iii. the mystery of the chocolate frogs
CHAPTER 3,
the mystery of the chocolate frogs.
. . .
Small dots of light begun to break through to his darkened sight. He felt limp, leaning against one of the most uncomfortable chairs he had ever sat on. Slowly his eyes opened, regaining his consciousness as he gasped for air, coughing as he bent over, clutching at his aching stomach, feeling like he was about to puke his lungs out.
He looked around. Where was he?
Then he begun to remember, exactly were he was. He was still in the annoyingly white interrogation room, in front of him, the woman who had taken his consciousness, watching his as she sipped on whatever was in her mug.
"Are you ready to talk now?" She asked, removing the cup from her lips and placing it down onto the table.
"What did you do to me?" Regulus asked, his voice hoarse and cracked, ignoring her questions as he hugged his hurting stomach.
"I ask the questions around here." She stated, taking another sip of her drink.
Regulus looked her in the eye as their staring contest had officially begun without their knowledge. The staring felt like hours and it probably lasted less than a minute. The battle was intense but she gave in and blinked first so at least Reggie could now say he beat an auror at a staring contest once he got out from this place.
He was pulled back to reality again and he wanted to curse her so bad right now. Verbally and wand wise. He swallowed hard, biting his tongue from the inside to keep himself from bursting aggression at her. "You know what." He clicked his tongue. "I'll tell you."
"Great—"
"—but, when I do, I need to deliver a message to someone." He interrupted, sitting back up straight. "Will you?"
The auror thought for a second, "depends on what it is and to who."
Regulus nodded his head subtly, running his tongue against his teeth, "for what, I cannot tell you in this moment, but I can tell you for who." He said, darkness filling his voice.
"Who?" The aurora asked, a need to unravel a mystery in her.
"Her name is Ayame Sukō."
. . .
Davie Acton pushed her trolley in front of her, the wheels bouncing against the uneven ground as she made her way towards the steaming Hogwarts Express. She passed by many families, hugging their children goodbye before they stepped on the surface of the train and wondered why her mother never did the same to her.
Davie's eyes danced around her surroundings as she entered the familiar train, looking for a specific someone. She didn't see him. Maybe he was inside a compartment already. So she simply begun her search for her own compartment.
Davie settled for an empty compartment where it seemed most quiet. She sat and watched as the train begun to move, fumes of steam filling the station's length as she watched grown wizards and witches waving at their children before they disappeared from sight and the journey had officially begun. The girl leaned her head against the wall of the compartment and watched as the outside world appeared before her eyes.
The morning was a chilly one, wind waved through masses of trees, grey clouds covered the sky and the sun creeped out from them for bare moments of sunlight. It looked as if a storm was on its way to visit, yet it felt so calm.
There was a small rattle outside her compartment and Davie gave no mind. That was until she realised the disturbance was right outside her compartment. Her head turned to the glass door and she saw a black haired boy and the trolley lady. The boy was bent down, picking up all sorts of candy from the floor as the lady rushed him reminding him that she had a job to do. He stood up, letting the woman pass.
Davie plastered an immediate smile onto her face, her mood heightened from 50 to 100 just at the sight of her best friend. She stood up, pulling the compartment door open, "Reggie." She said and he turned around as if she scared him.
"Davie." He replied, his voice was shaky as if he wasn't expecting her to be standing there. In fact, he was acting strange.
"You wanna come in?" She offered and he didn't reply for a second until he did.
"No." Regulus stated yet he sounded so unsure of his own sentence.
Davies face fell for a split second, her little heart cracking slightly from a word so short and simple yet so hurtful. She covered the look of sadness on her face quickly with a smile that she hoped didn't give her emotions away.
"Oh. That's fine." She replied, beginning to shut the compartment door.
"It's not that I don't want to." He stopped her. She looked at him with a confused look on her face. "It's just that Ayame is waiting for me and—"
"It's fine." She cut in, not wanting to hear his voice and closing the compartment door completely before pulling the blind on it down all the way. It closed in front of Regulus' face and guilt filled his gut as his eyes were met with the barrier between Davie and him. He thought about knocking and telling her it was just a joke so that he could sit with his best friend for the rest of the ride, but instead he walked back to where he came from, hesitant at first but then deciding to ditch his group and look for another seat to sit at.
"Regulus!" A female voice called out from behind him. He sighed, spinning around only to see one of his friends, Ayame.
Ayame was a girl of soft yet fierce features. Her hair was dark and silky and it seemed to bounce with each step she took. There was no specific way to describe Ayame Sukō, she was like a 2 in 1 sale. The girl looked like a squishy marshmallow full of sweetness and sugar, yet inside she was a venomous snake ready to poison people of threat to her or loved ones.
"Hey." Regulus replied, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
"Where you going?" She questioned, a small smile on her face. Regulus opened his mouth to speak, but she stopped him before he could utter a single syllable. "Wait, let me guess. You were going to raid the trolley lady and take all her chocolate frogs!"
"Oh, c'mon! It was one time Aimee. Give it a rest or I'll start to think you're obsessed with me or something." Reggie responded, leaning against the wall in between two compartments, arms crossed.
"In your dreams, Black." She stated, earring a little laugh from him.
"My dreams are way too good for you to even appear in them, don't be so full of yourself." Regulus told her and she laughed.
"As if I'd even want to be in one of your perverse dreams." She taunted and he raised an eyebrow.
"I don't know what you mean." Regulus said, acting clueless to avoid more embarrassment.
Ayame snorted, "Don't act stupid, Regulus. Do you need me to remind me of the time Barty caught you—"
"OKAY I get it. That's enough. Just ... shoo away, Aimee." He said, leaning off the wall.
"Fine I'll leave you alone, your highness." She did a small bow before him and begun waking back to the compartment she had come from.
Reggie turned around and as he continued his search for a spare seat, he heard the black haired girl let out and imitation of a lewd sound.
"Oi!" Regulus called out as they both turned around. She looked at him expectantly and he looked around, searching for prying eyes before digging out a purple box from his the inside pocket in his cloak and tossing it into her grip perfectly. He winked at her before turning around and continuing his journey.
"I knew it!" She said, glancing at the chocolate frog packaging in her hand before walking off towards her compartment.
. . .
For the first time in what Regulus could remember, Davie Acton and himself sat separate from each other at the great hall as Dumbledore gave his life changing speech. He couldn't be near her. He wouldn't be near her. Oh, but Merlin, how he wanted to tell her all about his mostly uneventful summer. He wouldn't though. He would stay away and maybe this nightmare would go to hell.
Davie sat and spun the end of a fork against the table in little spins, like a ballerina on a stage. She was bored and Davie was rarely ever bored. Another year, same speech. Well, maybe the speech wasn't the same, but the moral stayed the same. Stay safe, study hard.
Regulus couldn't stop glancing over at Davie. What the hell was he thinking saying yes to that stupid monster's want. How could he.
Davie's fork fell flat to the table once the food magically appeared on the table in front of them. From chicken to pumpkin pies and orange juice, it all and more filled the long house tables.
Regulus tried to focus on his food with all the willpower inside him and now it was Davie's time to keep glancing back and forth between her food and him. Food. Regulus. Food. Regulus. Food. And again and again and again until it was time to go up to their dorm rooms.
And with that, sixth year had begun and ended at the same time.
