Chapter 6
"So, this is it," Ravenflight broke the silence. She had gathered the four of them into a secluded corner of the gathering island to talk.
"Yes, I guess," Amberclaw sighed. "It was nice to be free. I'm sorry I was so arrogant at the start of our mission."
"Bye," Ebonywind, well, Love, spat out before stalking away to join Rowanstar and the rest of ShadowClan.
Behind her, Ebonywind was aware of the others glaring at her. But it wasn't her fault. She couldn't control Love. If she could, she couldn't be bothered to always. Life sucked.
Soon, the four parted ways, each returning to their Clan. Ebonywind padded after Rowanstar in silence. It seemed like she didn't belong here anymore, after being away for so long.
Ebonywind jumped when someone went up to her, purring. When was the last time someone had been excited to see her?
"Hi, Silverspots," Ebonywind was less than excited to see who it was. Her old best friend who was no longer her best friend.
"Ebonywind, you won't believe it," Silverspots was breathless.
"Believe what? That you hate me?" Ebonywind mewed scornfully. She even surprised herself. This wasn't Love speaking. This was her. She was mad at Silverspots for breaking off their friendship.
Silverspots looked hurt but continued on. "The White Dove fixed me!"
"Ok and?" Ebonywind said rudely.
"How do you not know- oh right. You weren't here. You'd understand if you were here," Silverspots said bitterly.
"Tell me," she said, suddenly curious.
"The White Dove can heal anything," Silverspots hissed. "Goodbye."
"Wait! Silverspots!" Ebonywind growled in frustration. She had ruined it again.
Rowanstar suddenly called for silence. "There's some type of...wind thing! It's in our camp and it's destroying the camp. We must fight it!"
Yowls of agreement met Ebonywind's ears and she charged into the camp, shocked immediately.
The camp was in ruins, the wind thing circling around and picking up the vines and thorns. A squirrel was also in the wind spinner.
Blazeheart ran at the wind thing, claws unsheathed, and he clawed it before he was swept into it. "HELP!" he shrieked.
Ebonywind watched, astounded. "It's a wind spinner! It'll take you!" She yowled.
And just like that, Blazeheart fell down to the earth. The speed and the height was too much. Every cat heard his neck snap.
Ebonywind was horrified and shied away from the wind spinner. It could do that much damage? All of the cats, having had the same reaction, yowled in fear and gathered their families and fled.
Rowanstar called them all back and they grudgingly responded to his call as he led them out of the camp and to the refuge that Ebonywind had once used. They sheltered there like prey, shivering as they waited for dawn to break.
Ebonywind didn't blame the cats for being terrified out of their wits of that wind spinner. Even now, Blazeheart's body lay in the camp, still, frozen, and a fearful expression on that poor tom's face. They retrieved and buried it the next day before Rowanstar called a Clan meeting.
"We must discuss the issue of the Dynasty!" Rowanstar caterwauled.
"We must help the Dynasty!" Ebonywind projected her voice loudly.
"That's only because you went on the quest," a cat muttered.
"No arguing!" Rowanstar tried to maintain the peace.
But it was too late. The camp had split into two sides; the Dynasty's side and the non-Dynasty's side. The cats broke into a fight. Sounds of battle filled the once peaceful air and Ebonywind watched with horror, Rowanstar at her side.
"Stop!" Rowanstar was losing control of his Clan, and every cat knew it.
Ebonywind joined him, but she was as much an outsider as him. They were useless.
They watched as the fight turned vicious and the wind spinner advanced on them, appearing out of nowhere.
'Stay back!" Ebonywind tried to warn them.
She failed miserably.
Robinstrike and Hollystrike were swept up by the wind spinner, causing them to fall from a height. But before the cats could retrieve their bodies, the wind spinner took them and fled.
They were gone.
"This is your fault!" the cats began blaming each other.
Hollystrike and Robinstrike's family were driven by grief and stayed in a corner together, watching as the fight resumed.
It was a horrible day.
Once Rowanstar was able to stop the fight, he addressed the Clan. "I have made my final decision. The wind spinner is from StarClan. We must help the Dynasty!"
Not all the cats were pleased. But Rowanstar's word was final, and the cats trooped off to find a nest under a bush, if they were lucky, or slept in the open, if they weren't lucky.
Ebonywind and Silverspots put aside their differences as they grieved for the fallen warriors of ShadowClan. They built a nest together and used each other as body warmth.
The day had been full of ups and downs, but Ebonywind was ready for a much needed nap.
Until Love spoke to her.
Hello, Ebonywind.
Ebonywind groaned and put her paws over her ears, as if this would drown out Love. Love kept whispering to her, making her almost reject Silverspots again. Was the first rejection because of Love too? Maybe Love had been in her permanently. Ebonywind didn't know.
Love had started to bother Ebonywind in more ways than one. She was losing all her relationships; with her foster parents, her siblings, her friends...
They were gone.
They were all gone. All Ebonywind had was Love, which she didn't want.
She didn't sleep that night. But that was okay. Her dreams would've been of the wind spinner terrorizing the Clans. How were the other Clans faring? ShadowClan had lost three cats in one day.
Her thoughts began to race and race and she sighed in exhaustion. It was too much.
Everything Ebonywind's life had stood for was gone.
