Chapter 7: Something to fight for
Hey Diary. Everyone is busy today and I'm just chilling at home alone so I figured I would finish telling you my story. We just left off with me and Sarah falling asleep...
I woke up around 8:30pm with Sarah still asleep on top of me. I lightly tap her shoulder to wake her up. She rubs her eyes and looks at me. "Hi Alena." She says. "Hello Sarah. Did you sleep well?" She nods and hops down.
We walk upstairs to see where everyone else is. Kate, Martha, Elie, James, George, Jack, Steven, and Ben are all gathered in one of the guest rooms. Everyone else is asleep. "Hey guys." I say as I walk into the room. They all turn and look at me with half smiles. I know that when they look at me they feel sad because they think that after tonight they won't see me again.
"We've been trying to think of a way to stop the witch, but we still have nothing." Jack says. I nod understanding, "The best idea we've come up with is putting this bulletproof vest on you that I got from work." George says handing me the vest. "I have other gear if you'd like to try, but it's not one hundred percent witch proof if you know what I mean." He adds.
I again nod and take the stuff to my guest room to suit up. Sarah helps me put it all on. Then we walk back to the other room. The boys are down stairs double checking all door locks and looking in all the rooms to make sure she isn't already here.
This is how it goes all night. We sit in the room trying to come up with ideas to save me while every few minutes the boys go down stairs and check everything making sure that there is no way for me to be harmed. I look at the clock and it reads 10:58pm. My death normally happens sometime between eleven and twelve. I am about to tell the girls that when I black out. I have another vision.
"Your time is up Riley. Tonight I take you away from your current life and give you a new one!" Vena says. "MOM!" I scream. Vena tries to cover my mouth, but it is too late, my parents are already running up the stairs. The door swings open revealing them both. "Mom, Dad, help me!" I scream. I watch as they fight with Vena. I am tied to my bed post and trying to get out. My right hand slowly slips out making it easier to untie my left. Then I start on my feet, it takes me some time, but my parents are stalling for me.
"STOP!" I yell at the top of my lungs once I'm untied. "Vena why are you doing this? You have a daughter; you must understand how this hurts them. Please, just stop." I plead. "Why? Why am I doing this? Your right I do have a daughter, a daughter who is fatherless because your mother killed him!" She is in tears and so am I. "Mom. I-is that true?" I ask not believing it. "Did you really kill her husband?" "...Yes, but it was an accident! The space car we were in went out of control and we ran into that station on accident. I never meant to hurt him, he was my best friend!" She says. I let out a deep breath that I was apparently holding and smile to reassure her that I don't think it's her fault.
Vena takes this as her moment of opportunity. She approaches with a knife. "You took someone that I care about, now I shall take someone that you care about!" And with that Vena stabs me straight through my heart. My parents are in total shock and tears. I lay there looking at them while I bleed out. The last thing I see is Vena running out the door leaving me to die.
I open my eyes and I am back in the guest room. Only five minutes have passed and everyone is staring at me. "Alena! You're okay!" They all scream. "Sorry I just had another vision is all." I apologize. "No, no it's fine we just thought you died." Ben says.
BANG!
We all turn our heads to the door. "What was that?" Elie asks although we all know exactly what it is. "I'll go check." Ben says. "Wait, Ben don't go she could hurt you." I say worried. "I'm willing to sacrifice getting hurt if it means you'll be safe." He kisses my forehead and leaves. George and James following right behind.
I start to shake. If he dies it will be my fault and I promise I will never fall in love ever again. I get up and am about to walk out, but of course it isn't that easy. "You can't go down there you won't survive!" Martha yells. "I have to try!" I yell back. "I think I can really beat her this time." "Really?! What's different from now and fifteen years ago?! She's killed you many times already, what's to say she won't again?!" Martha screams in fear with tears running down her face. "This time I have more to fight for!" With that I walk out of the room and down stairs.
I peek around the corner and see Ben laying out on the floor. My first instinct is to run to him and make sure he is okay, but I can't. I can't because she is down there fighting George and James in the living room and she will see me. Unfortunately I can't think of anything else to do.
"Alena." I turn to see who whispered my name. When I see Sarah I gasp. "Sarah you can't be here you have to go." I say worried someone might hear me and by someone I mean Vena. "But I want to help you." She says. I frown, I can't let her help me obviously because she'll die, but I don't know what I can say that will make her leave. I look her straight in the eyes and say, "Sarah, I need you to do me a big favor. I need you to stay right here and watch me. I'm going to go out there and save your dad and brother and George, but I need you to stay here and watch me. You watching me is help enough." She nods, I take a deep breath and step out. I go straight for Ben, thankfully he is still alive. I bring him back to the stairs with Sarah and then head out again. This time looking for a fight.
"VENA!" I yell. I can hear footsteps running down the stairs when I say this, but I pay them no attention. "LEAVE THEM ALONE!" I yell again. "I see you finally remembered my name Riley." Vena says. "Vena I know that you still haven't healed over the death your husband, but you've got to let it go. This has gone on long enough, please just stop this! You don't have to be the bad guy."
As I say this I look behind her. George is trying to find the best vantage point to shoot her. So I kept stalling her while he and James come up with a plan. "You can still undue this curse, please, stop this now before you get hurt." I say. "Me? Get hurt? Oh dear, please, no one can hurt me! Especially not you, you're week and young. What makes you think you can stop this?"
I turn my head and look back at Sarah, she's still sitting there with Ben. Then I look to Martha, Kate, Elie, Jack, and Steven on the stairs. I see that the other kids have awakened and I see them all looking at me. I smile to myself then turn back to Vena. "Vena I'm at an advantage here." I say "How are you at an advantage?" She asks. "I have something to fight for, I have friends, family, and love. What do you have?" I don't know how she will respond to that. "I have power." Vena says with a sly smile on her face.
"The first night I killed you, do you remember it well?" She asks and I nod. "You should have been at an advantage there too, but guess what? You weren't because I'm too powerful and no one can stop me!" "Please Vena, you still have a chance to make things right so please, don't kill me this time." I say pleading and hoping that she won't kill me. "It's too late I've already made my decision. You will die, tonight!" She jumps towards me yelling "I will kill you! I will kill you! I will kill y-" BOOM!
With that Vena falls to the ground dead. I look up and see George is the one who fired the trigger. I run over to Ben who is now fine and give him a big hug and a long overdue kiss. It's over, it's finally over!
BOOOOONG! The clock strikes twelve and the curse is lifted! I'm finally fifteen! Vena will never ruin my life again. "Guys its midnight! I'm fifteen! We did it!" I yell with excitement. We all gather in a big hug and they begin to sing the Happy Birthday song. "Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Alena. Happy birthday to you!"
I am smiling ear to ear, I can finally have a normal life all thanks to these people right here. I look around at all their smiling faces and I know that I couldn't have just done that without them. Without them I would have died tonight, I never would be able to see my family again. I owe my life to these people, my friends, my family.
"What do we do with the body?" Ben asks after the song ends. This is a good question and I hadn't thought about it. I turn to George for an answer. "I'll call it in, say it was an intruder." George says. We all nod, leave it to George to always have the solution. He turns to go make his phone call, but something stops him. "Guys, one question." He says, "Yeah?" Kate asks. "Where's the body?" We all turn around and sure enough there is no body to be found. We all franticly start searching everywhere, finding nothing. "I think I found something." Ben says and he hands me a piece of paper that reads this:
Dear Alena and friends,
Clearly you need to study mine and Alena's species a little more. I am an Algarian Witch, and just like Alena I can regenerate. The only difference between me and her is she regenerates into a new living thing. I on the other hand regenerate like all normal Algarians. I regenerate where I die and with my memories still intact. I just wake up with a new face is all.
Now beware because I am not done with you Alena. I will kill you if it's the last thing I do! Enjoy being fifteen because you'll never reach sixteen!
Sincerely,
Vena Star
"NO! Please not again!" I cry as I read it. I pass the note on, everyone shrieking when they read it. I almost got my life back, almost. I guess some things are just too good to be true.
Thanks to my friends I defeated Vena for the time being and had a chance to live my life a little more. They all helped me come up with a cover story the day after my birthday. Ben took me out to clear my head and let me enjoy being fifteen. My family was so happy to see me again. Speaking of which I should probably end this here Diary, mom and dad just got home and it's family game night! Thanks for listening to my story!
Love,
Alena
