Dancin' Away With My Heart
Based off of the song Dancin' Away With My Heart by Lady Antebellum
I finally asked you to dance on the last slow song. Beneath that moon, that was really a disco ball.
Ward swirled the champagne around in his glass and looked over at Skye. He adjusted his tie and walked up to her, "hello, dear."
She turned around and smiled at him, something he didn't know he missed so much.
She walked up to him and hugged him, "hey. Having fun?"
Ward nodded, but it was a lie and they both knew it. He hated undercover. Although, being undercover at a gala as newlyweds with Skye wasn't so bad. Skye on the other hand, loved undercover missions, even if they were with her old SO turned enemy turned... whatever they were now. They hadn't exactly established what they were yet. Coulson had just said that they needed Ward for a mission so she just went with the flow.
He looked at her, "feel like dancing? I think it's the one thing we actually haven't done yet."
She looked uneasy but nodded and took his extended hand into her own, "I guess I'll give it a try. I'll warn you though, I haven't danced in ages."
He shrugged as he led her to the dance floor, "that's alright. Just follow my lead."
She nodded slowly and swallowed the lump in her throat, "ok, I'm trusting you not to let me fall," she joked.
I haven't seen you in ages, sometimes I find myself wondering where you are.
"So..." Skye started awkwardly after they'd been dancing silently for a short time, "how've you been?"
He shrugged and smirked, "well, mercenaries kind of take what they can get. But I'm not complaining, I've taken a small job working as a body guard and obviously I took this job when Coulson offered."
Skye nodded, "that's good."
"I never thanked you, by the way," he started, "for getting me out of there."
Skye knew exactly where he was talking about. She had altered the handcuffs so that he would be able to get out of them when Coulson handed him over to his brother. She was glad he had done what she told him. She told him to start over and do things right this time. She smiled up at him, "there's no need to thank me."
He raised an eyebrow, "really?"
She nodded, "seeing you're okay and doing well is thanks enough."
I brushed your curls back so I could see your eyes. And the way you moved me was like you were reading my mind.
They had been dancing for a while now, still waiting for the guards to leave so they could break in, but they didn't mind. Skye's head was now on his chest as they swayed silently back and forth to the slow song that was playing. Skye removed her arms from around Ward's neck and wrapped them around his torso instead, so that she was hugging him.
He smiled at his rookie's actions. She finally looked back up at him, "you're happy, right?"
He thought for a moment, "yeah, I am."
She nodded slowly, "good."
"What about you?"
She removed her arms from his torso and looped them around his neck again so it appeared that they were still dancing, "I guess so. I'd be happier if you came back, though..."
Ward's eyes widened, he didn't expect her to want him to come back. He thought she hated him still. Wait a second... he made her happy? He shook his head, "Skye, everyone hates me. I can't go back there."
Her smile fell and she sighed, "yeah, I know you can't. Doesn't mean that I don't want you too, though."
I can't help but wonder if you ever miss me. I haven't seen you in ages, sometimes I find myself wondering where you are.
"Thank you for you help tonight, Ward," Coulson said begrudgingly after the mission was over.
Ward nodded slightly and gave a slight wave in Skye's direction, "guess I'll see you around."
He tried to ignore the few whispers he heard from Simmons and May saying, "hopefully not." He turned around and walked down the base's corridors and towards the exit.
Before he was able to leave, he was spun around by Skye and was engulfed by a pair of arms. He slowly returned the hug.
She finally pulled back a few moments later, "that was me saying not to make yourself a stranger."
He looked at her, "I don't understand."
She sighed and chuckled, "of course you don't, you're a robot. That was me telling you that I forgive you, I understand, and I still really like you. So don't make this the last time I see you." She slipped a small piece of paper into his hand, "this is my burner phone's number." She removed her hand from his and kissed him on the cheek before walking away, "call me when you get a day off!"
And for the first time in a very long time, Ward smiled from ear to ear.
Dancing away with my heart.
