CHAPTER THIRTEEN
"I'm made up of black coffee, untamed hair, and poorly suppressed anger."
I poured both Nik and I a glass of bourbon as we stood in front of Stefan and Caroline who was informing us that Silas might be in Mystic Falls.
"So some blood went missing from a few hospitals," Nik said nonchantly, not caring about what was being said. "What about Elena? Don't vampires with their humanity off tend to overindulge in human blood, or were you the exception?"
Stefan gave Nik a look. "It’s not Elena."
"Well, let's say for a moment that it was Silas," I spoke up, looking up at Stefan and Caroline over the rim of the glass of bourbon I had in my hand. "I'm struggling to see how this affects us," I gestured to both Nik and I with raised eyebrows. "I'm also struggling to see how everytime something terrible happens that you guys can't deal with, you come running to the people who you despise and keep wanting to kill."
"Look," Stefan grounded out. "Silas wants to die and be reunited with his one true love, but he's supernatural, so if he takes the cure and dies, he gets stuck on the other side."
Nik smirked. "How Shakespearian."
Stefan clenched his jaw. "But if he destroys the other side altogether, he can take the cure, die, and pass on, but in destroying it, every dead supernatural being will return to our side."
Caroline stepped forward. "That means every werewolf, every witch, every vampire " She glared at Nik. "I wonder how many of those you personally killed. Care yet?" She crossed her arms.
Nik glanced to me before setting down his glass of bourbon. "My interest is piqued. How do we stop him?"
Stefan seemed to relax. Bonnie said Silas needs to complete three massacres to do this spell. Before Professor Shane died, he convinced the pastor to blow up the council. Next, he had you kill your hybrids, and now he only needs one more massacre, so if he's here, that's what he's doing. We need to find him."
We stepped into Shane's office, our eyes darting around the room, trying to find anything out of place.
"What are we even looking for?" I questioned, my eyes roaming Shane's abandoned desk.
Stefan sighed. "Well, if Shane really was working with Silas, chances are he was helping him plan his next move."
Where, on his evil villain to-do list... steal blood, perform 3 massacres, pick up dry cleaning?" Caroline retorted, crossing her arms.
"Actually not to nit-pick," Nik started, smirking, "but we evil villains usually use minions to pick up our dry cleaning, that sort of thing." I chuckled and kissed Nik on the cheek who grinned down at me.
Caroline stared at us, dumbfounded before looking to Stefan. "Why are they necessary again?"
"Well, we don't know what Silas can do, so if we do have to go head to head with him, an original hybrid who can't die might come in handy, so will his very stubborn type B werewolf.
"My love will not be fighting against Silas," Nik grounded out, pulling me into him protectively.
I turned my head to stare at Nik. "Excuse you?" I pulled away and crossed my arms. "If he is a danger to you, I certainly will go head to head with him."
"Spenc--"
"Do not "Spencer" me, Nik," I narrowed my eyes at him.
Nik gave me a look, "we'll talk about this later." I gritted my teeth before nodding. Nik smiled in appreciation before looking to Caroline. "Besides, Stefan and I work well together, or at least we did in the twenties."
Stefan rolled his eyes. "Well, granted my emotions were off."
"And that's why you were more fun just as Damon is probably relishing in Elena's emotionless company in New York," Nik reminded Stefan, smirking with mishief.
Stefan tensed. "My brother knows what he's doing
"Does he?" Nik questioned, tilting his head much like a puppy would. "Don't underestimate the allure of darkness, Stefan. Even the purest hearts are drawn to it." He glanced over at me, smiling and I smiled back. "Still, I'm sure it will all be fine."
"I think I found something." We looked over at Caroline who read something off of a piece of paper. ""Symbolic figures in the dark arts." Didn't Bonnie talk about expression triangles? Here."
I grabbed it from her and read off of it, "In some schools of magic such as expression, human sacrifice can be used as a focus for power. It's rumored that the addition of two supernatural sacrifices compounds the mystical energy, creating an expression triangle"."
"Humans... that was the council fire. Demons..." Caroline looked to Nik. "Klaus' hybrid failure."
I growled and stepped forward. "I would watch what you say, blondie," I warned. "What’s the third?"
Caroline gasped. "Oh, no." She ran a hand through her blonde hair before pointing to a nap. "There's been two massacres. Pastor Young's farm is here, and the old Lockwood cellar," she glared at Nik and I. "-where you both spitefully slaughtered 12 of your own hybrids, is here." I growled but she ignored me. "According to the book, the expression triangle is equilateral, putting it here."
"Somebody's been skipping their geometry classes." I rolled my eyes. "There are actually two places where the third massacre could be." I pointed to the other spot where it could be.
Caroline, Nik and I ventured through the woods towards one of the two locationd that Bonnie could be at.
"You know, when we split up, you did have the option of going with Stefan," I blurted out of nowhere, getting annoyed with her presence.
"Yeah? And leave Bonnie's life your hands? Fat chance," she grounded out with narrowed eyes which pissed me off.
"You mean, leave me in Bonnie's hands, right?" I questioned. "I mean, that bitch basically fried my brain - a brain in which can't heal like a vampires," I reminded her. "You know, you guys used to be my friends," I started. "I was there to protect you when Damon wanted to kill the after you turned. I was there to help you, and be there for you when you needed someone, but you were never there for me. You were my friend, Caroline and then you ruined it."
"I did not ruin it," she told me in disbelief. "You did. You chose them - him - over your own family, over your friends. Did you think that we were all drawn to the darkness, like you?" She asked in anger, throwing her hands around.
"Wow," I stared at her with narrowed eyes. "So... you want me to be alone for my whole life? Did you not want me to find the love of my life?" I scoffed. "Friends are suppose to stick by you no matter what. I did that, you guys didn't." I shook my head as I looked at her in disbelief and anger. "You guys were so lucky to have a friend like me because I gave you all more than a second chance. I have you all like six. Six! You guys gave me one. The moment I started to befriend Nik and his family, you guys pinned me as a villain, as someone else that you had to get rid of!"
"That's not tr--"
"It is true!" I shouted. "You know," I chuckled humorlessly. "I think that I should've stayed in Beacon Hills because at least there, I would be around people who would be there for me no matter what. Because unlike you guys, I know that Stiles and Scott would be there for me." I threw my hands out to my sides. "But, if I stayed in Beacon Hills, I would've never met Nik, the other person I know that will be there for me no matter what."
"Spen--"
"She isn't here," I stated, interrupting Caroline as wevapproached the spot where Bonnie might've been.
"Spencer," Caroline started but I ignored her again, turning to Nik.
"We need to go to where Stefan is," I stated and he nodded, sending me a concerned look. "I need to take my anger out," I stated, turning around to go to where the other location was.
"They're linked," Stefan told us as we arrived at the spot where Bonnie was in the middle of circle of witches. "Bonnie's gonna kill them."
"Not if the witches kill her first," I spoke nonchalantly.
"Ugh!" Caroline groaned in irritation and anger. "We need to save her."
"How?" I questioned. "The only way to stop the witches is to kill them, and then Silas gets what he wants."
"Spirits, take her soul," the head witch spoke in a chant. "Free her from darkness." She was about to kill Bonnie but Caroline intervened and snapped her neck. All the witches fell to the ground, limp, dead.
I groaned and shook my head, getting more and more annoyed with Caroline as the day goes on.
"I'm done with this shit," I told Nik before walking away, shaking out my hands as I tried to control the burning rage that wanted to escape me.
I leaned up against a tree as I watched Nik finish digging holes for the twelve witches in which Caroline had killed.
"There," Nik huffed. "Twelve graves for twelve witches. Like it never happened. Only it did happen, and now Silas has everything he needs to open the gates to hell on earth."
Caroline looked over at me. "You were just gonna let Bonnie die."
I shrugged, not really caring for the fact that Bonnie almost died. She had betrayed me, locked Klaus and I in a room for days, and then didn't stop Katherine from killing Jeremy. She deserved whatever was coming for her.
"I know arithmetic isn’t your strong point, but one is still less than twelve," I told Caroline, crossing my arms.
"She was once your best friend!" Caroline shouted at me, disgust on features. "How can you stand there and say that!? I understand what you said about me, but why hate on her?"
"I can say this because Bonnie was a bitch!" I seethed, glaring at the blonde. "She basically aided in the death of Kol who was a really good friend of mine! She has let terrible things happen to me time and time again. She deserved that! Hell, you, Elena, Damon, and basically everyone I thought I could trust in Mystic Falls deserve something like this, something worse, actually!"
"I can't even recognize you, anymore," She said, shaking her head as tears shone in her eyes. She scoffed before walking away.
I sighed and ran a hand through my hair before turning to Klaus. "I'm tired, I'm going home to get down rest. You coming?"
He nodded. "Be there in a minute, you go right on ahead." He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to my lips.
I smiled before flashing away.
My eyes widened as I ran to Nik's side. He was shirtless and in pain. He has deeply scratched and damaged his back. He dislocated his shoulder and screamed as I tried to comfort him.
"Nik? Baby, what's wrong? What happened? Who did this to you?" I growled as I imagined ripping the head off of the person who had done this to my love.
"Silas," Nik grounded out through clenched teeth. "He attacked me. He stabbed me with the white oak stake. A piece of it is still inside me."
My eyes widened and I grabbed onto his face, searching his eyes. "What do you want me to do? Pull it out?"
He nodded, clenching his jaw harshly. "It would be lovely if you did so."
I nodded and went around him to where I was looking at his toned back. "I don't see anything," I told him, narrowing my eyes. I cleared my throat and briefly closed my eyes. "This might hurt." I slowly dug my hand into his back, searching near his heart for any wood pieces but there was none. "Nik, baby..." I trailed off. "There is nothing in there. Nothing."
I went back around him to where I was facing him. He was looking up at me in confusion, his big blue eyes full of fear and pain. My heart broke just looking at him in this much pain, so I only did what I thought would help ease his mind -- kiss him.
He relaxed and started to kiss me back, his hands finding their way to my hair before he gasped, pulling back. "It's gone," He whispered.
"What?" I asked, confused.
He looked me in the eyed. "The pain. The pain is gone." His eyes softened and he slumped down in his seat. "It was… it was never there. He got in my head. Silas... got inside my head." He looked at me with so much passion and love that I felt as though I could melt. "You took my mind off it. You brought me back, love."
"Of course I did," I said, smiling ear to ear before leaning down to press our lios together. I then pulled back, the things he said finally dawning on me. "If Silas can make you, of all people, believe that you're dying... What can he do to the rest of us?"
Rebekah's annoyed voice came through the phone. "What do you want, Nik?"
"An update on our search for the elusive cure," I said, annoyed, my eyes finding Nik's. After finding him so hurt and vulnerable, I have been so worried about him.
"Let's just say that things have gotten complicated. In fact, why don't you speak to one of those complications? Here." The next voice that had come through the phone made me squeal in happiness. "Complication speaking," Elijah's voice had said.
"'Lijah!" I shouted, looking to Nik with big eyes. "'Lijah is talking to me!"
"Big brother," Nik acknowledged. "At last you join the fray."
"Somebody had to take charge," Elijah stated. "And now that I have, I've got the cure and I'm bringing it back to Mystic Falls."
"With a long list of demands, I assume." Nik sighed, taking my hand in his.
"Not that long," Elijah denied.
"Come home, brother," Nik said. "We'll settle this like family."
Elijah, Rebekah, Nik, and I sat at the table, looking at each other. Nik and I listened to what Elijah and Rebekah wanted and to say that I was shocked was an understatement.
"Being human means a fresh start," Rebekah told us. "I can grow old and have a family and fill my days with meaning, knowing that each one matters."
"Well, that was poetic," Nik sarcastically stated.
"Well," Elijah clicked his tongue. "-if you can provide us with a more compelling reason for wanting the cure, Klaus, please."
"Silas can appear as anyone," Nik told them. "He got inside my thoughts, convinced me I was dying. He will torment me until I give him the cure."
"And in doing so, he will break down the wall to the other side," Rebekah stated, shrugging.
"So it doesn't trap him there when he dies," I joined in, making all eyes look to me. "He wants to reunite with his lost soul mate." I looked to Nik and smiled, "I would do the same for Nik."
Rebekah stared at me in disbelief. "He will open the floodgates for every supernatural being that has ever died."
"Including our dear brothers Kol and Finn," Nik stated which made me sit up straighter. Having Kol back might fill the small void in which I had been feeling since his departure. I loved him like a brother and I miss him so much. "We'll have our family back."
"Please!" Rebelah shouted. "You hated Kol. And you kept Finn in a box for most of his life."
Nik looked to Elijah for help. "Elijah, please."
Elijah shook his head which made me scoff. "Your personal discomfort might not be sufficient reason for putting the entire world in jeopardy, Klaus. I think our sister deserves a shot at happiness."
"Tell me you're joking!" I shouted, staring at Elijah in disbelief. "Tell me you're not fating Nik to an eternity of torture, and fating me for an eternity of torture without him, tell me!" I demanded, slamming the palm of my hands on the tables surface.
Elijah looked me in the eyes. "I've made my decision."
"Ugh!" I shouted in rage and slammed my hand so hard onto the table that it broke in half. "I thought you were different, Elijah, but you're clearly not. You're just Elena and her bunch of asswipes - willing to let me suffer for the rest of my life, alone. If Nik dies, I will, too. He is my life-line. I don't think I would be able to live without him."
I stared at Elijah them Rebekah before storming away, growling.
"You would never leave, right?" I asked Nik as he walked into our bedroom.
He looked towards me and stared at me for a few seconds before shaking his head. "Never," he told me before walking towards me, taking my face in his hands. "I love you so much." He smiled. "I would never leave you."
I looked up into his eyes, biting my lips, getting a tugging feeling at my heart but I ignored it as I attacked his mouth with mine.
Soon, we were both stripped of all clothing and under the sheets, having a night full of love.
