Chapter 18 Many Surprises
You know the best and the worst thing about high school? One! YES PEOPLE JUST ONE SMALL MOMENT CAN CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE PERSPECTIVE ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL! Well, two weeks back Brandon Johnson happened, it wasn't a pleasant experience. And he's just making it more scary to witness since he has been quiet after hearing all that from Anna.
Is this the calm before the storm? I tried talking to him but every time I try to approach him, he picks up a book and says,
"I'm studying, can we talk later?"
"I'm studying, let's do it some other time"
"I'm studying, you're disturbing me,"
LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY'S STUDYING WHEN WE HAVE OUR EXAMS SIX MONTHS LATER! IT'S OBVIOUS HE DOESN'T WANNA TALK TO ME ANYMORE!
This is a problem because I don't know what's going inside his mind. I was keeping in check if there were any rumours spreading but everything was quiet. It was unusual. That Friday morning, I stood at my locker and kept took my books. The halls were packed since people were rushing to their classes. I was about to leave but as soon as I turned back, I saw a goth guy and shouted.
I was surprised, okay?!
His skin was as white as paper and his lips were as black as coal, just like his hair. He had his ears pierced at every angle and his eyes were neon green. He had done some cat eye make up too. Dude, I've always been weak to goths. He was about the same height as me, basically a short dude.
"Yes?" He was just staring at me so I decided to open my mouth.
He looked at me from top to bottom and handed me a poster, "We're doing a charity performance," His voice was so deep it could make people high.
"Okay?" I looked at the poster. It was a performance by some Chellelui band? I wasn't interested in goth concerts. Oh right, it's cruel world tomorrow. For those of you who don't know, Cruel World is a one-day festival we celebrate in September in Los Angeles, it's mostly for goths. Was he inviting me there?
"Uh, sounds good but I'm not interested in Goth culture—"
"It's not a goth performance. We have it in the music room in the lunch break. You a freshman?"
"Yes. So, it's by a school club?"
"By the music club."
"Oh," I looked at the poster. So, it was a charity concert?
"Sounds fun," I looked up but he was gone. And I went back to my class.
During the lunch break, I went to keep my books and get some money for the cafeteria.
"Hey Kate," Jaden stood beside my locker.
"Hey Jaden," I closed my locker, "Oh right! Wanna go to that concert at the music room?"
"You got that poster too?" Jaden took a poster from his pocket.
"Who gave it to you?" I took out my poster.
"Some senior with green hair,"
"Oh, you wanna go?"
"I mean, it's a charity concert. We should just go for a while at least,"
"Yeah, let's see this school's music club,"
We walked up the stairs to the music room. It was PACKED! There was such a huge crowd inside that room. Some people were even standing outside the music room, pushing each other to pack themselves inside those sweaty teenage bodies. YUCK!
But I was curious. Was our school music club so awesome? I wanted to hear them so Jaden and I stood a bit away from the struggling crowd. We couldn't see but at least we could hear.
"Hello everyone," I heard a loud voice on the speakers kept behind us. The concert was starting and people had gone insane. More people were joining in too, "It's your boi, MJ, with Louise, Jerome and Malcolm. I want to thank all of you who have donated in our donation box for charity." He spoke while his band mates just tuned their instruments in the background.
"About 50,000 people are infected with HIV each year, and 1 in 4 is 13 to 24 years old. About 16,000 people die of HIV infection every year here in the states. The greatest number of infections occur among gay and bisexual youth and most youth are not getting it tested. It's very important that you visit a doctor if you see the symptoms and make use you don't have multiple sex partners and use a condom every time you have sex because AIDS is not a cool disease to have,"
"Is it really a music club?" I was impressed by how knowledgeable that guy sounded. Damn dude. "So, this one's for AIDS!" They started playing and he sang.
Guys, I'm addicted! That was awesome! They played many songs and talked about so many issues that I didn't even know existed in America and the way he presented it seemed to go with the flow of the concert. It was epic! These guys were doing something really cool. Can't believe I have such good seniors. I remember that guy's name. MJ was it?
The break was over. Jaden and I had journalism class after it so we left together.
"Okay Jaden, so help me. I have this friend who has a friend who's not talking to him because my friend's sister said mean things to my friend's friend, so what should my friend do in order to solve things between him and his friend?" I asked.
"You have other friends too?" He got me "I have no idea, what you're talking about," Jaden was confused so I decided to repeat myslef.
"I said, I have this friend—"
"OKAY OKAY! I got it. Just remember that whatever happens, happens for the best" Jaden was surprisingly useless! I was literally about to throw my shoe at his face for this crap he just puked out of his mouth but then I realized the guy's right! I am such a fool! I should get the signal and move away from Brandon Johnson while I can!
"You know, they both should talk it out and cancel out that awkwardness between them, 'cause that what's friends do" Jaden said while I was lost in my own thoughts.
"Yes! You're right! WE DO NOT NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS!" I shouted.
"That's the opposite of what I just said"
I looked at Jaden, and he looked at me. We continued staring at each other until Jaden finally said "Okay, I think you need a girlfriend,"
"Could you get me one?"
"Of course. Cortney Hales!"
"Nah, she's bitchy and she exposes too much skin. I hate those types of girls!" I said.
"Teresa Andrion" Jaden took another name.
"She's my sister's bff. Dating her would be so weird,"
"Anna Roberts?"
"Bruh, she's my sister,"
"Really?"
"Can't you see our face?"
"You do resemble a bit,"
"She has low face fat, that's all,"
"Oh, then, Viana Kimsten?"
"She's hot but she's taller than me. We would look completely weird together" I said.
"Brandon Johnson?"
WHAT THE FUCK? HOW COULD HE MENTION A GUY'S NAME? DOES HE KNOW ABOUT US?
MAYBE HE SAW US SOMEWHERE? IN THE SHED? ON THE TERRACE? UNDER THAT TREE? AT MY HOUSE? THERE ARE JUST SO MANY PLACES, I CAN'T TELL WHERE COULD HE HAVE POSSIBLY SEEN US BOTH!
"Jaden, I'm not gay—"
"He's calling you," Jaden pointed behind me. I turned back and found BRANDON JOHNSON standing at the door of the media room.
"What?" I said from my seat. He first looked at me and then at Jaden.
"Who is Jaden Smith here?"
"Yeah, that's me," Jaden rose his hand.
"After this class, meet me on the terrace," Brandon sounded cold. What did this dude do now? Whenever Brandon sounds like that, I get a really bad feeling.
I guess it's just PTSD? Whatever it is, I don't like it when Brandon is angry.
"What did you do?" I asked Jaden. THAT'S WHY I TOLD HIM NOT TO BE FRIENDS WITH ME!
"I don't know? I haven't even talked to Brandon Johnson, like ever," Jaden said.
I am not getting good vibes from this, guys. Not at all.
Why is everyone pissing Brandon off? First Anna then Jaden, can you guys like leave him alone? Trust me—You don't want to end up in his dark list! The bells went off and Jaden panicked.
"Should I accompany you?" I asked.
"No, I'm going to the terrace now!" Jaden gave his books to me, "If I don't come back PLEASE ALWAYS REMEMBER ME!" He ran away.
"Jeez! What's the worst that can happen? He is not going to kill you,"
I walked to my locker and switched books. I was walking on the stairs when I saw that goth guy on the stairs, writing something inside a book.
"Hello," I approached him.
He looked at me, "Oh hi," He closed his notebook quickly.
"The concert was nice," I appreciated his effort.
"We have those once every two weeks on Fridays,"
"Really? I'll be there everytime! By the way, are you a senior too?"
"Yes, I'm a fourth year,"
"My name is Kate Roberts,"
"Malcolm Bevery,"
I just nodded awkwardly.
He pushed his notebook inside his bag. I didn't know what else to say, "What were you writing?"
"Just a song,"
"Damn, you write songs?"
"Kind of,"
"Did you write the one they performed today?"
"Somebody helped me with it,"
"And this one? You're writing it yourself?"
"I'm trying,"
"Oh, can I see it?"
"It's...not that good,"
"Oh come on, I'm sure it'd be good—"
"No, bye," He left. Well, I feel really stupid now.
Guess I'm not good at making friends. Did I say something wrong? I was just curious. Whatever, fuck you too, senior.
I walked up to the stairs and saw a crushed sheet of paper fallen on the stairs. Maybe he threw it? I picked it up and unwrapped it.
"The world told be yourself
Then why do I wanna be someone else?
Do this, do that, is all hear,
Is there someone who doesn't live in fear?"
Oh wow, they didn't sing any song like this. So, there's a goth senior in a pop band who writes songs like this? It's been a while since I have been so curious about someone. This school has got a lot of surprises.
