It had been fifth year when Harry had broken up with Ginny.
He had known he was gay since fourth year, but he was far too terrified to admit it to himself or to anyone.
He had finally allowed himself to admit the words out loud, shouting them at her as she asked him why he was breaking up with her.
This had been met with silence, and then Ginny had burst into tears, hugging him tightly and telling him she loved him no matter what.
She told him she was in love with Luna.
They had spent many nights after that gossiping about their secret. Ginny would blush and talk for hours about how Luna had kissed her, and Harry would go on about how beautiful Cedric Diggory was, and how had I not noticed it sooner?
When they went away for the summer, Harry promised to write to her at least once a week, and demanded updates on Luna.
When they got back for their sixth year, Dean and Seamus announced that they had gotten together at the beginning of summer, and had been together for two months.
This had opened Harry and Ginny to a new world. After getting express permission from Luna, Ginny announced her relationship to the school in the form of kissing Luna right in the middle of the Great Hall.
A week later, Harry let the press run wild with the news that he was gay.
Ron had had a fit that Ginny and Luna and the bloody press had gotten to know before him. Hermione had hugged Harry so tightly that he could barely breathe. Dean and Seamus called him an inspiration, and he told them that they were his.
Two weeks later, they had gotten news of the attacks.
Death Eaters had gone rampant, destroying many shops in Diagon Alley, attacking Muggles, destroying lives. Voldemort was alive, and he was aiming to kill once again.
They were told to focus on school, that the Aurors were taking care of it.
No one believed this.
Cedric Diggory made it his job to check on students throughout the day, hugging people and telling them everything was okay, allowing people to talk to him about problems, and being an amazing person overall.
It was around this time Harry realized he was falling in love with him.
Dean and Seamus checked up on each other between each class, before bedtime, and each morning. They promised that they would be careful, be safe.
A month later, Seamus was dead.
He had gone to Hogsmeade to get flowers for Dean.
Dean blamed himself.
Two days later, Cedric had come up to Harry, brown eyes filled with something Harry couldn't recognize.
He shifted side to side, as the words Will you meet me at the Great Lake at lunch? I have something to tell you, spilled from his lips.
Harry had smiled brightly and agreed, butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
Cedric hadn't been at the Great Lake.
The next day, he was presumed dead.
Harry never knew what he wanted to tell him.
Four days later, Hermione broke up with Ron.
We're in war, she had said. War is the worst time to be in a relationship. You have the most to lose.
Promise me when it's over, you'll be my girlfriend again, Ron had pleaded.
Hermione's eyes were filled with tears when she responded.
Ron, if we make it through this, I'll be your wife.
Two days later, Hermione Granger was dead.
She had been trying to get to her parents' house, to Obliviate them and send them away for safety.
No one had told them the news yet.
The next day, Fred and George, in an attempt to lighten the mood, were teasing Ginny about her hair.
Pippi Longstocking! they cheered, laughter erupting from their mouths. Anne of Green Gables!
Any other day, Ginny would have fired back. But instead, so overwhelmed from the events of the week, she had simply run away, her path to the Quidditch pitch clear.
Fred and George went looking for her.
They never found her.
Ginny Weasley was proclaimed dead the next day.
They would never forgive themselves.
Another two days later, Nevillle was asking Professor Sprout about their newest project. She had told him she would go to the greenhouses and retrieve the project they would be breeding.
She never came back.
Neville had anxiety attacks every time he went in the greenhouses.
A week later, Padma and Parvati Patil were having an argument about something stupid. Irritated, Parvati had stormed off, ignoring Padma's shout of be careful!
No one knew where she had gone, only that she hadn't returned.
Padma couldn't remember her last words to her sister.
