CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE
"I will love you, always and forever."
SOME time before the events of The Battle of New Orleans, Spencer sat in a rocking chair in the baby's room, where she is writing a letter. Klaus entered the room and leaned in the doorway.
"Writing a love letter to one of your old flames? That jackass you once told me about? Oh, what about Damon?" Spencer rolled her eyes. "Don't tell me it's me?" They both laughed.
Spencer laughed. "I swear, you're such an idiot sometimes." She gestured towards Klaus who continued to laugh. Spencervthen groaned when the baby started to kick.
Klaus walked towards his girlfriend. "How is our littlest wolf?"
"Do you want to...?" Spencer rubbed her baby bump. Klaus stepped back, looking nervous, and Spencer gave him a look. "Come on!" She gestured to her belly. Klaus reached out and touched her belly, and he's startled when he felt the baby kick. "You feel that?" They both laughed in amazement.
Klaus smiled and passionately kissed the girl of his dreams. "I love you both so much."
IN a voiceover, Spencer narrated her letter as the scene cut to her giving birth with the help of the witches.
"Dear Zoe...or Kaitlyn...or Angela. To my little girl. Your dad just asked if this was a love letter. I guess it kind of is. I barely got to know my mother before she was taken from me. I have no idea what she must have thought when she carried me."
Spencer screamed at Genevieve and Monique. "Let go of me!"
"So, I thought I'd write to you, so you can know how happy I am at this very moment. How much your father and I can't wait to meet you..."
The door opened to the church and Klaus limped in.
Spencer stopped struggling as soon as she saw him. Klaus lunged towards a witch guard and ripped his head off. Abigail and Genevieve linked hands and telekinetically pinned Klaus to the wall.
"And, I want to make you a promise, of three things that you will have that I never did: a safe home, someone to tell you that they love you every single day, and someone to fight for you, no matter what."
Klaus fought against the spell pinning him to the wall, but he cannot get free. Monique and Abigail anchor the spell and went back to Spencer.
"No!" Spencer started struggling again, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"In other words, a family. So, there you go, baby girl. The rest, we're going to have to figure out together. I love you. Your mom."
Klaus and Spencer watched fearfully as Genevieve grabbed the ceremonial athame that was used for the Harvest.
Spencer continued to scream in agony and terror for her baby girl.
"You should know this brings me no joy. I promise I'll make it quick." Gevevieve told both of them, but Spencer didn't care what she had to say, after she is out of this situation, she was going to rip Genevieve's head off.
One of the witches covered Spencer's lower half with a sheet. "Let's begin, shall we?"
"No!" Spencer screamed, squirming and trying to break from from their hands. "No!" She cried out.
Spencer screamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"I will bring hell to your family!" Klaus screamed as he looked down at Spencer.
"One last push! Push! The baby's almost here!" Genevieve ignored Klaus and ordered Spencer.
"I will bathe in rivers of your blood!" He screamed, tears in his eyes.
"No! No!" Spencer yelled.
"I can see the baby!"
"Push! Gently! Gently!"
"You will die screaming!" Klaus shouted in a fit of rage.
Spencervhead fell backwards just as crying was heard throughout the church.
"There!"
Both Klaus and Spencer stopped screaming once they saw their baby.
One of the witches helped cut the umbilical cord, and Genevieve wrapped the baby in a blanket.
"You have a beautiful baby daughter," she spoke softly. "We must start the sacrifice as soon as the moon sets with the morning sky," Genevieve spoke, cradling the baby to her body.
"Please. Please, can I hold her?" Spencer asked desperately.
Genevieve brought the baby over so she could hold them.
Spencer looked up at Klaus and weakly smiled. She kissed their baby's head before her hair was suddenly pulled and something slid across her throat.
Spencer gurgled up blood, her eyes widening and her hands flying up to her throat as she tried to stop the bleeding, but she felt herself grow weaker and weaker until everything went black.
"No!" Was the last thing she heard.
Once Spencer's body hit the table, the witches grabbed the baby before leaving the church.
Klaus screamed in terror, shock, sadness and anger.
As the witches leave, Monique twisted her wrist, which caused Klaus to fall to the floor, weakened. He looked up at Spencer's dead body above him in horror.
A few moments later, Elijah and Hayley barged into the church to find a dead Spencer in the arms of Klaus.
"No!" Hayley screamed, running forward towards her friend and fell to the ground, sobs leaving her body.
"No. No, no. No..." Elijah ran forward and fell to his knees next to Hayley.
"She's gone," Klaus spoke numbly as he stared down at the life of the girl he was in love with.
Elijah started to cry, which caused Klaus to start to cry, too. Hayley sat back and brought her hands to her face, loud cries leaving her body as she stared at the lifeless body of her best friend.
"You've been bitten. Here." Klaus bit into his wrist and offered it to Elijah, kindly. Elijah sat there, stunned and so did Hayley.
Klaus laid Spencer's body back onto the table at the sacristy while Elijah and Hayley sat nearby.
"How?" Hayley asked weakly.
"I was bested," Klaus mumbled weakly.
"You were bested. Huh." Hayley said angrily, her fangs showing. She marched towards Klaus. "You were bested!?" She shouted." Klaus looked at her in shock. "The invincible brother." Klaus pulled himself weakly to his feet and looked at Elijah and Hayley.
"They took our baby. But, there's still time. We can save her."
KLAUS, Elijah, and Hayley rushed around the cemetery, trying to figure out where the witches are keeping the babies.
"The tombs are empty, the grounds are deserted, their not here!" Elijah shouted frantically.
"This is the only place they can be! We'll keep searching," Klaus told his brother, trying to keep a straight face.
"They are not here, Niklaus! We're wasting time!" Hayley shouted angrily, looking around at the tombs.
"The Harvest was here! The Reaping was here! They're about to perform a ritual which will feed their ancestors for centuries! Ancestors who are buried here!" Klaus stopped talking when he noticed an angel statue on top of one of the tombs." Klaus sighed in frustration. "This statue, we've passed by this three times, all whilst going in the same direction."
Klaus, Elijah and Hayley brainstormed silently as they examine the various tombs near them.
"They've fabricated some kind of illusion." Elijah spoke his thoughts. Klaus vamp -sped to the top of the tomb with the angel statue and tried to get a better view of the cemetery. When he looks out, there seem to be an infinite number of tombs, stretching out to make the cemetery appear to be endless.
"That's one word for it."
THEY were still walking through the maze illusion in the cemetery, using a stone like a piece of chalk in order to mark the tombs that they pass.
Klaus sighed. "It's ingenius. I can see them, I can feel them, and yet, they are not real.
Hayley who is still distraught, ran her hands through her hair. "There has to be a way. Even if we could just push through--"
"What we need to do is focus."
"My only focus right now the baby and her safety, do you understand me?" Hayley grew furious. "This - all of this - this is the world that you created, Niklaus."
"Hayley-"
"All of your scheming, the enemies that you have made every single day of your miserable life - what results did you expect?" Elijah asked rhetorically, also yelling at Klaus. "That your child would be born into a happy life? That the mother would be alive to know her daughter? That we could live and thrive as some - as some sort of family?"
"That was your fantasy, brother, not mine!" Klaus yelled even though he wanted all of that with Spencer. He loves her so much.
"No, brother!" Elijah was enraged. "This was our hope. This was our family's hope." He tried to catch his breath. "And now she is gone." He sighed and his face softened. "Do you understand?"
"What!? Do you want me to say that I let this person in!?" Klaus was yelling now. "I let her in!" Klaus tried to hold back tears. "I don't let people in! You knew this. They've take her from me! I needed her, and now, they've broken me." Klaus sat down and but his head in his hands.
Elijah and Hayley sat down, on each side of Klaus and put a comforting hands on his shoulders.
"You can tell your daughter how much you cared for her mother when we save her," Hayley told Klaus, gaining some sympathy for him. Klaus looked up, his chin quivering.
SPENCER woke up with a loud gasp, grabbing at her throat.
As she sat up, she was overwhelmed with flashbacks of being in labor, the baby being born, Klaus being pinned to the wall, and Monique slitting her throat. She then felt this sensation that told her exactly what she needed to know. Her baby girl was still alive.
Spencer angrily got up and walked out of the church, marching towards the graveyard.
KLAUS, Elijah and Hayley werw breaking their way through the illusion by destroying the tombs. When they reach a room full of candles, they stopped and caught their breaths.
Elijah sighed. "We've passed through here twice already. We're running out of time." He punched through a wall in anger and frustration.
"Then we move faster." He marked the wall with a third tally mark.
Spencer called out from behind them. "Or smarter."
They froze when they heard her voice and slowly turned to her in shock.
"Spencer!" Hayley yelled and ran towards her and crushed her best friend in a hug.
"How are you here?" Klaus asked as he walked towards his love, tears in his eyes.
"I woke up in the church. I felt this hunger... I knew what I needed," Spencer told them numbly. "I can feel them. She's here. I can feel my baby girl."
Elijah and Hayley looked confused, but Klaus didn't.
"You died with the baby's blood still in your system." Klaus turned to Elijah and Hayley. "She's in transition."
"Which means she has to drink the blood of the children if she is to survive," Elijah spoke up, looking horrified.
"To be reborn a hybrid."
"I don't care about me. I'm gonna go find our daughter," Spencer told Klaus and then rushed forward.
HAYLEY, Elijah, Klaus and Spencer was still searching through the cemetery for their daughter.
Genevieve is about to sacrifice them. "Nouvel vie, nouvel ame, me longe avec nous."
They ran around a corner and saw Genevieve holding a knife above the baby's head.
"No!" Spencer yelled out in fear.
Elijah picked up an urn and threw it at the witches, which slammed against Genevieve's hand and knocked the athame onto the ground. We ran towards them, so Monique and Abigail held each other's hands and channeled the ancestors' power to throw them backwards while Genevieve went to find the athame.
"La mère, le père, le frère, la sœur... La mère, le père, le frère, la sœur..."
"You fools!" Monique yelled at them. "To come against us in our place of power, in our strongest hour. You don't face three, you face us all."
As they continued to use magic against us, that could see that hundreds and hundreds of the dead witches have come together to protect them as they complete their sacrifice.
Spencer groaned and tried to fight against the spell.
Klaus and Spencer looked at each other and than ran to opposite directions.
Spencer found Genevieve picking up the athame, and kicked it away from her and then punched her in the face. The brunette knocked her down and ran towards her baby, but Genevieve casted a pain infliction spell on her which made Spencer fall onto her knees, hands on her head.
Spencer could barely see as Klaus threw something at one of the girls and impaled her. Spencer tried to stand up, but more pain was pushed onto her. She screamed in pain and closed her eyes.
Spencer then saw Monique have the athame above her baby's head and she made a fire in front of Hayley, Klaus and Elijah to stop them.
"No!" Spencee yelled, holding her head. Then, right before Monique could stab her baby, something went flying towards her and she coughed up blood. Spencer noticed Marcel grab her baby and run off, Klaus chasing after him.
ELIJAH, Hayley and Spencer were shackling Genevieve in one of the tombs to get information from her.
"Why?" Spencer asked in anger.
"The ancestors left me no choice -"
"You were willing to sacrifice innocent babies for more power?" Spencer stepped up, her hands balling into fists as she snarled in anger.
"No, not just power! It was the ancestors' decree. It was her decree."
Elijah grabbed Genevieve roughly by the face and forced her to look at him. "It was whose decree?"
"I'm surprised you have to ask." She laughed weakly. "After all, you were the one who convinced your siblings to consecrate her on New Orleans soil." Elijah let go of her, disgusted.
"Esther," Spencer spoke in shock.
"So, not even death can stop my mother from seeking the annihilation of her own flesh and blood."
"This isn't the end. As long as those children live, the witches of New Orleans will never stop coming for them." She started to cry. "Esther will never stop coming for them. It has been decreed - your babies will be consecrated among their ancestors. They will not live." They glared at her. She then began to bleed from her eyes. "They're coming for me, I can feel it. I failed them. Understand - I just wanted to live. Tell Klaus... I'm sorry." She started to choke up blood.
Spencer watched for a moment, satisfied before she walked up to her and stabbed her in the stomach with the athame, and cut her abdoment open. "I'm not." Spencer growled.
AS Spencer sat in a rocking chair in the nursery, her baby in my arms, Klaus and Elijah were talking in her room which was right off of the nursery. Hayley stood beside her, looking down at the baby.
"We should have felt our mother's hand in this. We should have known she would not be bound by anything as obvious as death. And now, she has control of the witches. They will never stop," Klaus told Elijah, angry at himself.
"No."
"She will never be safe," Klaus spoke up. "What was it you said to me earlier? That I have made enemies every day of my miserable life? Well, the worst of them are within these borders, brother. I have brought into the world weapons they can use against me."
"Then we will arm ourselves! Brother, we have fought every adversary in this town, and we have won. And we'll fight them again, no matter who they are! We will make this home a fortress," Elijah told his brother, gesturing around.
Klaus lowered his voice. "I will not have them live here life as prisoners."
"Then we leave here, together. All of us."
"Wherever we go, however far we run, those who seek power and revenge will hunt us! They will hunt them. They have inherited all of our enemies with none of our defenses!"
"So, whether we stay, or we leave - we condemn them."
Spencer stood up and walked towards them, holding her baby girl, Hayley by her side. "There's a third option." She looked down at her baby. "I made a promise, to my baby and to myself, that she would not grow up like I did. That she would grow up safe, and loved. And yet, here she is, on her first day in this world, with a grandmother who is bent on sacrificing her." She paused as tears fell down her face. "Snd a-a mother, who has to drink the blood of her own baby to survive transitioning into a hybrid. And I'm the one who loves them the most." She looked looked down, sighing. "There is something going down in Beacon Hills and I told by brother I would help them out."
"Spencer..." Nik trailed off, giving her a look.
"Hold on s second," She said, giving him a look. "We'll call Rebekah and she can watch our baby girl for a couple of days until we take down whatever big bad is terrorizing my home, then she can bring Hope to us and then we can all live in my home town. It is and will always be a lot safer there than here. For one, we won't have to worry about those asshole witches."
"No! This is insane. You heard Genevieve - so long as they live, they will be hunted." Elijah stood up in anger and disbelief.
Klaus stood up and joined his girlfriend. "Not if no one knows they are alive."
"What is it you intend to do, brother?" Elijah asked in confusion.
"Whatever it takes to save our family." Klaus looked down at his beloved and their child.
CAMI approached the memorial wall on Rue Dumaine, where a crowd of people have gathered to pay their respects to all of the citizens who died in the (covered up) Battle of New Orleans. People cried around her as Cami scanned the photos and notes stuck to the wall. She saw a framed sign that reads "In Memorium: Baby Mikaelson" on the wall, and gasped.
A crowd of people gather for a candlelight vigil for the deceased community members. Hayley and Spencer arrived to set a bouquet of flowers by Baby Mikaelson's spot on the memorial wall. Spencer let a tear fall from her eyes.,
"They will be watching us. All of them. The three of us leaving together will draw too much attention. I will go alone. Take your mourning public when I am gone."
"I don't imagine that will be too difficult. Grief, after all, is grief."
Francesca watched as Spencer approached the memorial. She broke down in tears and blew a kiss to the plaque that announces the baby's "death." Hayley helped her friend up.
SPENCER let a small smile grace her lips once they all passed the 'welcome to beacon hills' sign. They were away from this horrible witches who wanted to kill her and Nik's baby.
