Chapter 12
"Simon! Jace!" Clary shouted and almost knocked Simon off his feet, jumping onto his lap. Simon barely maintained his balance. He heard Jace chuckle, but the blonde was also engulfed in a hug by Isabelle. "You two idiots had us worried sick." she said, smacking Jace's good arm. Simon thanked god for that. Isabelle had quite a strong arm. "Hey, who are you calling an idiot?" Simon asked, setting the redhead down. "Isn't it obvious?" Magnus asked, coming towards him and wrapping him in a hug. Alec approached them as well and nodded at Jace, giving him a hand which the blond took and shaked it. "Nice to see you two in one piece." he mentioned, a slight smile on his lips. "Wouldn't have guessed, since it's Jace were talking about." Magnus said, his voice a little sarcastic and Simon tensed. "Magnus." he warned, but the tan Asian shrugged his shoulders, sending a glare towards Jace. The group fell silent in Simon's apartment, and the brunette was just about to say something, when Jace cleared his throat. "Listen, I know you're all probably pissed at me. For ever getting involved with Simon, and for not acting fast enough back at the...hangar." he said and Simon could see his face was pained when he talked about the night Simon got shot. He moved closer to him but Jace raised his arm, indicating he wasn't finished.
"I am really sorry, truly. I care about Simon, more than you'd think, and I would never want him to be in any kind of danger. The fact that he came to practically rescue my ass is something I never even dreamed of. But you're not giving him enough credit, thinking he can't handle himself, because trust me, he can." Jace continued, sending a glare towards Magnus, who had huffed. Alec put an arm around Magnus, eyeing him to stop. Clary and Isabelle sent Simon a surprised look. "But for what it's worth, I would never want anything bad happening to Simon. I promise you, his life means a lot more to me than mine." Jace finished, his words hanging in the air and Simon felt the weight of them. He looked at Jace, surprised, and saw him looking back with a determined face, his eyes slightly squinted. He meant it and Simon's heart did a backflip. "Well." Isabelle said and Clary smiled. "I think that's a great apology." the redhead stated, looking at Magnus. He rolled his eyes, but approached Jace. Simon held his breath. He really didn't need his best friend and his boyfriend to be at each other's throats all the time.
Magnus reached out a hand and smiled at Jace. The blonde took it, and everyone exhaled. "See, Magnus can play nice if he wants to." Simon said, patting the man on the back. Magnus rolled his eyes, but Jace was smiling. Alec was smiling, too, and kissed his boyfriend quickly on the lips. "I'm proud of you, Magnus." he said and Magnus finally smiled the smile he usually does, broad and bright. "There's that smile we know and love! Alec is really doing great things with you." Isabelle said, smirking at them both and patting her brother on the back. "So, tell us everything!" Clary squealed and pulled Simon by the arm, making him fall on the couch with her. Jace stood next to him, and Simon pulled him down on his lap. "Hello." Jace said, when he found himself pressed against Simon's body. The brunette smirked at him and kissed his cheek. "Hey, gorgeous." he said and Jace went a little red, kissing Simon on the cheek as well. "Ugh, Jesus. Get a room. You're worse than these two." Clary stated and nodded towards Alec and Magnus. Alec went a little red but Magnus seemed proud, even. "No one is worse than these two." Isabelle announced, glaring at her brother and Magnus happily.
Isabelle set down cookies and sodas for everyone, before she sat down next to Clary, who wrapped and arm around her. They spent the night talking, and their friends gasped at how Simon had come in to save Jace. "I mean, I did save him afterwards, so really, who's the hero here." the blonde stated and Simon rolled his eyes. "What do you mean?" Isabelle asked, confused and Jace seemed to want to mentally slap himself. Simon hesitated. "Well, he got shot, kind of." he said. There was a pause and then Magnus did a noise that resembled a choked laughter. "You mean to tell me, that Simon got shot for you and now you got shot for Simon? The most romantic story I've ever heard." he said, earning a shove from Alec. "What?" Magnus asked and the girls glared at him, but to their surprise, Jace laughed. "I know right? It's ridiculous." he said and smiled at Magnus, who seemed to have forgotten his feud. After an hour, Jace shuffled a little, trying to adjust himself, when the pain in his arm made him wince. "Hey, you okay?" Simon immediately asked. "Jace? Do you need a painkiller?" Alec asked, noticing their conversation. Jace shook his head, trying to smile. "I'm fine, Alec. Thanks." he said, but Simon saw the pain right through his eyes. He clapped his hands. "Alright, not to be a dick, but I have to throw you out. My boyfriend is in pain and needs to rest that pretty little head of his." he announced, and Jace went red again.
"Boyfriend? So it's official?" Isabelle squealed. "They kind of almost died for each other, Iz. I don't think it can get any more official than that." Clary said and Magnus laughed. Simon winked at Jace, who smirked and got up, holding his arm. The others wished him well and hugged both of them, before making their way out, loudly chatting about the events that took place. Simon sighed deeply, when he closed the door behind them. "My god, I love those guys, but they are exhausting." he said, looking towards Jace, but he stopped, smiling. Jace was on the couch and he was leaning on the armrest, eyes closed and his breathing evened out. He was so cute, Simon could actually feel the heart eyes forming on his own eyes. He approached Jace and very gently, picked him up. He held him, walking to the bedroom, and looked at his face, that was so relaxed and peaceful, Simon prayed he wouldn't wake up before the morning. To his luck, Jace was a heavy sleeper.
***
Simon felt his legs trapped under something and he also noted, that they weren't cold like usual, when Clary stayed over. That girl always had cold feet. He shuffled his feet a little, feeling the warmth flowing through him and he stretched his muscles. Jace mumbled something against his shoulder and Simon smiled. He looked sideways, seeing Jace's eyes open now, sleepy and adorable. "Close your eyes and sleep. It's ridiculously early." the blonde grumbled, pulling the blanket over his head. Simon chuckled, wrapping his foot over Jace's torso and tried to pry the blanket off. "It's almost 10. You're like Magnus, he sleeps until noon." Simon complained, revealing the beautiful angel face from under. Although the angel had a frown on his face. Simon didn't like that. He leaned down and kissed his nose, which made Jace scoff and fight a smile that threatened to appear on his lips. "Come on, babe. Wake up." Simon begged, playfully running his nose along Jace's and then kissing the corner of his lips. Jace groaned and rolled over, straddling Simon. "Fine. I'm awake. Now what?" he asked, smirking and Simon laughed. "I could think of a few things that we could do." he stated causally and Jace's smile turned wider, it was almost wicked.
Simon could feel Jace's legs around him and he enjoyed the pressure of his body weight. He looked gorgeous and unearthly at the same time, looking down on him, his blonde strands of hair with the color faded slightly, and his eyes burning into him, studying him. Jace had an amazing aura around him, making Simon feel safe but excited at the same time, wondering what his next move will be. Whatever it will be, Simon knew he was going to like it. Jace leaned down, just as they heard a crashing noise from outside Simon's bedroom. Jace tensed and Simon eyed the bedroom door. He got up on his elbows, but Jace put a hand on his chest and a finger on his lips, indicating for him to be quiet. Simon strained his ears to hear anything else, but it was quiet. Jace got up swiftly and quickly, reaching for the drawer of the nightstand. He pulled out a hand gun and Simon raised an eyebrow. "When did you...?" he started, but Jace only said 'shh' and went towards the door. Simon scrambled after him, as Jace slowly opened the door. The apartment was empty. Jace lowered his gun to his side and creeped into the room, his eyes not missing an inch of the place. Simon noticed a picture frame on the floor, upside down. There were shards around it. Simon went towards it when Jace stopped him. "Wait. Put some gloves on first. And I'll go check Jordan's room. We're probably just being paranoid, but..." he said, letting his voice die at the end.
He seemed more tense and alert by the minute. Simon nodded and when Jace left to check the other rooms, Simon got a pair of gloves from the dresser next to the front door and kneeled on the floor. He recognized the frame but he picked it up still, turning it over and seeing the shattered glass and the picture behind it. It was him and Clary, on the day Simon got his car licence and they had gone out for their first roadtrip together. He swallowed hard, staring at it. He looked up when Jace got into the room. He shook his head. "Nothing." he stated and looked confused, staring at the picture. Simon put the picture back on the ground and walked to the front door. It was locked and he opened it. He turned around, watching Jace. The blonde stared at him with an almost fearful expression. "How did someone get in, when the door was still locked? And the windows are closed?" Simon asked, quietly. His mind was racing and he saw the gears in Jace's mind work as well. The blonde tapped his temple with the side of his gun and sighed, pacing. "Fuck. I knew he was still out there. I knew he would... And now he's coming after you? This is all my fault, I should've never..." Jace started rambling, his breaths quickening and he hit his temple with the gun again and again. Simon rushed towards the blonde, grabbing his hands and lowering the gun. "Jace! Stop. This is not your fault." he said, but Jace shook his head, staring at Simon in despair.
"If it weren't for me..." he said, but Simon stopped him. "You're talking about a time I would've never met you. And trust me when I say, I wouldn't trade meeting you for anything in the world. I was the one who killed Raphael Santiago. If anything, this is on me." he said. The blonde shook his head again, grabbing Simon's arm, almost painfully. "If anything were to happen to you..." Jace started but Simon quieted him, by kissing him softly. "Nothing will happen to me. We're going to catch him." he replied, smiling genlty. Jace shook his head. "I just don't get how he even got in. This is-" he said but Simon cut him off. "If I hear you say 'It's my fault' one more time, I'll punch you in the face. And I know how to do that properly now, so I'd watch it, if I were you." Simon snapped, looking at Jace angrily. The blonde finally smirked a little.
"What? You wouldn't." he said, but Simon raised and eyebrow, challenging him. He took the gun from Jace's hand and placed it on the couch. "And no playing with firearms in my home." he said sternly, and this time, Jace was the one who raised his eyebrows. "Oh?" he asked, standing a little closer to him. Simon noted that they were still both wearing only boxers. He didn't mind. "Shouldn't we address this Jonathan situation?" Jace asked him, but his voice was seductive. Simon smirked, pulling Jace against himself by the hips. "He can wait for 5 minutes." he stated and Jace kissed his neck. "5 minutes? That's not exactly what a guy wants to hear." he replied against Simon's skin. Just as the brunette was about to say something very filthy, the doorknob rattled and they heard keys in the lock.
Jace jumped back and reached for his gun but Simon put a hand on his chest, stopping him. "You think Jonathan would use keys?" he asked, and the door opened, revealing a chatting pair behind bags of groceries. "I'm just saying, you should've called first..." Maia was saying and dropped her jaw, seeing Jace and Simon half-naked in the living room. "Simon!" she yelled, rushing over to hug him, completely ignoring the fact that he wasn't wearing any clothes. Jace snuck the gun under a pillow quickly, while Jordan set down the groceries. "What are you guys doing here?" Simon asked, incredulous, letting Maia go. "We heard from the others that you were back. Oh, and thanks for letting us know, by the way." Jordan said in annoyance. Jace looked apologetic, Simon just stared. "Um." he said, looking at Jace. "I told you we should've called." Maia said to Jordan, winking at the boys.
Jace rubbed the back of his neck, aware of their naked state. "We'll just...get dressed now." he said sheepishly and took Simon by the arm, taking him to the bedroom, while Jordan and Maia laughed. When they were dressed, Jace stopped Simon before he got to the bedroom door. "Hey, let's keep the Jonathan thing between us right now. I don't want to alarm anyone until we know for sure it was him. We can send the picture to Luke so he could take prints. Though I doubt he'll find anything." he said and Simon nodded. "Right." he agreed, and with a deep breath, he opened the door. Jordan was already putting things into the fridge, while Maia was snacking on a croissant on the kitchen counter. "So, lovebirds. Tell us what you've been up to?" Maia asked, smiling and Simon went towards the kitchen, snatching the bread from her fingers and biting down on it.
While he kept the two occupied, Jace removed the gun and the picture from the floor quickly, putting them into his bag in Simon's room. When he returned, Jordan was laughing and Maia's face was full of disbelief. "I can't believe you, Simon Lewis, did all that." she said, shaking her head. Simon beamed at Jace, who came closer and wrapped an arm around him. "I couldn't leave Jace with that maniac. I mean, look at him." he said and winked at Jace, who rolled his eyes. Maia seemed overly happy at this, giggling and trying to steady herself on the stool. "I was thinking of having dinner tonight with everyone." Jordan said and Simon agreed loudly. Maia washed the dishes from yesterday and Simon felt like they had never been gone.
But Jonathan creeped back into his mind and he could tell Jace was also thinking about it. He was sitting on one of the stools, his face thoughtful and he was frowning. "Hey, Herondale. You know how to cook, help me make this marinade for the chicken." Maia stated and Jace shook himself out of the daze. Shaking his head towards Simon, who shared a worried look with him, he went towards the kitchen counter. He bumped Maia away from the cutting board playfully, and took the knife, swinging it expertly. "Let the master show you how it's done." he said, making Maia pout and Simon laugh, looking at him with a glint in his eyes. He could get used to Jace hanging around in his kitchen.
***
When the others arrived that night, Simon's mind was occupied with other things. He had phoned Luke and promised to deliver the photograph to him tomorrow, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. How did Jonathan get in? And what was he up to? Jace came up from behind him, enveloping him in a hug. He sighed, leaning his head back onto his shoulder. Jace's arms around him were strong and safe, and he felt relief. Turning around, he saw the blonde's worried gaze studying his face. "You okay?" he asked and Simon chuckled, moving to tuck a strand of loose hair behind Jace's ear. "I should be asking you that. How's the arm and shoulder?" he replied, kissing Jace's nose. The blonde smiled. "With you taking care of me? Couldn't be better." he answered and leaned in to press a kiss on his lips. Simon melted into the kiss, feeling the tingling sensation move from his lips to his cheeks and his neck, coloring it a slight red. Jace did wonderful things to him. "Hey, you two! You've got time for that later on, let's start eating!" Clary shouted at them from the table and Jace pulled back, resting his forehead on Simon's, who was grinning like an idiot. "You are killing me, angel." he said and Jace smiled at the nickname. "I wouldn't have it any other way." he replied, releasing Simon from his hold but took his hand, while walking over to the table. They sat down next to each other and started to reach for the plates.
"This chicken is amazing." Isabelle stated and everyone mumbled in agreement. "Get yourself a man that can cook." Simon said, laughing and Jace shoved his shoulder playfully. "So, how has life been, Jordan?" Simon asked, looking at Maia and his former roommate expectantly. Maia smiled, taking Jordan's hand. "It's great. The place we have is huge and for our two dogs it's like a mansion." Jordan stated, chewing on his bite of chicken. "Jordan and Maia bought a new place like last month." Simon explained to Jace. The blonde nodded and stared at the pair in delight. "That's sounds awesome." he said modestly and Maia beamed at him. "But were glad you're here, Simon can get a little lonely." she said, pointing her fork at him, and Simon acted offended. "I do not. And Jace doesn't live here." he said, pouting.
Jace's fork stopped in the middle of the air. He set it down slowly and then looked at Simon. "Well, what if I did?" he asked, eyeing him carefully. Simon stopped pouting and looked at him. "You mean...you'd move in?" he asked surprised, completely forgetting their friends. Jace nodded shyly and then stared at his plate. "I mean, that'd make saving your life a little easier if I'd get to keep my eye on you." he replied, smirking and Simon coughed. "You only want an excuse to see me naked in the kitchen at mornings." he said smugly and Alec choked on his water and Magnus had to pat his back, making the others laugh. "Right, that too." Jace replied, not embarrassed at all and Magnus eyed them. "So, did you guys just move in?" he asked, incredulous.
Everyone stared at them and Simon smiled at Jace, almost as if he was shy. He put his hand over the blonde's and smirked. "I think so?" he said and Clary cheered. "Well, I for one am glad." she stated, when Jace leaned over to kiss Simon's cheek. "Aw man, now we can't ever come over unannounced. Who knows what these two are doing when were not around." Jordan said and the girls laughed. "Come on, Alec and Magnus are worse and we barge in on them all the time." Clary said and Magnus stuck his tongue out at her. "Which, by the way, I have been meaning to discuss with you. Please stop doing that." Alec said, going red. Magnus smiled at him sweetly. "Oh, Alexander. You're so sweet and innocent." he said, making everyone laugh. "Come on, Alec. If I'd stop doing that, when else would I get to see you naked?" Simon asked, winking at the man, making him turn as red as a tomato. Jace glared at him and Simon laughed. "You're still my number one, angel." he stated, but Jace rolled his eyes.
When the others were in a conversation about one of Maia's charity events taking place next week, Jace leaned in to Simon. "Is this okay? I mean, I didn't mean to spring this 'moving in' thing on you, it's just that-" he whispered, but Simon cut him off, by putting a finger on his lips. "Darling, I am nothing but happy about this. I mean, I get to see you every day, which means you will probably never ever wear clothes again." he replied, making Jace chuckle. He then moved his hand to Jace's cheek and smiled softly. "Jace, I'm happy. If you want this, than so do I." he said quietly and Jace's eyes softened. "I do." he replied and Simon smiled again, leaning in and pecking at his lips. "You are too sweet." he said and Jace smirked. "I know." he said cockily and Simon shoved his good arm.
"By the way, Simon, I want my key back." Clary pouted at him, and the brunette rolled his eyes. "It's my home, princess." he said and Clary squinted her eyes at him. "Yeah, and you're my best friend." she stated, making Magnus exclaim 'hey!'. Simon ignored them both when Jace gave him a questioning look. "What happened to your key?" he asked and Simon smiled sadly. "I...threw it away. Thought I might not need it anymore." he stated grimly. Jace squeezed his hand. "You idiot. Why would you think that?" he asked, knowing the answer, but Simon smiled apologetically and Jace kissed him quickly. "No more sad talk." he said and Simon nodded, happily agreeing to that.
As the night passed, they drank wine and sat at the table, talking until it was almost 11 pm. Simon stood up, excusing himself to go to the bathroom, but as he started to leave the room, there was a knock on the door. He eyed it suspiciously, but Jace stood from his chair. "I got it." Simon said to him, stopping Jace in his tracks. The others eyed them suspiciously, but right now Simon didn't care. His mind was way too alert for that. He approached the door, peering through the peephole. There was no one there. He opened the door carefully and saw no one. He huffed in relief, but as he was shutting the door, Magnus said something. "What?" he asked, not completely paying attention. Alec approached the door. "He said, there's something on the door." he replied to Simon, pointing at it. There was a paper, no, a sticky note on the door. He took it down and eyed the words on it. His eyes immediately rose to Jace and the blonde strode over. "What is it?" he asked and took the paper. Simon saw his face go blank and white as a sheet. "Guys? What's going on?" Isabelle asked, coming over as well along with Clary. "Fuck." Jace whispered under his breath and Simon felt his heart pound faster by the minute.
He went over to Jace and saw anger build in his eyes, but the blonde let Simon take his hand. "We have to do something." he whispered. Magnus came towards them and peered over Jace's shoulder.
"Los hombres muertos no hablan" he mumbled confused. "What does that mean?" Alec asked, and Simon saw Jace close his eyes. Well, fuck, Simon thought.
