All Stars: Chapter 10

They were supposed to meet at 4:30. It was 4:41.

Christen was alone.

She wondered if maybe Tobin had forgotten. Or didn't want to come anymore. Either way, Christen would be hurt. And hurt doesn't always fade. If she didn't turn up, it would be officially the fourth time she was abandoned on a "date". But it wasn't a date, was it? Tobin had just asked Christen if she wanted some food. It was anything special.

These thoughts swirled through the brunette's complex mind as she absentmindedly took her hair out of her pony tail and ran a hand through her hair.

"It looked great," a voice called from behind her. Christen sighed in relief and pleasure at the same time.

Tobin was dressed in ripped black jeans, a light grey tee shirt and a black snapback.

She looked so... Perfect. Yes, Tobin Heath was perfect. From her chipped toe nail polish to the way her eyes lit up when she was excited.

"You look nice," Tobin complimented Christen, who was jerked back to reality. Christen blushed, but tried to hid it behind her hair. Tobin giggled. Christen had never heard her giggle before.

"You too," she replied. "Can we go?"

"We can take my car," Tobin said, gesturing to a red truck parked outside the dorm.

Minutes later, Tobin swung around to the passenger side of the vehicle and clicked open Christen's door.

"You've been to FroYo?" Tobin asked, grinning. Christen shook her head no.

"We didn't have any in Chicago."

Tobin stared at her in disbelief, "You're kidding." Christen shook her head again and scrambeled out of the truck. The two walked inside the shop and Tobin picked up two cups and handed one to the forward.

"These are the flavors," she explained, gesturing to the bright signs that displayed the names in white lettering.

The duo spent a moment analyzing them before Christen smiled and beelined to the strawberry, filling her cup. Behind her, Tobin took so long deciding, Christen had already topped hers with three strawberry slices. She was waiting in line patiently, reaching into her pocket. Tobin, who had been studying her friend this whole time, realized she was expecting to pay.

Speeding along, Tobin dropped some chocalate FroYo on the floor but ignored it and quickly doused hers in heath bar and bobos.

"Chris, I'm paying," Tobin said, grabbing the forward's arm in line.

Christen frowned. "But you drove!" she protested. Tobin rolled her eyes but let her pay.

The older girl followed Christen out of the shop. "We should probably head home," she decided, flicking a piece of hair behind Tobin's ear as her hazel eyes drifted up to the darkening sky. Tobin looked up as well.

"Storm?" she questioned.

Christen nodded, "It will only get darker. Seriously. We should get back to the truck."

A grumble of thunder made them both jump. Tobin's breathing increased and Christen looked over at her. The midfielder was pale, making her tattoos jump out against her shoulder blades. Rain was coming down hard on them now, and her flimsy tank top was soaked. Christen forced herself not to look at her friend's chest for her sake.

"Do you want me to drive?" Christen asked, raising her voice so Tobin could hear her over the roar of the storm. Through the darkness, Christen could make out a nod and she made her way to the driver's side of the car. Once inside safely, she rolled up the windows and tried to dry out the polyester car seat. Taking a deep breath, Christen started the engine.

"You okay?" she asked casually. Tobin didn't respond.

"Are you scared of storms?" Christen asked again, looking up this time. Tobin nodded shyly.

"Tobs, it is okay to be afraid. Storms are very scary. But we are safe in a car. If lightning were to hit us, the electricity would go all around the truck, but the metal roof and doors would keep the occupants, us, safe and sound."

This seemed to calm the older girl down, who's breathing slowed as she closed her eyes.

"Can we put the radio on?" she asked in a restrained voice. Christen did as Tobin requested, turning the channel to a pop station.

"It's a beautiful mornin', ahhh
I think I'll go outside a while
And jus' smile
Just take in some clean fresh air, boy
Ain't no sense in stayin' inside
If the weather's fine an' you got the time
It's your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way
It's a beautiful mornin', ahhh
Each bird keeps singin' his own song
," Christen started to sing along with the radio. This had the desired effect; a faint smile was starting to light up Tobin's face as she listened.

"There will be children with robins and flowers
Sunshine caresses each new waking hour
Seems to me that the people keep seeing
More and more each day, gotta say, lead the way
It's okay, wednesday, thursday, it's okay
Monday, wednesday, friday, weekday, ah ah ohhh
..."

The song slowly finished and by then, the truck had pulled up outside of the duo's dorm.

Christen parked and turned off the ignition.

"Tobin, we're here," she said, gently shaking the sleeping girl awake.

"Tobs."

"Tobin."

The midfielder's eyes shot open. "Whaaa...?"

Christen had to laugh. "We're here. Come on, we should go inside. We're both soaked to the bone." Tobin looked down at her body. "Oh yeah," she said, as if just realizing it, "we're wet."

Christen pulled a disgusted face. "Ew."

Tobin laughed at her own joke.
