, noticing that his mask was not on his head. He looked at the two people in front of him, their fancy clothes sobering him up fairly quickly "Cool costumes." Y/N then gasped in realisation "Is it the New York medieval convention already? Are you guys LARPers?"

"LARPers?" The Caucasian man with bright white eyes, in blue and white robes with funky looking hat questioned.

"Yeah, you know Live Action Role Play. Sorry, are you not supposed to break character?" Y/N innocently questioned, living in New York all of his life, there was perhaps no other place where you could find as many colourful characters like it.

"Cease your incessant chatter, you blabbering fool." The old man of Asian descent in red and gold robes demanded, really emphasising his syllables.

His tone and choice of words made L/N raise his eyebrows "Okaaaaay, I see you're going full Daniel Day Lewis." Y/N said as a bit of a backhanded compliment to the old man "Perhaps you can tell me what's going on and where I am?" He directed his question to the other man.

"I am Raiden, Earthrealm's protector and the god of thunder." He introduced himself to Y/N "And this..." Raiden began, sounding disgusted "Is Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung. This is his island."

Y/N narrowed his eyes at the pair, either they were both very dedicated actors or they were being genuine, only one way to find out for sure "Okay, prove it. I've seen illusions before with Mysterio, all smoke and mirrors." Y/N confirmed, these rookies would have to wake up pretty early to fool Y/N.

"There are no parlour tricks here boy." Shang Tsung confirmed, possibly the only time he'd ever find himself agreeing with Earthrealm's protector.

The sorcerer emphasised this when he gestured his hands towards Raiden, masking him in a green light before bringing the light back towards himself and in the process shapeshifting into the Thunder god.

Y/N was surprised to witness the shapeshifting, this was way different than when Sandman used to do it to make hammers etcetera, Shang Tsung took the term identity thief quite literally. That was finally the proof that he needed that he was clearly Far From Home.

Not appreciating having his identity stolen, Raiden's eyes flashed blue and electricity began to form around his fist. He grabbed Shang Tsung's wrist and shocked him, causing the sorcerer to shapeshift back to himself.

To any normal person, this might have come as quite the shock but he'd spent years fighting costumed criminals and had just recently discovered that the multiverse theory was a fact. It was proving to be a very irregular day, even by Y/N's standards.

"And who might you be stranger?" The thunder god questioned.

Y/N had seen that his mask had been placed on a table next to where he'd been laying, if these two were telling the truth about who they were then it wouldn't take a genius to find out his name.

L/N stretched his arms behind his back causing some cracking before rubbing his hands together "My name is Y/N L/N, I was bitten by a radioactive spider and for fifteen years, I've been the one and only Spider-Man." He confirmed his alias "At least until about eight hours ago."

"I've been the defender of New York City." Those words immediately caught Raiden and Shang Tsung's attention "I've saved a bunch of people, fallen in love, saved the city, lost my girlfriend." He had to take a second to compose himself "Then I saved the city again. And again and again and again. Fell in love for a second time, lost my girlfriend because I caused her cancer." Again, he had to take a moment to regain himself.

Soon though there was a big smile on his face "But after everything! I still LOVE being Spider-Man so no matter how many hits I take, I ALWAYS find a way to come back, because the only thing standing on between the people and oblivion...... is me."

Raiden was mightily impressed by what he had heard from the strange man. Shang Tsung on the other hand, less so, in fact the last sentence of Y/N's monologue was down right sickening. What did interest him was about all the hits he took and him always coming back, that could be problematic.

"So you have Spider powers?" Raiden asked, with Shang Tsung also curious.

Y/N gave the thunder god a thumbs up "Correct."

"Prove it." Shang Tsung ordered.

"Prove what?" Y/N asked.

"That you have spider powers." Shang Tsung clarified, he gave Raiden a glare after shocking him earlier "We have proved ours, now you must prove yours."

A wave washed over Y/N's mind at what he was being asked to do "Man, I just got a serious case of déjà vu." Y/N said out loud, it was almost the exact same scenario that he had when Ned and MJ found him and wanted him to prove that he was Spider-Man.

L/N stood up from where he was laying and jumped vertically so that he was now clinging to the ceiling by one hand, making it look like an everyday thing, which to be fair for him it was.

Shang Tsung laughed at Y/N's so-called 'spider powers' "HA! Is that it!?"

Y/N continued to hold himself up with one hand "Oh I'm sorry, can you cling to walls?" Shang Tsung growled at Y/N's sarcasm "How about this then?" He challenged before muttering "Great, I'm now a performing spider."

With no effort, Y/N put both his hands and his feet onto the ceiling and began to crawl around as the Earthrealm and Outworld representatives watched.

"Serious déjà vu." Y/N muttered as he was crawling around the ceiling. At least when he did it for MJ and Ned, they were nice but he was pretty certain that he wasn't going to get that from Shang Tsung.

"Very impressive." Raiden praised, he was unlike any of the other Earthrealm warriors.

Shang Tsung scoffed then followed it with mocking laughter "Impressive? The standard for Earthrealm is even lower than I had initially thought if that..." He said pointing to Y/N on the ceiling "is impressive."

"You underestimate my power." Y/N proclaimed "Besides I've got something you haven't." He teased.

"And what is that?" The sorcerer questioned.

Y/N shifted his body with supreme agility so now that he was standing on the roof like it was the floor "I have the high ground."

Shang Tsung was getting more irritated by the stranger with each passing second. Raiden though had no interest in the Outworld sorcerer's growing fury "Where did you come from Y/N L/N?

Y/N hopped back down onto the floor and sat back down "Twas Halloween 2024 and I was swinging about New York patrolling Queens streets, there's always action on Halloween, plus it's the one night of the year I blend in well, I make sure people are safe and whatnot then BOOM." He said slapping his hand to emphasise his point "I'm transported to another universe." Y/N explained as the two listened, Shang Tsung was particularly fascinated in the theory of multiple universes coexisting.

"This sorcerer helped to send me and many others back to their respective homes, though I fear he has got mine a teeny bit wrong." Y/N admitted, their lack of knowledge of Spider-Man and their own odd abilities and behaviour had proved that he was in uncharted waters.

Raiden looked shocked whilst Shang Tsung looked amused, the latter began slowly clapping which confused Spider-Man and Raiden "You must be desperate Thunder God, recruiting champions from the future and a different universe." Shang Tsung smugly taunted.

His words baffled Y/N further "The future? What are you talking about?"

The Earthrealm protector could see that Y/N was confused "You are in the Earthrealm year of 1992 Y/N L/N."

Aftering hearing the year, Y/N's bulged put of his skull almost resembling that of a fly "1992!? You're joking right!? That's three years before I was born!" He asked desperately, hoping that perhaps they were pulling his leg.

"I am afraid that I do not joke." Raiden seriously answered.

The Outworld sorcerer turned to the thunder god, believing that this was purely a charade between the two and that Y/N was Earthrealm's 'ace up their sleeve' so to speak for such an important multi-realm event "He cannot be allowed to enter the tournament if he is not from Earthrealm." He stated matter of factly, despite his prior mocking of his powers, the last thing he wanted was another Earthrealm champion that the Emperor's fighters were completely unprepared for not given what was at stake.

"If I am not mistaken sorcerer, you have participants from the Netherrealm aiding you and have wormed your way into the Lin Kuei's ear to convince them to fight Outworld's battles against Earthrealm." The thunder god stated.

Raiden then glanced to Y/N who was staring obliviously at the scene unfolding in front of him "He may not be from our Earthrealm, but he has Earthrealm blood in his veins. Like it or loathe it, that makes him one of our champions."

Shang Tsung seethed through gritted teeth at Raiden's recruitment of a completely unknown fighter to him and his champions "The emperor will hear about this." The sorcerer said as he stormed out, readying for tournament to commence.

Y/N snorted after Shang Tsung's reaction, he tapped Raiden on the shoulder "He reminded me of Draco Malfoy." He then attempted an impression of Harry Potter's Slytherin nemesis "My father will hear about this." He impersonated, with a wagging fist.

Raiden looked bamboozled by what Y/N was referring to. Suddenly it hit Y/N "Oh damn, Harry Potter hasn't even been written yet." He muttered to himself "Jeez, this is a lot to get my head around." He admitted, massaging his temples with his fingers.

Raiden understood that he was still adjusting to his surroundings, completely justified in his mind "I imagine it is a lot to take in, but first I must apologise for our host."

Y/N waved, he didn't seem bothered by it at all "It's no problem. I'm a divisive figure amongst people. I've got thick skin."

"Yes and it would appear that you have gotten under the skin of our-" The thunder god gasped as he had a second vision in a matter of hours. This vision, like the last one was shrouded in a blue hue and he saw an event that brought him great hope, one where Liu Kang beat Shang Tsung in the tournament finale. Raiden remembered the words from his first vision which echoed in his mind before he himself said them.

"He must win." He murmured. The thunder god was brought out of his mind by Y/N putting his hand on his shoulder.

"Are you okay Raiden? You kinda blacked out there for a second." Y/N cautiously asked.

The Earthrealm protector did not respond to Y/N's question, thinking that perhaps his vision and the arrival of Y/N would secure the fate in his vision "Y/N L/N, I believe that you may have been sent here for a reason."

"And what reason would that be? You mentioned about me being a champion."

"Yes, a champion of Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat." Raiden revealed, however for Y/N it provided more questions than answers.

"Mortal Kombat?"

"The elder gods created Mortal Kombat to give Earthrealm a chance to defend itself against Outworld. This tournament takes place once a generation." Raiden answered.

"And this Outworld wants to what? Start a war? Obliterate the planet?" Y/N tried to piece together what Raiden was saying.

"Not exactly. Outworld's emperor Shao Kahn wants to physically absorb Earthrealm into Outworld. For him to succeed, Outworld needs to win ten mortal Kombat tournaments in a row." Raiden explained further about why Outworld was such a major threat to Earthrealm, his tone deadly serious.

Y/N sighed, he considered himself a veteran of crime fighting and battling villains against the odds, he knew that the tone of Raiden's voice sounded dire "I can probably guess, but how many have they won?"

"Nine."

Y/N rolled his eyes 'Of course they have.' He thought to himself "And if you lose this one, Outworld will conquer Earthrealm."

"Correct."

"That's quite the pressure then."

"Pressure, given from what you have told me, I feel that you can handle." Raiden stated, sounding confident despite not seeing him in action "Why did you become Spider-Man? You could hide your powers or use them for self gain? Yet you do not, why?"

Y/N pondered on Raiden's words as he looked at the web shooters on his hands, he was a long way from friendly, neighborhood Spiderman and was needed to upgrade to friendly, global Spiderman. He looked back to the Thunder God "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't. Then the bad things happen, that's on me. I've learned to accept that I can't stop everything, but that won't stop me from trying."

Y/N was exactly the type of person that he would want to fight and represent Earthrealm's honour in Raiden's opinion "Y/N, if you fight in this tournament for Earthrealm, I am certain that will give the Elder Gods time to find you a way back home."

Y/N held his hand out to Raiden "Awesome! Looks like we have a deal."

Raiden accepted Y/N's hand and shook it "Thank you, Y/N L/N. If you are ready then I would invite you to join me for the opening of the tournament." Raiden extended an invitation to L/N.

Y/N hopped out of his chair and picked up his mask, standing side by side with Raiden "You got it." The two new allies walked back to Shang Tsung's courtyard "Back home, I fought a guy made out of electricity a couple of times. He was a real pain in my ass." L/N then sighed "I miss Lightning butt."

"I cannot imagine that we will have that issue." Raiden stated.
