The Lamb

As Jane watched on as Jacob took photos of Emma, she rubbed the spot on her cheek where Millard had kissed. Could it be possible? Could it be possible that she and Jacob would both fall in love? At the same place? On the same day? Given, the loop always made it possible. Would they stay here, living in the guard of the loop? Or would they move on with their lives? Jane knew, as sure as blood ran through her veins, that she would stay. She ignored that drowning feeling that something was wrong. That Miss Peregrine was hiding something. As soon as Emma left, Jane bounded up to Jacob.

"So... Emma?" Jane asked casually. Jacob blushed bright red. Now, Jane was used to Jacob's emotions and reactions, but this was new. Never, in all her shared sixteen years with him, had she ever seen him blush. Not once, not even when he was ashamed, or embarrassed. Not when  their mother had brought up girls to him. Not during 'the talk', which every living kid dreads, NEVER had she seen him blush. Seeing this awakened her inner three year old.

"Jacob's got a crush on Em-ma!" she sang, loud and clear.

"Shut up!" he yelled, almost purple from blushing so hard.

"JACOB'S GOT-" Jane sang even louder, when Mr. Portman arrived.

"Jacob! Jane! I've been looking for you!" he bellowed.

"Hey, dad, we're back for-" Jane replied.

"Forget dinner. Follow me."

"What's going on?" asked Jacob.

"I'll explain it on the way. Why are you so red, Jacob? And both of you are wet!"

"We were enjoying the scenery. Well, I was, and Jacob was enjoying the island's life forms," Jane teased. "Anyways. Who died? Please let it be Uncle Bobby."

"No, no, no. Well, sort of. Some sheep. And although we'd all prefer it to be Uncle Bobby, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you say that." Jacob laughed. "They think it was kids who did it. Like, a vandalism thing."

"Who? Sherlock Holmes?" asked Jane.

"Nah, the sheep police." joked Jacob.

"The farmers," said Mr. Portman patiently. "and they're pretty interested into what you've been doing." Jacob tensed.

"I've got it," whispered Jane to Jacob. Jane, you see, had an easier time to lie to people. She didn't do it often, but this Island Debacle was really getting that number up there. "here's our cover..."

"What you two been up to?" asked the farmer.

"We were exploring the house. We found a lot of old photographs and lost track of time. We also were just messing around there." Jane said placidly.

"This true?" asked the farmer to Mr. Portman. "But, may I add, only a certified idiot would go in there."

"Yes, it is." Mr. Portman said oddly.

"I told yous, it was this one!" one of the farmers held up Worm.

"Oh, puh-leeze. That guy is all talk, no brains or brawn, or bravery," Jane interjected, "If anything, it's probably an animal." Some farmers murmured.

"Let's go see this for ourselves." Mr. Portman announced.

"I'd still like to know why you are still so red."

"Sunburn, that's all." Jane said.

"No, from him."

"Yeah, sunburn dad." Jacob said, not paying attention.

"Hmmmmmmm" was Mr. Portman's answer.

Late that night, as Jane tossed and turned, she saw Jacob looking at his screen forlornly. She realized he was looking at his photos of Emma. She realized that she was only thinking of Millard as well. How calm he was. How he was so smart, and every molecule of his existence.

"Hey, Jacob?"

"Yeah?"

"You know we can stay in the loop, right?"

"What do you mean?"

"We can stay. Forever. With Emma, and Millard, and Bronwyn,-"

"We could..."

"I think... I will." Jane turned over, and left her brother to stay wide awake while she slept peacefully.
