Chapter Three
"We have a new case." Leah, JJ, Morgan, and Reid looked up as Gideon and Hotch came in, and everyone quickly moved to find chairs. JJ pulled up the pictures on the screen at the front of the room, handing out files to everyone, including Leah.
"Two fires, two families in three weeks. The first family, the Jarvises, all died. Last night, the Cutlers, only one survivor, Charlotte Cutler. She's in critical condition, with burns to over sixty percent of her body." Leah's breath caught in her throat as she opened her file, bile rising in her throat when she saw the charred, blackened bodies.
"This wasn't an accident." Prentiss said, and Leah looked up at her, tearing her eyes away from the haunting pictures.
"Same M.O, no fuses, kerosene, multiple points of origin, and families that were targeted at home, and while they slept, no less." Hotch nodded, as Gideon watched silently, taking a sip of coffee every now and then.
"The Bay area has a serial arsonist." He said, and then Reid spoke up.
"Statistically, 94% of all serial arsonists are male, 75% are white, and few, if any, are ever caught." She smiled slightly, as that exact same thing had just been running through her head. Prentiss looked at him, her brow furrowed.
"Few? You don't know the exact percentage?" She and Reid spoke up at the exact same time.
"Sixteen percent." She looked at him, blushing, and let him continue.
"Those sixteen percent set about thirty plus fires before they were ever apprehended. And I was trying to be more conversational." The corner of Emily's mouth turned up slightly, and she nodded.
"Oh. It's not working." Spencer looked down, reminding Leah of a kicked puppy, and Morgan sighed, leaning back.
"Looks like there's two of them now.... And you've got some competition, Pretty Boy." Leah spoke up again, her cheeks flushing.
"This is unusual, though. Most serial arsonists don't start the fires with the intent to inflict harm. Any injuries or death caused by their fires... Those are accidental. It's not about violence for them." Gideon nodded, and she saw a tiny flash of approval cross his face.
"For this one, it is. It's also about power. They get to see the destructive force of these fires.... Watch the chaos. For them, fire is just a substitute for sexual release." Garcia looked up, confused.
"So... if these guys don't get laid, they start fires?" Gideon looked over, nodding slightly.
"Or, in this case, burn entire families to death." Reid sighed, and Leah felt tears pricking at the corner of her eyes, but she forced them back. Prentiss looked up.
"No statistics?" Reid shook his head, and Gideon interrupted.
"He's one of a kind. There are no statistics on this guy." She spoke up again, looking at Gideon.
"Three weeks ago, a serial arsonist escalated into a serial killer, and his weapon is fire. The question is why. He had to have had a trigger, somethings that set him off into this extreme of an escalation. He probably lost his primary sexual outlet about three weeks ago." Hotch nodded.
"What about the victims?" JJ looked at the file, shaking her head.
"No connection beteen the two families, but witnesses did put an unidentified late model gold sedan near both houses around the time of the fires." He nodded.
"Run the car, and Garcia, run the victims through your systems, see if you can find anything. If there's any connection, we need to find it, and fast. Reid and Leah, victimology. Prentiss and I will go see Charlotte Cutler, see if there's any possibility that she can tell us anything. Wheels up in twenty." They all dispersed, Leah heading to her newfound desk to retrieve her already packed go bag. On the flight there, Leah pulled out her laptop, finding a new video message from Luke, Courtney, and their son, Jude. The rest of the team was sitting up closer to the front, so Leah slipped her earbuds in, playing the video.
"Hey, Leah. I hope you're doing well. Mum and dad just told me that Joel proposed to Dinah last night, and I figured that you would want to know before they sent out invitations. Courtney, Jude and I also have some news for everyone." Jude's head popped up, and he grinned.
"Hi, awnt Weah! Dada say you gonna 'ave to come back soon to see us. I wanna see you, awnt Weah." Then, she heard Courtney.
"Hi, Leah! Hope the new team is going well. Let us know if you're ever back down here and have time. Jude, can you get the picture, please?" He disappeared, and Courtney smiled, appearing in the picture. Jude returned, holding an ultrasound in front of the picture.
"Mama gonna have a baby!!" Luke and Courtney laughed, and Courtney smiled.
"Yeah... I'm pregnant!! We wanted to tell you first, and ask you to be the godmother for this little one as well. Call us when you can! Love you!"
She held back a laugh, grinning, but jumped when JJ and Reid moved over beside her.
"Oh! Didn't see you." JJ smiled, looking at the screen.
"Family?" Leah, nodded, pulling up a family picture, showing them the picture that had her, her parents, all her siblings, and all of her nieces and nephews.
"My twin brother, sister-in-law, and my nephew. They just told me that she's going to have a new baby, and they asked me to be the godmother again." JJ smiled, and Reid grinned.
"That's wonderful, congratulations. How many siblings do you have?" She smiled.
"Seven. My younger sister, Libby, and I are the only ones not in a serious relationship. My older brother, Joel, just proposed to his girlfriend, so he's getting married sometime soon." Reid tilted his head slightly.
"He's the one you don't get along with." She nodded. They kept talking softly, their relationship quickly growing stronger. She may not have had a good relationship with her brother, but maybe she and her teammates could be a second family.
