Chapter 2

Caleb's P.O.V

Depa parked the car in a hidden area in the poor section so no one would find it. "Stay here and I'll be right back," Depa told me and got out of the car. I watched as she rounded the corner and disappeared. I wanted to help but didn't want to intrude if it was a serious situation.

   Bang!

I jumped at the sound then it sounded like a war zone. A bunch of firing guns, yelling, and explosions. I couldn't see what was going on but I could hear it crystal clear. Something big was going on and I needed to move or I might as well be dead. I unlocked the car and slowly looked in both directions before sneaking to the corner that Depa disappeared around.

I peeked around the corner to see a full out battle between the poor section and Depa, against.........the clones! I was really confused at the moment and wondered why the clones were attacking. The clones seemed so nice back at the station and now they look like they are trying to kill innocent people. But why? What has the poor section done to deserve this and betray a fellow officer.

I jumped back with my heart racing when a bolt almost hit me. I looked at the part of the home that was chipped off by the bolt. It was small but it could still have been deadly if I didn't move. I peeked around to corner again to see the continue to rage on.

I was pulled back with an arm around my chest and a hand covering my mouth. "Freeze, you are under arrest in the name of the Empire," a clone said as I struggled in his grip. I tried to yell for help but was muffled out by the clone's hand. The clone dragged me away but I kept fighting back making it harder for him.

"Let him go!" I heard the familiar voice of my mother figure yell. My heart skipped in joy. I saw her holding a gun at the clone or at least trying not to aim at me. "Freeze, in the name of the Empire," the clone said to Depa. She carefully aimed the gun and shot the clone in the leg. He screamed in pain and his grip on me loosened. I got out of the grip and ran over to Depa.

"Are you ok?" Depa asked me and I nodded. Depa sighed in relief then gave me a stern look, "I told you to stay in the car." "If I stayed in there then I would of still been found or killed," I replied. She calmed down and said, "We'll talk about this later but for now stay close."

"Ok," I said and we ran behind the small huts taking cover from the clones. "Why are the clones attacking the poor section and you?" I asked. Depa looked around the corner then over at me with no reply. She loaded the gun then gestured for me to follow. "Who is the Empire?" I asked but again, Depa didn't answer.

"What did the poor section do to make the clones do this?" I asked still no answer. We just kept hiding around houses and peeking around corners until it was safe to repeat the task. I finally had enough of the silence. "Why aren't you answering my questions? Did I do something wrong? Are you mad at me? Why are you ignoring me?!" I shouted with anger.

My anger evaporated when I saw the look of sadness on Depa's face. She put the gun in her holster and put her hands on my shoulders looking me straight in the eye. "I'm afraid," she admitted, "I'm afraid of you and other innocent people getting hurt. I don't know what has gotten into the clones or who this Empire is. I'm just as confused and shaken as you are. All I know and can do right now is get you and everyone else to safety." My eyes soften even more and I looked at the ground.

"I'm sorry," I apologized. "It's fine," Depa said, "Can you trust me to get us both out of here without answering questions?" Trust. I used to have a horrible time trusting a person but Depa as earned my trust the day she saved me. Not just from the kidnapper but also from the streets and other adoptions. "Yes, I trust you," I said seriously. Depa nodded and pulled out her gun from her holster. "Then let's help and get people out of here," she said.

Slowly but surely, one by one, Depa and I gathered adults and children alike and had them follow us to the plaza. "Stay here until everything is clear to come back," Depa told the group. Everyone nodded or said, "okay's" then Depa and I left to get more people.

As we were running to hide behind a hut, I saw the form of a child laying still on the ground. Next to the body was a worn out stuffed animal that was getting covered in blood. I quickly averted my eyes away from the horrifying image. It was just a little child. Who in there right mind hurt or even kill a child? The thought sent shivers down my spine at the cold-bloody murder.

Depa and I rounded a corner and got one more group before heading back to the plaza. "Freeze, in the name of the Empire!" Five clones said at the same time raising their guns at us. We hid behind the huts as the clones started to fire at us. Depa took down four of them easily but the last one she hesitated on.

"What's wrong?" I asked. "That's Rex," she said sadly then changed into determined look. Depa stepped out from behind the hut and held her gun out at Rex. Is she crazy?! "Freeze in the name of the Empire," Rex said. "Rex, fight it!" Depa yelled, "Whatever happened to you, fight it! This isn't who you are! Remember me your partner, Depa Billaba."

The clone lowered his gun slightly and Depa lowered hers that it aimed at the ground. The air between the two was tense and everything was silent. The clone raised his gun and so did Depa.

Bang!

One shot was fired but it was long before one body fell. I stared in horror as Depa laid on the ground with blood quickly draining from her stomach.

I felt like I couldn't move like my whole world has just been flipped upside down. "MOM!" I yelled sprinting over and falling to my knees next to my mother figure. "Mom, please," I said my voice cracking ignoring the screams of the group that we were trying to escape with.

She looked over at me with a painful look but soon turned it into a smile. "Ssshhh, it's ok," she cooed and I couldn't help but cry. "Please don't leave me," I begged as tears trailed down my face and fall to the ground. "I need you," I added.

"I love you, Caleb. More than you would ever know," Depa said smiling with her own tears sliding down her face. "I love you too mom," I said losing hope. "Freeze, in the name of the Empire!" A group of clones chorused. "Run, Caleb run and don't look back," Depa said and I shook my head no. "No, I'm not leaving you," I said. "If you don't go then you will die if you stay," Depa told me.

"I'd rather die than leave you," I said with no regret. "I don't want to see you die Caleb. Please, run for me," Depa pleaded. I was stuck and didn't know what to do. "Caleb, run now, go!" Depa yelled when she was looking behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see a clone walking over to me. "Freeze, in the name of the Empire!" He said.

I looked back at Depa to see her with pleading eyes. I stood up and saw a smile form on her face. "Run Caleb," Depa said and I did just that leaving behind my mother. I left her for dead. I feel so lost that I don't pay attention to where I'm going. I honestly didn't care where I ended up as long as it is away from there.

I tripped over something and landed in a puddle of mud. I looked around to see that I am in the forest and it was dark. I stood up and heard thunder in the distance. I scanned the area and saw a cave. Slowly, I made my way over to the cave and sat up against the cold wall as it started to rain. I honestly didn't care if it was cold or not. I would of still felt cold physically and mentally.

I made sure that the cave didn't have any creatures in it then sat in the front of the cave watching the rain fall. The weather was accurate for today since I'm feeling like it. Gloomy and depressed.....empty even. I looked through the trees to see a silhouette in the trees. I squinted my eyes to see what it was but gave up and laid on the ground to see if I could sleep.

I never got sleep that night. Of course, how could you sleep when the only person that cares about you was dead? The good news was that the rain stopped. The bad news was, I have no idea where I am. I'm lost in the dangerous forest with nothing to eat or drink. I couldn't go back to Lothal either but there was another place I could go to. Coruscant City, located on the other side of the forest.

If I could survive this forest and find the river that will take me to the city then maybe I could have a surviving chance! It was a risky plan but it was the only one I had. I gathered mud and still healthy leaves that wouldn't crumble. Depa showed me how to weave things so making a cloak wasn't difficult.

From now on, I'm not Caleb Dume.

I slung the clock around me and put it on when it dry.

   I'm Kanan Jarrus.

I started my way through the dense trees in hope of finding the river with a blank face.

   I'm on my own.
