Chapter 12
"So, you know." Luckystar's tone was unreadable, her blue eyes scorching as she looked at them.
"I found out while I was unconscious," Ravenflight proceeded to explain everything. When she got to the bit about Rainfall, Luckystar's posture slumped.
"I shouldn't have sent him away," she kept muttering. "I killed him."
Ravenflight finished the story and looked expectantly at her mother. "You're our mother." She stated.
Amberclaw nodded in agreement.
"I suppose I am. StarClan, that makes me seem old," Luckystar's tail flicked idly.
"Why?" Ebonywind burst out, her green eyes filled with something Ravenflight had not seen on her sister, ever. Ebonywind's eyes were filled with anger.
"A prophecy told me that I must make sure you three never learnt that I was your mother, otherwise all the Clans would fall. I told Crowstar, Hailstar and Rowanstar, and they agreed to take one of you each when you were kits." Luckystar said heavily.
A memory flickered inside Ravenflight. One buried so deep down, only the words that Luckystar had spoken just then sparked it.
"I remember," she mewed amazingly. "I remember Crowstar taking me from the border."
"I remember Hailstar taking me to the RiverClan camp," Amberclaw said with the same mix of amazement and wonder that Ravenflight was feeling.
Beside them, Ebonywind shook her head frantically. "No!" she cried. "This can't be possible! They told me I was a ShadowClan cat who lost my parents!"
"Ebonywind," Luckystar tried to calm the panicked she-cat down. "It was for your own good."
"I won't believe it. I can't! I mustn't!" Ebonywind looked up at Ravenflight, her eyes begging, before she coughed lowly and fell still.
"Jayfeather! Larkleaf! We need help in here," Luckystar called to the ThunderClan medicine cats.
"I can help too," Ravenflight said roughly, calling off the ThunderClan medicine cats. She rolled Ebonywind onto her side and sniffed her body.
"Well?" Luckystar's mew was worried.
"She's fainted from the shock. But Ebonywind will be fine."
Luckystar almost collapsed in relief. "I'm sorry, kits."
"We understand." Amberclaw's eyes were heavily guarded. "But we don't appreciate it. We've grown up with no love, no sympathy, buried secrets and memories. We've been totally alone our whole life, when you're telling us we could've had a normal kithood like any other cat."
"Amberclaw's right," Ravenflight said softly. "You took our whole lives away from us. I can see what you had to do, but I don't like it at all. I hate it."
Amberclaw and Ravenflight gently bent down and picked up Ebonywind's limp body and carried it away from the ThunderClan camp. The cats wordlessly moved aside to let them through.
Ravenflight realized it quickly. Everyone in ThunderClan knew what happened, yet no one told me!
"They knew." Amberclaw echoed her thoughts. "They all knew. Everyone but us."
"I'll leave you here," Ravenflight turned her head. "I'll take Ebonywind back."
"Fine," Amberclaw dipped her head. "Thanks for the truth."
"It wasn't as wonderful as I imagined," Ravenflight admitted. "Thanks for listening."
The sisters split paths, Ravenflight to ShadowClan to take Ebonywind home, and Amberclaw back to RiverClan.
Ebonywind woke up mid journey, blinking her eyes slowly. "Where am I?"
"ShadowClan," Ravenflight responded.
"Thanks," Ebonywind rasped. "I needed to know about my parents."
"We'll be together until the end," Ravenflight promised.
"Promise." She vowed.
Ebonywind managed a weak purr before entering the ShadowClan camp. Immediately, she heard loud voices.
"I messed up all our lives," Ravenflight thought bitterly.
---
Ravenflight traipsed back to WindClan's camp, dreading the expressions.
"You know?" Crowstar met her at the camp entrance.
"I do." She held her head high. "And I'm angry."
"Well, come in," Crowstar ducked his head.
Ravenflight snarled at him and entered the camp.
"You're back!" Tinypaw yowled and ran to nuzzle Ravenflight.
Mosspaw was right behind her.
"Hi, Tinypaw, hi, Mosspaw," Ravenflight mewed uncertainly.
"Tinyrose now!" the black she-cat mewed triumphantly. "And my brother is Mosseyes!"
"Crowstar was super mad at Wolfpaw!" Tinyrose gossiped eagerly.
"Yeah!" Mosseyes mewed.
"Enough!" Crowstar caterwauled. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here before me for a Clan meeting!"
Ravenflight followed the otherwise to her leader.
"You all know of the story I told you, that Ravenflight was a rogue kit, found on the boundaries. That story was false." Crowstar paused.
"Traitor!" A cat yowled.
Ravenflight winced. Crowstar had done it for the good of the Clans.
"The true story, is that Ravenflight is Luckystar's kit, along with Ebonywind and Amberclaw, in ShadowClan and RiverClan." Crowstar sighed. "Luckystar warned me that the Clans would fall if I didn't take Ravenflight in, so I agreed. Now Ravenflight has discovered the secret."
"What now?" Lilystream called.
"We give Ravenflight a choice. She may either stay with us in WindClan or join ThunderClan." Crowstar shivered.
"I'm staying." Ravenflight declared. "WindClan is my home. I have friends here."
"But you have family in ThunderClan!" Hawkclaw said, bewildered.
"ThunderClan is no family of mine. My mother may have birthed me, but she gave me up. It was WindClan that took me in and raised me and it is WindClan that is my true family. Maybe not by blood, but by bond. ThunderClan abandoned me. Prophecy or no prophecy, I'm staying." Ravenflight declared.
"Wise words," Crowstar rumbled. "Sappy and kittypetish, but wise."
Ravenflight dipped her head. "Thank you for letting me stay in WindClan; I appreciate it."
