Long Summers and New Jobs
The school year ended to a coming of a hot and miserable summer. Nothing, but staying inside in my air conditioned house, eating as many popsicles as I can.
This summer I’m alone. My plans of fun exciting summer died a long time ago when Jin and I broke up and Namjoon broke the news to me that him and Rachel were going on a cruise together with his family.
It sucked to be honest, and even my mom left me because she found a well paying job with time consuming hours, so it’s just me and me alone. Until the air conditioner broke and I had to call up someone to come over and take a look at it.
“It will take some time to fix, but I will be able to.” I sigh and told the man, which was a close friend of my mom, if you know what I mean, to fix it as soon as possible. The man agreed and began to work on it right away.
I was in my room blasting music to try to cover up the loud construction noises that were going on. I was even dying of the heat. I laid on my floor which seemed to be the coldest spot and sprawled out, bored to death.
Then I got a thought to go out of my hot deadly house and maybe go out and see people. I got up and threw on some shorts and a tank top and ran down stairs, grabbing my backpack with me.
I told the man who was working on the heating and cooling system, that I was going out for awhile and headed out the door.
I took a bus that lead me downtown and let me off at the park. I didn’t even bother going to the park because that just meant, for me, remembering bad memories. I walk passed and see a little new ice cream shop/cafe just around the corner.
When I walk in I order chocolate chip ice cream in a waffle cone and make my way to a seat near a window.
When I finished my ice cream I dug through my backpack and pulled out my laptop, notebook, and a pen. I opened my laptop up and began to search for colleges.
Yes, I know. I'm a little too young to be looking at colleges, but to me thats the only thing that I always wished for, was going to my dream college. Also it’s never too earlier to start looking. So I began my search and wrote down many colleges and information that interested me. For hours I stayed at my spot, researching, looking for study abroads, and enjoying the nice coldness feel in the ice cream shop.
The door opened with a ding and customers walked in to order. On one particular ding, I looked up at the wrong time to see Jin and Jessica walk in together. This wasn’t the first time ever that I have ran into them, but still even if I did get over him, everytime I see him, my heart shots a pain down my chest, painfully throbbing.
I look immediately back down at my laptop and sunk in the chair that I was sitting in, only looking up to them ever so often as the ordered.
Once they ordered and got their ice cream, they found a table, rather close to where I was siting. I kept on looking at colleges and such, until later when they finished up and Jessica got a phone call.
She answered and got up in a panic, only mouthing something to Jin and leaving right after that. Jin sighed and got up to throw away some trash. On his way back from throwing away his trash, I didn’t notice I was staring at him the whole time. He made a glance at me and grinned. I look back down to my notebook, acting as if I was writing something, till he left or so I thought he did.
I jumped at the sound of someone’s hand coming down on the table and taking a seat in front of me. I look up slowly to see Jin sitting of the edge of his seat staring at me.
“Can I help you with something?” I said coldly. Jin just flickered his eyes at me and took a sip from his can of soda he had in his hand. This was the first time we talked to each other since the day of Namjoon’s fight with him.
“No.” Jin smiled out of the edge of his mouth.
“Then leave.” I said sternly and began to work on my stuff, trying my best to ignore him. Jin did a small cocky laugh, reached over and snatched my notebook. from me.
“Hey!” I yelled, catching some customers eyes on us. I reached over the table and tried to get my notebook back, but failed. Jin pulled away and started to look through it.
“Colleges? Really, how pathetic.” Jin continued flipping.
“Why do you are care! You're already in college so I wouldn’t be talking.” I snapped back. Jin’s face turned red with anger and held up my notebook book with hand and the can of soda with another hand.
“Don’t you dare.” I said.
“Try me.” Jin turned the can over and drenched the notebook in Coke. I pulled my laptop off the table from getting wet and screamed. Jin smirked, stood up, only holding the wet notebook with two finger and walked over to the trashcan. he dropped in the trashcan and exited the ice cream shop.
I sat in the seat with my fist clenched. This meant war. Apart of me wants to run after him and beat the hell out of him, but the other part tells my to stay here and cool off.
So, I obey my second choice and walked over to the trashcan and fish out my notebook. I went up to the counter and asked for paper towels. for the next hour it dried my notebook, putting each paper towel in between each paper so the paper won’t stick together and and left the shop.
I walked around a couple of blocks before sitting down at a bench. Usually my anger would of worn down some, but I’m still fired up. So I pull out my phone and call the best person to calm me down, Namjoon.
“Hey, what's the matter?” Namjoon picked up. They only time I would call him was when I was in some deep problems. I took a breath and explained everything and how my anger won’t go away.
“He’s just teasing you after you humminated him at school and no one talked to him for the rest of the semester.” Namjoon sounded tired.
“Yeah, I guess you're right,” I drifted off. “So hows your cruise going?”
“Tolerable, but yet enjoyable.” He said, but I know that last part was a lie. He hates spending time with his family and having to deal with Rachel when she's whinny.
“Awesome.”
“Yeah, hows your summer been?” Namjoon asked.
“Lonely.” I sighed.
“I'm sorry, I promise when I get back I will spend time you. So college eh?” I giggle a little.
“Yeah college. I’ve been looking and planning to apply my last semester of Senior year.” I said.
“That’s great, hope it’s somewhere not to far away from me though..”
“Yeah… Actually I looking at going to study ab-” I was cut off by Rachel’s voice in the background, calling for Namjoon.
“Hey I got to go. Girlfriend is calling. See you when I get back.” Before I can say bye, the line clicked and I was left yet again alone.
The rest of the summer went by really slow, I was mostly staying at home, researching and studying. I later met with Jin once and gave him a piece of my mind and humiliated him yet again, but this time in front of Jessica, which I didn’t care for.
One night I was in my room and something clicked, I will probably will not afford college at the rate I’m at. Scholarships are hard to get into even if you're as smart as me, and thats saying something. I place third in my school ranking on the end of the grade tests, Namjoon being first and some other girl in a lower grade, placing second.
I figured I should get a job and to gather some extra college money when I need it or anything else so I decide to go out for once and look around town.
In town I looked around to many shops and food places, but yet no one was hiring. Until I came across the ice cream shop, with a help wanted sign posted on their window. I smiled and walked in to request for the manger.
“I GOT THE JOB!” I dropped my phone on my bed and ran down stairs. I plowed into my mom and still yelling with excitement that I finally have a full time real job.
“I’m so proud of you!” Mom hugged me gave me a kiss. “When do you start?” Mom asked me.
“I start my training this Wednesday.” I said.
“School starts next week, baby.”
“I know, I know,” I paused. “but I promise I’ll work hard!”
The next couple of days passed and it was already Wednesday, the day I start my new job.
