CHAPTER SIXTEEN
"Are monsters born or created?"
I'M just laying on my bed, laying on my stomach, reading one of Elijah's journals. Hayley was right beside me, listening.
"August 1359. I have noticed a difference in my siblings. Our bond strains beneath the pressure of our life as vampires. Each day removes them further from the humanity we once possessed. My sweet sister, Rebekah, has grown quite indifferent to brutality. However, the true problem remains my brother, Niklaus. He continues to hide his loneliness with cruelty. Still, I cling to the hope that I, as their eldest brother, can lead them down the correct path, a path charged with the power of a family united. For if I fail, our family's legacy will end in darkness."
I then heard arguing so I stopped reading and listened in on what Rebekah and Klaus were talking about. I glanced to Hayley, raising an eyebrow as she buried her head under a pillow, making an annoyed groan.
"I cannot believe you disposed of those vampires without me. You know how I love to set things on fire," We could hear Rebekah yell at her brother.
"Was I supposed to leave them in the front yard to rot?" Klaus questioned sarcastically. "Besides, they were my responsibility. They attacked the helpless pregnant girl who's carrying my child," I heard Klaus say which made me growl. I was not helpless. And he knew that.
"Oh, I am so moved by your newfound sense of fatherly duties towards your ex werewolf girlfriend who you left in the middle of the night, carrying your hybrid bun in her oven," Rebekah told him, sarcastically.
"The ex werewolf girlfriend and her friend would like to know what the plan is," I said, gesturing between both Hayley and I as we both walked into the room, Elijah's book held closely to my chest.
"Well, that depends what plan you mean, love: My plan for global domination, or Rebekah's plan to find love in a cruel, cruel world " Klaus said, with a cute smile that made my insides twist. No, stop that. He hurt you, I though to myself.
Rebekah grabbed a pencil from the desk beside her and threw it in Klaus' direction, but of course he caught it easily before it can impale his face.
"The plan to rescue Elijah. The one who is now in the possession of your mortal enemy after you stabbed him in the back," I told him with a frown, raising my eyebrows.
"In the front, if we're being specific," Klaus said with a small smile on his face. I just shook my head at him, mad, but a traitor smike appeared in my face which I quickly stopped. I don't want him thinking that I have forgiven him, because that's not what happened.
"You two said that you would get him back. So is there a plan, or what?" Hayley asked them.
"Okay. Well, firstly, Marcel is not my mortal enemy—he's my friend, albeit one who is unaware that I'm trying to sabotage his hold over the supernatural community of the French Quarter, but a friend nonetheless. And secondly, I daggered Elijah in order to gain Marcel's trust. If I had known he would place my brother in the hands of a particularly nasty teenaged witch, I certainly would have weighed my options a bit differently. And thirdly, sister, please." Klaus said, turning to Rebekah. Both Hayley and I looked at Rebekah, waiting for whatever she had to say.
"And thirdly, the plan, as you have demanded, is for Niklaus to simply ask Marcel for Elijah back," Rebekah told us which made me scoff out an unimpressed laugh.
"That's not the whole plan, is it?" I asked, gobsmacked. Scott, hell, even Stiles could come up with a better plan than that, and that's saying something because neither of their plans worked to our likings. Stiles is smart, yes, but also weirdly stupid.
"Please, Klaus may be a miserable excuse for a sibling, but there is none more diabolical," Rebekah told me, giving me a look. "You should know this by now, Spencer, you've known him long enough, hell, you fought along side him for a good bit, too."
"And that's only the Plan A, love. There's always a Plan B," Klaus informed me, with the smile still on his face.
"And what's plan B?" I asked, craning my neck, trying to show that his smile wasn't making me all queasy on the inside.
"War," Klaus simply said with a wicked smile.
HAYLEY and I were outside when we heard a twig snap, we walked towards it to find a wolf staring at us.
"You're not suppose to be out here," A voice said from behind us, making us whirl around to find a woman around mid-twenties standing not that far from us.
"Who are you?" I asked, harshly, my eyes glowing their electric blue color that I had earned after killing Connor.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I'm Sabine. We met. I'm one of Sophie's friends," Sabine told us, a smile spreading across her face.
"You're one of the witches," Hayley stated, pulling me behind her which made me scoff. Just because I was pregnant, it didn't mean that I couldn't fend for myself.
"Sophie just asked me to come keep you company while everyone's out." There was a pause before she spoke again. "You know, it's drawn to you," Sabine told Hayley who nodded. There was another pause before she looked to me. "The child you're carrying is part vampire, part B werewolf. You and Klaus made something special," Sabine told me and I protectively put my hand on my stomach, and let out a growl.
"You sound like Elijah. He thinks this baby is going to make us one big, happy family, but now he's gone and I don't even know what... 'it' is," I told her, talking about the baby.
"You know, I can do something about that, if you want. I mean, find out if it's a boy or girl," She told me, her eyes finally leaving my stomach to look me in the eyes.
"I thought you couldn't do witchy stuff here," Hayley spoke up, her posture tense.
"It's not magic, just an old trick my grandmother taught me. Come on. You have to be a little curious," She said and I nodded, rubbing my stomach. She had me there. My baby was my weak spot now.
I was on the laptop searching up some things when Klaus paused at the door, then fully walked in.
"I thought you might like to know, Elijah is returning to us," Klaus told me in a kind voice, I looked up at him, my eyes hard. He looked guilty and sad. Serves him right for doing what he did to me.
"Congratulations. I guess being diabolical has its perks." I told him, rolling my eyes, going back to searching.
"I apologized, Spencer," Klaus suddenly spoke, his voice raw. "I told to you what I did was to protect you, why can't you just see that?"
"Because you hurt me, Klaus," I said, sighing. "Out of everyone, I thought you were never going to hurt me, not like that, at least. I mean, I thought I understood when I thought you died, but, honestly that still hurts, too. You were alive and didn't seek me out, you didn't tell me, I had to figure it out after my twin sister literally died in front of me after being possessed by the Nogitsune. But, leaving at your own will after promising that you wouldn't and after we had a passionate night - that hurt a whole-fucking-lot. I thought you loved me."
"I do," Klaus defended himself. "I do love you."
"You don't hurt the people you love," I said softly, a tear escaping one of my eyes. "Besides Stiles and Scott, I thought you were the only other person who hadn't and would never hurt me, but you did. I have literally been hurt one way or another by everyone in Mystic Falls, except for you until that night."
"I'm sorry. I truly am, Spencer. I never meant to hurt you." Klaus sighed, looking down. "No matter what I do, it always blows up in my face."
He went to walk away, but I sighed, letting out a breath. "Klaus . . ." He paused at the doorway, not looking back. "I learned something today. I think it's a girl." I rubbed my stomach. "Also, thank you," I whispered, looking back to the computer.
Klaus walked away, a faint smile on his face.
