030b - On a Date Part 2
(030b - On A Date Part 2)
Just like I said on IG (for those that saw the post on my story), I had to divide the chapter and transfer the remaining to the next because what I thought would serve as an introduction to their date has taken the entire chapter. See the length sef and it's only an introduction 🤣💔.
I just hope you enjoy this chapter because it's just an intro. and it might not be all that interesting. But don't worry, in the next two updates, y'all will just be "awwwning" upandan 😌.

(Dawn Damipe Dayo)
I growled out in utter frustration and plopped down on my bed, tightening the towel around my body for the umpteenth time.
"How many times will I have to go through my wardrobe before I find a nice cloth to wear for this date?" I complained, looking at the heaps and litters of cloths on the bed, the sofa, the vanity stool, and the floor.
"I only have one and a half hours to get ready. Chima would be here any minute." I grumbled again, looking up at Dunni, who stood in the middle of my mess, hands akimbo. She also looked frustrated, but not nearly as frustrated as I was.
I was the one going on a date in about an hour and I'm still clad in a towel, my hair divided into parts and packed in Flexi rods, completely clueless as to what I'd wear. Of course, I'd be frustrated.
Chima texted me all the details of the date immediately after I got home on Wednesday. Actually, he only texted me the day and the time he'd come to pick me up, but he said nothing about the venue or where he was taking me to, telling me that it was a surprise. I wasn't even bothered about it because I trusted him. I really trusted him.
The issue with the venue, however, was that I had no idea where we were going so I wasn't sure how to dress. And when I told him about it, Chima simply said "dress comfortably".
I have absolutely no idea what that meant.
It's a date! My first date! What did "dress comfortably" mean?
What exactly am I even supposed to do on a first date?
"Dunni, please na." I pleaded and she looked at me. "I brought you here to help me pick an outfit but you are just standing there, looking at me like something I don't know." I pouted.
"I should pick an outfit for you?" She asked incredulously like I had asked for the most absurd thing ever. "If I pick an outfit for you, you might end up going on this date looking like a masquerade. You have more fashion sense than I do, shey you don't know ni."
"If I slap you!" I thundered and she burst into laughter like I was cracking the biggest joke of the year.
Dunni was enjoying this, because I don't understand how someone that's wearing a two-piece bodysuit, a grey short sleeve low-neck top that was held together with a knot in front, and marching grey boat cut pants will say she has no fashion sense.
Dunni was too proud. She just wants someone to hype her, but she won't get it from me. Lai Lai.
I called her to help me with my outfit for my date. A date I have been anticipating since the very moment I was asked out by the guy I like. Up until two hours ago, I've been super hyped for the date... even more hyped to see Chima again. But now, I wasn't even sure what I was feeling.
So much nervousness.
I sighed again in frustration, remembering my plight.
"Maybe I should just call Chima to cancel..." I mumbled, more to myself than to Dunni. Then, I reached out to grab my phone from where it was sitting close to my pillow.
"Cancel kini?" Dunni shrieked, walking up to me in big steps that shocked me, but not as much as it shocked me when she aggressively knocked my phone off my hand and onto the floor face down.
"Dunni, what is it naw!" I screamed back, picking my phone from the floor quickly to check if the screen had cracked. Thank God for the heap of clothes on the floor, my phone would have probably cracked. I looked up and glared at Dunni.
"It's God that saved you that the screen didn't crack," I told her but she ignored what I said and kept talking.
"You are not canceling your date, Dawn. And that's on period," She added emphasis to an invisible t behind the word period. I sighed again, my shoulders slumped.
My cousin kept talking.
"How can you even say you want to cancel? And at the last minute? It's your first date! Besides, it's not going to be fair on Sochima who probably has an entire magical evening planned for you." She rapped out in one breath.
"You have to go." She added, after a moment of silence.
"What if I don't do things right?" I blurted out before I could stop myself. Dunni looked at me, hands akimbo. Then she sighed and came to settle down beside me on the bed. I looked away from her, staring down at the phone in my hands.
"You are not talking about just the date anymore." She stated matter-of-factly. I didn't have to answer her before she knew that she was right.
I wasn't talking about just the date anymore. I was talking about my entire relationship with Chima. This date was like the pivot to everything that would happen between us after and I had no experience in what I was doing.
What I feel for Chima is the most real thing I've ever felt... ever. I didn't want to ruin something that had barely even started.
"I can feel your mind is working in overdrive right now," Dunni began, her voice bringing me out of my reverie and I looked at her. "And whatever you are overthinking, you need to stop overthinking it." She flashed me an understanding smile.
I sighed again.
"It's is my first date, Dunni," I told my cousin, who nodded in understanding, urging me to go on. "I don't want anything to ruin it. I just want today to be perfect..." I trailed off just as Dunni started shaking her head.
"There is no such thing as the perfect date... or the perfect first date," Dunni said, making me keep quiet so I could listen to her. "My first date with David was nowhere close to perfect," She added, laughing in her voice as a forlorn look appeared on her face.
She was talking about the same David she didn't want to talk about the last time she came here.
I sat up.
"I thought you didn't want to talk about him," I said, causing her smile to falter a bit as she looked at me. Then she shrugged, her contagious smile back on, and shook her head
"I'm not talking about him," She quickly countered and I smirked, looking at her knowingly. "I'm citing our first date as an example that first dates aren't close to perfect." She clarified and I nodded, allowing her to have her moment.
So, I listened to her.
"We went to Greenland Park at Amber Estate and I completely embarrassed myself on the long canopy walk." She laughed again and I listened to her with rapt attention, wanting to hear everything she had to tell me.
"I don't even understand why I listened to Dave when he asked us to go on that death trap! We were in the middle when all of a sudden everyone started dancing and shaking the thing." I saw her slightly shudder at the memory. "I just broke down and started crying right there and then."
I burst into laughter.
"You cried?" I asked incredulously between laughter. She turned to me, a mock scowl on her face.
"It was scary!" She exclaimed, being all defensive. "Have you ever been on the canopy walk before?" She asked and I shook my head. "Exactly! You won't understand how it felt. It took a lot for me to be able to get down in one piece. I was so terrified. Thankfully, Dave was so patient with me,"
I kept quiet, noticing the way she had subtly talked about David, her ex even after she said she wasn't talking about him. I didn't point her attention to it, I just watched her. She wasn't over him yet, it was so obvious and there was nothing she could do or say that would convince me otherwise.
Then why did she break up with him?
She didn't tell me.
"You and Dave seem to have had fun." I carefully stated a suggestive undertone to my voice. Dunni picked it, looking at me in a funny way before she shook her head.
"That's beside the point." She quickly changed the topic back and became serious. "Why I told you that story is just to let you know that the success or failure of a first date doesn't determine the success of your relationship." She stated matter-of-factly
"It's not that deep, Dawn. But I understand your fear." She continued. "What happened last year with you and that other boy, though it might not be taking that much of a toll on you again, but it's still sipping a little bit of fear in your heart." She said.
She was talking about TK.
My relationship with Tekena Tamuno was the exact definition of a complete disaster. He was a terrible boyfriend, the worst of the worst... terrible and worst doesn't even cut it. That's how bad he was to me.
But somewhere deep down, there was this feeling that has been there for a while. The feeling that I might have been a part of the problem too. And no matter how much I try to get rid of such negative feelings, it was still there. It was small, tiny... but it was there.
Maybe that was the reason I still stayed in such an awful relationship...till it escalated the way it did.
"Dawn," Dunni called me back to reality and I looked at her. "Stop blaming yourself for what happened between the both of you. You were never the problem, he was. Don't, for one second, think that you did something wrong because you didn't-
-It's not your fault he never took you out on one date or showered you with the love and affection that you deserve. It's not your fault that he was a user and a coward. And it's certainly not your fault that he was a complete d*ck-
He is missing out on an amazing, beautiful woman like you because he's a shallow person that only thinks with the thing between his legs, and that is not your fault. Don't ever blame yourself for his screw-ups. Alright?"
I nodded, taking in a deep breath and exhaling. And as I exhaled, it felt like all that negative feeling went out with it. I suddenly felt lighter, freer.
"And yeah, Dave and I had fun." She deviated back to her first date talk. "Just because it wasn't like the stereotypical perfect date doesn't mean we didn't have fun-
And that's what you are going to do today, Cousin. You are going to have the time of your life with the guy you like... who adores you with everything in him. I honestly think he's even in love with you." Dunni deadpanned and my eyes went huge.
Chima? In love with me? Nah!
But truth be told, just the mere thought of Chima being in love with me was nerve-wracking. My heart was beating at an unimaginable speed. But I didn't want to think too much about it. I didn't want to get my hopes up.
"What makes you think he is in love with me, Dunni?" I asked instead, trying not to act fazed at all by what she had said.
"I read all your chats," She said, shrugging nonchalantly like she didn't just indirectly say she had invaded my privacy.
"That guy knows just what to say to make a girl swoon. It felt as if he was chatting with me when I was reading your messages, see me smiling like a fool." She laughed. "He's completely smitten and lovestruck by you, it's as clear as day." She rapped on, a swooning smile on her lips while I watched her as though she had just descended from the moon.
When did she have the time to read my chats that I didn't notice?
"When did you even have the time to go through my chats?" I had to ask, voicing out my thoughts. "And how did you get my pattern?" I added.
"What are you trying to hide on your phone? Do you have nudes?" She asked me, her eyebrows raised in tease. "And a Z pattern? Seriously? You are not even security conscious. Any fool can unlock your phone." She stated.
"And here I was, thinking you already have sense because of your motivational speech," I mumbled, but she heard me and gave me a deadly abara at my back. I screamed, jumping off the bed.
"Dunni naw!" I whined, rubbing the spot on my back that she had hit me.
"You are too rude!" She retorted.
"Oya sorry." I went to hug her. "I'm very thankful. Thank you for making me feel better."
"I meant every word I said," She said as I pulled away from her. "It's time for you to be happy, and this boy Sochima makes you so happy. You cannot mention his name without smiling or having this beautiful glow and aura around you," She paused when an involuntary smile tugged at the corners of my lips, proving her point
"You see?" Dunni drawled, wiggling her eyes teasingly and I giggled. "I have never seen you so excited while talking about someone like when you talk about this boy. I have never seen any guy make you this happy. Not that d*ick head, Tekena. Not even your best friend, Kizito. This boy is special and I feel it in my guts that he is the one." Dunni concluded, and when she did, I was grinning from ear to ear like I was high on some drug.
It felt so nice that I wasn't the only one that could see the way Chima made me feel or the genuinity behind everything that was going on between us. Everyone was so supportive, unlike when I was with Tekena. I knew I was doing something right.
All of these feel right.
"I still don't have what to wear," I whined, looking around my still scattered room. Dunni's lips stretched in a wide grin as she jumped up to her feet with so much energy.
"Now, I'm feeling truly inspired," She sighed out, taking a deep breath. "I'll find you a kick-ass comfortable outfit to wear."
And just as she said that the door of my room flew open and I screamed, startled.
"Jesus Christ, Dean!" I snapped when my younger brother's tall frame came into view. "I've warned you not to barge into my room like that!" I chided.
"Senior Sochima is in our house! The Captain of Crestview basketball team is in my house!" He screamed back, totally ignoring what I had said.
While Dean was excited out of his mind, I, on the other hand, had my eyes widened at what he had said, completely mortified.
I looked at Dunni whose expression mirrored mine.
"He is here already?" Dunni asked while I turned my head sharply to check the time.
5:45 pm was what the digital clock on the wall read. It was fifteen minutes to the time of our date. And I haven't dressed up yet!
"Punctual," I heard Dunni muse to herself, an impressed undertone in her voice. "I like this boy already." She added while I turned to Dean who was grinning from ear to ear.
"Dean, please tell him I'd be right with him in a second. Keep him busy, entertained, or whatever. Just stall him for me please." I pleaded with him.
"Done!" He answered without hesitation, then began to rap. "It's not every day the captain of the Crestview basketball team comes to your house. He must play Xbox with me sha, that's what I know. I will also be able to boast to my friends that Sochima Johnson is dating my sister! See mad levels..." He continued blabbing.
"Dean, you talk too much!" I thundered impatiently, slightly startling him and shutting up his rants. "Go and do what I asked abeg."
"Yes ma'am," And with that, he raced out of my room, shutting the door behind him in a loud bang. I sighed, turning to Dunni who was already looking at me.
"We have less than fifteen minutes and I don't even have anything to wear. Help me!"
"Don't worry, I gat you." She answered immediately, raising three pieces of clothing in her hand. I began to wonder what time she had to find the clothes. I was even more amazed at her speed. I stood up and checked out the clothes she had picked.
A Mom jeans. Okay, not so bad. I can rock a mom jeans. And a Kimono... a multi-colored long-sleeved kimono. Wasn't sure the last time I wore it but I was digging them right now.
But what do I wear underneath?
I looked at the last piece of clothing in Dunni's hand and my brows furrowed in confusion. I looked back at Dunni to ask if she was joking but then, she was grinning back at me, a way of telling me that she was actually very serious.
"A tube top? Really, Dunni?" I had to ask, hands akimbo.
"A white tube top." She expatiated. The way she had said it as if telling me the color of the tube top would make it make sense why I should wear a freaking tube top under a kimono.
"You want me to wear a tube top under the kimono," I repeated, trying to make sure I was getting her correctly.
"Well, dhuur," Dunni answered, obviously not getting the picture.
"With these boobs?" I gestured to my chest, my eyes widened in shock and my cousin sighed.
I can't believe Dunni was telling me to wear a tube top under the kimono. She knew how slightly insecure I was about my body type. I had the figure and the curves, sure. People say I should be proud of it, and in as much as I was, it was both a blessing and a curse. I loved my body, yes... but I hated the kind of attention that came with it, especially from guys.
The last thing I wanted was for it to be all Chima would see tonight.
"There is nothing wrong in wearing a tube top, Dawn," Dunni told me, trying to convince me. I shook my head, unconvinced.
"I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it. I just don't want to do too much tonight." I explained and she looked on as if she knew I was going to say more. "I don't want it to seem as if I'm... seducing Chima," I muttered the last part more to myself than to Dunni, playing with my fingers nervously.
But she heard me anyway.
"Seducing Chima?" She repeated, sounding incredulous. Then she chuckled, sounding amused "Dawn, you are overthinking again. Chima is not TK and that's a fact. He didn't fall in love with you because of your curves, given that you wear a rather baggy school uniform..."
"He is not in love with me," I cut her off, chuckling involuntarily.
"My point is," Dunni continued anyway, ignoring me. "He loves you for you. If he finds you sexy, then that's a plus but your body is not the basis of his feelings for you and that's on periodt." She added and I exhaled.
"Be more confident in your body, Dawn." She concluded, giving me a reassuring smile that seemed to seal my patched confidence up. I took a deep breath and nodded.
Dunni finally convinced me to wear the tube top beneath the kimono, so I allowed her to dress me up. After wearing the mom jeans, I wore one of my armless bra under the tube top. When I saw how it looked on me, I got a bit more confident because the top wasn't even revealing. It was like wearing a crop top, only armless and fitted.
I wore the Kimono over it and sat down so that Dunni would style my hair. I looked at the time and saw that it was already 6:00 pm on the dot and I didn't want to keep Chima past 6:05 pm. Dunni saw my agitation and sight impatience so she hurried it up and soon I was done.
"See!" Dunni squeaked, grinning widely at her masterpiece. Then she started hyping me "You are slaying! Chai, see my cousin! The hottest of the hottest! Sexy mama! If Chima doesn't go speechless when he sees you, then he doesn't have eyes for good thing." Dunni continued to hype and I couldn't help but laugh.
Staring back at the mirror, I smiled at my reflection. Yup, Dunni was totally right. I was slaying.
The Chiffon multicolored kimono fell against my body like water, the long ends flowing behind me when a whiff of breeze blew from my window. It was transparent so the white tup top could be easily seen through it. The mom jean was supposed to be baggy, but it hugged my body quite well, but not provocatively.
Dunni had styled my hair into a slick lower bun, leaving a fringe in front that fell over my forehead daintily. Dunni had also made me wear white kicks, complementing the tube top I had inside.
(Dawn is so beautiful😩❤️✨. Just imagine the shirt she's wearing as the kimono and the joggers as mom jeans. I didn't get the exact image I needed, but this one is close sha 🤣)
I wasn't conscious anymore, I loved the way I looked.
"Look at her smiling at her reflection," Dunni teased me and I giggled, feeling confident in myself. "Oya, let's go and meet your date. You will have to introduce me." She said.
I packed everything I needed into a cross bag. Dunni asked me to take my bus pass just in case Chima won't be able to bring me home. I also packed my phone, extra money and... well, that's all.
When she saw I was done, Dunni looped her hand with mine and led me out of my room and to the stairs that led to the living room. We got to the head of the stairs and I looked down to see Chima sitting right there with Dean. Dean had succeeded in stalling him, keeping him roped in Xbox.
I chuckled, watching them... watching Dean scream profanities as he aggressively pressed the buttons of the controller, obviously losing to Chima, who was sitting so relaxed on the sofa, using the controller not nearly as aggressive as Dean was.
Did winning come so easily to him? I couldn't help but ask myself with a smile.
The boys had not even noticed us yet.
"Dean, stop being so aggressive or you'll break the controller.* Dunni was the one who spoke first, calling their attention to us.
My eyes stayed on Chima because I wanted to see every reaction and expression on his face... every emotion that appears in his eyes. So, when his head turned in my direction... when his eyes met mine, I saw it all.
All of it.
And it shook me to my core how much just one look from him was able to make me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world.
His mouth fell open slightly, his eyes trained heavily on me... just on me. He dropped the controller on the stool beside him, his eyes not leaving mine for even one nanosecond. I kept my eyes on him as well, watching him steadily. He stood up slowly, his lips mouthing a particular word I could easily decipher.
Wow... that was what he said.
I suddenly felt a fresh burst of confidence flow through me, just by the way he was looking at me. My lips stretched further and wider in a grin as I took my sweet time to descend the stairs , leaving Dunni alone completely. I kept walking, step after step, to Chima who looked transfixed, unable to keep his eyes off me.
Oh, the way he looks at me. I sighed.
"Wow,"
I heard him say when I got closer to him, his voice coming out in a husky whisper that sent chills running up and down my body. I almost shuddered, not in fear... definitely not in fear. Out of nowhere, I suddenly began to wonder what it'd be like to have him whisper to me like that, his lips close to my ear, brushing my skin ever so slightly.
Goosebumps sprouted on my skin just by the mere thought.
Daughter of Zion in the mud. My subconscious mocked me.
"He is speechless!" Dunni's squeal pierced through my thoughts, while Dean began to make a mock gagging sounding like he was repulsed by the scenery.
I laughed heartily, but didn't take my eyes off Chima... and he didn't take his eyes off me.
"Hi," I whispered when my laughter subsided, smiles tugged at the corners of my lips.
"Hi," He replied in the same tone, then breathed out short but soft laughter, that alluring aura radiating around him in waves.
I watched his eyes scan my frame, slowly... like he wanted to memorize the image of me, of how I looked. His lips were still ajar, expressions of awe, admiration, even wonder flashing across his face over and over again as he took me in... as he took all of me in.
"You look..." He began when his eyes met mine again, "You look... Wow," He was very speechless, and I couldn't help the giggle that sipped from my lips. I've never felt so giddy, it seemed like I was high on something.
Plus, it amazed me how much effect I had on him.
I allowed my eyes to roam his tall frame, and when I saw what he was wearing, I gasped... inaudibly but I gasped.
We were matching.
Jesus.
(Mr. Ansel looking frosh😩🥵🔥)
Chima was wearing a multicolored vintage shirt over a white inner vest, ripped jeans, and kicks. We were literally wearing the same thing, and the fact that it was all a coincidence blew my mind. On a normal day, it would have been so cringe. But this wasn't a normal day... and I didn't mind at all.
I couldn't stop the smile that stretched across my lips.
"We are matching," I stated, bringing his attention to it. Chima looked at my outfit again, then at his. His eyes widened in realization.
"Oh my God, we are matching." He repeated and I laughed at the excitement I could hear in his voice. He didn't mind that we were matching, and I didn't mind either. I liked it. I really liked it.
"You look Beautiful, Dawn. So Beautiful" He whispered and I sighed, his words flowing right through me and settling right in my heart. His eyes, his face, his entire being held pure and undiluted adoration... just for me.
Sochima Ansel Johnson was making me fall for him faster than I intended.
"We are still standing here o," Dunni's voice pierced through our little bubble, reminding us that she and Dean were still there, standing and watching us. I rolled my eyes, but smile, turning around to face them with Chima.
"Is that your mum?" Chima whispered to me, and I needed no other person to tell me that he was asking about Dunni. "Wow, she looks so young and pretty," He added.
I nearly face-palmed, wishing he had not said that. Because Dunni heard him, and now she was making this close-mouthed whistle-like shriek from her lips. Calling my cousin pretty, beautiful... or generally complimenting her goddess-like glamour was like worshiping her. And Dunni didn't take something like that lightly.
Unlike normal human beings that would just smile and say thank you for the compliment, my dear cousin will carry it on her head like a crown.
"He called me pretty," She breathed out then sighed, looking like someone in a complete daze as she stared at Chima like a lovesick puppy. Chima was rather confused, probably wondering why she was acting like that.
"You made a mistake calling her pretty to her face," Dean told Chima while I tried to calm Dunni down.
On God, my cousin was high.
"Yes Dunni, he called you pretty. Just smile and say thank you." I told her.
"Dawn, if you don't marry this boy, I definitely will. You know I'm now single and ready to mingle." And as she said that, she flashed Chima a wink. I looked at Dunni, my eyes widened in shock. She legit just winked at the guy I was going on a date with.
The hell?
Dean started laughing, clearly finding the entire scenery funny while Chima looked amused, the corners of his lips tugged in a lopsided grin.
"This is why I'm the only normal person in this house," I muttered to myself before looking at Chima.
"She's not my mum." I clarified, and he made a sound of realization. "She's my cousin, Dunni," I told him. Chima greeted her properly this time, being the charming person that he was. Being this way with people seemed to come naturally for him.
No wonder he was so loved in school.
But my cousin was very extra about it, shamelessly fawning over a high schooler that she was nothing less than two years older than. She shook his hand and held unto it, and it took the grace of God for me to get his hands out of hers. All the while, Chima and Dean were just laughing.
"We'd be going now," I announced, holding Chima's hand to lead him outside. Dean had to hold onto Dunni's waist because she tended to jump at Chima.
Is that how Konji used to do people?
"Your cousin is something else," Chima commented as we walked out of the gate, chuckling at the memory of what had happened inside. I laughed lightly, shaking my head.
"She isn't normal," I told him and he laughed with me. We stopped in front of the gate as we talked. "If I want to be completely honest with you, I am the only normal person in this house. If it was a full house today, with my parents and the twins, you'd have seen full-blown madness."
He laughed again.
"After saying that, I kinda want to meet your entire family now." He said and I laughed too, trying to mask the feeling the interpretation of his words gave me. He wanted to meet my entire family. No guy or teenage guy rather could easily say that.
Or maybe he was just joking.
"I'm sorry, I didn't bring any car," Chima spoke. It was then I noticed that there wasn't any car outside. "My mum wouldn't release it because she feels I'm still too young to drive, so I took the bus here." He explained and I nodded in understanding.
"We can both use my bus pass, don't worry," He added, but I shook my head.
"That won't be necessary," I said retrieving my own bus pass from my purse with a big smile playing on my lips. He looked surprised when I raised it for him to see, an amused smile playing on his lips.
"I have mine," I told him. He chuckled, looking rather impressed. I chuckled too, "Don't look so shocked, I take the bus too." I teased and he laughed.
I understood why he was shocked and impressed that I had a bus pass. It's not every day you see stereotypical ajebo kids having a bus pass. I can bet my allowance for the rest of my life that eighty-five percent of Crestview students have never taken the bus in their life.
"Come on, let's go wait at the stop"
He whispered, stretching his hand to me so I can take it. I smiled and took his hand in mine, sighing at how well our hand fit so perfectly. It wasn't just about the way he held me, but how he would swiftly wheeze his fingers in between mine, a gesture that was so simple, yet so intimate. And the way his thumb would unconsciously rub soothing circles to the back of my palm.
I wanted him to keep holding my hand like this.
"So," I drawled as we walked down the road to where the estate bus stop was. He looked at me, silently urging me to go on. "Are you going to tell me where you are taking me?" I asked.
Chima's lips stretched in a grin, his eyes twinkling with excitement.
"Ever been to Wonder Coast?"
