SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS
Different, Wendy would like something different to come around every once in a while. How nice it would be to have that happen, have something come and break up the routine that is ... life. It doesn't have to be something permanent, though she might like that, permanent, different, and permanent, ... permanent? Well, maybe one day.
There are those who come from money, the kind who have attended expensive colleges paid by their parents, those who have completed lengthy courses only to come away with a degree or something similar and not much else. These kind of people, well the guys at least, in Wendy's experience, seem to believe they know what a girl wants the instant they meet one. They wine, dine and try to impress only to go on and become controlling, demanding, and horrid.
This might be fine for most or even for some but not for Wendy no matter how handsome and or wealthy these fellows might be, no matter what they can give her, no matter the life and lifestyle she could have with such a fellow, no, Wendy so wants something fun, something ... different.
There is the other type whose company Wendy often seems to attract, the drinking, party going, pool playing, rough and tumble kind of guy. These guys may or may not have money and are generally attractive too, at least physically. They can be fun, for a while at least, even adventure like, though relationships with this kind of guy generally don't last long. Still Wendy would like something more, something ... different.
Ronan would like to belong to either of these kind of guys. They get the girls, they get the good times, most have money, and possibly just as important ... they have ... lives. What Ronan has is none of that, what Ronan has is next to nothing, what Ronan has is ... depressing. It would be nice if he could just win once in life. Ronan is not a winner; he believes it when he is told that he is a loser. He will never have anything, and he accepts this for it is life, it is his life.
When Ronan heads out, no one takes notice, he is invisible. He is well used to people vacating his company even when he is speaking mid-sentence. Very few have the decency to last a whole conversation with him. When he is visible, then he is nothing more than a punching bag, someone to abuse both physically and mentally.
If only the ground beneath him could open up and swallow him whole, yeah, if that were to happen, he would be just fine with such a thing. He has nothing, falling into an endless pit would at least be something.
On two sides of the same street, if it were wet and cold on one side and warm and dry on the other, rest assured Ronan would find himself on the wrong side, all wet, cold, and underdressed for where he finds himself to be.
The likes of Wendy would be on the bright side of the street, the side of the street where the sun always sends its glow, its heat, and its happiness. Girls like Wendy never cross the street, they never notice the guy being splashed as each passing car purposely hits the sidewalk puddles, they never notice guys like Ronan only this time Wendy does notice as indeed Wendy wants something ... different.
Not only does Wendy cross the street, but she also makes sure that she jumps right into one of those sidewalk puddles for if this fellow she spies has to be wet then hell, so does she. Ronan was ready. He saw her coming and was ready to receive abuse, ready to be told why he is useless even if his abuser is someone who does not know him at all. Someone like Wendy would only ever approach to make him feel as unworthy as he always has felt, he is sure there is no other reason for her to approach, but when she hits that puddle, everything changed.
Instead of his heart sinking, it doubled in size; the smile on Ronan's face turned sadness upside down and soon too did double in size. For the first time in his life, his side of the street shone bright, and nothing can ever take this special moment away from him.
Initially, when they made an entrance together into a club, pub, restaurant or anywhere of the likes, Ronan slouched. He hid, he was ready to hear how unworthy he was to be in the presence of such a lady the likes of Wendy, or to be refused entry while she gets in with ease, but she thought him how to stand tall, how to sit up straight, how to never let another bring him down.
His confidence grew, his eyes shined and even his hair soon adjusted to follow suit. Everything became awesome. His life has completely turned around. The relationship between Wendy and Ronan only lasted one summer, just three short months which in itself also felt like a lifetime though this was alright. Ronan kind of knew from the start that this was destined to happen.
The parting happened on pleasant terms initiated by Wendy. Ronan was heartbroken of course, though he tried not to be. Wendy insisted, begged, no dared him not to change who he had become. She defied him to beat the odds and remain the handsome confident guy he had indeed become, and he accepted the challenge.
Years passed and Ronan married, had children and grandchildren. He was sure that all this happened for one reason. It all happened because a lady named Wendy once wanted something different. She wanted something like what they had, she had wanted him, and he never forgot her as she never forgot him. Ronan had become a ... winner.
How a few months changed a life, changed a number of lives and all for the better too. If only the whole world could be so bright, so warm all of the time. How nice it would be to spend a day, a week, a month, or even a whole summer living in happiness. Wouldn't we all like to have something just like this?
