Chapter One: I Don't Feel So Alone
"You miss him, don't you?" Bridget asked, as she slid my lunch across the counter.
"When do I not miss him?" I said. I shoved another spoonful of Cheerios into my mouth. Bridget put the cereal back in the cupboard and said, "You've just got to stay optimistic. He's coming home in two months. I'm sure he misses you as much as you miss him."
If only time went as fast as it did in Blue Lake.
My eyes wandered to the clock on the stove. I was going to be late for the bus. Grabbing my backpack off the counter, I told Bridget I loved her and ran out the door, knabbing my leather jacket from the hook.
Leather jacket, you might ask? I had changed my image since Adam left. I guess I had just...grown up a little more. I was all leather and darker clothing now. I had dyed streaks of my hair a bright turquoise that was more electric and devious than pretty.
I was a bad girl. I screamed Don't mess with me.
I made it to the bus stop as the bus was pulling in. I sat alone on the bus, listening to my iPod. Swimming In Miami came on, but I instantly flicked it to a Beatles song. As much as I loved hearing Adam's voice, it painfully reminded me that he was so far away.
I knew that I had to just let go, like I had did with Dad, but as much as I tried, his memories ended up with me staying up late at night trying not to cry. I couldn't have a friendship with Adam if I sulked whenever he was gone.
A few girls behind me whispered and snickered. I knew I was the topic of conversation. I was still the talk of the town. A fourteen-year-old girl, allegedly fleeing from her small town up north with the help of...no way, Adam Young! He saved her from her drunken, abusive father. He's the best thing that's ever happened to her.
Most of that is true.
Sometimes I think that Adam wasn't the best thing that ever happened to me.
After all, you just have to look at me in order to figure it out.
I didn't bother turning off my iPod when the bus reached the high school. I wanted to block out all my peers as much as I could.
I accidentally bumped into a girl in the hallway, and I felt her glare at me. It was going to be a long day.
Then it took an interesting turn.
In my Advanced English class (which was thankfully the last class of the day), I was writing Adam's name all over a scrap paper when I was finished with the assignment. The girl next to me leaned over and read his repeated name, but when I was about to shut it, she whispered: "You like Owl City too?"
I nodded slowly, closing my notebook. I was a bit intrigued that she knew about him. I mean, he lived there, but I had never met another Hootowl before.
She laughed a little, her slightly curly auburn hair bouncing. "Do you think he's cute?"
"Well...um...I-I guess." I stated awkwardly.
"Me too." She smiled. "I'm Rose."
"Hadley."
"That's a cool name."
The teacher, Ms. Luriane, hushed us. So we just talked even quieter. Our conversation was entirely of Owl City's Adam Young.
"I would love to meet him. He seems like a great person." Rose whispered.
You have no idea.
The bell rang, and I was soon on the bus heading home. It felt to good to talk about Adam with someone besides Bridget, even though it wasn't very in-depth. And surprisingly, I didn't skip Galaxies when it appeared on my screen.
When I arrived at home, Bridget looked uncharacteristically...giddy. She tried to hide her smile behind her hands, even though she knew I could see.
"Um...Bridget?"
"Yes, Hadley?"
"Is there something you would like to tell me?"
"No, I was just thinking about something I read today."
"Really?"
"Really."
We were silent. The only sound we hurried was a car pulling onto the street.
The phone rang. Before she even looked at it, Bridget said, "Hadley, it's for you." She tossed it at me. I almost dropped it.
"Hello?" I stared directly at Bridget. I knew she had something to do with this.
"Hi, Hadley."
"Adam?"
"Yes."
"Oh, um, I haven't talked to you in a long time. I...miss you. A lot. Where...where are you?" My heart felt heavier thinking that he was so far away.
"I'm not that far actually." He said. There was a bit of background noise, like he was opening and closing something. "Go out on your doorstep."
I set the phone down and hurried towards the door. It was blown back by the autumn wind. I was about to say, "I don't see anything," but then I saw the car in the driveway.
And the man standing next to the car.
"Adam!"
Adam's POV
I smiled and slipped my phone back in my pocket as Hadley practically tackled/hugged me. It felt amazing having her so close again. I had just missed her so much.
"You're back so early!" She exclaimed.
"Yeah, I got the time off. I'll be here for Christmas."
"Really?" Her bright blue eyes were full of life. The autumn wind blew her hair in my face, and I tucked it back behind my ear.
When I arrived in the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport from France (It was a lovely trip, but I did miss Hadley and Bridget.), the officer who cleared customs asked me who I was coming back to. I said to a wonderful girl. The officer smiled, thinking the girl I was talking about was a girlfriend.
Hadley wasn't my girlfriend, but she was my everything. I realized that when I left.
Hadley took my hand, and started pulling me to the house. "Come on. It's freezing out here!"
Bridget just smiled when we came back inside. I had called her earlier that morning saying that I would be arriving that day and not to tell Hadley. I wanted to surprise her.
I gave her an awkward hug.
"It's nice to see you again." She said.
"It's nice to see you too."
But then she left to give us privacy. And before I could say anything, Hadley threw her arms around me and said, "I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too, Hadley."
Hi everyone!
Adam's back!
This chapter ended a bit abruptly, but there will be more to come soon.
But before you go, I have a question. What do you think if Hadley had a...significant other?
Vote and comment what you think!
Love,
Luna.
