All Stars: Chapter 38

"What?" Allie asked after an era of silence, feeling her heart drop down to her feet. She placed a shaking hand against the cheerful yellow wall that framed the entrance to her bedroom.

"I'm sorry, Allie," Tobin's mother, Cindy, whispered through the phone.

The blonde midfielder could hear the racking sobs of her now, ex girlfriend's mother shaking against the ear piece. In turn, a tear fell from the corner of Allie's eye, but she wiped it immediately, determined not to cry.

"Thank  you, Allie," a voice said, and the mid realized she was still talking to the woman.

"Oh... I'm sure she'll be fine."

Allie hung up. Her fingers tightened and her hand formed into a fist. Screaming, Allie looked at her phone before she chucked it at the opposite wall, the device cracking and going black with a little sizzle noise.

"FUCK!" she shouted, punching the wall next to her. Ouch.

She recoiled, whimpering slightly, and sank to her knees, clutching her hand. "Mommy..." she blubbered, tears streaming down her face freely now. An urgent knock sounded on the wooden door Allie was leaning against and she jumped, her shoulder hitting a drinking glass on the table next to her and sending it to the ground with a crash.

"Al?" a voice, her younger brother Patrick, called from the other side. "Uh... is everything okay?" he asked, his voice hesitant and nervous.

Allie quieted down, wiping her eyes with the sleeves from her baggy sweatshirt. "No- not really," she sniffled, waiting to see what her sibling would do.

Patrick paused. "What's up?"

"Pat, could you drive me to the Basking Ridge General Hospital? I have to be there as soon as possible."

Luckily for Allie, her seventeen year old brother didn't prod for answers and simply ignored Allie's puffy eyes and tear stained cheeks. Occasionally, the senior would cast quick glances that he thought went unnoticed by his older sister (she observed every single one, but kept quiet).

Allie's head spun as the beaten truck pulled up to a huge grey building with the words 'Basking Ridge General Hospital' pronounced upon the front in red block letters. Ambulances rushed through the large parking lot and the constant sirens made Allie flinch, memories of her father's accident sped through her mind and she could tell Patrick was having similar thoughts.

"Text me when you need a ride?" Patrick asked tightly, his face contracted with a need to leave the place.

Allie nodded, turning away from the little man and walking inside past a sobbing family of three that resembled the way the Long's had stood four years ago.

A young man stood behind the front desk with a name tag that read Jonny. He smiled at her upon seeing the distress itched into every centimeter of her face and she longed to punch every ounce of happiness out of him, but refrained to do so as she was supposed to act like a responsible adult.

"Um... I'm here to see Tobin Heath?" she asked, peering around the corner where she had sworn Tobin's parents had been standing minutes earlier. Jonny scooted himself to the right a few feet until he was in Allie's view.

"I'm sorry ma'am, only family is allowed to visit Miss Heath at the moment. I'm sure you could come by tomorrow and see her," he said, his smile not altering.

Allie glared at him, the corners of her mouth dipping into a deep frown.

"Jon, let her in."

Allie's head snapped behind her to see an equally aged man in similar white robes to Jonny, who instead bore the name tag of José. José looked at the mid sympathetically before turning to his opened mouth colleague.

"But Jo-"

"Look at her Jon- she's a pretty young woman, who is obviously very close to having a breakdown. You should let this beautiful woman pass."

Allie stared at the man awkwardly. "Uhm... I'm gay," she blurted out, staring in-between the two as if it were a problem.

Both chuckled. Allie stared at them in confusion.

"So are we," Jonny explained, looking at José lovingly. Oh. That explained it, Allie thought.

"Can I go see Tobin Heath now?" she asked, praying they would let her pass.

The two exchanged a glance and Jonny shrugged. "Room 14. To the right, down the hall," he pointed to the spot where Allie now knew Tobin's parents had been.

The blonde nodded in thanks, scooting past the couple and speeding down the hall, where she stopped outside of the room marked with '14: Heath, Tobin Powell'. She knocked twice before the door swung open and the girl was nearly suffocated in a tight hug. Cindy, Tobin's mom, pulled back and patted Allie's cheek endearingly.

"You're an amazing person, Allie," Cindy sniffled, looking behind herself at her husband and nodding, who understood the signal to leave the room. Tobin's dad clapped Allie on the back and smiled a little at her through his silent tears. The two made their way out of the room and Allie looked down, feeling Tobin's stare rest upon her.

"Hey."

Allie looked up and gave an awkward chuckle. "Hey yourself."

"Come here," Tobin said from her bed, patting the chair her father had been occupying only minutes earlier. Allie shuffled to the brunette's bedside table and took a seat in the chair.

Tobin broke the silence. "I'm sorry."

Allie could feel a lump in her throat forming. "I'm sorry too. I- I didn't think us would lead to... this..."

Tobin nodded in agreement. "Al, don't think it's your fault I did this. 'Cause it isn't. It was my decision to make the cuts in the bathroom store, my decision to even go and buy the razor," she paused. "I'm sorry."

Allie stared at her. "I bet you've said that a lot already." She didn't realize how cold and mean her voice sounded before the words came out. "So- sorry. I didn't mean it like that," she added, hoping Tobin wouldn't get mad at her.

Instead, the brunette smiled. "I know. I think we're both sorry. We've both been acting immature for the last month. Not to say that whatever was between us was an act of immaturity, because it wasn't. Al, what we had was real."

Allie gulped, wiping a tear from her eye. She looked at the floor. "It was," she added quietly.

Tobin's gaze didn't break from the blonde's downcast face. "It was the realest thing I've probably ever felt. But it wasn't right. Al, it was real, it was true, it was good. I liked you. I love you so much that I hope you understand that right now, I'm doing what's best for both of us."

"Are you saying..."

"Can we be friends?" Tobin asked, her voice changing into its usual soft tone. "Allie, can we pweease be frewds?" she said, mimicking a baby.

Allie laughed, nodding. "Yes, Toby. We can be the best of friends the world has ever seen."

The mid's face lit up.

"Tobin."

"Yes, Al?" Tobin asked, her gaze settling on the blonde.

Allie smiled. "Call Christen."

She stood up and left the room.
