CHAPTER TEN
"Hungry dogs are never loyal."
From where I sat on the couch in a curled up position, I continued to stare at Kol's charred body. The longer I looked at him, the more I felt a weight weigh down on my heart.
"Morning, Sunshine's." I continued to stare at Kol's body as I heard Tyler's very annoying voice. "You both look pathetic."
Nik, who I saw glance at me in the corner of his eyes, said, "Only until Bonnie's spell locking me in here wears off. Then I'll look different. Angrier, perhaps. Or, I won't look like anything, because I'll have gouged your eyeballs from their sockets!"
I saw Tyler smirk, "My friends will be back with the cure by then. So, I could shove it down your throat and make you mortal."
Nik glared at him, "I'm an original. What makes you think my entire vampire bloodline won't be cured along with me? I.E., you."
Tyler tilted his head and pushed himself away from the wall. "You know what I think?" He glanced at me, "I think that's impossible. I think the moment you stop being a vampire, our whole blood connection to you is broken, and your sire-line ceases to exist. So, whatever happens to you happens only to you, which means I can kill your ass and no one else has to die. Although I am still debating just how to do it."
Angrily, I got up and faced Tyler. "I recommend drowning. There's nothing quite like the feeling of someone fighting for something as basic as human breath. And let me tell you, your mother was a fighter." Tyler tilted his head and glared at me as I looked at him with determinance and anger.
_______
The front door opened and I turned around to see Caroline walking towards Tyler. "You're still here? What are you doing?"
Tyler turned to her, "Gloating."
I stood up and looked Caroline in the eyes, trying to keep my anger at bay, "Hello, Caroline."
Caroline turned away from me and towards Tyler. "Come home. Don't stoop to his or her level."
Tyler shook his head. "He destroyed my life. I plan on being present for every second of his misery until I can kill him myself. And to make things even better, i'll kill Spencer right in front of him."
Caroline exhaled deeply, "Fine. You can gloat and multitask. This place is a disaster. Starting with a horrific burnt corpse." I sucked in a huge breath as they covered Kol's charred body with a sheet.
Nik stepped up beside me and placed his hand on the small of my back. "Tyler's mother is dead. So is my brother. We're even. Call Bonnie and get her to let us out of here."
Caroline turned to us with a heated glare, "I will never, ever, help either of you."
I scoffed and crossed my arms. "You know, at one point, we were best friends until you ruined everything."
Nik rubbed my back as he spoke, "How quickly you forget the part where I saved Tyler from the misery of being a werewolf. Or the night your mother invited me into her home to save the life of her 'precious' daughter. Or when Spencer begged me to help save your life."
Caroline then snapped, "How delusional are you? You both killed his mother. And let's not forget that we're standing in a house where Elena's and Spencer's Aunt Jenna used to live. Or did you think that your charm would make us forget how you killed her, too, like it did with Spencer? You know what?" She shook her head as she stood right in front of the barrier. "No. I am not going to engage in this. You are not even worth the calories I burn talking to you."
I turned my head slightly to Nik and nodded my head. We both realized how close she was. Quickly, Nik grabbed a long wooden stick, stakes her, and pulled her into the living room with us. He bit into her neck, drunk her blood, and then let her fall to the floor.
"No!" Tyler shouted.
Nik looked up at me as I smirked at him. He smirked right back at me, "Now, that was definitely worth the calories."
I picked up Caroline by her hair and threw her over to Tyler who sat her down as she panicked.
I turned to Nik as he sat down on the couch. I smirked as I sat down onto his lap, leaning my head onto his chest.
Tyler stood up and turned to us, more specifically, Nik. "She'll die if you don't heal her."
Nik shrugged, "Okay. Beg me to save her life."
Tyler looked at us in disbelief, "Is this what you want? To remind me that I'm powerless against you? Fine. You win. I'm nothing. Now, save her. Please."
I stood up and leaned forward, putting my hand up to my ear. "I'm sorry. We didn't quite catch that."
Tyler sighed, "Please. Please save her life, Klaus."
Nik grinned, "See, now I think you're just telling me what I want to hear. I mean, you did call us pathetic earlier. And wouldn't it be more pathetic of me to help now, knowing that hours ago, you announced your plan to kill us in a manner in which you're still debating because you want it to have a certain amount of flair?" He paused, "I'm just asking." He said, innocently.
"I'll be your slave again," Tyler said, shocking us. "I'll do whatever you both want. Just help her."
Nik looked to me and I shook my head. He turned to Tyler, "No."
Caroline glared up at us, "Get me out of here. I can't even look at him"
Tyler picked her up, "Come on."
"Then there was two." I commented and sat down back onto the couch, my eyes subconsciously looking over at Kol's covered body.
It was day time when Tyler showed back up with Caroline, laying her on the floor by the barrier. "You want to be in control, Klaus? Here. Now you get to be in control of her life. If you want her to die, fine. But then you can sit here and watch her die yourself." He then left.
I looked to Nik before looking down at Caroline. Klaus was the one who spoke up, "Nothing personal, Caroline. If I heal you that means victory for him. Don't worry. It won't be long now."
I fake pouted, "actually, it's kinda personal for me." I looked down at Caroline. "You were a best friend to me, but you ruined that when you chose Elena over me. And then, you sent Nik and I to our deaths, knowing fully well that I barely had a chance to get out of there. You along with Elena and the others are just backstabbers. You all have ruined any chance with me. I gave you guys chance after chance after chance, but, now I gave up on you guys. I'm pretty sure it's a good thing, too, because if I stayed with you guys, I would end up dead."
Minutes later, Caroline still laid on the floor, breathing heavier as the time went on.
"If you don't get Klais to feed me his blood, I'll die." Carolina's weak voice filled my ears.
I shrugged, not looking away from Kol's covered body. "Then you'll die, and Tyler will have learned his lesson the hard way."
Caroline whimpered, "How could you do this to him? To his mom? To me?"
"Because, Caroline," I angrily turned to her, "You guys have ruined me.
You guys -- the Scooby Gang -- have ruined my life more than anything else. At first, yes, sure, it was all fun and games but then death's after death's kept happening, and everything started to go down hill. One after another, you all betrayed me. Every single one of you except Nik. He's been there with me through thick and thin. So has his family, but Elena and Jeremy decided to kill one of the family members just because they want to find a cure that probably won't even work." I let in a shaky breath. "Maybe I'm just going pure evil, maybe that's why."
Caroline shook her head as much as she could. "No. It's because you were hurt. Which means that there is a part of you that is human, like there always has been. You might've been turned into a werewolf, but that didn't change you. You changed you and that's why you have done these bad things. You are not evil, Spencer."
Tears came to my eyes, "How could you possibly think that?"
"Because I've seen it. Because...I've caught myself wishing that I could forget all the horrible things that you've done." She took in a breath, "Spencer... I like you. I like like you. I've liked you for a long time now and when I see the way you are with Klaus, it just makes me so angry that it makes me do things I never thought I would do, like... like try to kill him so that you would come to me like you always use to do when something happened to you."
"Care--" I choked out, tears falling down my cheeks. "I... I... You're hallucinating. You don't... you don't feel that way about me."
Caroline let out a small breath, "I guess I'll never know." Her breathing is even more weak than before. And then, all of a sudden, she stopped breathing.
"Nik!" I shouted, tears escaping my eyes. Nik zoomed towards Caroline, and fed her his blood. She gasped and started to greedily suck his blood.
______
"Tell me you're not serious." Caroline begged as she paced around on the phone with Elena.
"I wish I weren't. When we got back from looking for Jeremy, Shane and Bonnie were both gone, too. Shane needs Bonnie to cast a spell on Jeremy's tattoo in order to find the cure, and he managed to sneak them both out from under our noses."
"Well, where's Damon in all this?"
"We had an argument. I thought he was just taking a walk, but then when we went to the beach, we saw signs of a struggle."
"Meaning what?"
"Meaning somebody probably jumped him and then grabbed him."
"Do you think Shane took him?"
"No, I mean, he's not strong enough to take Damon on, even with the element of surprise. He must have someone or at least a few someones helping him."
"I am so sorry. I wish I was there to help."
"Well, maybe there's something you can do from home. So Shane's looking for the cure. We think we can find him. We have pictures of Jeremy's tattoo, but we just can't translate the map."
Caroline sighed, "Unless you get the hunter's sword from Klaus." She turned to look at Nik and I, and we both smirked at her. Just because I saved her life hours before, it doesn't mean I forgave her."
"Exactly."
I then heard Rebekah's voice on the phone. "He'll never give up the sword."
Stefan then spoke, "Yeah, but if anyone's gonna get him to give it up, it's Spencer."
Rebekah commented, "He will never give up the sword, not even for Spencer. Plus, Spencer won't help us, she hates us all because we all betrayed her. Klaus is terrified we'll use the cure against him to make him mortal, and even if he wasn't, he wouldn't want any of us to derive a moment's worth of happiness from being human."
"Well, maybe he doesn't have to give it up. Klaus and Spencer is stuck in Elena's house by Bonnie's spell. They can't go anywhere. There's only so many places you can hide a 3-foot piece of metal."
Caroline heaved out a sigh, "I'll find it. Don't worry. Just email me photos of Jeremy's tattoo. I'll find the sword and I'll call you back." She then hung up.
I tilted ny head at Caroline, "Need our help with anything, love?"
Caroline's cheeks flushed a littled, "Nope." She then stormed out of the house.
Hours later, Caroline came walking back into the house with Tyler following right behind her.
I clapped my hands, "Well, well, well, if it isn't little orphan Lockwood. Come to show how laughably impotent you are against us?" I then clicked my tongue and held up my finger. "Or better yet, about how Caroline isn't even in love with you, but actually is in love with me."
Tyler pulled a face before shaking his head. "I'm just trying to help my friends find the cure. Found this in your attic." He turned around, showing us the sword.
Nik tilted his head, "And you think finding the sword brings you closer to the cure?"
Tyler shrugged, "You tell me. I was playing around with the handle on the ride over... And I found this." He unraveled the leather on the handle to show a cryptex.
I smirked and walked towards them, "And what do you think this is?"
Caroline looked up at me with her big blue eyes, "It's called a cryptex." I sent her an impressed look. "I've seen "The Da Vinci Code." You turn the different sides to the different symbols to get the translation on the other side. And, with the magic of the Internet, Elena sent over these," She showed us the pictures of Jeremy's tattoo. "So now all we have to do is cryptex away. If either of you happened to want to help, we wouldn't stop you. 'Cause, Spencer, I know you love these types of things."
Nik clapped his hands together before bringing me into his side. "Right. Well, might I suggest using the magic of the Internet to purchase an Aramaic-to-English dictionary from your nearest retailer?"
Tyler pulled his eyebrows together in confusion. "What's Aramaic?"
"It's a dead language," I stated, grinning at Nik, "It hasn't been used since, like, biblical times."
Nik grinned right back at me, "Qetsiyah's native tongue, I'm guessing. You know, even if you had the best dictionary in the world, it could take days to translate... Perhaps weeks. "In bas so-teen-too ara-ma-eet."
Caroline knitted her brows together, again, "What does that mean?"
Nik smirked, "If only you spoke Aramaic."
"Okay," Caroline spoke up after hours of working in the cryptex. "This is it. We've translated all the symbols on the tattoo. "Passage inside... Requires a young senator and a pretty flower." Okay, none of this makes sense," She stresses, running a hand over her face.
Nik repeated it in the Aramaic language. When he saw the confused looks, he repeated it again, but this time, in English. "Requires a powerful witch and a hunter in full bloom."
Tyler stood up and looked Nik in the eyes, "What are you doing?"
Nik shrugged, "I don't need to tell you my reasons. Bring my sword over here." She did as told and Nik read off of the handle, "Silas rests on the far side, the means of his destruction at hand." Turn the cryptex to the right," she turned it, "Stop," she stopped, "The top of the hilt reveals a key to a nautical map. Turn it to the left," she did as told,,"Now turn the other piece," She turned it, "Wait," she paused, "There's something else."
There was only one dose of the cure.
Caroline quickly dialed Rebekah's number which made me wonder how she got it.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it's Caroline. We have the translation of the tattoo. We're emailing you pictures of the map and instructions right now."
"Got it. Thanks."
Nik spoke up, smirking, "Actually, it was Spencer and I."
"Nik, you and Spencer helped?"
Nik placed a kiss on my temple. "You sound so surprised, little sister"
"Shouldn't I be? I mean, you don't want me to be human. You don't want any of us to be human. Why would you help us find the cure?"
Nik wrapped his arms around me, "Maybe I finally realized the longer I stand in the way of what you want, the longer you'll continue to hate me and Spencer. Perhaps I want my sister to finally know happiness."
"Fool me once, shame on you; Fool me a hundred times..."
Nik shook his head, "No more fooling. No more games. I hope you get to live, and die, as you wish."
"So do I."
Quickly, seeing an opportunity, I rushed out, "There is one more thing, Rebekah. There is only one dose of the cure. You need to find it fast and take it. It's the only way you'll--" before I could finish, Caroline hung up and glared at me.
Tyler rushed outside onto the porch with Caroline rushing after him. They started arguing which I found really entertaining.
Hours later, when it was night time, Caroline walked inside and stood in front of the barrier with pleading eyes, staring at Nik. "You can't kill Tyler."
Nik tilted his head. "Not only can I, I have to. I have a reputation to uphold. Moreover, I want to. I really, really want to."
Caroline frowned, but she was still determined, "I'm not asking you to forgive him. All I'm asking is that you let him live, somewhere far from here."
I stood up and walked towards her to where we were face to face. "So he gets to live a happy life after he turned all Nik's hybrids against both him and I, after he tried to kill us, after he made it his life's mission to find the cure so he could use it against Nik?" I crossed my arms.
Caroline's eye twitched, "We all want the cure."
I narrowed my eyes, "Do we? Do you? I mean, at first, I wanted it to help everyone but if y'all were willingly up to killing Kol and thousands other vampires who are all most likely innocent in all this, then I want nothing to do with it."
"It doesn't matter," Caroline admitted, "There's only one, so it's not like I'm gonna get it anyway."
"But if you could..." Nik trailed off, coming up behind me. "You wouldn't, would you? You prefer who you are now to the girl you once were. You like being strong, ageless, fearless. We're the same, Caroline."
Caroline begged, "Then show me. You know how much I love Tyler. You can see how scared I am to lose him. If you and I are so similar, then show me your compassion. Show him the mercy that I would show you. The both of you."
"Mercy… for Tyler?" Nik scoffed before nodding, "Very well. Tell him to leave town immediately. And tell him to run and hide in a place I will never find him."
Caroline nodded, smiling, "Of course."
"Tell him that this is the mercy I extend for your sake..." I trailed off, looking Caroline in the eyes. "That we will give him a head start before we kill him... together."
Caroline turned around to look at me in shock.
"You said i've changed, and I have. I am not that weak, pathetic, annoying girl who needs to be saved anymore. I am the strong, brave, and fearless Spencer, the werewolf who is willing to do anything for those I love. But, the thing is, you guys -- the Scooby Gang -- are no longer the people I am willing to do anything for."
Moments later, the spell that held Nik and I in the living room was released, allowing us to walk out of the house.
As we did so, my phone rung.
"Hello?" I answered, my hand finding Nik's as we walked down the street.
"Spencer?" Came my brothers voice. "Something has happened. Scott's dead."
