Ch.10 Thunderstorm

~Y/n pov~

Thunder rumbled and rain dropped from the sky.

At first it was light but it soon became heavier, soaking us all.

I shivered slightly.

Gyeong-su held me closer to try and keep me warm.

I'm so tired. I just want to sleep.

I flinched as thunder struck again.

Is this how all the other zombies feel?

Maybe we could move using the noise.

I slipped my hand into my pocket and pulled out some ear buds, placing them in my ears.

Sometimes people say I'm too prepared.

But it came in handy for once.

I pulled the spare pair out and handed them to Gyeong-su.

He smiled gratefully and put them in.

I waited for the next rumble of thunder and was pleased when my ears didn't feel like death.

The rain might mask our smell a bit.

"It's raining!" Dae-su yelled as he looked up at the sky and opened his mouth.

I laughed quietly as others did the same.

At least we won't die of dehydration.

I didn't know where Gwi-nam was at the moment... but I'm sure he'd come after us again.

"Maybe we should take this opportunity to get out of here." I spoke over the rain.

"Go where?"

"The mountains. Away from civilisation." I stated, "There will be barely any zombies there, right?"

Cheong-san nodded, "We can use the thunder to move. The zombies won't be able to hear us if we move every time it strikes."

The others enjoyed the rain for a few moments before we headed for the door.

"Gyeong-su." I called quietly do the others wouldn't hear, "We should try and find some food for the others."

"Where?" He asked.

"The music room. The cupboard." I nodded to myself, "I'm sure someone was in there earlier. And I'm pretty sure food will be in there."

We walked at the back of the group as everyone climbed down the stairs.

Once they were further away we headed down the corridor towards the music room.

I pulled the door open.

There was a huge pool of blood on the floor.

The edges of it had started to dry but it still looked sticky.

I saw the bag with food and drinks in next to it.

Whoever was here... they must be dead now.

"I think someone was here." Gyeong-su trailed off, "You were right. Do you think Gwi-nam found them first?"

I frowned, "Who knows? We should take a backpack instead of this bag."

Gyeong-su nodded and grabbed a random backpack.

He tipped it upside down to empty it.

Books and pens came flying out and landed on the ground in a messy pile.

I walked into the cupboard and grabbed more food as we stuffed it into the backpack until it was full.

My eyes drooped and my legs started to wobble.

Gyeong-su placed the backpack on my back and then crouched down in front of me.

"Get on." He commanded.

"What?" I asked in surprise.

"You're exhausted and haven't slept." He answered and waited for me to climb on.

He stood up slowly when I was on his back.

I rested my head on his shoulder tiredly as my body slumped over in exhaustion.

"Go to sleep." Gyeong-su spoke quietly before pressing a kiss to my forehead.

My eyes fell shut and I eventually fell asleep to the sound of the rain and his footsteps.

~*~

I blinked tiredly as my vision cleared.

The cold rain was hitting my body still.

I noticed we had come quite far.

There was a wizzing noise as an arrow flew through the air and hit one of the zombies in the head.

Peering in the direction it came from, I saw a small group of people.

The girl who shot the arrow stood in a confident stance and held a bow.

Did the archery club come back?

"You're awake? You've only been asleep for fifteen minutes." Gyeong-su whispered.

I nodded tiredly and let me head fall back onto his shoulder.

We all hurried into the building once we realised there were too many zombies.

Thunder rumbled again and there was a flash of lightning that lit up the gym.

There were a bunch of zombies at the other side.

"Shit!"

Everyone rushed into the store room and locked the door.

They were all breathing heavily with exhaustion.

Nam-ra and Gyeong-su were unaffected and didn't seem tired at all.

Even though he was carrying me, he's not tired at all.

It was silent for a few moments as everyone just stared at everyone else.

Gyeong-su placed me down on the floor and sat beside me.

I pulled the bag onto my lap and sat there watching everyone else.

"Cheong-san... I'm sorry. I didn't know that she was your mum." Dae-su apologised.

Damn, I missed all the drama while I was asleep.

Did his mum come to save him? I'm guessing she's a zombie now.

I smiled sadly as tears threatened to escape.

It's not fair.

I got up to sit beside Cheong-san and gave him a tight hug.

Cheong-san tiredly rested his head against my shoulder and held onto my arms that were wrapped around him.

We didn't speak.

I didn't know what to say... but that was okay.

Gyeong-su sat on Cheong-san's other side and brought us into a group hug with Cheong-san sandwiched in the middle.

Cheong-san smiled slightly and held onto us as if we were his lifeline.

We sat there in silence for a few moments before letting go off him.

I grabbed the bag and stood in the middle of the room.

"What?" On-jo asked.

I emptied the bags and lots of packet of various foods fell out as well as some cans with drinks in.

Everyone scrambled up.

"Food." I stated.

Everyone thanked me as they grabbed some.

"Are you not going to eat?" Mi-jin asked me with a raised eyebrow, "You're the one who risked your life to get all that food."

"I can't. I'm a zombie."

She froze and blinked in surprise, "What?"

"Yeah. We have three of them." Dae-su laughed as if it were normal.

"What the fuck?"

I went and sat by Mi-jin and we talked for a while.

We actually became pretty good friends.

Some of the others were asleep or had started to fall asleep.

We found some towels in here earlier so we dried our skin and clothes the best we could but my clothes were still a bit damp.

~*~

I woke up feeling very warm.

I turned my head and saw almost everyone still asleep.

A few people had started to wake up.

Gyeong-su clung to me tightly in his sleep.

My head was rested against his chest and I was curled into his arms comfortably.

My back hurt a little from sleeping in a weird position all night.

I sat up straight which made my back crunch.

It wasn't long before everyone had woken up.

The zombies are still outside.

I can hear them.

What do we do now? We're still trapped.

At least we aren't on the roof anymore.

Gwi-nam won't be able to find us for now.

Now that it was lighter I could actually see the room properly.

Gyeong-su sighed tiredly and scrunched his eyes as he woke up.

I wrapped my arms around his tightly and held him closer.

He shuffled a bit and rested his head on my shoulder.

I chuckled quietly, "You can't go back to sleep. We're kinda in an apocalypse right now."

"Fuck the apocalypse." Gyeong-su groaned, "I'm tired." (Relatable)

I watched as Dae-su and Ha-ri fought.

Gyeong-su sighed and finally opened his eyes to look at me.

"Alright. You win. I'm awake."

I smiled and kissed him on the cheek.

He narrowed his eyes at me playfully and kissed my cheeks several times while laughing cutely.

I laughed and pushed him away, "Okay... that's enough."

"I'm just showing you how much I love you." Gyeong-su grinned.

"By smothering me?"

"Exactly."

Su-hyeok stood up and grabbed the cart full of balls.

He pulled onto it and kicked it.

What is he up to?

"We can tie all the carts in a circle, then we can just use them as a shield." Su-hyeok stated.

Everyone silently got to work and started moving them and tying them together with bits of string they found in a box.

I looked in all of the boxes to see if we could use anything else.

There was a box full of protective gear like shoulder pads, elbow pads and knee pads.

That would give us a bit of protection.

"Can't we use this?" I asked, gaining people's attention.

I dumped the box on the floor, "Protective gear. It should help a bit."

~*~

They started to argue about whether to put the lid up or not.

If we did hide underneath them, couldn't the zombies climb into the unprotected gaps.

Well, they could probably climb over regardless.

Nam-ra rattled the carts loudly to make them stop arguing.

"We'll vote on it." She stated.

Majority of the people agree to have the lids open to make the defence higher.

Mi-jin grumbled but got to work in standing all the lids up.

~*~

I grabbed the door handle and twisted it slowly before throwing the doors open.

Everyone rushed out, pulling the carts.

"Turn!"

I kicked a few zombies who were too close away and everyone ran in a circle to get the carts to come together.

We all got in the middle of it before the gap closed and tried to make our way to the entrance.

Zombies grabbed at us and tried to climb over and grabbed us.

I grabbed a zombies face and threw them back.

"Push!"

The noise of our yelling and struggling attracted basically all of the zombies in the gym as they all dashed over and tried to reach for us.

There were too many.

I kept trying to push them off but more and more kept climbing over.

Can we make it?

The zombies pushed against us as we tried to move it.

"It won't budge!" Dae-su swore.

"Keep pushing!" Joon-yeong yelled.

"It won't move!" Mi-jin yelled in response.

We all pushed with all our might but it barely moved and the zombies were trying to climb over.

Bloody hands reached for us as we ducked out of the way and tried to hit them off.

We had stopped trying to push the cart at this point and we were just trying to get the zombies away.

They were relentless.

I turned to Joon-yeong and saw the bloody bit mark on his hand.

"I'll take responsibility." He stated before pulling a gap in the carts and leaving through it.

"What are you doing!?" I yelled after him in alarm as he ran and drew all the zombies away.

Even if he didn't turn into a zombie... will all those other zombies around him.

He'll probably get several bite marks.

Would he even be able to survive that?

I was unable to stop him as he left.

We could've saved him.

He would've been alright.

Everyone started quickly pushing the carts towards the door.

Was his sacrifice really worth it?

Wasn't there another way?

Maybe I should drawn them away or done something.

Maybe if I was stronger or better...

This feels like my fault.

I watched as Joon-yeong turned into a zombie and started thrashing around on the blood as his bones crunched and cracked painfully.

Just as we made it to the door, it opened.

"Dad..." On-jo mumbled before running towards him and enveloping him in a tight hug.

He came for her after all.

He came for us... to save us.

We all raced out of the door and slammed it shut, trapping the zombies inside.
