Chapter Twenty One
Chapter Twenty One
M y legs buckled so I had to cling on to the pole for support. The metal burned at my palms so I had to let go, tumbling to the ground.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded as she neared. Now, without the sun or any lights apart from the stars and the moon, she looked oddly malicious. Her eyes were a lighter green, like that colour that they always use for Disney Villain's eyes, and her gaze that was usually so kind and calm, had contorted into one of disgust and loathing.
"Why nothing, Aidan." She mocked, taking more steps forward, towards me. I was on my butt, so I slowly started edging backwards. Fear bubbled in my oesophagus and I felt slightly nauseated. My sneakers dug into the ground as I hauled myself along. I cursed my body for being so useless.
"Then why are you here?"
She went faster now, speed walking towards me with such intent it made me pale. I desperately drew in some energy but it seemed as though it was failing to cooperate with me now.
"You see, as you said. You're a Saint." She hummed, and reminded me of someone who is half out of their mind. "And they are worth a lot of money." She paused, I was going to go after one of your friends, but water that little stunt you pulled, I know how powerful you really are."
"I'm not going to fight you." I murmured. Icy strands of fear shot through my veins and I struggled to pick myself up and run.
"Well, that will make things so much easier for the both of us."
"Sto-" was all I got out before she ran full speed at me, and drove her fist into my stomach. I doubled over and my vision exploded with white in pain. She got in another punch to my jaw which made my eyes water and sent me tumbling back to the ground. My mouth flooded with the coppery taste of blood and I gagged it out, splatting onto the concrete.
She kicked my back and I bent down, and my chin hit the ground. I growled in annoyance at myself for being so useless. She pushed me onto the ground so that her mouth was inches from my ear. "Don't struggle and this will be easier."
At that, anger buzzed in my ears and i formed a plan. I fell limp, against the concrete. Nana P eased up, sitting back and I used that chance to explode upwards and wiggled away from her.
"Get back here!" She shrieked and I ignored it, crawling away on my knees. I stumbled to my feet. Then, I tried to run forward but Nana P wrapped her hand around my wrist, dragging me back.
Electricity... I need to use it. I brought in the energy quicker than usual, then felt it buzzing in my ears. It filled my body and before it got to much to handle, I pushed it out of my hand where Nana P was holding me. She let out a cry and I ran forward.
"Gabriel!" I yelled, but there was no answer. My heart pounded and I bolted for the platform, hurrying up a ladder of rubber tyres that led to the closest platform. The second I was up I spun and shot another bolt at her. I managed to not take in so much energy, only to take enough. Nana P ducked, looking up at me from on the ground. She wiped a smear of blood that trickled from her lips. I shuddered. Where was Gabriel and that fucking car? I gripped onto the log beam heading to another platform and scrambled across like a rat.
I turned to see Nana P hauling herself into the first platform and I turned to assess the platform, and how I continued to get way. There was a shiny slide that headed to a lower platform so I climbed upwards at it. My sneakers made a creak as I practically dragged myself up it.
Then I heard it. The sound of Jesus.
No, it was just the roar of an engine. I threw another lightning bolt towards her, but it barely hit the platform she was on. I jumped from the wood onto the ground. It was only a few feet, and I quickly recovered. Relief flooded me and made me want to just lie down in exhaustion, I spotted Gabriel and his black Porsche at the edge of the playground and I raced towards him, the loosely scattered wood chippings flying in my wake.
"Get In!" He yelled as I ran towards him.
He didn't need to say twice as I dived into the car with a gruff; "No shit!"
I buckled the seat as Gabriel stepped on the accelerator and we spun away from the playground. I clutched the corners of the leather as I was forced into my seat. Gabriel was driving faster than I thought possible. It would have been fun if I didn't realise I was running away from mortal danger. I turned and glanced out of the rear-window. Nana P was out of sight. I drew out a breath I didn't realise I was holding in and slid further into the car.
"Okay. Now's the chance to tell me what the hell just happened and what we need to do now." Gabriel said snippily. I turned to him and rolled my eyes.
"I don't really know." My voice broke. "I was just lying there, then she came out." My breathing hitched as I remembered what had happened. Tears stung at the back of my eyes. "Then she was talking crazy - saying we were worth a lot of money and stuff then she chased me." I pressed my lips together and buried my face in my hands. "Then she chased me. I wish I fought back. I wish I tried harder."
Gabriel placed his hand onto mine whilst the other remained on the steering wheel. I realised what he was doing as the energy streamed into me, and the wound on my hand was gone in an instant. I felt a little settled, as if the healing had partially helped my mind as well.
I breathed steadily. "Thank you." I brought his hand up to my lips and kissed it slowly, still clutching to him like he was my life source. I blinked back the tears and sniffed, wiping my nose along the cuff of my sleeve.
Gabriel reminded his hand gently and placed it back on the wheel. "Where can we go? Where can we be safe?" I asked, cracking my knuckles and glancing out of the window.
Gabriel thought for a second, looking out of the front mirror with a steely glint in his eyes. "Carlo."
