Chapter 10
Kanan's P.O.V
I slumped over the counter with my head in the palm of my hand, shoulder resting on the cool surface. It was a slow-going day here at the pawnshop with barely any customers. The hours past as if they were days.
'Is this what it feels like to be in school. If it is, then I sort of feel bad for the rich...sort of,' I thought. I looked at the clock to see that I had a half an hour left before leaving. This was going to be awhile so I go and restock some shelves. Before I knew it, it was time to go. Relief filled me as I locked up the shop and headed home. On the way, I made a pit stop at the bar and waited for Hera.
Once she was ready, the both of us left the building and walked home. "So what should we have tonight?" Hera asked me.
"I don't know," I said then started to think when suddenly a scream filled the air. Hera and I looked at each other before taking off to find where the scream came from. The same scream of pain came again but this time down an ally. About four boys a bit younger than me surrounded a small child kicking him or her.
"Hey!" I yelled mad and getting the attention of the four boys.
"What are you doing?" Hera said with anger rising in her voice.
"What does it look like?" One of the boy's said, "We are making this poor Emile get what he deserves." A growl came through my clenched teeth as I said, "What would be the reason for hurting a defenseless child?"
"What's it to you? Aren't you a rich class like all of us or are you a trader?" The oldest and probably the leader of the group said. "I'm neither," I said and out of rage punched the leader square in the nose. "Kanan!" I heard Hera yell.
"Scram!" I yelled at them and they took off without thinking twice leaving the child with us. Once they were all gone, I calmed down and knelt down to the hurt boy. "Are you ok?" I asked and he shook his head 'no.' I could tell that he was scared of me by looking into his big teal eyes.
"Hey, it's ok. We poor class got to stick together," I said even though I knew Hera could hear me. After this, she is probably going to realize how much trouble I am and kick me out. At least I helped this child out and let a smile grace his lips.
"Hera?" I said looking over my shoulder and at her. I sighed when I seen her face molted into a disbelief. "I'll explain later but can you help him?" I asked. She snapped out of her trance then got to work with the child.
"Thank you," the little boy said than went on his way. Hera stood up herself and began to walk back to the apartment without looking at me. "Hera," I said and she turned around sharply with anger. "You are from the poor class and never told me!" She shouted.
I looked at the ground a bit hurt. I never seen her so anger before but deserved it none the less. "I told you it was a touchy subject," I said, "It still is."
"Still, you didn't have to give me your whole life story. I just wanted to know what class you were from," she said more calm this time yet the hurt didn't leave. "Yeah, well if I told you, would you have treated me for me or like what those boys did to that child?" I asked and Hera went silent.
She sighed then looked up at me, "I'm sorry."
"Well-wait what?" I said surprised.
"I'm sorry," she said, "You're right, I probably would have treated you differently. I never knew any poor people before except..."
Hera looked down at the ground but I saw the pain in her eyes. "Expect what?" I asked gently.
I heard her sniff then say, "Except for the one that murdered my mother."
My eyes widen in realization. No wonder she was so mad, she could have been living with someone that could of killed her. "I'm sorry too, I should of told you what class I was from," I said laying a hand on her shoulder.
"L-Let's just go home," she said.
"I still can live with you after everything that just happened," I said shocked.
"Kanan, I got to know you for you. You aren't dangerous like I thought of all poor people were like since my mother. Now that can change and maybe we can make our differences between our two classes someday," Hera said with a confident smile.
"There's the Hera I know," I said smiling back then slung my arm around her shoulders. "Let's go home," I added as we walked out of the ally and towards our home.
