CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE
"Sometimes the world turns good people into bad people."
MARCEL came down the stairs into the courtyard with a bottle of bourbon in his hand. Diego saw him enter and approached him as Marcel walked over to sit down at a table.
"Hey, Marcel, maybe you know what's going on. Klaus ordered us to meet here, and now he's a no-show," Diego informed him, raising his hands up in the air a little.
"What do you want from me? It's a new regime. Get used to it," Marcel told him with a little to no emotion in his voice. Diego just looked at him sadly and shook his head.
Klaus entered the room with Thierry and began to make an announcment. He had one hand on Thierry's shoulder. "Dearest brethren, your attention, please." Every vampire that was there, turned to look at them. "No doubt, you're all surprised to see Thierry Vanchure, who's supposed to be rotting in the Garden for the crime of killing one of our own, and I personally decided to issue him with a pardon. I hope you'll all welcome home Thierry." He patted Thierry on the shoulder as Thierry put his hat on.
Thierry smiled and gave Diego a hug. "Welcome home, man."
Marcel turned to Klaus. "You're in a good mood," He commented as he saw Klaus' smile. "You should be with Spencer more often." He took a sip from his drink.
"Well, as much as I might like to, I have pressing responsibilities here," Klaus told Marcel then turned to address the crowd of vampires. "Now, as you all know, the witch Davina is no longer with us." He then pointed his finger around at the room of vampires. "Without Davina, we can no longer monitor the activity of our witch neighbors. However, since their Harvest failed, their magic will soon be gone forever. Until then, I say we keep them on their toes." He then pointed at Diego and dropped his hand, walking a few steps to where he was right in front of him. "Diego, I wonder if you might lead a rousting in the cauldron." Diego smiled and started to plan with the other vampires. Marcel grabbed his bottle and goes to storm away, but Klaus stopped him in the doorway. "Marcel, I'd hoped you would join Diego."
"Nah." Marcel then turned to look at Diego for a few seconds then turned back to Klaus. "I'm gonna take a personal day." He pushed past Klaus and left as Klaus looked down, saddened.
KLAUS entered one of the rooms of the compound and found Marcel, still drinking alone as he sat on a couch. Klaus sighed as he looked at Marcel.
"Ugh, is this what's it's come to?" Klaus questioned. "I bear the full weight of our kingdom while you pout like a child."
"You wanted to be king." Marcel looked down, already bored with the conversation. He then looked up at Klaus. "Besides, you look like you got it covered," He told him nonchalantly, shrugging.
"If the men see you shirk your duties, they're likely to do the same," Klaus pointed out, getting angry.
Marcel sat up straighter and glared at Klaus. "I told you, I am not in the mood for vampire hijinks," He told Klaus pointedly.
"No. You'd rather sit wallowing in sorrow for your lost little friend." He gestured to the glass of alcohol Marcel currently had in his hand.
Marcel stood up and pointed a finger at Klaus. "Don't push me right now." He was more than angry now.
"I am sorry Davina is gone, ok? I'm sorry," Klaus stated in an angry voice then calmed down a bit. "But this mournful attitude is unworthy of you, and it's boring to me," He told him honestly.
Diego entered the room to join them, looking worried. "Hey, guys, we got a problem."
THUNDER rumbled overhead as Diego lead Marcel and Klaus to the Cauldron to show them what he found. "We came to mess with the witches, just like you said. And these two, they went missing. Found them like this, not even staked. Just dead." They stopped as they came upon two vampires that were desiccated and were laying in a circle with some symbols in the middle of it.
"That's two more of my guys gone. Nice job, Captain." Marcel took one look at his dead men, put his hood up, turned around, and started to walk away.
"Where are you going?" Klaus asked him, but Marcel just ignored him and kept walking. "Someone has to account for this!" He yelled out to his friend which stopped him in his tracks. He turned around and looked at Klaus.
"You want revenge, get it yourself. That mark is tied to some bad mojo." He pointed to the mark that was on the foreheads' of the vamps that laid dead on the ground. "Any of y'all got any brains, you'll head back to the compound and stay the hell out of this." Marcel walked off.
Klaus turned to the vampires. "We're gonna find whoever did this, and I will show them what suffering is," He told them angrily.
ELIJAH walked into the room to find Hayley and I looking at Davina's old sketches. "There you two are." I looked up and smiled at him, rubbing my growing stomach.
"Here I am." Hayley glanced up through her thick eyelashes, but kept looking through the sketches.
Elijah gestured to the sketches. "Davina's drawings," He stated as if it wasn't obvious.
"Yeah. Morbid, I know. I was just thinking," Hayley looked up at Elijah with her hands on her knees. "WE never figured out why she drew those pictures of Celeste." She paused for a second. "Anyway, we're just killing time, now that we're on vampire lockdown." I nodded my head in agreement.
"Whoever did this, we will deal with them. It won't be long," Elijah told us, his eyes lingering on Hayley. She explained to me about her betraying Elijah, I was pissed at first since Elijah is like a brother to me, but got over it fast when Hayley started crying. I had to comfort her and tell her that it was going to be okay, much like I had to do with Klaus when he broke down.
"I'm not worried," She told him and shrugged. "Just think it's kind of funny that it took some big, supernatural threat for you to even come into the same room as me." She looked down sadly as I looked up at Elijah with expectant eyes.
"I do apologize if you feel neglected." He walked closer to her. "I have been occupied. My siblings are in some quarrel. Niklaus remains agitated." He lifted his right hand in the air and walked to where he was right in front of Hayley. "You'll recall that even our slightest interactions seem to infuriate him," He said that part mostly to me since Klaus thinks that Elijah will steal me away from him, which is stupid.
"So Klaus is a dick, and you want to be a good big brother. So we can't hang out. That sum it up?" Hayley asked him as she glanced up at him through her eyelashes. "I get it, Elijah. It just seems like a really crappy deal," She told him when she saw the look on his face.
HAYLEY, Elijah and I were in the courtyard as Elijah tried to call Rebekah. I was starting to worry because she was really the only other friend that I have other than Hayley.
"Rebekah is not answering her calls," Elijah told us, his brotherly worries coming over him.
"You worried about whoever killed those daywalkers still being out there?" Hayley asked him with crossed arms. I looked at Elijah with wide eyes.
"Frankly, I'm worried that she had something to do with this. She's very displeased with Niklaus, perhaps even conspiring. . ." He trailed off as he looked behind him at Thierry who was alone drinking at a table."With others." He turned his whole body towards where Thierry sat. "Thierry!" Elijah shouted, gaining the vampires attention. "Is it?" He asked as we walked over to Thierry.
"That's right," He told Elijah suspiciously, his eyebrows furrowed.
"My sister is rather fond of you," Elijah stated. "Strange, she's not typically drawn to unremarkable men," He commented, looking at Thierry. "Would you care to explain your sudden magnetism?" He asked, seriously.
"I don't know what you're--"
Elijah, annoyed, grabbed him by the throat and pushed him against the wall.
I smirked at the sight, loving it when Elijah got this way. It just showed that he had more than one side, more than one layer like most people think .
"You can either tell me what you know, or I can distribute tiny pieces of you throughout the Quarter," Elijah threatened him which made my smirk widen with satisfaction when I saw fear go through Thierry's eyes.
Thierry reluctantly spoke, his voice straining. "She asked me to keep an eye out on witch stuff. I found something, and when I showed her, we were jumped by some guy. He desiccated her with his touch," Thierry informed us through gasps of breathes.
Elijah got angry at those words and quite frankly, so did I. I pushed Elijah off of him and pinned Thierry back on the wall, my eyes flashing blue in anger. "Like a coward, you left her," I spat at him, a growl making it's way through my throat.
"What was I supposed to do, fight some warlock that took out an Original?" Thierry asked me, his face going slightly purple from not being able to breathe.
"Where was this, exactly?" Hayley asked worriedly, taking a step forward.
"The docks, warehouse fifty-seven. I was just doing what she asked. You cannot tell Klaus about this," He begged as he looked between the three of us.
I threw Thierry against the wall, knocking him unconscious.
"I shall take that into consideration," Elijah commented as he gave me an amused look. He then started to walk away.
"I'm coming with you," Both Hayley and I commented in sync.
"No," He told us as he turned around. "Stay here." He pointed at us."The compound is safe."
"Rebekah is in trouble. I'm going," I stubbornly told him, standing up straighter to prove a point.
"I'm with Spencer on this one." Hayley told him, standing by my side, crossing her arms, raising an eyebrow as she looked determinedly at him.
Elijah considered this, and sighed. "Do not leave my sight. The both of you. Understand?" Elijah asked us and we nodded, and the three of us left for the docks.
HAYLEY, Elijah and I arrived to where Rebekah's body was left.
"Rebekah!" Elijah yelled, we ran towards his sisters' body but we were stopped by an invisible force which reminded me of mountain ash, but what was around her was not mountain ash.
"Oh, what's happening?" Hayley asked worriedly as we looked down at Rebekah.
"Some kind of boundary spell. Someone is channeling her," Elijah told us, looking at the circle of what looked like salt. "Typically, it's a lethal process, but, because she's an Original, she can't die." He paused, catching his breathe from finding his sister in this state. "Instead, she's an endless source of power."
"So what are we supposed to do?" I asked angrily, I was so pissed that someone would do this, especially to an Original, someone who I care for.
Elijah swiveled around to face Hayley and I. "You both have to get her out of there," He told us seriously. I just gritted my teeth together in anger.
"You're not listening. We cannot enter the circle. There's some kind of confinement spell... If I can't remove her, we can't break the link," Elijah spoke to Sophie over the phone, as she was on speaker phone so that we could hear her without using our super hearing. He paced around and then stopped, putting his hand on his hip.
"It's a convoluted spell. It's like a witch's recipe. You can spoil the balance by adding a more potent ingredient. A mystical binding agent. I don't know, volcanic ash, rock salt...anything up to and including eye of newt," Sophie told us as she explained to us the situation that we were in.
"What about the blood of a witch?" Elijah then asked her.
Sophie's voice was then confused. "Do you have the blood of a witch?"
Elijah turned his phone off and then turned to me. "I need a favor."
I immediately understood. "The baby. She's a quarter witch." I gave Elijah my wrist, and he gingerly bit into it to draw blood. We walked towards the magic circle together.
Elijah held out my wrist and let the blood fall on the magic boundary line. It started to fizzle and deteriorate.
Elijah was finally able to get through, and he quickly picked up Rebekah and carried her out of the circle. He reached for my hand, and then he sped out with his vampire speed, Hayley was following us -- since she was a hybrid now, she was able to use her new found vampire speed.
KLAUS gave a speech to the crew of vampires in the compound. "Not long ago, you all united against me." He paused as he looked at the vampires. "You failed," He stated. "Since then, in my benevolence, I have wiped the slate clean, yet it seems clear you think that I am the one who needs to earn your respect, your loyalty. You're mistaken. It is you who must prove yourselves to me. Our community is under attack. I require soldiers. I need warriors, not cowards." He paused as he looked at them pointedly. "Each of you has a decision to make. You either fight alongside me or you leave now." He told them, gesturing to the door.
Thierry was the one to stand up and say something. "We don't owe you anything!" He yelled, gaining everyone's attention. "If staying in the Quarter means living under your rule, I'd just as soon get the hell out." He started to walk away.
Klaus watched as a handful of vampires joined Thierry and walk out of the compound. Thierry looked at Diego in hopes that he'll come along, but he gave him a pained look and stayed behind. As some vampires left, the ones that stayed took a few steps forwards as if to pledge their loyalty.
Afterwards, Marcel and Klaus talk with Sophie.
"I got to admit, I thought you'd lose a lot more guys than that," Marcel told Klaus honestly.
"Well, good riddance to them, I say," Klaus told Marcel with a smirk. "We've no room for slackers or cowards in our kingdom." They then took a drink of what looked like wine. "Now that you've regained your composure, let's move on to the next item of business, shall we." He turned around and faced Sophie. "With a little help from our dear friend Sophie." He then took a seat.
"I got no reason to help you, and I sure as hell don't have a reason to help him." She pointed at Klaus then Marcel.
"Now, now, don't be difficult, love. You'll only live as long as you're of use to me, and right now, your best use is to explain why a witch I killed has come back for revenge." He threw his hands up and then combined them.
"Come on. Resurrected witches with vast power?" Sophia questioned, giving them an exasperated look. "It's the Harvest," She commented. "To die and be reborn. I don't know how, but someone jacked that power, and they used it to bring back four witches, just not the right ones," She told them sadly, casting her eyes down to the floor.
"So there's still a chance?" Marcel asked hopefully, "If we can get that power back, we can save Davina." He looked between Sophie and Klaus, hope reflecting through his words.
"Let's concentrate on the immediate problem, shall we?" Klaus questioned. "Papa Tunde wants revenge. He'll continue to attack us, channeling power from the vampires he sacrifices. He kills," He threw one hand up. "He grows more dangerous." He threw the other hand up and then looked up at Sophie. "So how do I end him?" He asked her.
"He needs sacrifices to gain power," She told him. "You keep him from killing any more nightwalkers, that's a start," She sassed, rolling her eyes.
"Unless." He paused as Marcel and Sophie looked at him. "He finds the one place with a load of vampires ready to be sacrificed." They all look at each other with a look of dawning realization.
KLAUS and Marcel arrive at the garden only to discover that they are too late. All of the vampires are dead, sacrificed by Papa Tunde.
"I heard you went on a little trip with Elijah," A voice startled me out of my thoughts. I swiveled around and came face to face with Klaus.
"Uh, yeah," I stuttered then cleared my throat. "We went out to find Rebekah because she was almost sacrificed," I told him as I brushed through the knots that were in my hair. I had just got out of the shower a few moments ago.
"You could've gotten hurt," He stated as he looked at me to see if I had any injuries.
"Klaus," I told him and when he ignored me, I grabbed his hand with a small smile on my face. "I'm fine, Elijah made sure of that," I informed him.
He nodded and then saw my hair which must've been a big mess because he chuckled.
"Need help there, love?" He asked me, already taking the brush before I could even say anything. He stood behind me and started brushing my hair. "I've had enough experience from when Rebekah was young," He commented and I could smell sadness and fondness come from him.
When he was done, he sat my hair brush down and I turned around and smiled up at him since he was taller than I was.
"Thanks," I told him, looking up at him through my eyelashes.
"You should get some rest, love," He told me and then led me to the bed. I crawled into my bed and got under the cover.
As Klaus was about to walk away, I sat up, grabbed his hand, and pulled him into me, our lios colliding.
It took him a few moments to get over his shock, but once he did, he kissed me back feverishly, like he couldn't get enough of me.
Suddenly, he pulled back slightly. "Oh, how I missed this." I chuckled and pulled his lips back onto mine.
