2 | Babysitting vultures

It was lucky enough that their homeroom teacher was running late that day, the state of Kaede's mysterious amnesia had only been whispered of, from Shuichi to Maki as he entered the already full classroom with the dazed girl. But one snooping supreme leader had overheard, and broadcast the news for everyone to hear. Quickly, the room lit up in discussion, while the pianist sat atop one of the desks, blinking demurely at the people she had foggy recollections of at best.

"Don't you think this is a matter we should inform the teachers of?" Kirumi had questioned, rather sensibly so. Of course, she wasn't one to involve herself in gossip, but this was far more than that. The concern for her classmate was clearly painted on her face, hands clasped particularly tightly in front of herself.

"I suppose we'll have to." Shuichi gave a soft sigh. "We can hardly have her going through class like this. The teachers will notice right off the bat anyway."

"Oh, yeah? And what are they gonna do about it?" Kokichi piped up with a wide grin. "Bonk her on the head and hope it knocks her memories back into place?"

"Kokichi." Maki narrowed her red glare at the boy, though he didn't seem particularly phased, grin as bright as ever. "That's not funny."

"Oh, it's not? How about this one-! Did any of you check the toilet bowl? Maybe she dropped her brain in there and it got flushed away!"

"Your jokes fucken' suck and now isn't the time for them anyway, shit head!" Miu was the next to pipe up, agitation clear in her body language; one fist slamming down on the desk she was sat behind.

The movement made Kaede jump and slightly flinch. She wasn't sure what was going on, or who these colourful people were – there was a whole class full of them, talking about her but none of them seeming to talk to her, as if she were a ghost that they couldn't see but had heard whispering tales of – was this how it normally was? She'd been told this was her usual class, after all.

"Kaede." The patient voice of the boy who found her called. That was her name – He'd been right about that, she could remember that much by now, but not a whole lot else. Her eyes snapped to meet his. "Do you remember anything that might have happened to you? Anything that could help us solve this? No matter how fuzzy it is, it might help us."

The girl paused before she answered, thinking increasingly hard. She barely remembered her own name, even that much had been a struggle of it's own. Her mind wouldn't stretch any further back than the sight of her reflection blinking in the mirror of the blue-painted bathroom, the feelings of sick disorientation before she had stumbled out into a hallway she swore she'd never seen before. That's where the story started, nothing more, nothing less. Her memory contained nothing more than the last 20 minutes of her life, despite the fact she had lived many years before.

She heaved a sigh of defeat and the classmates who had turned their gaze on her like vultures all echoed this, giving a similar sigh of disappointment.

"Of course she can't remember anything, Shu-Shu~" Kaede was momentarily relived someone understood, even if it was the boy the others all seemed to scorn so easily. "You know she has a brain like a sieve!"

     Or not.

"If you don't have anything useful to say, then keep your mouth shut, degenerate male!" A particularly boisterous girl demanded, one hand flying out as if to knock him down with sheer will-power from the other side of the classroom. Kaede felt like this girl's name was... Tenko? Was that right? She was pretty distinct, the name popped into her head after a minute of giving the girl a bemused stare. Yes, that seemed right.

Kaede let her gaze sweep around the room and land on various other people, slowly but surely conjuring up some names. Where had they come from? The locked depths of her mind, somehow. Everything else was off limits, but at least a few names were coming forth, that was something. Kaito. Ryoma. Angie.

The debate continued on around her.

"Well... Did anyone see anything? Today? Yesterday? Anything suspicious at all?" The same, snappy, dark haired girl let her eyes scan around too. Kaede focused on her. Maki. That's what that girl's name was. Was she always this... cold? She wasn't sure.

"Actually!" The other blonde from before spoke up, and Kaede stared at her too while she spoke. It felt like she had an 'M' name... what could it be? "I spoke with Kaede this morning! We walked here together! She was totally fucken' fine last I saw! I screwed off to the engineering lab as soon as I got here though."

"Miu!" Kaede exclaimed in triumph, as the name sprang to mind. Her cheeks heated in embarrassment as she realised everyone was giving her a bewildered look. "I- Remembered her name... Sorry."

"Kaede. Did you walk to school with Miu this morning? Do you remember?" The girl- Who's name was almost certainly Kirumi, asked, and Kaede's brow creased as she tried to recall any such memory. Nothing came of it.

"I'm sorry, I don't." She shook her head with an apologetic frown. "I don't remember anything before the bathroom...-"

"The bathroom, huh~?" The same boy from before – she was yet to figure out his name, cut in with a grin. The grin hadn't faded at all, apparently he found this rather funny. Well, at least someone was enjoying this. "The boy's room, right? Maybe Kaede was being a pervert and got sucker punched for it~! It would totally serve her right!"

"I wasn't-!" She began, though really she had no reasonable grounds to deny it, since she simply couldn't remember. Though, she was sure enough that no matter how she was before, she wouldn't have done something like that.

"That's not really funny." A boy with soft green hair scolded in a soothing voice. His named managed to escape her too, but he seemed calm, like the kind of person she would probably like. He turned his gaze towards Miu. "Are you sure you walked with Kaede this morning? Not some other morning?"

"A-Are you calling me a liar?!" The blonde girl recoiled in shocked horror – Kaede thought it was rather a theatrical response – but it was amusing to watch. This one seemed like a real drama queen.

"It's most likely Miu is telling the truth... After all, Kaede seems to remember nothing, of course she would have forgotten such a thing too." A tall, spindly boy spoke soon after. It was giving her a headache trying to dig up the missing names, but his sprung forth. Korekiyo.

"Either way, we aren't getting anywhere with this." The small, gruff boy she'd matched the name 'Ryoma' too spoke from the back of the room, where he'd been listening to the conversation only half-heartedly. "It's no use digging up what happened when we still don't know what to do now."

"That's right." A rather plain, blue haired girl nodded quickly. "We need to decide on a course of action."

"You know, you're all saying you need to do things, but aren't actually doing things~ Are you all full of hot air or what~?"

"Well shut up and we'll get to that!" Kaito's voice rose in annoyance – it seemed he wasn't the only one growing tired of Kokichi, a few others rolling their eyes not to subtly.

"I think..." Shuichi began carefully, one finger rested against his chin, eyes unfocused and staring into the middle-ground as he thought. "It's best if we have someone taking care of Kaede at all times until we can figure out how to reverse this."

There were a few murmurs of agreement.

"Is that alright by you, Kaede?" Maki asked. Kaede found herself slightly startled by the intensity of the girl's red eyes, and she nodded automatically in response.

"Ah- Yes!" She smiled sheepishly to the others. "If it's not a bother, that is... I feel like I'm getting a babysitter..."

"I'm glad that's settled..." Shuichi gave a soft sigh, turning and casting his eye around everyone else in the room. "I think we should take it in shifts. We can work that all out later, but for now, I think that's the best we can do."

"I just have oooone more question~" Kokichi grinned, holding up a singular finger to catch the room's attention, violet eyes coming to rest on Kaede.

"What is it...?" Someone asked, but Kaede wasn't sure too. Her breath caught as she noted the strange, devious twinkle in his eyes.

"What were you doing in the boy's bathroom~?"

     "Aha..."
