Chapter 3
"Thank you everyone, so much!" Simon shouted to the microphone, holding out his hand to block the sun that did it's best to blind him. He looked out at the crowd - there were families, couples, people with friends and people who were there alone and older people, who seemed to enjoy the warm weather they were blessed with on this autumn day. Simon smiled at them all from the small stage in the middle of a park, glancing once to Jordan, who was on his right and once to Maureen who was on his left. He gripped his bass guitar tighter and straightened his light brown T-shirt. His libra necklace hung loosely around his neck when he tilted his head to speak again. "This next one is our last, but we want to thank you all for gracing us with your presence, than you to the one's who made this all happen and invited us here. This is truly a beautiful cause and I wish you all good health and most of all, hope!" he said softly to the mic, his black glasses catching the sunlight.
He hadn't put on any make-up this time, and he wore his black jeans and a brown leather jacket, because he wanted to appear as real as possible for the charity event, which supported kids with cancer. There were many families with kids like that present today and he wanted them to see that he did actually care. He still wasn't sure how in the world he got picked to perform, but he couldn't have been happier to give some sense of happiness to these people and especially the adorable kids, who all looked up at them with bright smiles. Simon nodded at Jordan, who was holding his guitar, and at Maureen, who steadied behind the keyboards. They started playing and Simon sang.
Nobody knows how to say goodbye
It seems so easy 'til you try
Then the moments passed you by
Nobody knows how to say goodbye
Nobody knows how to get back home
And we set out so long ago
Search the heavens and the Earth below
Nobody knows how to get back home
While he sang, the people on the lawn, most sitting but also a few standing, were moving along to the slow song and a small cold breeze went past Simon, ruffling his hair and he closed his eyes for a moment. The blazing sun and the cold wind made him think of the sea in the summer, when he and Clary went surfing. He smiled fondly at the memory.
Through the darkness to the dawn
And when I looked back you were gone
Heard your voice leading me on
Through the darkness to the dawn
When he opened his eyes again, he let his eyes roam over the crowd. There was a family of four sitting near the park benches and the little girl was wearing a cute little pink raincoat and matching wellies. She was playing with her doll, making it dance to the song and Simon smiled at her. Next to them, on the bench, there was an elderly couple, smiling and holding hands. In the farther back, on a warm blanket was a mother with a daughter, the child couldn't have been more than 10 years old, but she had no hair and had tubes coming from her nose, but she smiled the brightest smile at Simon, who felt sad all of a sudden, but smiled back encouragingly. His eyes stopped at the old oak tree, when his eyes met with blue and brown and Simon's heart did a somersault.
Love is deep as the road is long
And moves my feet to carry on
It beats my heart when you are gone
Love is deep as the road is long
Jace was leaning on the tree, his denim jacket open at the front, revealing a white graphic T-shirt. Letting his eyes go lower, Simon saw he was wearing blue jeans and white sneakers. He had sunglasses propped up on his head and his golden hair fell freely around his face, shining in the sunlight that crept through the branches. He smiled, when Simon caught his eye and the other boy smiled back, feeling a very, very small blush creep up his neck from the intensity of the blond's eyes.
Nobody knows how the story ends
Live the day, doing what you can
This is only where it began
Nobody knows how the story ends
Nobody knows how the story ends
He finished the song, letting his voice fade out softly, and the crowd clapped, cheering for them. Simon smiled at Jordan and Maureen, who both looked like they were in heaven. They had never had a gig before and this was huge for all of them. "Thank you, you are all amazing! Stay safe and be well!" he yelled sincerely, before he made his way down the stage, while from the other side, Richard Glass, the one organizing the event, came up. Simon noticed that Jace had started to slowly make his way towards the stage as well, but before they could reach each other, Richard spoke.
"Amazing, big applause to Simon, Jordan and Maureen! Now I would like to end the event with a word from one of our funding members, the most important of them all, The Herondale Funding, who I believe, had a little surprise for you all!" he said, clapping and the crowd copied his movement. Simon raised an eyebrow at Jace, who shrugged and jogged to the stage. Of course he'd be there, they funded practically everything.
Jace looked so pure and white, somehow, when he went up on the stage, beaming down at everyone and he winked, quickly and sneakily, at Simon, before he started talking. "Thank you to Richard, for having me here as the representative of The Herondale Funding. My grandmother, the CEO of our company, has always told me that we must always look after those in need, because one day, we might be those people ourselves, and might be in need of their help, so be kind to one another. I think she is right in many ways, but I would add this - there are always bad things happening around us, always something that isn't going like we wanted it to, and things too awful to even mention. But good things are easy to spot, easy to do something good - like saying 'you look nice' to a stranger, giving a few dollars to a homeless person or taking the small, lost dog to the shelter, instead of leaving him out in the cold. So I hope that we all do at least one good thing every day, because trust me, it will come back to you, and if we do more good things than bad things, than eventually, together we can make the world a little better than it was yesterday. As for today's event, The Herondale Funding has decided to donate a million dollars to the Cancer Research Facility here in New York, as the one good thing we will be doing today. Thank you all!"
Jace finished speaking at everyone's mouth's dropped open, the clapping intensified and even Simon stared at him. He waved at the crowd, and stalked back down from the stage to where Simon was standing. "Hey, there. How's the jaw?" he asked, as soon as he was close enough so Simon could hear him over the people chatting excitedly and moving to their cars. Simon smiled, automatically touching his cheek. "Great. Can hardly see the bruising anymore." he replied, leaning on his guitar case. Jordan and Maureen were chatting in the backround, waiting for him. Jace eyed them and then looked back at Simon. "You have time? We could grab some coffee." he asked smoothly and put his hands in his pockets. Simon pondered the offer and then turned around. "Jordan!" he called and the boy came running towards him. He eyed Jace suspiciously, before he turned to Simon. "You guys can head home. Here, take this, too. I'll be home later." Simon said to Jordan, handing him the case. Jordan nodded but patted his shoulder slightly. "Alright, call me if you need me to pick you up or something." he said, his voice meaningful, to which Simon rolled his eyes.
Once he was gone, Jace smirked. "Your friend? Doesn't seem to like me much." he said to Simon, when they started walking towards a cafe down the street. Simon smiled at the question in there. "He's my roommate. Maia's boyfriend, remember?" he said, looking at the blonde. Jace's eyes showed recognition when he nodded. "Oh, right. Jordan." he replied. They reached the cafe and Jace opened the door to Simon, who entered and chose a corner booth. When Jace had sat down, Simon decided to ask. "So does your grandmother always send you to these events?" he wondered, looking at the blonde. Jace smiled. "Not always, but mostly me. She says I am good for the image and whatnot. Plus, she know I actually care about what I do." he answered, his voice soft and sweet. Simon thought about it for a moment. As far as trouble goes, Jace didn't seem to be a lot of it. In fact, he seemed to be as innocent as they come. Well, in some ways.
"You were great, by the way. Your singing is incredible. All the kids loved you and I think I saw a few guys and girls swoon. Granted, they were all under 15, but still..." Jace said, earning a smack to the arm by Simon and laughing all the while. "Thanks. I didn't even believe it when I got the call to come and perform. I don't even know how they found out about me." he said and Jace shot him a look, as if not sure about whether or not he should be saying anything. The waitress came just as Simon asked 'what?', and Jace ordered for them and Simon's eyebrows shot up again, when Jace knew exactly what he drank. "Wait, how did you know...?" he asked, his voice suspicious.
Jace smiled, almost apologetically. "Actually, I suggested they call you. I saw your videos online. The coffee I just guessed." he said, trying to sound casual. Simon wasn't sure what to make of it. Then he smiled slightly. "Ah, I have my own personal stalker? Well, get in line, I've got a girl on my tail that could easily scratch your eyeballs out." Jace laughed at this, stirring sugar into his cup and Simon smiled widely. Jace's laugh was contagious and he loved the sound. "I'm sure I' worse." he said, making a serious face and Simon rolled his eyes, still smiling. When Jace was around, all he did was smile and it was making him feel weird. What the hell was the matter with him?
"So, you live with Jordan. How come?" Jace asked, finally done stirring his coffee. Simon sipped his and thought for a moment. "Well, it's not like I have the money to get a place on my own, since I'm working at a small deli and going to Uni. I've still got two years to go, including this one." he said, watching as Jace sipped his coffee and frowned, putting more sugar in it. Choosing not to point it out, Simon looked out the window. "Jordan and I have been friends since I started looking for a place and I saw his ad. He and Maia hadn't met yet. Actually, they met right after I had moved in. I bet Jordan is cursing me right now, he could be living with Maia for all we know." Simon continued, laughing. Jace's eyes were fixed on him as he studied him and Simon suddenly felt self-conscious. "And you and Clary?" he asked Simon after staring at him for a while. Simon swallowed and steadied his voice. Jace's eyes made him feel very...intense. "Friends since kindergarten, when she tried to make me eat sand on a dare. I shoved her into the sand head first and we've been besties ever since." he replied.
Jace laughed at that and shook his head. "What about you? You don't go to school, do you?" Simon now asked, searching Jace's eyes and the blonde stared at his cup. "Nope. Always been into the business with grandma. But I'd like to go to school. It'd be fun." Jace's voice seemed longing and Simon realized, Jace must've had a rough childhood. "Your grandmother raised you?" he asked, knowing a little about him from the news. "Yeah, my parents died in a car crash. My grandmother is great, she's just not...very motherly. But I love her." Jace replied, smiling fondly. Simon nodded, finishing his coffee. "Thank you for the coffee." he said, but he couldn't help but have a sad note to his tone. He didn't want to leave yet.
Jace seemed a little disappointed. "Oh, you're leaving?" he asked and Simon stilled, putting on his coat. "I mean, yes? Or do you not want me to?" he asked honestly and cocked his head, looking at him with the same intensity that made Simon's insides feel like butter, melting away. "No, I don't. We could take a walk at the park?" the blonde asked, the corner of his mouth shooting up. Simon sighed, knowing there was no way he was going to say no to the blonde god. He texted Jordan, telling him where he is, because who knows, maybe Jace really was a serial killer? I mean, the nicest one's always were, right? And Simon was lucky in that aspect. He stood up, raising an eyebrow at Jace. "Well?" he asked and Jace smiled, standing up. They stood in very close proximity for a second and Simon could feel Jace's breath against his face. His heart sped up.
Jace stepped back, set money on the table, ignoring Simon's protests and steered them out, putting his hand on Simon's lower back. Simon felt it and wondered what it would feel like to have his fingertips against his bare skin. He shook his head as they stepped outside and Jace removed his hand. They started towards the park and he sun was still high in the sky. "So, did it hurt?" Jace asked, when they turned on the small road leading to the pond. Simon looked at him in confusion and Jace smirked, reaching up to touch his own lower lip. Simon almost shivered at the gesture. He instinctively touched his lip ring and Jace stared at it. "A little. But, I think it was worth it, don't you?" he asked Jace, walking next to him so their hands were almost brushing. He felt a weird excitement building up, and he didn't understand it. He had countless of other relationships so why was Jace making him feel like a giddy schoolgirl?
Suddenly, next to a big oak tree, Jace stopped and looked at Simon. Simon also stopped, with a questioning face and almost startled when Jace turned to him, stepping a lot closer than necessary. He took a step back, hitting the trunk of the tree and Jace smiled, taking another step forward, so Simon had nowhere else to go. Jace was looking at him, his eyes roaming from his eyes to his lip and down his torso, then back up again until he reached his eyes again. "I don't know, why don't we find out?" Jace said and Simon's mind was so clouded, he barely registered that they were still talking about the lip ring. Jace's face was coming closer and Simon's breath hitched. Was he going to...?
Jace's eyes were so mesmerizing that he only vaguely noticed Jace's hand going around his waist and then, the blonde leaned in, brushing his lips against Simon's, but not kissing him. Even so, Simon could feel the sweet sensation, the tingling feeling that he always got when he was about to be kissed, but with Jace, he also felt a burning fire, which started from the place where Jace's lips touched him and went through his body, all the way to the place where Jace's hand was resting on his hip. The blonde still didn't kiss him, he let his tongue dart out and he licked at the lip ring, making Simon almost moan out loud. How was he doing this to him?
Jace smiled cockily and Simon rolled his eyes, grabbing Jace's shirt into his hand and pulling him forward, feeling the pull like magnets. Their lips met and Simon felt Jace sigh into the kiss. He moved so softly against Simon's lips, that he couldn't help but want more. It was like Jace was scared to kiss him any harder than the feathery one he was giving him now, but it was just as good for Simon, because he let his tongue roam to Jace's mouth, making the blond part his lips for him. Jace tasted like strawberries and coffee. He felt Jace's hand make its way under his jacket and shirt, letting his cool fingertips slide against Simon's hot skin, making Simon gasp slightly form the cold and Jace pressed him further against the tree. Then, Jace bit down very carefully and softly on Simon's lip ring and the brunette made a small noise at the back of his throat. Something was definitely not normal here. Simon felt Jace move his leg between his and he pulled back, his face slightly flushed. He noticed that he had put his hands around Jace's neck at some point.
He leaned his head back against the tree. "We're in a park." Simon stated, breathing heavily. Jace smiled. "I'm aware." he said and with that, he stepped back, leaving Simon feeling cold all of a sudden. Jace's cheeks were slightly red, but he ran a hand through his hair, smiling wickedly at Simon. "Totally worth it." he said, making Simon chuckle. He touched his lip ring with his tongue and Jace's eyes darkened. "Simon, like you said, we're in a park. So please don't do that." he said, his voice dripping with lust, low and dangerous and Simon swallowed, excitement flowing through his veins. He straightened, smirking at him and made his way past him, walking along the path they were on just minutes ago. He saw Jace following him from the corner of his eye. His mind was still foggy from how Jace kissed him.
"Simon?" Jace's voice drifted to him as the made their way to the small bridge over the pond. Simon stalled, leaning back on the railing at looked at the blond. "Sorry, what?" he asked and Jace smirked. "I said, would you consider coming to a black tie even with me?" he asked and Simon raised his eyebrow. "It's our company's event, meeting potential clients. It's boring mostly, but there are some great ideas usually and I'd love your opinion." Jace continued, now looking down at the water, like he was deep in thought. Simon was taken aback. "You would want my opinion? Why?" he asked incredulously and Jace's head snapped back up to him. His eyes were unreadable. "Why not? You seem like you'd know when people are talking shit. And there are a lot of those kind of people at this event." Jace replied, crossing his legs when leaning on the opposite railing.
Simon stared at him, trying to understand if he was joking, but Jace seemed genuine. His blond hair were loose and moving in the wind, making a strand fall to his face. His fingers drummed on the railing and Simon's gaze fixed on them for a moment, before drawing it back to Jace's face, that seemed expectant. "Okay." he said simply. "Okay?" Jace asked, almost like he didn't believe it. "Yep. Sure. I've got nothing better to do on...what day is it?" he asked, making Jace laugh, his head thrown back. "It's this Friday, 6 pm. I'll pick you up at 5.30." the blonde said, shaking his head in amusement. Simon nodded. He looked around the park, realizing they were the only people there, probably because it was a Sunday and the sun had suddenly disappeared, making way to some ominous, dark clouds. "Looks like it's going to rain." he stated, nodding towards the sky. Jace let his eyes move to the same direction and nodded in agreement. "Do you want to go home? I can walk you." he asked, making Simon shuffle. He didn't want to leave, which was a strange feeling for him.
After a few seconds, he felt Jace's hand touch his slightly and he looked up, seeing that the blonde had stepped a little closer to him. "Or I can show you where I live? We could watch a movie." he said, and it almost sounded like he was shy and uncertain. This gave Simon courage. "Sure." he nodded and Jace's face lit up. He indicated for Simon to follow him, as they made their way out of the park, feeling first drops of rain fall unto them.

"So, make yourself at home." Jace stated the overused sentence, placing his jacket on the rack, with Simon following him. Jace had a huge apartment on the 5th floor right in the middle of the city, the living room alone was a s big as Jordan's and Simon's apartment. He whistled when he walked into the room. The kitchen was open and there was a bar in it, the cupboards red and black. The living room had a huge flat screen TV with a playstation peeking out from under it. The white couch was also big, with very big and fluffy pillows that Simon knew were as soft as a kitten's fur. The carpet under the couch was also red but the walls were white, making the room look light and big. An ancient looking clock ticked at the corner of the room and two huge windows revealed the upcoming thunderstorm over New York.
Jace was standing next to the fridge, taking out beers. "Want one?" he asked and Simon nodded. He watched at Jace opened them with a lighter, his muscles flexing and he was pretty sure he was drooling. Jace looked up and Simon quickly fixed his gaze elsewhere. "So that's a...?" he asked, his voice fading in the end, peeking over to another room. "Dining room, yep." Jace replied, handing him his bottle and indicating from him to sit on the couch. Simon nodded and plopped down, waiting for Jace to turn on the TV. He sat down next to Simon, a little too close than it was actually necessary, but Simon didn't mind. He'd played this game a thousand times before, but with Jace, it seemed new and interesting.
"What do you want to watch?" the blonde asked and Simon shrugged. "You pick." he said and Jace smiled. To Simon's huge surprise, he put on Avengers. Smiling at the brunettes astonishment he kicked his feet up on the coffee table. Simon, who was now feeling courageous and also adventurous, put his feet over Jace's, leaning onto the armrest of the couch, so they were halfway on his lap. Jace's eyebrows rose but he said nothing as he pressed play.
They chatted like they had known each other forever. Simon found it so easy to talk to Jace, the blonde was comforting and funny, understanding and mocking at the same time, he knew just how much sarcasm was enough and he could decipher Simon in no time. At some point, Jace had let his hand fall down onto Simon's legs, moving them up and down like he wasn't aware of it. Simon felt comfortable, although he was painfully aware of the movement, he chose to ignore it and just laughed, when Jace was telling him how he tried to watch the movie with his grandmother.
After the movie, Jace just put on a show that was running on TV and they kept talking. "So Isabelle and Clary, huh? They seem like perfect for each other." Jace said, when Simon had finished talking about their night at the Uni party and Wendy's. Simon nodded, setting down his second bottle of beer. "I think so. Clary seems absolutely smitten, and she's not like that usually. " he replied. Jace's hand moved higher on Simon's thigh and the brunette eyed him, but Jace just kept talking. "So, Magnus and Alec are also your friends? How did they meet, because, honestly, they seem really different from each other." Jace was saying, as his hand glided to dangerous heights, making Simon's breath hitch. "Jace..." he managed to say, when the blonde looked up at him through his lashes and Simon leaned up, surprising Jace and himself by kissing the blonde. It was just like the first time, only now Jace was kissing him harder, with more force. He opened his mouth and Jace let his tongue roam freely, making Simon sigh happily.
Jace pulled back, his hand still on Simon's thigh and he kissed the brunette's neck, softly and sweetly, making Simon's skin tingle. A phone rang, cutting through the air and Jace kept kissing on his neck, while Simon realized it was his. "Jace." he stated, like it was supposed to do something, but the blonde kept going along his skin, making him tilt his head back. "Let it go to voicemail." Jace said, his voice husky and low. He sucked on Simon's collarbone and he let out a small moan. "Jace...Come on." he said again, feeling the blonde smirk against his skin. He pushed him back slightly, taking his phone from the table and sliding the answer button, but Jace fell right back into their earlier position, with his lips now on Simon's jawline. "Hello?" Simon said, trying to sound as normal as someone could when they were being bitten and kissed in a force that was making him lose his mind. "Simon? Where are you?" Magnus' voice drifted to him and he tried to keep his voice steady. Jace left butterfly kisses on his jaw and made his way to his earlobe, biting it. "Um...at a friend's place. Why?" he replied, breathing in sharply. Magnus was silent for a moment and then he chuckled. "Are you fucking around again Lewis? Honestly, it's like you never stop." Magnus stated and Jace moved his hand a little, so it was sitting practically on Simon's crotch.
"I don't-what do you want, Magnus?" he asked. "Just wanted to ask if you are coming to the beach house on Friday." Magnus replied and Simon gasped when Jace glided his hand over his now painfully hard member. "I-I have a thing." he said absentmindedly, sending a glare to Jace who smirked like the devil he was. "I'm sure you do. The same thing probably trying to fuck you right now?" Magnus asked in a silky tone and Simon cursed when Jace put his hands around him, lifting him to his lap in a swift move. Damn, he was strong. "I- fuck. Ugh, I'll just come on Saturday okay, and meet you there?" he stammered, trying to stop the phone call. Jace smiled wickedly when he grinded his hips towards Simon. Simon let out a strangled noise and he heard Magnus chuckle at the other end. "That's not the only time you'll be coming." he stated, amused and Simon shouted "Bye, Magnus!" before hanging up quickly. He glared at Jace, who looked as innocent as ever. "What?" he asked and Simon rolled his eyes. "Magnus won't ever stop teasing me about that phone call." he replied, annoyed. Jace reached up, capturing his lips and making Simon melt to him. "Am I forgiven?" Jace asked as he pulled away. His plump lips looked swollen and it made Simon twitch in his pants. "Not yet, darling." he replied, grinding down on Jace making him gasp in surprise.
When Simon's phone rang for the second time, they both groaned loudly. "Does it ever shut up?" Jace asked annoyed. Simon smirked. He shuffled off his lap, making Jace protest, but he waved him off, picking the call from Clary up. "Simon, this is Isabelle." came a voice and Simon was at full attention. "Isabelle? Where's Clary?" he asked, holding a finger to Jace who looked like he was about to ask something. "She's right here, but she's badly hurt. She fell when we were coming from the movies. Some idiot with a bike almost ran her over and she must've twisted her ankle or something, jumping back and stumbling on the sidewalk." Isabelle replied and Simon could hear Clary say something in the backround. "I don't have a licence and you're the only one I though of calling this late." she said, her voice apologetic. Simon softened at this. "Don't worry, I'll be right there." he replied and hung up. He almost burst into laughter, seeing the disappointment on Jace's face. He reached out to his cheek, stroking it and Jace leaned into it, closing his eyes. "Best friend duty calls. I'm sorry." he said and Jace's eyes shot open.
Now he seemed more sad than disappointed and there was something in his eyes that Simon couldn't decipher. "Maybe it's for the best. I mean, we did just meet a few days ago." Jace said. Simon nodded. "Right. I don't know what came over me." he said, furrowing his brows. Simon let his hand drop and Jace looked at him. "Me neither. But I like it." he said clearly, making Simon's heart leap. "Me, too." he said, not sure why he was saying it. It wasn't like him. "I'll call you?" he asked, getting up and taking his coat. "You better, Lewis." Jace said, sending him to the door. When Simon turned around, he felt like kissing Jace goodbye, but stopped himself. Let's not make this weird, he said to himself. Jace smiled a little sadly and waved. "Bye, Simon." he said and Simon smiled back. "Bye, Jace." he replied and when the door shut, he felt his heart sink just a little. What was that?
