♡ 49 - lights down ♡

The show that night was smooth sailing and finally, Virgil was prepared for one perfect show.

Just one.

He never missed a move while dancing, never forgot a word, wasn't too late to say his name in Four Jews in a Room Bitching.

"Yes, I know," Virgil sang that night. "Here I go." In his Whizzer Brown costume, he let his bare chest show from his unbuttoned mint green shirt.

"Play the game," Marvin, played by Luke, sang.

"Please don't watch me, I can do it!"

"Have a little scotch-"

"Shit! I blew it. Maybe you could show me where, I fear I've lost my head."

The song was nearly over, and for some reason, The Chess Game was one of the most difficult parts of the show for Virgil. He wasn't sure why, but the fact he'd gotten this far without making one mistake was shocking.

Finally, the music slowed and Virgil glared at Luke. "Whizzer's supposed to make the dinner, be a patsy, lose at chess. Always bravely acquiesce! Clip the coupons, make the dinner, and love him!"

At that moment, one of the stage lights came crashing down and nearly landed right on Virgil's head. The only reason it didn't was because Luke quickly pulled him away.

The audience gasped and some of the people watching stood up in shock to see if everything was alright. Virgil's throat dried up.

He knew what was happening and he needed to stop it.

This was Broadway.

STOP IT.

The audience went silent, waiting to see how Virgil would continue.

Virgil, panicking, took a quick two-second drink of water before turning to his Marvin and scowling. "Oh, goddamnit, Marvin! Look what the fuck you did now!"

Virgil madly gestured to the light that was crashed onto the stage. The glass was shattered but it didn't fly everywhere, so it wasn't dangerous to be a small distance away from.

The audience erupted into cheers and laughter at Virgil's save. Virgil held down a proud, relieved smile to continue the scene.

Remembering where he'd left off, he kept singing as if there wasn't just a huge broken light laying sadly on the extravagant stage.

His voice quivered slightly throughout the rest of the song, and there was one point where a tear spilled out, but he let it happen because he was being handed the suitcase and being broken up with by Marvin at the time.

He would go back on in a few minutes after Making a Home, but he took his time with his mic off to cry and get everything out while everyone but Luke, Hellen, and Valerie were performing.

Valerie and Hellen gave him a hug and Luke whispered encouraging things.

It was almost time for Virgil to go back on, so he put on his brown leather jacket, carried the briefcase in one hand, and walked on.

While one light lit the stage, the one that broke and fell obviously couldn't, so in the darkness, the lesbians from next door carefully and almost silently picked up the pieces together with the help of Marvin and dragged it into the wings.

Virgil belted his heart out to The Games I Play.

He wasn't thinking of Marvin at all when he sang that song.

He was thinking of Declan.

That was when more tears threatened to spill, but he knew from experience that crying and singing at the same time was a skill he could never master.

He panted hard at the end of it, as he did most other nights. This show gave him emotional whiplash to no end, and he thought it already had when he'd seen the 2016 revival cast performing it.

He trudged through the rest of the performance, discouraged that he'd gotten so close to a perfect night.

Maybe there weren't any perfect nights.
