Chapter Fifteen

Chapter Fifteen

H o m e r o o m on Monday was interesting, to say the least. Once the second bell had gone and everyone was settled, Carlo stood up and commanded the room in front of the board.

"I have some... troubling news for you." He said, and my heart rate started dramatically increasing. "A Minotaur's body has been found on the outskirts of town. Don't worry, though; the Elders have been informed and we are upping our guard around the city. But it anyone does know something - Tell an elder immediately."

As the talking and murmuring it the class grew louder, the adrenaline shot through my body, but I still sat frozen, my expression stony. I bounced my leg up and down under the desk and started cracking my fingers. The fear and confusion bubbled in my stomach, so I took a long sip of water to quench those emotions.

Ducky glanced at me worriedly. "So are we going to tell them," he said quietly, glancing around so no one else could hear us. "Or not?"

Lee angled his chair from in front to look at us. "I don't think we should." He murmured. I raised my eyebrows, invisibly begging him to explain. "What would the elders think? We would get into trouble. Plus, they woulda so us how two teenage girls took down a fully grown, 8 foot Monster."

My mouth was suddenly dry, so I licked my lips and looked to Harlow. My intestines were squirming uncomfortably. I didn't know what to do.

"I think we should." Harlow said, her golden eyes flashing nervously. She flicked the hair from her fringe out of her eyes. "What night happen if we're targeted again? Someone could die."

"That's true," I said, sitting back in my chair. I stuffed my hands into my hoodie and twiddled my thumbs around each other anxiously, fighting the urge to crack my knuckles again.

"Of course what Harlow says is right," Summer's annoying, high voice whined from beside us. I sat up striaght, worried that she heard the whole conversation, I leaned forward so I was looking past Ducky at her. Her steely hazel eyes were narrow and curious, but lacking any new found information, it seemed, so I could breathe a slightly of relief.

"Heck off, Summer. Don't you have some boy to go fuck?" Ducky snapped, and I had to give the goofy, peace making guy kudos for trying.

Summer flicked her gaze from Ducky to me, then back to Harlow, a disinterested look on her face. Scarlett caught my eye from beside Summer, but she didn't seem like she was going to step in and help anytime soon.

Thanks for that bonding in the bathroom. Really strengthened our friendship. I thought sarcastically.

"Please," Summer laughed cruelly, tossing her bleached hair over one shoulder. "Everything Harlow does is right."

I opened my mouth to object but Summer continued. "She knows everything. What's the capital of Norway, Harlow dearie?"

Harlow looked at the table and I thrust my shoulder so I was in-between them now, almost as if I were Harlow's shield. "Oslo." She said in a barely audible whisper.

Summer snorted but some how made it still sound elegant. My eyes flashed from Summer to Gabriel, but the look in his watery silver eyes proved he was just as worried as I was. I glanced back to Summer, as her lips twisted into a stone cold smirk. My stomach was doing flips as if it were on the Smiley roller coaster ride.

I bit the inside of my cheek to stop from lunging to smack Summer across the face, so hard I felt the metallic taste of blood in my mouth. The electricity was back, zipping up and down my fingers with little pin pricks. My eyes widened as I saw little flashes of light interconnecting my fingers together, like a plasma ball. Fear shot down my arms and I scrunched my hands into fists, squeezing to tight that my finger nails dug into my palms.

Unaware of my battle with electricity, Summer looked at her nails, seemingly unbothered. "I have another question." Her voice was sugary sweet. "Harlow, honey, why is girl on fire such a good song?"

My muscles clenched. This couldn't end well. Harlow's Face was pinched but her golden eyes glowed with anger.

"Because of your poor taste in music?" Lee brushed the hair from his eyes and smirked.

Summer rolled her eyes. Gabriel finally stepped in, placing his hand on Summer's shoulder. "Sum', stop." He said, but didn't hold much confidence in his voice.

Summer moved her shoulder aggressively to shake Gabriel's hand, and shot him a glare. She turned back to us. "Because it reminds me of when your mother burned in that house."

My mouth fell open. Harlow never told me that. But she did mention she was adopted. My heart banged with sympathy and I felt my cheeks flush with rage towards Summer.

"Shut up," Harlow said softly, covering her ears with her palms.

"I'm just saying," Summer continued, oblivious to Harlow's words. "Stay away from us unless you want another accidental fire on your hands."

"Shut up," Harlow repeated, more desperation in her voice this time, clenching her palms so her knuckles were white.

"Stop it, Summer." Scarlett said sharply, but the brown haired girl took no heed.

"But it wasn't accidental, was it?" Summer demanded. "She always was crazy. Prancing and singing and dancing; you could tell she was coo coo by a mile away."

"I said shut up!" Harlow yelled, getting up from her chair. It squeaked horribly against the shiny floor. Harlow grabbed the front of her desk and flipped it, and incredible act of her super strength. It settled on its back with the legs in the air with a bang.

The whole class was quiet. Everyone was watching Harlow, astounded and frankly dumbfounded looks written across all of their faces. My heart was pounding so loudly I thought that everyone could hear it.

Harlow looked scared. Her eyebrows were furrowed and she bowed her head so her fringe hid her eyes. She stepped over the flipped table and proceeded to run out of the room, slamming the door behind her. It was so loud that I flinched.

Me, Lee and Ducky immediately went to chase after her, but the look on Lee's face made me hesitate. I tugged Ducky's cuff on his sweatshirt to make him stop and Lee hurried out after Harlow. It was her brother, after all. Maybe her brother was needed more than a girl she had known for a week.

I was still standing up as I turned to face Summer. My hands were still clenched but my whole arms started shaking. My mouth was as parched as sandpaper.

I didn't know what I was going to do. Maybe yell. Maybe insult. Maybe cry. My nostrils flared, but Ducky was sitting down again, and I didn't want to have all of the attention. So, grumbling to myself, I slid down my seat again. The murmurs broke out again, and I glared at Summer, trying to push all of my loathing and hate towards her.

She just tossed her hair and sent me a smile as if to say I won.

The electricity was back, and I looked down at my unclenched hands. I shook out my hands and pretended to swat a bug. I caught Summer's gaze again. I gritted my teeth, but forced my face into a stone cold expression, and flipped her off.

I was kind of including Scarlett and Gabriel in this, since their input was too little, too late.

"Miss Sterling!" Carlo's voice boomed from the front of the classroom. I dropped my hand and turned to him, biting my lip. "That explicit behaviour is not permitted in this classroom." I bowed my head as a wave of shame washed over me.

"I'm sorry, Carlo," Gabriel spoke up from next to Summer, and I side ways glanced at him through slitted eyes. "But Summer was saying some cruel stuff to Harlow and that's why she ran out of the room. Aidan was just acting on impulse."

I peeped at Carlo, who was watching Gabriel through narrowed eyes. I felt the class' gaze boring into my head.

After a few moments of him swimmingly thinking it over, Carlo pushed his glasses further up his nose. "Summer - detention. And Aidan, I expect you, the Abbots, Cassius and you two," He nodded to Scarlett and Gabriel. "In my class after school."

I nodded meekly, pulling my bag up and standing up again. I needed to go see if Harlow was okay, but I hated to admit it, but it wasn't the thing that was bugging me right now. What could Carlo possibly want to talk to us about.

My blood ran cold. Shit. Had he seen my electricity?
