Chapter 7
Emma's POV
"Okay, so the sky is black. So what?" Rory asked.
"That's bad, that's what,"I snapped. I looked back at the sky. "We split up again. Amy, this time, please, just stay in the TARDIS, the Child will probably target you so just trust me on this and stay in the TARDIS. Got it?"
Amy harrumphed. "I don't get why I have to stay in the TARDIS. I'm not a baby!"
"The Child has a special hatred for humans and Time Lords alike," the Doctor explained. It took some persuasion, but we convinced her to go back in the TARDIS. I locked the door. I faced Rory and the Doctor. "Rory, you go with the Doctor. I'm going alone."
The Doctor looked shocked. "Emma, you could get killed!"
I shook my head. "I've got a plan. Follow the Child, lead her to the Lincoln Tunnel- just don't go in after twenty minutes."
"Why not?" Rory asked.
"You'd get blown up," I explained.
"You're blowing up the Lincoln Tunnel?!"
"No choice," I shrugged.
"How much time do you need?" asked the Doctor.
"I just said. Twenty minutes to place all the mines and activate them."
"You know, I don't like this idea. But if it works..." the Doctor voice trailed off. "I'm all for it. What about you?"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I mean, when the tunnel blows, where are you going to be?"
"On the other side," I said. "I've always wanted to see New Jersey."
"Alright then-" the Doctor began, but I was off and running.
Doctor's POV
What have we gotten ourselves into?
I faced Rory. "Let's search for the Child. You heard the plan."
Rory nodded and looked at the sky. Then at me. It was so dark, I could barely see his face. "Doctor... how are we going to see her in this darkness?" Rory asked.
"Good point. You've got a flashlight?"
Rory shook his head no. I sighed. "Wonderful. Now what?"
Emma's POV
I plugged another mine into the floor of the Lincoln Tunnel. I sighed. I was hoping the plan would work. I stepped over that one to plant the last mine into the floor. Then I backed up to New Jersey. This was going to work. If not... I tried not to think about what would happen if it didn't. I leaned at the end of the tunnel and looked up. The sky was dark here too; when I held my hand in front of my face, I couldn't see it. Damn.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed the Doctor's number. He picked up. "Doctor, the tunnel is set. Have you found her?"
His voice was crackly. "Nope. Why am I not surprised?"
"Because she's clever and..." my voice trailed off as a rush of cold wind chilled me.
"And what?" the Doctor's voice was urgent.
"And she's right behind me," I whispered. "Get to the tunnel. Now." and I hung up. I turned around slowly.
The Child stood there, black robes swirling around her. She had her scythe raised above her head. She brought it down, and I rolled to one side, and she hit a mine. The ground trembled, and water poured down from a crack in the ceiling of the Lincoln Tunnel. I had no choice but run in the collapsing tunnel.
Rory's POV
We managed to avoid a couple of mines and enter the tunnel. I looked at the Doctor. "What the hell is that rumbling noise?"
My question was answered when Emma came running, her black hair flying behind her like a very short cape. "RUUUN!" she screamed, passing us and grabbing the Doctor's wrist. We turned and sprinted after Emma- the Doctor had no choice- as the tunnel collapsed. And, at the end of the tunnel, so did Emma. "Never-again," she panted. The Doctor nodded in agreement. We looked back at the Child. She was standing there, across the filthy Hudson, scythe in one hand, robes swirling around her. I murmured to the others, "Come on, before she follows," and we ran back to the TARDIS.
*******
"And how did your excursion go?" asked Amy smugly.
"Well, we blew up the Lincoln Tunnel, nearly killed ourselves, and yeah," said Emma. I noticed she had one hand on her side. She looked paler than usual. "You're hurt," I said.
She smiled. "Really, nothing to worry about," and sat down in her chair, wincing as she did so.
"I'm worried," I said, removing her hand forcefully. Her shirt was torn. Blood soaked it. Emma gave me the evilest dirty look I had ever seen. Amy was also giving me a dirty look. Emma ran her hand over the wound. It was long and deep, but when Emma ran her hand over it, it healed itself. "Regeneration energy. I can heal many things with it," she explained. She stood up. "I've gotta check the potion. I think the two and a half hours are up," and she rushed out of the room. When she was gone, Amy kissed me. "I'm so glad you weren't hurt," she said. I smiled. "Yeah, I know," I said.
"Why did you blow up the Lincoln Tunnel?" Amy asked.
"Actually, it was Emma's idea."
"Nice. Why?"
"I guess she thought she was going to bring down the Child by doing that. Didn't work," I said.
"Because it's the Child," she guessed. I grinned. "Yeah."
"She thought she'd bring down the Child. She didn't know much about the Child, and she thought maybe blowing up the Lincoln Tunnel would at least cripple the she-demon. She doesn't have any grudges with the Lincoln Tunnel, and if she did, then..." the Doctor's voice trailed off. He went back to murmuring to his TARDIS and stroking her.
Emma poked her head in. She had removed the ripped shirt and was now wearing a simple white shirt and a leather jacket. "I think she's still by the Hudson. Let me check," she strolled up to the control and pulled down her little screen. It showed the Child standing there. Then it blanked off and these words appeared:
I know you are watching me. You think you will be the downfall of me. But you are wrong. I will be the downfall of you, and the Doctor, and your petty human friends. I will be the downfall of Earth, and you will not stop me. I will murder anyone, on the spot, who trys to stop me, who tries to disobey me. You have been warned.
