Chapter 16
*a week later...*
Kanan's P.O.V
Hera and I are finally together. I felt like the happiest person in this crummy city. Though, I still was cautious of Hera's well-being. I didn't want anyone else that I love get killed again. So every time Hera goes somewhere without me, I tend to worry...a lot.
I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at the clock. It was time to go. So I grabbed my stuff and left the pawnshop, then made my way to the bar. Hera was standing at the front door as I walked up to her.
"Hey," I greeted and she looked over giving me a warm smile.
"Hello to you too," she said as we began to walk home.
There was a nice silence between the two of us besides the bustling city that surrounded us. I heard a scream and looked over to see an old man getting beat up by troopers. I was about to go over there when something grasped my hand. My eyes went down to see Hera holding it so I looked up into her eyes.
"Some fights....we can't always get involved with," she said sadly. To my displeasure, Hera was right into not getting involved with it. The troopers are absolutely stupid but tough as nails. If I got involved, Hera and I would get arrested for getting in the way.
I sighed and slung an arm around Hera's shoulders, guiding her away from that place. A little while later, some weight came onto my left shoulder. My head twisted to see Hera laying her head on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry we couldn't do anything," she said guilty.
"It's fine, you were right to stop me from getting involved. We would have been toast and thrown away in a cell," I said.
"Like when you make toast and throw it in the trash," she said laughing a bit.
I rolled my eyes with a grin pastured on my face.
"Sometimes, you know me to well," I said, "but that's why I love you."
I felt Hera kiss my cheek then said, "I love you too."
We made it to the apartment and entered what we called home. It was getting dark out so I'm glad we made it cause you never know what creeps are out during the night.
When we made it in, I locked the door as Hera made her way to the kitchen to make supper. I followed her and did the one thing that could be down with my skills. Setting the table and pouring our drinks.
About a half an hour later, the food was done and the table was set with our drinks. We ate and chatted until deciding to watch a movie.
Half way into the movie, there was a loud knock at the door. Hera paused it as I walked over to the door and looked through the peek hole. There was an unfamiliar man standing their but something didn't feel right about him.
"Who is it?" Hera asked behind me making me jump. I held my chest with one hand and bent over with my other hand on my knee.
"You scared me," I complained whispering.
"Sorry," she apologized then the knocks were more vicious this time.
"I know your in there!" The man's voice bellowed with a slight slur. He must be drunk.
"Oh no," Hera said paling with wide eyes. I looked at her confused as she looked through the peek hole.
"How the heck did he find me?" She muttered to no one in particular.
"You know who that is?" I said giving her a questioning look.
"I-it's my father," she said and now I was the one shocked. Hera told me her father started to get addicted to drugs after his wife died. Now, he could be a very threat to the two of us like being under a drunk spell.
"Open up!" The man bellowed again, "or I will take this door off its hinges!"
"Let him in," Hera ordered and I gave her a 'are you kidding me' look.
"This is not the time and place to mess around, Caleb," she said. This must be very serious if she is using my real name. I nodded and unlocked the door opening it to reveal a delirious man. He looked horrible with a beard that went down to his chest, dirty and torn clothes, and no hygiene for who knows how long.
"What happened to you?" Hera said in disbelief.
"The real question missy is what hap-pened to you," the man slurred walking into the apartment. I stood back as to not disturb the conversation between the two.
"What do you think?!" Hera yelled, "You were drunk and through a bottle at me. I knew that I had to get out of there before you could do something worse!"
She panted after her speech and a few tears glistened her green eyes.
Yet, her father had a different reaction then expected. He punched her then yelled, "You do n-ot talk back to-to your father l-like that missy. Now let's go home!"
"Never!" Hera yelled and I couldn't help but get in the middle of the two, literally.
"Stop it! She said that she doesn't want to go back with you and I can see why. You're just going to abuse her," I said glaring at the man.
"Wait....I know you," Hera's father slurred and now I was confused.
"You're the one that killed my wife!" The man yelled and tried to punch me but I ducked.
"I didn't kill anyone," I denied cause it was true. Even if I had a terrible if up until meeting Depa then Hera, I had never once thought of killing a person.
"Oh yes you did. I never forget a face," the man said and tried to throw a chair at me. Suddenly, a bat collided with his head and was knocked out for now. I sighed in relief when seeing Hera with the bat.
"Is it true?" Hera asked me.
"Is what true?" I asked confused once again.
"Did you kill my mother?" She asked and I have her a look in disbelief.
"No, I never killed your mom. I think he has someone else confused with me," I said.
"Why would you ask me that? Don't you trust me?" I asked.
"Yes, I trust you. I just wanted to hear the truth come from you and not a drunk man," she said dropping the bat. Hera ran over and engulfed me in a hug and I hugged her back.
"Alright," I said that things were almost over.
"So...what are we going to do with your dad?" I asked Hera.
"I think I have an idea," she said, "the troopers."
"Are you sure you want your father to go with those walnuts for brains?" I asked.
"It's best for everyone," she said.
I looked over at Hera's father to see him standing then start running towards us. I quickly picked Hera up and got out of the way of the rampaging man. Hera and I looked up to see the man fly through the window.
The two of us stood and ran over to the window and looked out it to see Hera's father laying on the ground still. Blood began to spill from the back of his head.
I turned Hera away from the scene and held her in my arms. I could feel my shirt getting damp and muffled sobs. Soon, Hera fell asleep and I laid her on the couch. I called the hospital for help and began to analyze the man. The doctors said that he died right when a piece of glass found its way into his brain.
I thanked the doctors as they took the body away. I went back into the apartment and carried Hera to her bed. I tucked her in then was about to leave when I heard a small voice.
"Kanan..." It called and I turned to see a sleepy Hera awake.
"Can you stay with me?" She asked.
I smiled warmly at her and walked back over getting under the covers. "Yeah," I said slinging an arm around her shoulders pulling her closer. Hera laid her head on my shoulder and soon fell asleep. Soon I joined her after sleep took over.
