Chapter 7
Ravenpaw stood, panting, above Dark's limp body. Ruthless was back, and she was looking at it with a mixture of horror and fury.
"No!" she howled.
"We leave you now, RevengeClan." Ravenpaw announced. "I'm sorry, but I had to."
She beckoned Ebonypaw and Amberpaw and they left RevengeClan in a stunned silence.
Timeskip-
"Should I have killed him?" Ravenpaw asked her two best friends.
"You had to. It was your destiny." Ebonypaw mewed firmly.
"I suppose so..." Ravenpaw muttered.
She glanced at Amberpaw. The RiverClan cat had been strangely silent on their journey back. Now, they stood at the edge of the moor. Ravenpaw gazed longingly across the moor, eager to race the other apprentices again.
"We've been gone for almost a moon," Ebonypaw remarked, looking up at the moon. It was almost full. "I'd guess the Gathering is tomorrow night or the day after that."
"We should go back." Amberpaw rasped.
"Are you okay, Amberpaw?" Ravenpaw moved forward to brush pelts with her, but Amberpaw hissed and stumbled away.
"You're turning into the angry cat we met at the Moonpool," Ebonypaw teased.
"GO AWAY!" Amberpaw roared.
Ravenpaw took a step back, flinching. "I suppose she's right. I'll see you guys at the Gathering."
"Bye, Ravenpaw, Amberpaw," Ebonypaw flicked her tail cheerily before heading towards ShadowClan's pine forest.
"Bye, Ebonypaw." Ravenpaw waved her tail in response. "Goodbye, Amberpaw."
Amberpaw didn't respond, she only looked to the marshland of RiverClan.
"Amberpaw. You're not okay, are you?" Ravenpaw drew closer, but Amberpaw pushed her away.
She spoke up at last. "I guess I don't know if I want to go back," Amberpaw muttered.
"I understand," Ravenpaw purred, shocked to see she meant it. Ravenpaw didn't know whether she should go back. She'd had so much more fun out on her own with Amberpaw and Ebonypaw, but she was a medicine cat of her Clan. How could she abandon them?
"I'll go, then." Amberpaw muttered bitterly before leaping off the ledge they were on and running across the moor to RiverClan land. Amberpaw didn't even look back, not even once.
She's probably just tired. But I really thought we were becoming...friends.
Ravenpaw sat on the ledge by herself, grooming her fur.
"StarClan! Should I go back?" she asked the stars.
One of the stars started moving, and she moved back, surprised. The star formed into Ravenwing.
"Your Clan has a medicine cat, but that's not the point." Ravenwing mewed. "Your Clan will need you in the future. You have a great destiny ahead of you."
"So, you're saying I should go back," Ravenpaw murmured.
"I'm saying that every cat has their destiny, but you get to choose it. Remember the vision I showed you?"
Ravenpaw nodded. How could she forget it?
Ravenwing dipped his head. "That could still happen, unless you're with your Clan, guiding them towards a brighter future. There was a prophecy made long before your birth, you know? It was given to Bluestar, the leader of ThunderClan before Firestar, who was before Luckystar."
"What was it?" Ravenpaw said, interested.
"The locked-up raven will spread its wings and bring a brighter light to the Clans." Ravenwing quoted. "Bluestar thought it was me, but it's you."
"Talking about me?" A blue-gray she-cat shimmered into view. Ravenwing shrank back.
"Hi, Bluestar," Ravenwing mewed, scared.
"I'm just pulling your tail," Bluestar purred. "We agreed we would tell her about the prophecy. "Ravenpaw," she turned her attention to Ravenpaw. "You must fulfill your destiny. The Clans will be lost without you."
Ravenpaw opened her mouth to protest but Bluestar and Ravenwing were both gone. In her head, she imagined Bluestar lecturing Ravenwing about revealing too much information. Purring, she decided to go back. All the Clans needed her.
Ravenpaw crept through the grass, seeing the WindClan camp up ahead. She let out a purr of excitement and bounded into the camp, raising her voice. "I'm back!"
Crowstar was the first to leave the dens, and his eyes widened in surprise. "Ravenpaw's back!"
All around her, cats came up to her, congratulating her, before Crowstar called for silence.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here before me for a Clan meeting!" he yowled.
"You're back!" Mosspaw purred.
"Yes," Ravenpaw agreed.
"We're going to have our warrior assessments soon!" Tinypaw mewed.
"Silence!" Crowstar ordered. "Ravenpaw, step forward."
Ravenpaw obeyed, keeping her head high as she stalked forward proudly.
"Did you finish the quest?" he asked.
"I did. I killed Dark, who was the leader of RevengeClan." She answered.
"Ravenpaw, do you promise to obey the will of StarClan, and to serve your Clan as a medicine cat and a warrior for the rest of your life?" Crowstar said suddenly.
"I do." Ravenpaw replied firmly. No cat could've meant it more.
"Then I name you Ravenflight, in honor of your swiftness in completing the quest, as well as to honor Kestrelflight. StarClan honors your determination and bravery, and we welcome you as a full medicine cat and warrior of WindClan!" Crowstar caterwauled.
Ravenflight looked at her Clanmates. From shy Acornheart to battle-scarred Tornear, she had their respect now. They knew she was loyal, and they knew StarClan had approved of her. That was all she needed.
"Ravenflight! Ravenflight!" Her Clanmates yowled their support.
Ravenflight dipped her head shyly. "Thank you, Crowstar."
Crowstar led her aside into his den. "You may reside in the medicine den or in the warriors' den. Our new medicine cat is Wolfpaw. Willowshine trained him."
"I'll stay in the medicine den and continue Wolfpaw's training. Any other changes, Crowstar?"
"Yes," Crowstar murmured. "Lilystream gave birth to Blackkit and Lightkit and Tornear retired to the elders' den."
"Alright." Ravenflight agreed. "I'll start my duties again."
Crowstar's eyes had a pained expression but he nodded and shuffled to the back of his den.
Ravenflight left the den, wincing from the sunlight.
"Hi!" Ravenflight looked down to see Wolfpaw.
"Hi, Wolfpaw," she greeted him curtly.
"Can we learn something today? Willowshine says that learning one thing everyday is very good for me!" Wolfpaw chirped.
"No." Ravenflight was too tired to mentor an apprentice. "Willowshine is a RiverClan cat. We're WindClan."
"Okay! I'll see you at dawn tomorrow then!" Wolfpaw scurried into the medicine den. Ravenflight followed him slowly.
Ravenflight gasped upon seeing the den. There were herb scraps on the floor, moss was all over the floor and cobwebs floated through the air.
"Wolfpaw! Why is the den so messy?" Ravenflight demanded.
Wolfpaw cowered. "W-Willowshine says mess is good,"
"Liar," Ravenflight growled. "I'll tidy it this time, but next time it's your job to make sure it stays clean."
Any cat would think Wolfpaw was a mouse-brain. She thought angrily.
Ravenflight gathered the herbs scraps and threw them out, then rolled the moss into balls and stacked them neatly in one corner. She caught the cobwebs and entered the herb store. Her jaw gaped open.
There were no herbs in the store, only dead mice, rabbits and even some fish.
"Wolfpaw, care to explain?" Ravenflight demanded coldly.
"Willowshine," Wolfpaw started.
"Don't even get me started on that," Ravenflight snarled. "You're a lying apprentice and a useless medicine cat! We don't use mice and rabbits! We don't even eat fish!"
Wolfpaw trembled on the floor.
"Lay off him a bit," Lilystream and Blackkit had appeared at the den entrance. "Blackkit has a thorn in his pad, can you treat him?"
"Of course, I can, it's my job, isn't it?" Ravenflight licked the pad a few times and eased the thorn out. "But I can't give you any herbs since this useless cat hasn't even got any in the store!"
Lilystream let out a purr. "I'll ask Crowstar to lend you Mosspaw and Tinypaw for tomorrow," she said before leaving.
"I don't suppose you've got nests either," Ravenflight grumbled.
Wolfpaw looked abashed. "The moss on the ground was the nests."
"Fox-dung!" Ravenflight cursed. "Well, we'll make new nests. Wolfpaw, you can do that, while I finish cleaning up the store."
Wolfpaw nodded and left her in the store.
A small purr rumbled in her throat. Maybe she and Wolfpaw could be friends.
