Spirit of The Past
Arthit finally put his hands down, and looked around. There was no sign of John's spirit anymore. So, he got up, and switched the lights back on. Did he just hallucinate? No, right? But there's no such thing as ghosts. It must be the damn pork he ate for dinner.
Arthit got dressed, and climbed into bed. He kept the lights on, not because he was scared per se, but they were just better on. He looked at the clock, and it was almost midnight. He debated if he should sleep or not. If that ghost of John was real, then the Spirit of Past will be here in about an hour. Should he really bother to sleep? He hates being woken in the middle of his sleep.
But then again none of that was real. It's just plain ridiculous. Arthit pulled the covers over his head, and tried to sleep. He tossed, and he turned. He doesn't even know how long he was doing it. The lights were really bothering him. He felt suffocated under the covers, so he finally pushed them off himself.
"Boo!"
"Ahhhhhh!!!!!!"
"Hahahaha."
"Please leave me alone." Arthit had retreated back under his covers.
"Are you sure you want me to leave? This is really for your benefit, not mine."
Arthit slowly lowers the covers to see, "Bright? Is that you? When did you die?"
"Oh, is Bright the name of this handsome Adonis?"
"Handsome? Who? Bright? Nevermind. So, I take it, you are not Bright then. Why do you look like him?"
"Oh, I am a natural born spirit, therefore I don't have a human form. I just transfigured into someone you know so it's more comforting to you."
"Well, of all the people you could have chosen. You had to choose Bright." Arthit finally puts the covers down. Maybe the familiar form is better than seeing a blue cloud.
"Well, this fella is just so handsome. I couldn't help myself." The spirit pulled his pants away, and looked inside his pants.
"What the hell are you doing? You're such a pervert." Arthit shouts at Past.
"Hey, I'm just curious. It's not like I would do anything." Past shrugged.
Past walked closer to Arthit, and Arthit once again covered himself with his covers.
"Oh, please. What are those covers supposed to do? Let's not waste precious time. We don't have all night. I have other appointments."
Past pulled the covers off Arthit, and grabbed him by the wrist.
Arthit saw his life rewind right in front of his eyes. He saw his first day at work spilling his coffee on Tod. He saw Kongpob graduate getting his diploma with highest honors. Arthit can't help, but smile looking at all the innocent, happy, and hopeful faces. He sees himself graduating, and Kongpob is crying in the corner. How come he didn't notice Kongpob crying before? His life continued to rewind. It's Kongpob's first day as head hazer. He sees himself hiding behind the double doors smiling proudly. He also noticed how captivated all the freshmen were with his boyfriend.
Suddenly, the rewinding slowed down. They were at the beach. Arthit looked around, and Past was still holding his wrist.
"Does this place look familiar to you?" Past asked.
Arthit nodded. "I think Kongpob is about to give me his gear." Arthit said this smiling.
They walked forward, and Arthit sees himself walking up to Kongpob with a drink. He was about to duck, but Past stopped him.
"Nobody can see, or touch us."
"Oh." That was all he can say. He only wanted to watch Kongpob give him his gear again.
Arthit walked closer, and studied Kongpob's expression up close. He didn't realize at the time that Kongpob was actually nervous. He saw how Kongpob was nervously rubbing his gear between his fingers inside his pocket. Kongpob always came across as cheeky, and confident to him.
It took many years for him to get over his own shyness, and get used to Kongpob's constant teasing. But nowadays, it's rare for Kongpob to try to tease him. In matter of fact, he can't remember the last time Kongpob bothered to tease him since he has become immune to his cheesy words. He felt a little pang in his heart. So much has changed.
"P'Arthit, give me your palm."
Arthit watched himself looking at Kongpob curiously, and opened his palm.
Kongpob takes his gear out, and Arthit's heart races like it was happening to him all over again.
"Why do you return it to me?" Arthit watched himself looking upset.
He facepalms himself. He still can't believe that he didn't know what the gear meant when a freshman like Kongpob did.
"I'm not. I just want you to take care of it." Kongpob looked at Arthit, willing him to understand.
"Why do you want me to keep it?" Arthit now looked confused.
"Oh. P'Arthit doesn't know the meaning of it? I thought you knew. Well then, you can ask P'Deer about it."
Arthit smiled, and wished he could touch Kongpob, and give him a kiss.
"So, this was a happy moment?" Past asked.
"Yes. This is the moment Kongpob gave me his heart. I wish I wasn't so dumb at the time. It was only after we came together that I realized I had feelings for him very early on. I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. He caught my attention on the first day of hazing, and my eyes were always searching for him ever since."
Past nodded, and grabbed Arthit's wrist again.
They were now standing on the Rama VIII bridge. Arthit looked at Past, and then looked at Kongpob and him talking. He was listing his flaws, and Kongpob said he would still accept him.
"You should turn around. I'm about to kiss him. It's a private moment." Arthit told Past.
"There's nothing I haven't seen before." Past chuckled.
Arthit almost felt like he shouldn't look, but he couldn't help himself.
"Look, I was so smooth. See how he smiled against my lips." Arthit praised himself.
"I thought you didn't want me to watch." Past raised an eyebrow at him.
"Well, they can't see us." Arthit shrugged.
"So, was this a significant moment to you?"
"Yes. This is the moment I confessed to Kongpob that I too had feelings for him. It was also our first kiss. It was one of the very few times I shocked Kongpob." Arthit said proudly.
Past grabbed Arthit's wrist again. They are now at the rooftop where the Thank You Seniors party was held. Everyone had already left, leaving just Kongpob and Arthit kissing on top of a picnic table. Arthit had just announced their relationship to his friends and all those at the party.
"You really are a pervert. Why do you keep coming to our kissing moments? I swear if you go to any more intimate moments, I'm going to knock the spirit out of you."
"Hahaha....is that a threat? I don't choose where we stop in time. Arthit, these are significant moments that have been imprinted on your soul. So, why do you think this was important to you?"
Arthit puffed out a breath of air, and turned back to the scene in front of him.
"It was at this party that I announced to our friends and classmates that we were officially dating. I was very happy, because I made him happy."
Past once again grabbed Arthit's wrist.
"I don't understand P'Arthit. Why can't we move in together? We spend so much time running between our two places."
"What about when our parents visits? Wouldn't it be weird that your college senior is suddenly living with you?"
"I've already graduated for two years now. Don't you think it's time to let my parents know that we are more than PhiNong?"
"I'm sorry, but I'm not ready yet. There's a lot more to life than romance. We are adults now. We need to prioritize our goals and responsibilities. Right now, we should focus on our careers. You may already be set to be the future CEO, but I've got a ladder to climb."
Arthit watched Kongpob walk out of his old apartment, and slammed the door behind him. It was the first time their fight lasted more than a month.
"So what happened after this?" Past asked looking at Arthit watching himself climb into the bed pulling the covers over his head.
"I went to sleep." Arthit said shrugging his shoulders.
"What? How could you sleep? How did you guys make up?" Past asked with an incredulous look.
"I found Kongpob drunk, and crying my name outside my door in the middle of the night one month later. When he sobered up the next day, he apologized for being immature. I forgave him, and that was it."
What Arthit didn't say was that he was so relieved that Kongpob had came back to him that night. He was on his last straw. He was actually ready to march over to Kongpob's house to apologize, and do whatever Kongpob wanted. He couldn't bear the silent treatment any longer, but luckily he didn't have to. This was also the fight that made Arthit realize that he had the upper hand in their relationship. Over the years, similar fights like this one had occurred every now and then, but they ended very much just the same.
Of course Arthit chose his battles wisely whenever they had fought. But deep down, he knew he would get his way, and Kongpob would give in eventually. So, over the years, he conceded less and less. And eventually, it was his way or the highway.
"Arthit, these are all imprinted turning points on your soul, and they all revolve around one person. This person is obviously very important to you. That is all I've gathered from our time together. And now our time together must come to an end. My brother will come for you soon."
Past grabbed Arthit's wrist again.
And before Arthit can say anything, his past was fasting forward in front of him. And suddenly he was alone under his covers again in his room. The lights were still on, and it was 5 am.
