BONFIRE
Half past seven on a Halloween evening and the bonfire had already been burning for quite some time. The kids had all finished their trick or treating and there were by now myself and two other adults keeping an eye on the bonfire. Even at thirty-five, it is strange to think of myself as an adult, I am the biggest kid I know and Halloween is one of those great times of the year, definitely a time when I can let the big kid inside of me come out.
I had already gone and had my serious bit of fun for the evening having dressed up in my scream costume, where the kids from the street chased after me rather than being frightened of someone in such a costume, but now was the time to ensure their safety as the bonfire burned and the fireworks went off.
There was quite a cold chill in the air, but this added to the atmosphere of the occasion and as long as it didn't rain, then all was well and good. All should be well and was well until things turned kinda strange.
John, Bill, and I, the three of us all stood close by the bonfire. One street, two rows of houses face each other leading into a cul de sac which turned off to the left at the top of the street. A large gap parted the houses on the bottom half of the street from those on the top half of the street, the right side this gap led out of the estate and on the left side was and is a small field. This small field is where the bonfire had been built. The bulk of it had been reduced and what was left still burned with its ambers being carried away in the light chilled breeze. More wood would come somewhat rebuilding the bonfire as it burned.
There was hedging at the back of the field on the other side of which was another estate where from said estate plenty more children would come around and join in the festive fun. From within that dark hedging behind us, a loud whisper called out our names, first John, then Bill and very soon my name was called.
Our immediate thoughts were that some kids were trying to pull a Halloween prank on us, but as the voice called out our names again the breeze picked up speed. Leaves and other debris started to blow in the faces of the children and a panic soon began to ensue. The newly restacked bonfire collapsed. Some of the kids began to scream. The voice called out our names once again with somewhat of a louder whisper than before.
When I turned at looked towards the hedging, I could see two rather large red lights with a black spot in each light like two large red eyes looking out at me. A large dark nothingness began to open up. It was as if a black hole just opened up and it grew quickly consuming all it came into contact with. Panic was now all around as we attempted to get the children as far away from that nothingness as possible.
I have no explanation for what was happening. It was and is the strangest and most frightening thing I have ever encountered. The nothingness took the field and all that was in it, the burning bonfire just disappeared as the dark gaping hole just grew larger and larger. House doors opened and the children ran into the first open door they could get to whether they belonged to that home or not.
As John, Bill, and I, made our way down the street, John fell but before I could get to him and help him up, he disappeared into the ever-growing black hole. Bill and I picked up speed and ran towards the bottom of the street. A black stretched limousine had pulled up on front of us, the rear end doors opened and without thinking, we both got in.
Out from the darkness that was approaching came something which was to land of the bonnet of the limo. It was John's severed head. If that wasn't freakish enough, John's eyes opened, and the head asked 'not waiting for me? Well thank you both very much.'
The limo took off, moving away from the nothingness and this was another moment of strangeness for there appeared to be no driver, there was no driver, only myself and Bill in the back, nobody in the front. The limo brought us towards the nearby mountains, and it went up one in particular. A winding road circled higher and higher turning to the left all the way and we inside the limo were teetering ever so close to the cliff side.
Bill was sitting in the seat to the right side. His door suddenly opened and with the force from the speed we were travelling at, Bill slipped and tumbled falling right out of the car then down the cliff side.
The mountain the car was climbing, seemed to narrow the higher it went and when it reached the top, it just drove right off with me still inside. Just as I braced myself for the pending crash, and my own certain demise, I found myself suddenly back standing in front of the bonfire. Both John and Bill were standing next to me and both of them, just like me seemed to be coming out of a position as if we had been preparing for an impact.
We all looked at each other and words came out of our mouths without forming full sentences.
'Did you...?'
'Yeah, and did...?'
'Yeah.'
'How the hell? ....'
We all had the same experience but with different viewpoints. For John it was Bill who was consumed by the nothingness and whose head appeared on the limo's bonnet, with me falling down the cliff side, and for Bill it was me going into the black hole with John falling down the cliff side.
The evening continued without incident but John, Bill, and I would be freaked out once more before we were to call it a night and head indoors, as we all were sure that we heard a loud whisper call our names once more. When we turned towards the hedging, we could see two large red lights with black spots at their center and it seemed we were being watched by two large red eyes ...
