Chapter 9

Your POV

I pulled away a little from Stein.

"What was that for?"

He smiled gently. He moved his hand up to my forehead to move some hair from my face. His touch wasn't crazed or rough like it is when he fights. It was gentle, slow. Loving in fact. He tucked the loose hair behind my ear and traced his fingers from my jaw to my chin before pulling me close again.

"I've known Spirit for years and he's never once told me something like that." He chuckled lightly. "Maybe it was because I experimented on him when he slept?"

I smiled. "He was rather terrified of you when you got here."

He smiled back and stood as he put me up before putting me on the bed gently.

"We should go speak to Lord Death."

I looked up at him.

"Are you sure you're feeling alright?"

He smiled and gave me a peace sign and a smile. "Better than ever."

I smiled and stood. He started walking out of the cell and I followed. I was trailing behind him and focused my senses on looking at his soul. It was steady and calm. Not a speck of madness in it. There weren't any signs that it had ever been there either. I smiled lightly.

I caught up and began walking at the same pace he was in. He glanced at me for a moment before looking back down the hall. We stopped outside of the Death Room. I looked up at him.

"I'm going to the library to try and understand how to remove Medusa from the little girl Rachael. Come get me if anything happens, all right?"

He nodded and I walked off to the library. Putting my headphones on and playing my music I began searching for books in the library about separating an evil soul from a good one. I was sitting in the library for a couple hours. I knew the talks with Lord Death can go rather long. I stood and went to put the last book I had back on the shelf. I walked by the mirror and stopped in my tracks.

I turned and looked to see my reflection. Or what was supposed to be my reflection. I had three kishin eyes and a wicked smile. My hair was messy and covered in blood. I grabbed my face before laughing. I stared at what was supposed to be a maddened version of myself. I blinked a couple times when someone touched my shoulder.

I turned to see Stein. He was looking at me rather worriedly.

"(y/n), are you alright?"

I nodded and stood up straight.

"I'm fine, how'd the talk with Lord Death go?"

He turned his screw a little and sighed. "Inconclusive."

"About what?"

He shook his head. "We can discuss more tomorrow. Right now I want to know what you saw in the mirror."

I shook my head and smiled. "It was nothing."

"Don't lie to me. You were laughing when I came in here. It looked as if you had been caught in the madness."

I sighed and looked down. "I saw, myself."

"What were you doing?" He tilted his head.

"I had three kishin eyes and a wicked smile. My hair was messy and covered in blood. I began to pull at my face and laugh before you came in here."

He put his hand on my head and ruffled my hair.

"None of that is going to happen on my watch."

I pushed his hand from my head and yelled as tears filled my eyes. "Don't you get it? I don't want to become like that. It scares me beyond recognition. Every day the kishin is free I worry about it swallowing me whole and turning me into a monster."

I slid down the wall behind me and sighed as I balled myself up. I felt two arms wrap around me and pick me up. I looked up to see Stein lift me from the floor. He looked at me his gaze hard but his eyes were soft and gentle.

"You have nothing to fear. You kept me from Medusa, now I'll keep you from the madness."

I nodded lightly. He put me down and ruffled my hair again. "Now let's get home, I want to be home before dark."

I smiled lightly and raced him from the DWMA. He won and I was panting and laughing at him as he was laying on the ground.

"I need to quit smoking."

"You still beat me, I bet it's only because of your long legs though."

He stood slowly and looked at me. "Admit it you're slow."

I smiled and hit his arm. "I am not!"

He chuckled and walked inside.

"Then why were you so far behind?"

"You're like twice my height"

He shook his head and shrugged. "Whatever you say, (y/n)"

I smiled at him before I sat down on the couch. He began to make dinner as he puffed on a cancer stick. I smiled lightly and leaned back on the couch. Will things always be this easy like this? Even though we are student and professor in a world with a newly reborn kishin? There's only so much normal two people with madness can have.
