Chapter 4
Simon took the grilled cheese he had just made and moved towards Clary's room, pivoting around the room full of paintings on every corner. He almost knocked over a cup full of paint brushes and, to Simon's horror, water. He stopped in his tracks, eyes on the swaying cup. He sighed in relief when it stopped its moevement. "Damn Frays." he mumbled, thankful that Jocelyn wasn't home. He carried the plate to Clary's room successfully, seeing a fidgeting redhead down on her bed when he entered. "Finally." she said, reaching out her hands to take the grilled cheese. Simon handed it to her an eyed the cast on her leg. "How is it?" he asked, taking a piece of the bread. Clary hit his hand and glared at him. "Itches like a bitch." she said, taking a huge bite of the food, the cheese dragging out. Simon huffed out a laugh, taking Clary's phone that binged.
"Lewis." she warned, but Simon unlocked the phone with his thumb and smirked. "Isabelle sends her 'warmest' regards." he said smugly and Clary groaned. "Please tell me that's not a nude." she said, covering her reddening face with a hand. "She sends you nudes? You lucky son of a bitch." Simon stated, amused. He threw the phone at Clary, who opened the simple 'get well soon' message from Izzy. The redhead threw a pillow at him, which Simon caught, tisking her. "Is that any way to treat a friend who is taking care of his sickly and frankly annoying bestie?" Simon asked, smiling at Clary. She rolled her eyes, laying back on the pillows. "I can't stand being a prisoner." she declared, scrolling her Instagram. "Well, you can always paint. God knows there are not enough canvases lying around in your house." Simon replied sarcastically, sitting on the chair behind Clary's desk and took a framed photo in his hands. It was taken back when they were in senior year, Clary's hair were in a ponytail and she was smiling, showing her braces. Simon was wearing his glasses, but he, too was smiling. They looked happy.
"Remember that? Just after we had taken the picture, Larry punched Jacob in the face and Ms Mckinley almost had a fit. She was so mad." Clary said, a small smile on her lips. Simon sighed, putting down the photo and closing his eyes briefly, smiling too. "Yeah, and then you said 'Senior year and only now something exciting happens'." Simon remembered. The redhead laughed, forgetting her cast for a moment, which resulted her moving it too fast, trying to bend it, which in turn made her wince in pain. "I can't believe you've never broken a bone before." Simon stated, coming to lie down next to her. Clary huffed. "It's a sprain. And not all of us are as clumsy as you, Simon Lewis." she said, resting her head on his shoulder, while Simon inspected his nails that he had decided to color in dark blue. Magnus was really rubbing off on him.
"Hey, about tonight. Isabelle said she'll keep me company so..." Clary started and Simon smirked knowingly. "So I'll make myself scarce." he said, not letting Clary finish. She smiled gratefully. "Thanks, Lewis. Not that I don't want to hang, but..." she continued but again, Simon beat her to it. "I know, Fray. It's cool. But when you stop coming to our weekly training sessions, then I'll know you've completely replaced me." he said mournfully and Clary shoved his shoulder. "Shut up. And besides, I can't train for a few weeks now." she declared, looking sad. "Don't worry, Isabelle will keep you fit in other ways." Simon smirked, earning a glare from Clary, who shoved him forcefully. For such a small girl she was really strong. Simon yelped when he fell off the bed. Just as he peeked up over the edge, Jocelyn knocked on the door frame. "Hey, guys. I guess you didn't hear me calling. I've got lunch for you, it's pizza." she said, nodding at them and revealing two square boxes.
"I think I might be in love with your mom, Clary." Simon said, smiling at Jocelyn and taking one of the boxes eagerly. Jocelyn blushed as Clary shouted 'Simon, gross!'. The brunette laughed, taking a slice and Clary took one, too, even though she just had a grilled cheese.

When Simon walked home, he whistled a tune. He had a free night and wondering what to do, he picked up his phone, turning it in his hand. Maybe he could call Jace? He hadn't seen him for a few days know, because he had been keeping Clary company, but he...missed hanging out with him. Which was extremely weird, because they'd just met. He pondered whether or not to push the call button when there was an incoming call.
"Hey stranger!" Simon answered it. "Simon! Where are you?" her sister Becky asked with a nervous voice, making Simon alert instantly. "Heading home. Why? What's wrong?" he asked, settling into his 'protective brother' mode. "Oh nothing, I just need to talk to you. Actually, can we meet up? it's important." she said, trying to sound light but Simon knew something was up. "Becks, what's going on?" he asked sternly, but Becky just groaned. "Si, please, let's talk when we meet okay? When are you free?" she asked and Simon pinched the bridge of his nose. "Jesus. Fine. Today and tomorrow, but then I have to go to work." he replied, looking around the street, almost visualizing his sister standing in front of him. He hadn't seen her in months. Well, not in person, anyway. Video calls were just not the same. "Tomorrow, at noon. I'll come to your place." his sister said and before he could protest, that Jordan was probably there, she hung up.
He let out a breath and scrunched up his nose. His sister was a piece of work, that's for sure. His mind was sensing something was off, but he stopped himself. He had a tendency to overthink things. When he was reaching to open their apartment door, his phone buzzed again, this time it was a text from Magnus.
"Game night tonight? You can bring your boyfriend."
Simon rolled his eyes, letting out a huff.
"Cool. I'll bring the beer. 6? And he's not my boyfriend. But I'll ask."
He put away his phone and opened the door. Checking the wall mounted clock, he saw that it was just past 3. "Jordan?" he called, listening to any sounds. A muffled sound came from their music room, so he took towards it, peeking his head in, in case Maia was also there. Jordan was alone, with the guitar in hand and a pencil in his mouth, a paper set in front of him on the note's stand. "Hey." he mumbled through the pencil, strumming the chords lightly. Simon stepped in and took a seat at the drums. He always wanted to know how to play, but he was decent at best. He fumbled with the sticks and then glanced at Jordan. "What you doing tonight?" he asked his roommate, who put the pencil down, finally looking up. "Date night with Maia. Why?" he asked, curious.
Simon shrugged. "We're having a game night at Magnus'. Thought you'd want to come." he replied, and Jordan smiled. "Well, tell them I said hi." Jordan answered, getting up and setting down the guitar. Simon hit the drums a few times and then gave up. "Actually, can I ask you a favor?" he then said, getting up from behind the drums. Jordan stilled, looking at him. "Yeah, sure. What's up?" he said sincerely. Simon smiled. "Becky's coming over tomorrow, at noon. Maybe you could stay at Maia's tonight? And come back tomorrow night? I know it's weird to ask but she seemed like there's something on her mind and..." Simon started to ramble so Jordan came over and patted his shoulder, silencing him. "Dude, it's fine. I practically live with Maia anyway. And you haven't seen Becky in ages, I'm glad to give you some bonding time." Jordan smiled widely and Simon sighed in relief. "I didn't want to sound like I'm kicking you out or something." Simon mumbled.
Jordan laughed. "Like you'd ever be able to." he said, making Simon glare at him, but he was smiling. Then he fished his phone out, while they both made their way to the kitchen and Jordan started the coffee. He thought a little and then put the phone back down. A minute later he picked it up again, only to set it down a second later. "Dude, what's with the fidgeting?" Jordan eyed him, setting a mug in front of him. Simon sighed. "Magnus said to bring Jace. Only, we've known each other for like, days. Don't think it's a good idea." he replied, trying to sound as careless as possible. Jordan smiled wickedly. "Well, by the looks of it, you want him there." his roommate said, flashing a grin. Simon rolled his eyes. He took the mug and pointed a finger at Jordan. "If anything, I might want him under me." he retorted, making Jordan choke on his sip of coffee.
"I didn't need to hear that." he mumbled, wiping his chin and Simon laughed. "You're worried that he'll think this is getting serious?" Jordan asked and Simon nodded half-heartedly. "Is it?" Jordan asked again and Simon glared at him. "No way, dude. We just met. And you know me. I don't do relationships like that." he let him know, setting his mug down and watching the steam rise from it. He did want to see Jace again. He insisted that it was merely because of the sexual attraction. But his mind kept telling him something else.
"Dude, you're zoning out again." Jordan pointed out, finishing his own coffee. Simon shook his head. "You really like him." Jordan stated and Simon made a protesting sound. "I don't. I mean, yeah, but because his hot and totally fuckable." he said nonchalantly. Jordan rolled his eyes, but Simon was saved from the lecture by Jordan's phone, that started ringing. He went to answer it and Simon stalked to his room, plopping down on the bed. He took his phone out again, flipping it in his hand. This is ridiculous, he thought, pulling up his chat with Jace.
"Hey. Game night at Magnus' tonight, you in?" he texted and then set his phone down. After a few minutes, he took out his laptop and started to search for his playlist, when his phone buzzed.
"Sounds fun. What time?" came the reply and Simon found himself smiling. He made himself stop almost immediately. What's with you, Lewis, he thought to himself. He texted him the address and the time and then clicked his phone closed. He put on his playlist, shut his bedroom door and started to choose his outfit.
***
After deciding on simple black jeans and a dark green T-shirt, he eyed himself in the mirror. His hair was done up and he decided against the eyeshadow. But he had changed his nailpolish from dark blue to black and his hands were covered in the leather bracelets. It was causal enough for him and he inspected his lip ring a little more, making sure it wasn't infected. When he leaned in to the mirror to look, he remembered how Jace had leaned in to him. 'I've never kissed anyone with a lip ring before', his words echoed in Simon's head. He felt a small shiver run down his spine when he thought about Jace's lust-filled eyes. He shook his head again. Something was definitely wrong with him.
He made a detour to get the beer and then knocked on the door. He was almost sure that Clary was already there and sure enough, the redhead opened the door, with Isabelle by her side. "I've got it, okay? I'm not a cripple." she huffed on her crutches, while Isabelle stared at her in a loving way. She kissed her temple. "Suit yourself, babe." she said and waved at Simon, turning on her heel and stalked back to the living room. Clary waved him in. "So, Magnus interrupted your alone time with Isabelle, huh?" Simon asked, amused. Clary rolled her eyes, jumping on her one good leg. "Yep. But we didn't mind. I wanted Isabelle to get to know them more." she replied, and she looked like she meant it. Simon set the beer on the table and Magnus came over. He swooped in, kissing Simon's cheek and he shrieked. "Hey! I would've been okay if Alec had done that, but not with you, Mags!" he shouted, scolding him, but Magnus just laughed. Alec, who had been carrying bowls of food, turned slightly red. "Hi, Simon." he said in a dismissive tone and Simon winked at him. "You love me and you know it." the brunette announced, making Alec roll his eyes, but there was a smile playing on his lips.
The doorbell rang and Clary looked at it in confusion. "Are we expecting someone else?" she asked. Before Simon could reply, Magnus skipped to the door. "It's Simon's boyfriend!" he loudly announced, making Clary look at Simon in shock. "I- he's not, Mags!" Simon shouted, but Magnus stuck out his tongue at him. He opened the door, revealing Jace, and Simon's breath got caught in his throat. He looked just as hot as ever, his ripped jeans fitted him all too well and the white T-shirt showed his muscles underneath. The golden hair were carelessly falling around his face and he was smiling, his different colored eyes finding Simon immediately. "Hey, Magnus. I'm Jace." he said, reaching out his hand to Magnus, who took it, but who had seemed to have lost his ability to talk. Alec swooped in. "Hi! I'm Alec. This is our home, come on in." he said, a little too formally in Simon's opinion, but Jace smiled, nodding. He came in and Magnus rushed to Simon's side. "He is freakishly hot! Why didn't you warn me?" he said, fanning his hand. Alec eyed him suspiciously. "Oh, Alexander, I'm only joking. Kind of." Magnus said, smiling at his boyfriend.
Simon rolled his eyes, but watched as Jace introduced himself to Isabelle and Clary, who he'd already met briefly. Then, the golden god came towards Simon and, without hesitation, leaned down and kissed Simon's cheek, making Simon blush. "Hey, babe." he said softly, but he was smirking. He knew exactly how he was embarrassing Simon, and the brunette vowed to get back at him. Alec's eyebrows shot up while Clary's were so high they were no longer visible. Isabelle just smiled brightly, while Magnus seemed to want to say something. "Let's sit down!" Simon shouted a little too loudly, making Jace chuckle. They went around the table and Alec distributed the beers. Jace was sitting a little too close to Simon, his hand on the back of the couch above Simon's shoulders, not touching, but Simon could feel his presence all too well.
"I won!" Jace yelled victoriously, after they had all counted their money. "God, I've never been in so much debt at Monopoly before." Isabelle grumbled, shaking her head. Clary kissed her forehead. "You're just terrible at this game, sorry babe." she said, making Isabelle glare at her. Simon laughed as Magnus stuck his tongue out at Jace who was doing a happy dance. Well, as much as one can do on the couch. "Let's play charades?" Alec suggested. Clary groaned loudly but Simon clapped, his eyes shining mischievously. "What?" Magnus asked, eyeing the redhead. "You guys don't know Simon like I do. He's an expert at this game." she said, clearly not okay with playing the said game. Jace put his arm around Simon, and the brunette stilled. "That's why Simon is on my team." he announced and Simon laughed.
They quickly realized that Simon was indeed really good at it, but to their surprise, so was Jace. In the end, it was down to them and Alec and Magnus, since Magnus was also pretty good at it. "A surgery? A heart surgery!" Alec yelled and Magnus clapped, jumping up and down, throwing away the pencil and kissing Alec. "That's it, they won!" Clary yelled and stuck her tongue out at Simon. "Fray, you lost too, remember?" he said, rolling his eyes. Clary just smiled. "Yeah? Don't take this away from me, Simon. YOU lost!" she exclaimed and Jace laughed at Simon, who sat down on the couch and crouched lower.
"How about we play truth or dare?" Isabelle asked, handing out their third round of beers. "Oh, yes please!" Magnus yelled but Alec eyed him. "You always make the stupidest dares." Alec said, making Magnus pout. "He's right, you know." Simon said. "Suck up." Magnus pointed at Simon and the brunette chuckled, winking at Alec, who again, rolled his eyes. "What's going on?" Jace asked, his eyes going from Magnus to Alec to Simon. Clary smirked. "Oh, it's a thing they do. Or Simon does." she said, waving her hand dismissively. "Yeah, he pretends to hit on my boyfriend every once in a while, agreeing with him on everything." Magnus huffed out, glaring at Simon. Alec just looked like he wanted to fall underground. Simon laughed but stopped when Jace frowned at him. He leaned closer to Simon, making the brunette still attentively. "Not sure I like that." Jace stated casually, his voice care-free but his eyes, that bore into Simon told him something else. He stared at him possessively and Simon shivered a little. "I like him." Magnus stated after a pause, pointing at Jace. They all laughed and just like that they were back to talking.
Simon noticed that Jace and Isabelle fit into their group like they were there all along. Watching as Jace bickered with Alec and Isabelle, it seemed like they had known each other for ages. Magnus seemed to like Jace, too, Simon only prayed it wasn't because of his good looks. Magnus loved Alec, but that didn't mean he didn't appreciate a fine specimen when he saw one. Alec seemed to notice this, but the more the night progressed, the more they became friends. Simon also found Isabelle to be very easy to talk to. She got spunk, she spoke her mind but she was extremely sweet when mentioning Clary and Simon gave her his blessing in his mind.
"Alright, Jace, truth or dare?" Magnus asked. They were all a little drunk now, and Isabelle was still giggling uncontrollably over the last dare that Magnus had Simon do - kiss Clary. Simon still had uncomfortable shivers from it, Clary was like a sister to her. "Dare." Jace said happily. Magnus eyed him and then smiled wickedly. "Do a handstand." Magnus said, and Jace scoffed. Simon scolded Magnus mentally. Looking at Jace and his well-built physique, there was no question he could do it. Just as Jace got up, Magnus put a hand on his chest, stopping him. "On these two empty beer bottles." he finished, handing him the said bottles and smirked, like he had just told the best joke ever. Alec's mouth went open. "He can't do that." Isabelle stated, her voice full of disbelief. "I don't know...if he gets the balance right, he could." Clary said, thoughtful, like she was doing the math in her head. Simon knew perfectly well she could've been drunk but her math was always on point.
Jace looked at Magnus in disbelief. "What, can't do it?" Magnus teased, and Jace rolled his eyes. "Alright, might as well give you a show, huh?" Jace asked and to Simon's and apparently, Magnus' surprise, he took off his shirt and threw it somewhere on the couch. Magnus' eyes went comically wide and even Alec's jaw dropped. Isabelle wolf whistled and Simon laughed out loud. Jace winked at him and he felt a blush creep up his neck. The blonde took the two bottles and set them on the floor. Simon held his breath unconciously, watching him set his hands on the bottlenecks and his muscles strained on his arms. Magnus whistled. "Damn." was all he said and then, as if he realized he had said it out loud, turned to Alec real quick. To his surprise, Alec was watching Jace, too and nodded. "Yep, damn." he said simply and Simon had to laugh again.
Clary and Isabelle screamed and Simon whooped when Jace pulled himself up, perfectly still on the bottles. Magnus and Alec tilted their head, watching him and Simon took a picture of all of them. When Jace had come down and reached for his shirt, Simon let out a disappointed sound. Jace laughed, pulling it on and then went to him, kissing his cheek. "You can see me without a shirt as much as you want, later." he stated, so that only he could hear and Simon felt himself get a little hot at the thought. Thankfully, Clary clapped her hands, making him shake out of his daze. "Alright, let's go!" she said, looking at Jace expectantly. "Clary, truth or dare?" Jace asked her and she went for the truth. "Weak." Simon pointed at her but she just stuck her tongue out at him, making him raise his eyebrows. "Real mature." he said, but Jace interrupted. "Who do you like more, Simon or Isabelle?" he asked and Clary gasped. "You can't ask me that!" she stated but Simon was already hurt. He put a hand to his heart and pretended to be wounded. "Fray, you've known me for over 15 years. You've known Isabelle for like 2 days!" he shouted and Magnus laughed, Alec's mouth twitched as he was trying not to burst into laughter like Magnus.
Jace seemed happy about the whole thing, but Simon glared at him. "It's you're fault that our friendship is over." he said. "What? It's not over!" Clary exclaimed and Isabelle laughed. "It's fine, Clary, I knew you'd leave me eventually." Simon said, still acting like it was the end of the world. When Clary finally understood that Simon was messing with her, she threw a pillow at him and stated that she will, from now on, call Magnus her best friend. Magnus didn't seem too pleased, but Simon looped an arm around Alec's. "Fine, then Alexander is mine." he said, making Alec shove him and he fell over, laughing. "Don't call me that, Si. Please, I'm begging you." Alec said, desperate. Magnus glared at Simon, who gasped, trying to breathe. "Oh, I love it when you beg, Alec." he teased and Magnus launched at Simon, who stood up and proceeded to run away from him, while Magnus chased him around the apartment, making the others laugh even louder.
"Alright, Simon, truth or dare?" Clary asked, when they had finally settled down. "Dare, obviously." Simon said and Clary smiled wickedly. Her eyes found Alec on his right and Jace on his left. "Oh, no." Magnus said, his eyes following the redhead's gaze. "Oh, yes." Clary stated. "Oh...no!" Isabelle shouted and Jace looked at them in confusion. "Simon, I dare you to kiss a person and slap a person on your right and your left, you choose who gets what." she said and Isabelle squealed in delight. Jace looked at Simon, like it was an obvious pick and Alec's eyes widened. "Hold on...Hold on!" he said and now Simon laughed. He put on his thoughtful face. "Now, I'd finally get to kiss Alec. So that's like a huge bonus. But I don't know if Jace has deserved a slap..." Simon pondered and Magnus waved his hands. "No way are you kissing my boyfriend, Lewis!" he shouted angrily, while Jace's head turned to him as well. "You're kidding, right? You're not seriously going to slap me?" Jace asked, but there was a small smile playing on his lips. "Would it help if I'd slap you and kiss you afterwards?" Simon asked, hopeful. He really wanted to embarrass both Magnus and Alec. Jace laughed, shaking his head.
Simon looked to Alec, who looked terrified and to Jace, who just crossed his arms and waited, with a smug look. "Oh, alright." he said and quick as lightning, slapped Alec right across the face. Alec barely even moved, surprising Simon with his great self-control. Magnus however, almost jumped him. Alec stopped him, restraining Magnus, but he was smiling. "You did not just slap my boyfriend!" he yelled and Simon leaned back so Magnus couldn't reach him. "What was I supposed to do? You wouldn't let me kiss him." he stated, making Magnus groan. Alec mouthed a 'thank you' behind Magnus and Simon smirked. When Alec had soothed down his boyfriend, the grumpy Magnus crawled onto Alec's lap, where he remained for the rest of the night. Jace was leaning back on his hands, sitting on the floor. "Well?" he looked at Simon expectantly. Suddenly, the brunette was well aware of all the people in the room. Clary watched them in amusement. Simon sighed and crawled closer to Jace, who didn't move. "Maybe try to be less smug about this?" Simon asked, before he leaned closer. Jace's smile grew wider as he studied Simon. "You picked me." he said and Simon rolled his eyes at the victorious note in his voice. "Oh, shut up, you idiot." he said and leaned in the last inches, connecting their lips.
As soon as they kissed, Jace's mouth opened and he let Simon in, which the brunette took full advantage of and swiped his tongue over Jace's lower lip, making Jace gasp in surprise. The blonde's hands went to his back and Simon shuffled onto his lap, wrapping his legs around his torso. Jace bit down on his lip ring and Simon suppressed a moan when he realized, they were still in the living room. "Get a room!" Isabelle yelled, followed by Clary and Magnus whistling and Simon pulled back, a smile on his face. Jace's eyes were intense and Simon could feel his hot breaths against his face. Jace smelled like the sea, for some reason. Simon inhaled in, before he left the crook of his neck, but not before nibbling on it just a little. Jace's eyes were flaming when he watched Simon. "That's not fair." he said quietly but Simon only laughed, when he moved away from his lap, secretly enjoying the friction it caused.
"All is fair in love and war, darling." Simon replied, making the blonde roll his eyes in amusement, but Simon saw his lips curl into a beautiful smile. He couldn't help but think, where this would go. He was dying to find out.
***
When Simon turned on the coffee machine the next afternoon, waiting for Becky, he pondered whether or not he should ask her to go shopping with him. It was a pain, to be honest, but he needed new jeans and Becky had great fashion sense. It was better than to ask Clary, or worse, Isabelle, as Simon found out, because both of them were shopaholics. At least Becky stood to the one task she was given and didn't derail from it by seeing cute shoes, or something.
He sat down behind the kitchen island, reading through a text from Jordan, that said he might come back around 8 in the evening. Simon texted him back and then sipped his coffee. He expertly burned his tongue, cursing aloud in the empty apartment and almost spilled the entire thing. He fanned his mouth with his hand and then took a glass of water. His phone binged and he opened it, revealing a text from Jace. He smiled as he read it.
"Last night was great. I like your friends, they're nice. But I'd love to get you alone again. You free tomorrow?"
Simon smirked at the the memory of last night. He had let Jace walk him home, like a gentleman he is, but when they got to Simon's apartment, and after making out against the wall like two horny teenagers, he had sent Jace home. Very uncharacteristic of Simon, but hey, he liked to watch them suffer. Jace seemed truly distraught by his actions, but the text meant that it was working. He wanted to see him again. Simon felt himself get hotter, just thinking about what he could do to Jace. Or what he'd let Jace do to him. Probably anything he wanted. The guy was too hot to be real. He groaned, trying to stop the flow of dirty thoughts going on in his head and texted him back, telling him he's free after school and work.
Just as he decided to text Magnus if he'd come shopping with them, his doorbell rang. Simon glared at the clock, mumbling. She was late, as usual. Once he opened the door, his sister flew in, hugging him so tightly, Simon's breath got knocked right out of him. The girl tightened her grip. "Simon! It's so good to see you!" she shouted against his ear, making him flinch. "Can't-breathe." he gasped and Becky let him go. "Sorry." she said, smiling. She looked tired and Simon noticed the bags under her eyes. She was wearing a beautiful flowery dress that reached the ground and her leather jacket was just as worn as Simon remembered it. "Come on, I made coffee." he said, grabbing her hand and making her sit down on one of the stools. Her brown locks fell to her shoulders and the rings in her hands clinked when she reached for the cup, inhaling the scent. "Ah, my one true love." she stated, and Simon smiled at her. After she had set the cup down, Simon eyed her.
"Rebecca, what's going on?" he asked. He noticed Becky started to fidget with the sleeves of her dress and she was looking down on the counter. He came towards her, covering her trembling hands with his, concern clouding his face. "Becky? Tell me." he pleaded and his sister finally looked up. To Simon's surprise and horror, there were tears in her eyes.
"I fucked up, Simon. I really did." she breathed out, looking up at the ceiling and Simon knew then, that this was going to be a long day, and possibly a long night.
