Shattering Glass
“Sungmin, wake up. It’s time for school.” I heard in my sleep. I felt someone’s hand shaking me back and forth. I slow open my eyes to see Rachel peering over me.
“Good morning, Sunshine.” Rachel smiled real wide. I look to her and turn back over with the blanket over my head.
“Give me five more minutes.” I groaned. Rachel let out a breath and replied, “I promised Namjoon we will meet up with him at his house in thirty minutes to walk to school.” I was wake by that point. I pushed the covers off and went to my bag to grab my school uniform.
“I’ll be back.” I said. I walked to the bathroom passing Rachel’s parents. They smiled and said good morning and I did the same. I came into the bathroom, changing into my school uniform, brushed my teeth and hair also washing my face. The bruises seemed to fade a bit now and the cuts are already almost completely healed. After I’m done I walk back to Rachel’s room where she was applying makeup. She turns to me and laughs.
“A little of foundation will smooth out some of these bruises.” She came over and rubbed the foundation till it was evenly distributed on my face. She finished up with eyeliner on my eyes and some powder to finish the look off. This was all new to me, considering I never could afford makeup and didn’t wear it. Rachel took a step back to admire her work.
“Pretty.” she said. After that we grabbed our stuff and headed out the door.
“Hey girls.” Namjoon’s face lit up as Rachel and I approached him outside of his house. Rachel ran up and gave him a hug. I followed by with an awkward side hug, if you could call it that.
“You look pretty.” Namjoon said to me which caught me off guard. Before I could respond, Rachel blurted out, “I did her makeup this morning.” Namjoon grinned.
“You should wear makeup more often.” Namjoon winked at me. I bit my lips as my face turned red. Rachel hit Namjoon in the arm.
“Come on, you're embarrassing her. Let’s just go to school before we're late.” Rachel grabbed Namjoon’s arm and pulled him to walk.
I walked in silence as Namjoon and Rachel cut up together. Rachel in the middle and me on her left side, while Namjoon on her right. Sometimes I do feel they ignore me, like they have this inside joke that I will never get. It frustrates me really. I let out a breath to relieve my stress.
“Why so quiet over there, Sungmin.” I smirk. Oh now he notices me. I keep quiet and bite my tongue to stop from saying anything rude. I do have a tendency to speak my mind when I really shouldn’t. So I simply shrug my shoulders. Namjoon and Rachel just laugh carrying on their conversation.
“Sungmin left her photo at your house. Mind bringing it with you when you come over this afternoon?” Rachel said. Since when was Namjoon coming overa plan? I guess now I have reached the phase of when no one will tell me anything now.
“Oh yeah! I most definitely will.” Namjoon adds, “Hey, Sungmin.” Namjoon trades places with Rachel to walk beside me.
“Cheer up.” Namjoon reaches over and tries to make me smile. I swat away his hand and walk faster.
We reached the school and once I went into the door, I took off away from Namjoon and Rachel. I needed some time away from being ignored. I go to my locker and get the books I need for my first class. I shut my locker to see Namjoon leaning against the locker next to mine.
“You ran off.” Namjoon said in a deep cutting voice. I roll my eyes and turn around to walk off. Namjoon caught my arm and pulled me back around. I look up to see how close I came to him. I blinked a couple times and felt my pulse going up. I took a step back to distance myself from him.
“Sorry.” Was all I could think of. I really didn’t want to start a fight with him in the hallway anyways, so what's the point.
“Then, let’s walk together to our class.” He smiles and grabs my wrist to make sure I won’t try to run away. The only good thing I do like about my school schedule is that I have all my classes with Namjoon and one with Rachel and Namjoon in it. This made me happy because Rachel was never was there to distract Namjoon from talking to me. It was nice to just spend time with just him.
When we got into the classroom, Namjoon lead me through to two desks that were in partners in the back of the room.
“Here?” Namjoon offered. I agreed and sat my stuff down. The teacher starts class and everyone including Namjoon and me, takes their seats. For the time being in the class we work on group projects with our partner.
“I’ll bring all the stuff to make the poster over to Rachel’s house this evening.” Namjoon says.
“Okay, so does that mean I have to do all the researching then?” I added in smartly. Namjoon fakley seems like he's offended.
“I do help on the research!” Namjoon says.
“Yeah sure you do.” I laugh and elbow him in the arm.
“If you want we can go over to my house after Rachel’s and you can watch me work and not get distracted.” I smirked. The thought of Namjoon getting distracted by Rachel made me sick.
“Fine.” I agreed, knowing anyways that this plan will fall through. Namjoon smiled and began to work.
By the time of lunch, I gathered all my belongings and headed to the lunch room. Namjoon went with Rachel to go ask a question about homework with the teacher, so it was just me. I headed down the hallway, alone, stopping by my locker to put all my books in. After I did that, I entered the lunch room.
The lunch line was long and not to mention it was loud in here. I basically hated everyone which made it worse because I just want to stab every annoying last soul in here. I took a breath and waited patiently in the line as I came closer to getting my food. Once I go my food I headed my spot where Namjoon, Rachel and I always eat at. I come over to the empty table and take a seat.
I knew it was going to be agonizing lunch. Just me sitting by myself in a room full of kids that I all hate. How many questions did Namjoon and Rachel really have? Or they probably ditched me. That happens more than you think it does.
Fifteen minutes of eating alone went by and I was startled when I heard a plate hit the table.
“Hey, Sungmin.” I frown at the sight of Namjoon. He takes a seat next to me. Rachel comes and sits on the other side of the table in front of us. When Rachel and Namjoon began to chat up a storm and I stood up, taking my plate with me.
“I got to go. Enjoy your lunch.” I said in a sour tone. I began to walk away as I heard them calling my name out, not looking back once.
Okay you could say I’m am in a bad mood today. I really don’t feel like putting up with anyones crap so I left it alone. So instead of staying with Namjoon and Rachel at lunch, I got up and acted like I had to be somewhere. To be honest I have like thirty minutes to kill before class starts and nothing to do.
I walk outside to the courtyard and breath in the refreshing air to clear my mind. I walk over to an empty bench and lay down on it. As I lay on my back, I look up at the clouds to spot out shapes. I close my eyes and just focus the warmth from the sun hitting my face.
“You look like you need a friend.” I open my eyes to see a shadow of a guy peering over me. I sit up and adjust my eyes to see who it is. A young male, in his school uniform, hands in his pockets with his rich brown hair that swept to the side. I go through my mind if I know this guy or not. I might have seem him in the hallways maybe? But he was never in any of my classes.
“I’m Senior Jin, if you are wondering.” He said. Oh, so thats why he is in none of my classes, he’s a grade older than me.
“Can I sit?” I just nod and move my stuff out of the way. I still haven’t said anything.
“Since I told you my name, can I exchange it for yours, as well as your phone number?” Did he really just hit on me with a cheesy pickup line?
“Sungmin.” I said awkwardly.
“Wow, a pretty name for such a pretty girl.” Jin smiles charmingly. I put my head down to hide my blushing. I have to admit, Jin was a good looking guy. Nice, charming, and has quite the looks. If I wasn’t drooling over Namjoon so much, I may consider having a small crush on him.
Jin bends down and peeks to see my blushing face and replies, “Ah, I didn’t know I could make you blush on the first try.” I giggle and cover my face with my hands. Why am I feeling so bashful all of a sudden...
“Let me see your hand.” Jin says. I peek out from my hands. “What?” Jin reaches into his pocket and pulls out a pen. He slowly grabs my wrist and pulls it towards him. He takes the pen and began to glide the ink on my skin, writing a set of numbers on the top of my hand.
“Your turn.” Jin says after he finishes. He holds up the pen for me to take it along with his hand for me to write down my number. I slowly take the pen out of his hand and scribbled my number down on his palm. Jin smiles wide when I finish.
“Thanks, I should get going now. See you sometime?” I nod as he picks up his stuff to leave.
I breath in one more time the fresh air before I go back into the building. I stand up and grab my stuff. Once I got into the building I headed to my locker to grab my books.
“Hey.” Rachel came up, followed by Namjoon. I made eye contact with Namjoon, making my heart skip a beat.
“Hey." I said as I shut my locker. I have a class with both of them, so it’s no use running off. The only good thing about it is that it was the last class of the day.
“Oh my God, is that a guy’s phone number!” Rachel catches my wrist to see the number printed on my hand.
“No it’s not!” I pull my hand back. Rachel reaches down, to look at the phone number once more. She lets out a loud laugh.
“Yes it is, there’s a name, Jin.” I look at my hand and Rachel was right. Right under the number was in neat cursive the name Jin and a heart in the top right left of his name. I stood there speechless, neverless Namjoon was standing right there hearing all of it.
“Sungmin got game.” Rachel punches Namjoon lightly in the arm. I roll my eyes.
“So what, it’s not like I’m going to call him or anything.” I said, but little did I know, I was blushing bad.
“Aw, look at her Namjoon, she’s blushing. She probably has a crush on him.” I look at Namjoon who smiles ever so slightly. I put both hands on my cheeks to hide my redness.
“No, it’s just really hot in here.” I turn around and head off to my class with Rachel and Namjoon following me.
I came into the classroom and sat down waiting for the boring class to begin. If I didn’t care too much about my grades, I would sleep or even more skip. What am I saying, I’m a straight A student. I know shocking, but doing stuff like homework when I was little kept my mind and attention off of things like my parents.
As class went by, I doodled on my notebook and catching glimpses at Namjoon who was sitting across from me. I admire pretty much everything about him like his deep dyed blonde hair sweeping across his forehead or sometimes I like it when he spikes it up, suits him so well, also his eyes and the way he sees the world and not to mention his smile that makes my heart flutter every time I see it.
I zone back into reality and look at the clock. It is five minutes till school ends and in shock, I didn’t realise how much time I spent daydreaming about Namjoon. The bell the rang and the afternoon announcements came on. I sat, tapping my fingers on the desk, dying to get out of school. Once class was dismissed I got up and walked to Rachel and Namjoon.
“You want to just walk with us to my house?” Rachel asked Namjoon.
“I have to go by the store and my house to pick up a couple things before I come over.” Namjoon winked over at me. I bit my lip as my heart raced. It never gets old.
“Okay that’s fine. See you in a bit.” Rachel went over and hugged Namjoon. I looked away, pretending I didn’t see anything.
“Bye.” I waved to Namjoon, but before I could go, Namjoon put a hand on my shoulder and went in for a hug. I awkwardly wrapped my arms around him and broke away. That was probably the quickest hug I have even experienced.
Rachel and I reached her house finally after a short walk from the school. We walked in, saying hello to her parents and walked up to her room. Rachel shut the door and began to change out of her school uniform.
“Gosh, I hate theses uniforms. They never suit my body type.” Rachel said as she began putting on her regular clothes.
“I like them.” I said. Rachel didn’t reply. She went over to her mirror and began applying touch ups to her makeup and fixing her hair. I went to my bag to pull out a pair of ripped jeans and a hoodie. I changed out of my uniform and put on my clothes, along with putting on my sneakers. I look over at Rachel and wonder why she's fixing her self up even though we are going nowhere.
I sit, waiting for Namjoon to come on Rachel’s bed as Rachel recurls her shoulder length hair. Once she’s done, she sprays on perfume and sits next to me.
“You look all dolled up.” I commented. “Why?”
“Just to waste time.” It took her awhile to say that. I said nothing else. We sat for the rest of the time in silenced air.
“Your friend is here, Rachel!” Rachel’s mom calls. Rachel in a flash, rushes out of her room to the door. I follow behind.
When she reaches the door, she fixes her hair and takes a breath. I don’t understand why she’s being so dramatic. She opens the door to Namjoon smiling brightly. Rachel offers Namjoon to come in.
“Oh you brought flowers!” Rachel said in excitement.
“Yeah, when I was at the store picking up stuff for me and Sungmin’s project, I thought we needed something to brighten the mood.” Namjoon sets all his stuff in the living on the couch. He walks over to me and hands me my family picture I left at his house.
“My picture!” I snatched it out of his grip and hugged it to my chest. I went to go put it in Rachel’s room where my stuff was. When I got back Namjoon looked over at me and smiled. I smiled back feeling full of excitement. I guess it is good that Namjoon came over.
“Rachel, your dad and I are going out for a bit.” Rachel’s parents come out of the kitchen. Rachel says goodbye as her mom and dad leave.
“Sungmin, you are good at picking out beautiful things,” Rachel picks up the flowers off the couch. “Why don’t you go into the kitchen and get a perfect vase for theses flowers.” I don’t know why she's asking me to do this, when she has much better taste in things and most importantly she has her own two legs to walk.
I agree anyways and take the flowers. Rachel smiles and sits next to Namjoon on the couch. They began to talk and cut up. I walk into the kitchen and look in the cabinets for the most beautiful vase I could find. This was a hard choice because Rachel’s mom had a whole collection of vases.
I pull out a couple and examine them to see which one matches best with the flowers. I still hear Namjoon and Rachel in the other room laughing away and talking. It must be nice being Rachel, she’s pretty, has a funny sense of humor and every guy’s ideal type. If she wanted to, she could get Namjoon in a blink of the eye. I don’t understand why she hasn’t done it yet. Maybe it’s because she’s respecting my feelings for him.
In the livingroom, Namjoon and Rachel fell silent. I guess Rachel left to to do something, leaving Namjoon waiting in there. I finally decide on a vase and filled it with water. I placed the flower carefully in the vase and took a step back to admire them. I soon realize that I have been in the kitchen for some time, so I quickly grab the vase with the flowers and walk out of the kitchen to the living room.
I stop in my tracks as I walk into the living room. My eyes go wide and my mouth drops. There, before my eyes was Rachel touching lips with Namjoon on the couch. They seem to be going at it strong with Namjoon cupping her face and then his hands moving to her waist while Rachel wrapped her arm around him.
My body begins to shake, tears swelling up in my eyes and my heart feels like someone took a knife to it. I don’t know whether I should feel angry or sad. All I know is that I can’t move. My body goes numb and all I feel is the delicate vase slipping out of my hands, crashing to the floor.
Rachel jumps and pushes Namjoon away. She looks to me in such a fright and stands up immediately. Namjoon, alarmed, follows where Rachel’s eyes were on. Namjoon turns and we make eye contact. He bit his lip and held in his breath. For me, I’m still unable to move.
“Sungmin… I can explain.” Rachel heads to walk over towards me. I back away from her and head for the door.
“There’s no need for an explanation.” I growled.
“Can’t we just talk about it for a minute.” Rachel runs over and grabs my arm, my hand on the door knob.
“There’s nothing to talk about!” My voice rose. I feel the tears coming on.
“Leave me alone and don’t bother coming looking for me.” I snapped as I pushed Rachel’s hand off my arm. I opened the door, walking out, slamming it hard behind me.
I walked away from Rachel’s house in such anger. I should have known. All the signs, Rachel flirting with Namjoon, Namjoon actly differently around her, not to mention the questionable phone calls and leaving me out most of the time. I’m such an idiot. Not only I was was a third wheel of the friendship, but I was a third wheel of a relationship.
I walked quite a long distanced away from Rachel’s house so they couldn’t follow me. I stopped on the sidewalk and realized I had no where else to go, during this time until my anger cools down, clearing my mind and go back and face them. I pulled out my cellphone and dialed the number on my hand.
