Chapter 16

Crystal's POV

We shouldn't be spending time in a stinkin' TARDIS! We should be saving Emma!

But the fear of being lost was still there, and I forgot about Emma. Then I remembered: Emma's soul was being eaten by the Child! It was taking over her!

I said angrily, "Have you forgot about my sister?!"

The Doctor looked over surprised at this outburst. I couldn't blame him; I had been quiet the whole time. At last, he said, "No. I'm just..." his voice trailed off.

"Just what?" I snapped angrily. When he didn't answer, I repeated it. "Just what! Answer me!" I was close to tears.

"I'm thinking about how to remove the scythe without touching it," he said after a long pause. "And please don't raise your voice. I know you're upset," he added quickly.

"Then why don't you help me?" my voice had dropped so much, I sounded more pathetic than angry. And I was.

"I am. Didn't you hear me?" he muttered, almost to himself. Then he straightened his bow tie and pulled the TARDIS in motion. "Geronimo!"

Amy's POV

Where the hell was the Doctor? He said he would be back, but it had been twenty minutes. That was short, but still... it shouldn't have taken the Doctor to get Crystal.

I told this to Rory and he said, "He'll be back. He's always back."

But he was staring at Emma and I don't think he was paying attention.

I paced back and forth as the minutes ticked by. I was getting impatient.

After five (!) more minutes, I made up my mind. "I'm going to go find him."

"Mother, I don't think you should," said River. I raised an eyebrow at her. "And why not?"

"Don't you recognize the noise?" she pointed out. For the first time, I noticed it too.

The Doctor climbed out of the TARDIS, with a red-eyed and angry-looking Crystal. "Got her!" he exclaimed. She threw him a dirty look. I guess even for an eight- year old, mentally, she was pretty angry at the Doctor about her sister.

I couldn't be closer to the truth.

Doctor's POV

Crystal wouldn't talk, but she kept throwing me dirty looks, which made the ride all the better. She was obviously angry and upset, as the tears on her face showed. I guess I wouldn't blame her. Emma was her only family, her sister, and now she had something possessing her, too. It didn't help that Emma had just chosen to scream from the agony coming from the devilish scythe when we stepped out of the TARDIS. And it took all my strength to hold Crystal back so she wouldn't rip the scythe out of Emma's hand. It was-in one word- pathetic. Crystal cared nothing more for her sister. Finally, I told her, "If you get injured by the scythe, imagine what Emma would feel about her little sister getting wounded or worse, killed. If you truly care about Emma, stop fighting to get the scythe out of her hand."

This shocked her into silence. I used this silence to my advantage. I scooped up a rock, which of course brought more hysterics from Crystal. "Don't! You might hit her!"

I ignored her and threw the rock. It bounced off the scythe without a bent. Then Crystal said, "Doctor, I have an idea. Just listen to it, please. For once, take my thoughts into consideration."

I looked at her, then at Amy, River, and Rory standing on the other side of Emma. "What?"

"Doctor, remember how the exploding arrows broke the scythe, but didn't hurt me? What if it's the same? What if- Doctor, you're not listening to me-" but I stopped once I saw he was doing. He picked up Athena and did exactly what I had tried less than an hour ago. He hit the timer for an exploding arrow and threw it.

I remember the explosion as though it was just ten minutes ago. I remember the huge, multi-colored ball of light once the arrow collided with the scythe, destroying the Child. I can still feel the Doctor shoving me down, seeing the others doing the same. I can still hear the scream like knifes on stone, if it was a thousand knives on stones multiplied by a hundred. That wouldn't even describe the screech. I can still feel the heat searing at my back, making me feel like I was on fire- white hot fire. I closed my eyes and tried to ignore the heat, the light leaking through my shut lids, and the noise. Once I opened them, there was a huge crater. And in the middle lai

"Emma!" I cried, running to her, but she held up a hand. "Get me-" she coughed- "to the TARDIS. My TARDIS."

Amy and the Doctor helped her up. I stayed back though, because I knew not to bother Emma when she wasn't feeling her hundred percent best. Even with Time Lords that can happen. After a while, I followed, though. I ran as fast as I could after them, and I was fast. In a moment, I caught up with them. Emma looked terrible. Her face was ashen, her eyes half shut. Once they got to the TARDIS, the Doctor pulled the string holding the key around her neck off and shoved it into the lock. I stepped in.

The TARDIS looked absolutely different. The Doctor and Amy laid Emma on the floor, which was now blue, and stepped away. I knelt down next to Emma. "Emma, are you okay?" I asked.

She grabbed my hand and squeezed it. "Crystal, I've missed you. I don't know-" her body convulsed as she had a coughing fit. When she was done, she continued. "It was excruciatingly painful with the demon in me. I don't know how you survived."

I smiled. "I was knocked out as the Child took over me. And then trapped in a stone body for nine hundred years. I really don't know, Emma. I really don't know."

She grinned back and closed her eyes. "I'm tired."

I nodded, then glared at the Doctor and Amy. They quickly left.
